Flanked by white dove wings and backed by a gigantic heart as props, the men of Los Ángeles Azules showed up wearing metallic blazers, while the women wore elegant red dresses. Argentine artist Nicki Nicole performed the dolce tropical number of “Otra Noche,” then Mexican singer-songwriters Ximena Sariñana and Sofía Reyes took the stage, singing “Mis Sentimientos” and “Nunca Es Suficiente,” respectively. Then the sibling band resumed with the invigorating medley, belting out the swoon-worthy “Cómo Te Voy a Olvidar.”

Moments after delivering their potpourri of classics, the sibling band accepted their Lifetime Achievement Award. “Thanks to our parents, thanks to our families, to the fans, to all the people around the world who have supported the romantic music of Los Ángeles Azules,” said Elías Mejía, one of the members of the band of brothers, as he accepted the honor. “We are going to continue singing and dancing, and we are going to continue making cumbia, desde Iztapalapa para el mundo (from Iztapalapa for the world).”

Continuously modernizing the storied regional Mexican subgenre for the next generation, the sibling band have extended their reach tenfold by revamping their hits and writing new ones alongside an exhilarating all-star cast of Latin artists from all corners of the map.

With a 40-year musical career, Los Ángeles Azules have achieved great success, including 14 entries on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart, with three songs in the top 10. They also have 16 entries on Latin Airplay, of which six reached the top 10, including “Nunca es Suficiente,” with Natalia Lafourcade, which peaked at No. 3 in 2019. Their 2020 album De Buenos Aires Para El Mundo debuted at No. 8 on the Regional Mexican Albums chart, making it the band’s 12th album to reach the top 10 on the tally.

The 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards featured additional performances from Bad Bunny, Calibre 50, Chiquis, Eddy Lover, Eladio Carrión, Farruko, Grupo Frontera, La Factoría, Los Sebastianes, Manuel Turizo, Marc Anthony, Marshmello, Myke Towers, Nicki Nicole, Olga Tañon, Pepe Aguilar, Peso Pluma, Sky Rompiendo, Sofía Reyes, Ximena Sariñana, Yandel and Yng Lvcas.

The 30th annual Billboard Latin Music Awards took place on Thursday (Oct. 5) at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., broadcasted live on Telemundo. It simultaneously aired on the Spanish entertainment cable network Universo, on Peacock and the Telemundo app. Throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, it’s available on Telemundo Internacional.

Colombian hitmaker Sebastián Yatra has been pushing the boundaries of Latin pop. As part of Billboard Latin Music Week, fans will get to see a star-on-star interview with Yatra, moderated by Lasso. The live Q&A will take place on Tuesday (Oct. 3) at the Faena Forum Main Stage at 11:45 a.m. ET.

In his upcoming interview with the Venezuelan singer/songwriter, the two South American artists will discuss Yatra’s creative process, his foray into the film industry, and how a multi-hyphenate artist manages success in a highly demanding Latin pop world. Topics will range from what inspires him and sparks curiosity, planning vs. flowing, mental health, tennis, and the power of one’s voice. The “Tacones Rojos” singer will also reveal what’s next for him.

Yatra continues his skyward ascent this year. Amid releasing a string of viral singles like “Vagabundo” with Manuel Turizo and Beéle and his latest solo hit “Energía Bacana,” Yatra was selected as the official musical opener for the 2023 U.S. Open tennis tournament. He also received 2023 RIAA Honors for “driving the rise across American music, culture and society,” alongside global icon Gloria Estefan.

Currently, the Medellín artist is in the running for two 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards: Latin Pop Artist of the Year, Solo (in which he will compete against Rosalía, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and Becky G) and Latin Pop Song of the Year for “Una Noche Sin Pensar.” Last year, Yatra achieved a No. 36 slot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 for “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s Encanto and has positioned himself multiple times on Billboard’s Global charts.

In 2022, the moderator and Yatra collaborated on the pop-rock ballad “Ojos Marrones.” Lasso’s “Ojos Marrones” is nominated for three Latin Grammys: record of the year, song of the year, and best pop/rock song. The song also became the Venezuelan artist’s first entry into the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. US charts.

Ivy Queen will be honored with the Icon Award at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Billboard and Telemundo announced Thursday (Aug. 31). The award recognizes the Puerto Rican superstar, a pioneer of reggaeton, as an artist who has carved out a career that has remained relevant through time.
“I am beyond thrilled and honored to receive this award,” Ivy Queen said in a statement. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication I have put into my music over the years. I am grateful to my fans for their unwavering support throughout my career, and I hope to continue to inspire and empower women through my music for years to come.”

Celebrated globally for achieving both musical and commercial success, Ivy Queen’s career spans nearly 30 years. She earned her first entry on a Billboard chart with “Quiero Bailar,” which peaked at No. 16 on the Tropical Airplay chart in July 2005, and, a few months later, scored her first No. 1 on that tally with “Cuéntale.” She boasts 20 entries on Latin Rhythm Airplay, the third-most among Latina artists; 400 million on-demand official streams in the U.S., according to Luminate; 560,00 albums sold in the U.S.; and 584,000 song downloads.

The special honor will be presented at the awards ceremony — where Ivy Queen is also set to perform — which will be held Thursday, Oct. 5, and will be broadcast live on Telemundo from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
