Aguilar, who has been performing since he was a toddler, when his legendary parents Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre first took him on tour, has placed nine top 10 titles on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart, and 14 top 10 sets on the Regional Mexican Albums chart. He has also performed around the world, most recently with his stunning Jaripeo Sin Fronteras tour, on which he sings and rides on horseback, highlighting a venerable Mexican music tradition.

“My career started 34 years ago,” he said in an emotional speech, elegantly dressed all in black. “During that time, I’ve seen changes in everything in the industry: Genres, technology. And the way to remain relevant has been through my passion for my music and by reinventing when it was necessary. And that’s been possible thanks to the people who’ve been by my side. An artist is as good as the team that surrounds him.”

Aguilar specifically thanked his wife, and, especially, his fans: “Without the fans, we couldn’t do anything. An artists’ strongest argument is his fans,” he said, dedicating the award to them.

Aguilar later changed to his traditional ranchera outfit and performed a beautiful four-track medley that covered his vast career, beginning with his breakthrough hit “Por mujeres como tú,” and ending with his current single “Cuídamela bien,” inspired by the recent marriage of his daughter Angela Aguilar to Christian Nodal and featuring video footage of Angela Aguilar playing in the screens behind Aguilar.

Dressed all in black, the singer, known for his lush, velvety voice, performed accompanied by his full mariachi on one side and a pop band on the other, a nod to his many facets and styles.

Earlier in the week, Aguilar sat down for an Icon Q&A during Latin Music Week where he spoke about the importance of tradition and family.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards recognize the impact of Latin music on the global scene, being the only awards based directly on the performance of albums, songs and artists on Billboard’s weekly charts. This year, awards will be presented in 49 categories, spanning the genres of Latin pop, tropical, Latin rhythm and regional Mexican.

Finalists, and the eventual winners, reflect performance of new recordings on Billboard’s albums and songs charts for the period covering rankings dated August 19, 2023, through the September 7, 2024, charts. Determinations are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay and touring, tracked by Billboard and its data partner, Luminate.

Produced by Telemundo in collaboration with American Country Broadcast Inc., the awards can be seen on Telemundo, the Telemundo app, streaming service Peacock and in Latin America and the Caribbean through Telemundo Internacional.

This year, the list of finalists is led by Karol G, who has 17 mentions in key categories such as Artist of the Year, Tour of the Year, and Global 200 Latin Artist of the Year. Bad Bunny and Peso Pluma follow closely behind with 15 mentions each. Other notable finalists include Feid, with 11 mentions, and regional Mexican stars Fuerza Regida and Junior H, both with 8 mentions, including Artist of the Year. See the full list of finalists here.

With an audience chanting “bichota, bichota,” Karol G received the Spirit of Hope honor at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards in recognition of her philanthropic work with the Con Cora Foundation.

Wearing a sparkling white dress with fringes, the Colombian superstar took the stage to receive the trophy from Camilo Carrera and Paris Hilton. “This is probably one of the most special awards I’ve ever received in my entire career,” she said.

Regarding the work of the foundation, she proudly stated that it is “made up of women and we work for women.” And she added: “They are empowered super-cool women.”

“One of the reasons why it is nice and special to participate in these movements is that it gives us the possibility of receiving help from companies that seek us out around the world to support great projects of which you are also a part, because what we do in tickets, in record sales, we also direct it to the foundation,” she told her fans.

The star concluded her speech by giving the award to Valentina Bueno, whom he took with her by the hand to the stage. “Today I have this award here, but I want to give it to (Bueno).. the director of the foundation. She more than anyone makes this foundation a reality.”

The Spirit of Hope Award, inspired by the legendary Selena and created more than two decades ago, recognizes the philanthropic work of artists.

Con Cora promotes the empowerment of women in vulnerable situations such as mothers who are heads of households, women deprived of their liberty, or those with low resources, among others. The foundation fosters this empowerment through social, economic, artistic, psychological, and spiritual support.

“It often crosses my mind, especially when I’m on the plane, that I have a lot of time to think, ‘God, I know you are making me big for a reason. It is impossible for a person to receive so many blessings simply to fill themselves with success or fill their pockets with money. Please give me the wisdom to understand what this beyond is that I need to do. I feel that there is my mission, through CON CORA” the Colombian expressed to Billboard upon learning that she would receive the recognition.

The 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards aired live from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, FL, on Telemundo.

Evoking Panamanian genre pioneer El General, Farruko arrived on stage like a general and paid homage to the roots of reggaetón (also known as reggae en español) with a performance of “Perdóname” Thursday (Oct. 5) at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

As a sweet surprise, Panama’s La Factoría and Eddy Lover, who originally recorded “Perdóname” in 2008, also rocked the stage. La Factoría donned a slinky latex red suit with a huge bow as an adornment and long matching boots, while Lover wore a metallic lime green suit.

The three performers mellowed-out “Perdóname,” for a laid back version of the classic song.

Accompanied by a cajon player, guitarist, keyboardist, over a dozen dancers, and even a Vespa motorcycle, the genre trailblazers delivered a beautiful, sultry performance to close the 30th annual ceremony at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, FL.

The 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards featured additional performances from Bad Bunny, Los Ángeles Azules, Calibre 50, Chiquis, Eladio Carrión, Grupo Frontera, Los Sebastianes, Manuel Turizo, Marc Anthony, Marshmello, Myke Towers, Nicki Nicole, Olga Tañon, Pepe Aguilar, Peso Pluma, Sky Rompiendo, Sofía Reyes, Ximena Sariñana, Yandel and Yng Lvcas.

With the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards set to take place this Thursday (Oct. 5), fans are about to find out who won in each of the ceremony’s 48 categories, including Artist of the Year, New.
Five artists — Bizarrap, Chino Pacas, Grupo Frontera, Peso Pluma and Yng Lvcas — are currently competing in the sought-after category. Along with joining their fellow newcomers in the Artist of the Year, New category, both Grupo Frontera and Peso Pluma are finalists vying for the coveted Artist of the Year award.

Four out of the five acts are Mexican or of Mexican descent, a testament of the ever-expanding Mexican movement that has blossomed throughout 2023. Pacas, Frontera and Pluma are representing regional Mexican music with their corridos bélicos and Tex-Mex cumbia, respectively, while Lvcas is championing a new kind of persuasive “Mexican reggaetón.” On the other hand, Argentine alchemist Bizarrap has showcased his genre-spanning production wizardry that has broken the internet numerous times. Last year, sierreño star Ivan Cornejo took the coveted award.

Pluma leads all finalists this year, with 21 nods across 15 categories. Frontera aren’t far behind, with a total of 15 nods. Yng Lvcas and Bizarrap hold six entries each, while Chino Pacas has only one in the new artist category.

Finalists and eventual winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including audio and video streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and touring, tracked by Billboard and Luminate. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of Aug. 13, 2022, through Aug. 12, 2023. The ceremony will broadcast live on Telemundo from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Oct. 5. It will also broadcast simultaneously on Universo, Peacock, the Telemundo App, and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Telemundo Internacional.

“One day, someone reached out and said, ‘Peso Pluma is in Mexico, he wants to record, and he wants to start doing reggaetón’,” Yng Lvcas told Billboard Español in April. “Once we got to the studio, he said, ‘I’m interested in doing the remix of ‘La Bebé’ because I really like that song.’”
