Chino XL, a rapper who established his roots in the early 1990s, died in July and now the details of his unfortunate passing have been revealed. According to a statement released by his family, Chino XL died of suicide.
As seen on EIN Presswire, the family of Chino XL shared the statement detailing how the former Art of Origin member lost his life, doing so in an effort to help others who may be struggling.
From EIN Presswire:
“With the most profound sadness imaginable, we share the news that our beloved father decided to end his own Life.”. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s office lists his official cause of death as asphyxia as a result of ligature hanging. “It’s been the most painful and personal experience of our lives but in honor of Suicide Awareness Month, we decided to share this truth. Dad would hope that this news may help someone else stay alive.” Barbosa battled life-long depression and in 2020 was diagnosed with congenital heart failure.
In the collective words of his daughters: “Our father was our rock and our best friend. Papa Bear loved us and taught us so much. Hundreds of emails, texts, chats and beautiful posts and comments on social media, have shown us that Dad was a fountain of strength to so many. He encouraged and comforted pretty much everyone in his path and left this dimension with an untouchable creative legacy. We are grateful beyond words for our time with Dad and are overwhelmed by the immeasurable global outpouring of love from around the world. We will forever navigate this catastrophic loss and ask for continued privacy.”
The statement adds that the estate of Chino XL will work with organizations focused on suicide prevention, at-risk youth, and children’s neuroblastoma. There will also be a foundation named after the God’s Carpenter artist beginning next year.

Born in The Bronx and raised in New Jersey, Chino XL dropped his debut album, Here To Save You All, in 1996 via Rick Rubin’s American Records. Although received positively by critics it only performed modestly commercially and it would be five years, and some record label shuffling before he dropped a follow-up project (I Told You So). A third album, Poison Pen, followed in 2006 and by then Chino had developed a rep as a high level lyricist, a rapper’s rapper widely respected by his peers.
While Chino XL never achieved mainstream notoriety, his reputation as elite level MC was sterling. For example, in 2020 he dropped a smoking verse on “Superhumans,” which appears on the Madlib and Oh No album called The Professionals. In the early 2000’s he also found success in front of the camera as an actor.
