The Rise of Mexican Music Touring | Billboard Latin Music Week 2023

The hottest genre on the charts is the hottest genre on the road. Fuerza Regida’s frontman JOP and Live Nation’s Hans Schafer and Jorge Garcia on how to book, market and sell out Mexican music shows.

JOP:
A lot of struggle. We started from the bottom. We started — I would do my own flyer parties. I’d hire the best groups in the city, then I would close. We would close. I’d hire my own band to close, we started like that, then we had our first hit. We started going into clubs. And then I went to like, from 20 to 50 and then from 50 to 100 and then you know, little by little, we went to a lot of clubs. Nothing the same, you know, the people get extra drunk. That’s where “Otra Peda” came from, you know, at the club it’s a little more crazy, but, um, then we just jumped into the next step. And thank God, it went well for us. Little by little, we are completing our goals and we’re filling stadiums and arenas, thank God!

Griselda Flores:
Well, Jorge, Hans, Jesús Ortiz Paz, frontman of Fuerza Regida, thank you so much for being here with us. I’m so excited.

JOP:
Good morning!

Griselda Flores:
Welcome to Latin Music Week and thank you everyone for being here. Before we get into the conversation, I want to see if we could play some footage from the massive ‘Otra Peda’ tour of Fuerza Regida.

The Art of the Festival | Billboard Latin Music Week 2023

Presented by Viña del Mar

Learn what goes on behind the scenes of crafting and sustaining a successful Latin music festival from the most successful festival producers in the world.

Chris Den Uijl
In the US when we launched Sueños, it was incredible feedback. We did 45,000 people per day, first year, and we had no idea what we were going to do. And we were just blown away. And to go into this year and see that grow. There’s a huge, huge need for consumption. But it’s completely different. We’re learning every single day that we need to challenge ourselves is, is that we don’t need to separate ourselves anymore from saying we have an inclusive Latin festival versus a multi-genre festival.

John Frias
My name is John Frias, the festival is in Los Angeles, and soon to be in Austin. It’s a quintessential festival of Los Angeles. It represents all of the culture that is in LA. It’s very representative of, of the diverse crowd and population and culture in Los Angeles, and just having the time of our lives.

Bruno Del Granado
Excellent. Next to John is my friend Chris, then out from Baja Beach, past suenos Coca Cola flow dynamics la familia on and on. Chris, can you tell us a little bit about your background and some of the festivals your work?

Chris Den Uijl
Hi, everyone, thanks for coming. Um, yeah, so we launched a bunch of different festivals over the last 10 years. But specific to this panel, Baja Beach Fest launched about five years ago. And it’s really just a celebration for Latinos in general, we wanted to create an event that really just like celebrated culture was a platform for the artists to be able to express themselves in like a really united way, but also bring the same type of production that you know, the Anglo festivals that I typically came from brought to the Latin culture so trying to build, you know, one of the strongest kind of footprints for artists to express themselves. And yeah, as time has passed on, we’ve expanded that footprint in two different cities in Mexico, as well as launched a festival called Sueños in Chicago two years ago.

Exactly Who Is Listening to Latin Music? Everyone! | Billboard Latin Music Week 2023

Luminate, the entertainment industry’s most trusted data partner, unveiled its new Latin Music Report exclusively at Billboard Latin Music Week. Never-before-revealed metrics and insights include the growing power of Latin superfans, how and why the genre is expanding to non-Spanish-speaking listeners, the rise of regional Mexican music and the subgenres and artists to watch in the coming months. The findings were presented by Rob Jonas, CEO of Luminate, which has fueled the Billboard charts for over three decades.

Rob Jonas:
Less than two weeks ago, as everybody’s aware, Bad Bunny teased his new song through his WhatsApp channel before releasing it towards the end of August. So I’m Rob Jonas, I’m with Luminate. We’re gonna go through a lot of numbers. But let’s dive in!

So many of you are aware that we publish pretty detailed reports twice a year, our media report and our annual report. We’ve been tracking the rise of Latin music for a very long time now. Many, many big trends we’ve seen in recent quarters, and I’m just gonna pull up some notes here. One sec.

So in our media report, we were talking about, obviously, the continued growth of Latin this year. It’s definitely primed for continued growth in the mainstream, as well as the very specific Latin market. Actually, we’ve seen in the media report, an increase of U.S. listeners who are listening to Spanish music, even though they don’t speak Spanish, myself included. We’ve also been looking very closely at a lot of the superfan data. Superfan is a very big topic right now within the industry.

Metro Boomin on Producing Hits, Working With Future, Migos, Post Malone & More | Billboard Cover

Metro Boomin:
I feel like what’s unique will forever for the end of time, be relevant, you know? No matter what category, what anything that’s in.

I have loved music my whole life so … You know growing up, I always wanted to be a rapper at first. In order to do that, I needed some beats so I had started to make my own beats. And at that time I was 13, like even seeing the success of, like, Soulja Boy and making his own beats it was like … it’s possible.
In 10th grade, I started to, you know, get some traction with people online and out of town, and started making trips to Atlanta, like this, that and the third. I worked with OJ da Juiceman, Don Cannon, and from that Juice introduced me to Gucci (Mane). I’m like in 12th grade, you know, I linked with Future before.

Metro Boomin on finding inspiration:
So basically to create a song, to create anything I just need to be comfortable. Ideas for songs and tracks and beats and everything, they hit me at all types of times, mostly when I’m outside of the studio, just living life, you know what I’m saying? I feel like as creatives, a lot of people put themselves so much in what they’re doing like at their art that at the same time we sometimes forget to live because that is what inspires what we do.

Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, new releases from Mitski, Demi Lovato, Dan + Shay, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Baroness debut.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

The sales of the Who’s Next reissue was bolstered by its availability in multiple configurations. On the low end is the base original nine-track album remastered on CD, vinyl and digital download, up through a lavish $300 Super Deluxe Edition boxed set with 10 CDs, a Blu-Ray Audio disc, a 100-page hard back book, posters and other merchandise.

All versions of the album, old and new, are combined for tracking and charting purposes. In the week ending Sept. 21 in the U.S., Who’s Next sold 9,500 copies – up from a negligible sum the previous week. Of its 9,500 sold, physical sales comprise 9,000 (6,000 on vinyl, 3,000 on CD) and digital downloads comprise 500.

At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts notches a second week in the lead (44,000; down 71%) after debut atop the tally a week ago. V’s Layover is steady at No. 2 (21,000; down 76% in its second week).

Mitski’s The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We arrives at No. 3 with 20,000 copies sold. It’s the second top 10 for the artist, following the chart-toping debut of Laurel Hell in 2022. Demi Lovato’s Revamped – a collection of rock reinterpretations of her previously released songs – bows at No. 4 with 11,000 sold, giving the singer her ninth top 10 (the entirety of her charting efforts). Dan + Shay’s new studio album Bigger Houses moves in at No. 6 with nearly 11,000 sold, marking the fifth consecutive and total top 10 for the duo.

Thirty Seconds to Mars’ first studio album in over five years, It’s the End of the World But It’s a Beautiful Day, debuts at No. 6 with nearly 10,000 sold. It’s the third top 10 set for the rock act, who was last on the chart with the 2018 studio set America (No. 2 debut and peak).

Rounding out the debuts in the top 10 is Baroness’ latest album Stone, which starts at No. 7 with nearly 10,000 sold. It’s the second top 10-charting title for the act, following 2019’s Gold & Grey (No. 5 debut and peak).

Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) falls 5-9 on Top Album Sales (9,000; down 4%) and NewJeans’ chart-topping 2nd EP ‘Get Up’ descends 6-10 (8,500; down 3%).

In the week ending Sept. 21, there were 1.670 million albums sold in the U.S. (down 5.4% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.336 million (down 7%) and digital albums comprised 334,000 (up 1.6%).

There were 574,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Sept. 21 (down 11.4% week-over-week) and 752,000 vinyl albums sold (down 3.4%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 25.049 million (up 0.9% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 33.412 million (up 19.9%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 72.266 million (up 6.4% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 58.848 million (up 10.9%) and digital album sales total 13.418 million (down 9.8%).

Billboard Explains: Peso Pluma & The Mexican Music Boom

Narrator:
Is Peso Pluma Mexican Music’s next global superstar? The Latin genre has been growing in popularity over the years and Peso is at the center of the explosion. But what is Regional Mexican? And what is it about Peso and the other new artists of today catching everyone’s attention?

This is Billboard Explains Peso Pluma & the Mexican Music Boom.

Regional Mexican is an umbrella term that consists of genres from different parts of Mexico and the United States like Banda, Tejano, Corridos, Norteño, Sierreńo and Mariachi. It has been around for more than a century creating a foundation and fan base thanks to artists like Los Tigres Del Norte, Christian Nodal and the late Jenny Rivera.

Artists like Grupo Firme, Banda MS, Eslabon Armado and more have risen in popularity and extended the genre’s global reach over the past few years. But then came Peso Pluma!

Peso had a breakout year in 2023 and has reached milestone after milestone ever since. His collab with Eslabon Armado “Ella Baila Sola” made history for being the first Regional Mexican song to reach the top five of the Billboard Hot 100.

His blockbuster album ‘Genesis’ became Billboard’s highest-charting Regional Mexican LP ever when it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and he was the first Regional Mexican artist to perform at the MTV VMAs. But what is it about Peso and other young artists, like Natanael Cano and Fuerza Regida that has captured everyone’s attention?

Enrique Iglesias & Maria Becerra, “Así Es La Vida (Sony Music Latin)

In just two minutes and 49 seconds, Enrique Iglesias and Maria Becerra take us on an emotional journey in this sensual bachata about a tumultuous relationship that cannot go on. “That’s life, divine treasure/ Like a game of poker where you bet everything/ That’s how our love was, with its ups and downs,” Iglesias sings with resignation, while Becerra replies: “That’s life, in the end what do we have left?/ You chose the road and I chose the path/ We still love each other in different ways.”

The first single from Iglesias’ upcoming album Final (Vol. 2) — a follow up to his Final (Vol. 1) from 2021 — the song was produced by Carlos Paucar. It is not the first bachata from the pop superstar, whose love affair with the Dominican genre includes hits like “Loco” and “El Perdedor.” “Bachata is a rhythm that captured my heart from the moment I heard it,” Iglesias says in a press release. “I am delighted to return to this powerful genre, accompanied by the great talent of Maria, who is one of a kind.”

The release comes with a lyric video but, according to a press release, the official music clip for “Así Es La Vida” will be available soon. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS

Becky G, Esquinas (Kemosabe Records/RCA Records)

Becky G’s Esquinas is a heartfelt exploration of her dual identity as a proud 200 percenter. The title translates to “corners,” symbolizing the meeting point between two cultures. Celebrating her Mexican and American roots, the Inglewood native weaves a vibrant musical tapestry that spans corridos, rancheras and baladas while showcasing her deep reverence for her heritage. For instance, “2ndo Chance,” featuring Ivan Cornejo’s haunting vocals, kicks off the album with a dreamy, nostalgic ballad that sets the tone for an introspective journey through her bicultural upbringing. Then there’s the cheeky “Cries in Spanish,” a whimsical duet with fellow Mexican-American DannyLux, that’s set to sad sierreño. The album’s latest single, “Querido Abuelo,” stands as a touching tribute to her late grandfather, a gut-wrenching balada which honors the sacrifices made by our ancestors as children of immigrants. Becky’s vocals are at their most poignant here, manifesting her maturity and emotional depth. Also starring Yahritza y Su Esencia, Chiquis, Angela and Leonardo Aguilar, Peso Pluma, and Gabito Ballesteros, her third studio album is a testament to her growth as a “genreless” artist, she claims, and her commitment to representing her bloodline proudly. — ISABELA RAYGOZA

Juanes, “La Versión en mi Cabeza” (Universal Music Latino)

Colombian rocker Juanes has released “La Versión en mi Cabeza” as part of the deluxe version of his successful album Vida Cotidiana, which earned him four nominations for the Latin Grammy 2023. The new song begins with soft chords from an electric guitar and the singer’s melodious voice, followed by soft percussion that unleashes the rock ballad. Written primarily by Venezuelan singer-songwriter Joaquina, the protagonist reflectively accepts and understands the fact of not being able to change his partner to meet his expectations. He finally realizes that the time has come to let go of that relationship: “I come back every time, even if I don’t want to/ To the version of you that only exists in my head/ I know you never wanted to hurt me/ But what do I do, ask you to change/ It’s too much,” goes the chorus. — LUISA CALLE

Paola Jara, Chiquis, “Lo Que No Sirve, Estorba” (Naeku)

Paola Jara and Chiquis unite their potent voices to give life to a new girl-power anthem. “Lo Que No Sirve, Estorba,” which loosely translates to “what doesn’t work gets in the way,” is a hard-hitting norteña powered by accordions, trumpets and prickly acoustic guitars. The lyrics are defiant and bold, as Jara and Chiquis sing confidently about not only overcoming heartbreak but becoming a total boss along the way. “I was left alone with kids and yet I’m standing here as firm as ever,” Chiquis sings, to which Jara adds, “la otra (the other one) will wash your dirty clothes, I’m sure you’ll want to come back.” Jara and Chiquis’ collaboration brings together the best of both worlds: regional Mexican music and música popular, Colombia’s take on música mexicana— GRISELDA FLORES

Venesti, De La Nada (AP Global Music)

For his debut studio album, Venesti has opted for a clever title: De La Nada, which translates to “Out of Nowhere.” But that’s precisely the point: the artist born Faiber Stiven Caicedo Castro is a rising Colombian artist from Cali who’s unexpectedly making waves in the music industry with his feel-good and refreshing 14-track set that’s influenced by many rhythmic melodies such as Afrobeat, dancehall, tropical and urban. Venesti is tall, dark and handsome, with a chiseled smile and suave vocals, best reflected in tracks such as “Culpables,” “Cuentale” and “Tú.” Off the bat, the Colombian newcomer is showcasing his versatility, also delivering infectious reggaetons (“Necesidad”), bossanova/trap fusions (“Sin Limite”), and even an electronic-bachata (“Cero Ilusiones”). De La Nada includes notable collaborators Jay Wheeler, Nacho, Maffio, Rios, and Randy of Jowell y Randy.

Venesti is confirmed for the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Week En Vivo concert series, where he will perform at the official kickoff party presented by AP Global Music. For tickets and information, click here. — JESSICA ROIZ

Mike Bahía & Greeicy Talk Growing a Career & Family Together | Billboard

Becoming a global sensation is not an easy task, and is a road filled with both excitement and passion and many sacrifices and life lessons, but then again, “it’s only worth it if you enjoy it.”

Billboard and Michelob Ultra partnered to tell the untold stories of joy for Colombian singing duo Mike Bahía and Greeicy.

Greeicy:
It is a career of many sacrifices, but I feel that when you dedicate yourself to something that you are passionate about, all those moments are worth it.

My name is Greeicy Rendón. I am Colombian, from the city of Cali. From a very young age, I always had many animals. The first thing that happens when you arrive at the house is you receive all that love. I spend some time with them. I start to greet the family. Nowadays, I have a son, so I say hi to the baby, to my parents, to Mike if he’s home. We love it because I feel like the arrival of Kai has made us even more family oriented, and I feel like that is the energy of our home. Super family centered.

He is going to say I kissed him twice. I didn’t give him two kisses. Let me clarify that right now.

Mike:
We’re not going to fight, maybe I imagined it because I liked it so much. The kiss went straight through me.

Well, my name is Michael Legret Mejía. I’m from Cali, Colombia. Music has always been around in my free time, so it really has been something I’ve always wanted to do.

Greeicy:
I spent five years making music, and at 12 years old, a reality show started my acting career. I fell in love with acting.

Manuel Turizo Talks Big Move, Making Miami Home & How Traveling Inspires His Music | Billboard

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

In partnership with Delta and LATAM Airlines, Billboard caught up with Colombian urbano artist Manuel Turizo to reflect on the value of travel in his music and creative process, his unexpected move to Miami four years ago, and how he stays connected to his Colombian roots in his new home city.

Manuel Turizo:
I found my passion for music relatively, since I was born. My brother would sing to me and say that I could hear him. My dad played the guitar. You try to do what the people around you are doing.

Hey, everyone. I am Manuel Turizo and this is my story with Delta and LATAM Airlines directly from Miami.

Miami is the epicenter of the Latin industry. It’s so full of music and art. This is the place where all Latin cultures come together, and that allows you to work with tons of people who you can collaborate with.

“Una Lady Como Tú” came about one weekend when I was with my brother, Julián. Let’s put our hearts out on the table and write the most romantic love song with as much romance as possible. It turned into my first worldwide hit with my first song, thank God. Representing my [Colombian] roots in my music is something that happens naturally. The melodies you have in your head or your way of writing are influenced by the same things that you grew up with. We always write in code, like how you write salsa music, like how you write vallenato. It’s just something that simply comes from within you.

Traveling has influenced both my sound and my creative process. You’re listening to different sounds all over, different music and different melodies. All of that stays within you. A piece of those things starts to show up in your ideas. It’s important to be present everywhere — whether it be in Colombia or the United States, wherever it may be.

Included on the collection is a reworked version of Turner’s “Something Beautiful Remains,” retitled to “Something Beautiful.” It was remixed by Turner’s longtime collaborator Terry Britten, who co-wrote and produced the original version of the song, released in 1996.

See the full tracklist below.

The Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll collection will be released via streaming services and as a five-vinyl LP box, a three-CD package, and a digital download album. An abbreviated 12-song version of the collection will simultaneously be issued on a single vinyl LP. All iterations of the album will include a foreword written by Bryan Adams. Turner and Adams scored a top 20-charting Hot 100 duet with “It’s Only Love,” released in 1985.

Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll also helps salute the 50th anniversary of the launch of Turner’s solo career in 1974 with her first solo album, Tina Turns the Country On!, which was released while she was still part of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. While that album missed Billboard’s charts and didn’t launch any singles, the following year saw Turner secure her first solo chart hits. The Acid Queen album reached No. 155 on the Billboard 200 in 1975 and No. 39 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (then-named Soul LPs) rankings, and launched her first solo-billed hit song on Billboard’s charts: a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” The single reached No. 61 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (then-named Hot Soul Singles).

Included on Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll are all of Turner’s post-Ike & Tina Turner Revue hits on the Hot 100 – 17 in total from 1984 through 1996. In addition, non-Hot 100 hits that charted on other key Billboard charts are represented, including “Afterglow,” “Cose Della Vita” (with Eros Ramazzotti), “Goldeneye,” “In Your Wildest Dreams” (featuring Barry White), “Look Me in the Heart,” “On Silent Wings,” “Open Arms,” “Tearing Us Apart” (with Eric Clapton), the 2020 remix of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” (with Kygo) and “When the Heartache Is Over.”
