BET Hip Hop Awards

This year’s edition of the BET Hip-Hop Awards showcased the genre’s best, with Kendrick Lamar showing out as the top winner.
On Tuesday (October 15), the 2024 BET Hip-Hop Awards was aired on the network, with Fat Joe serving as the host. The event took place at Drai’s Las Vegas, and it was the scene for some of Hip-Hop’s notable stars to walk away with coveted awards including the night’s top winners, Kendrick Lamar and Megan Thee Stallion. Kendrick Lamar, who wasn’t in attendance, snagged eight awards including Hip-Hop Artist of The Year, Song of The Year, and Best Hip-Hop Video of The Year for his smash hit “Not Like Us”. His 12 nominations were tied only by Megan Thee Stallion.

Travis Scott received the “I Am Hip-Hop” Award and was on hand to accept his trophy. “I always had this vision, to this day, to take the sound to the next level,” he said in his speech, emphasizing how much the award meant to him and his career.

The award for Album of The Year went to Nicki Minaj for Pink Friday 2, making her the first female artist to secure that victory. She wasn’t present at the event, in part due to her contentious history with the network over a since-deleted post mocking her after a Grammy win by her rival Cardi B on X, formerly Twitter back in 2019. Nicki Minaj did share a meme after her win was announced, showing Chucky from the Child’s Play movies biting on a woman’s arm.

Other winners of the night included Future and Metro Boomin, who won Best Duo or Group and also for Best Collaboration for the “Like That” track featuring Kendrick Lamar. The Alchemist took home the honors for Producer of The Year and DJ of The Year, while the legendary Missy Elliott won the award for Best Live Performer. Sexxy Red won the award for Best Breakthrough Hip-Hop Artist and Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay snagged the Best Podcast Award.

It’s been a helluva 2024 for Kendrick Lamar. Not only did he drop one of the most contagious records in Hip-Hop history with “Not Like Us” (which decimated the popularity of his rival, Drake), but he’s also been chosen to headline the next Super Bowl Halftime Show, which will no doubt feature said record on a global stage.

As if that wasn’t bad enough (for Drake anyway), the now-classic diss record has gone on to collect all kinds of accolades for the Compton representative and helped Kung Fu Kenny clean up at last night’s BET Hip Hop Awards. The enormous popularity of “Not Like Us” led to K. Dot taking home trophies in categories such as “Song of the Year,” “Best Hip Hop Video,” “Impact Track,” and ultimately led to him winning “Hip Hop Artist of the Year.”

Kendrick even got “Best Guest Verse of the Year” for his bars on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” which actually kicked off his battle with Drake and J. Cole, who “gracefully” bowed out of the battle after releasing and retracting a diss record of his own.
Unfortunately, for fans, BET’s “Lyricist of the Year” winner wasn’t on hand for the festivities as he was out and about handling his business, but best believe fans weren’t mad as most felt he earned everyone of these trophies after a busy year that saw him and Drake release back-to-back-to-back hit diss records that had the culture on edge before Summer even starter. It was amazing.
What do y’all think about Kendrick Lamar’s big night at the BET Hip Hop Awards? Well deserved or nah? Let us know in the comments section below.

While Megan Thee Stallion came into Tuesday’s (Oct. 15) broadcast of the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards as the top nominee, who will emerge as the night’s big winner?
Meg leads the way with 12 nominations, followed by Kendrick Lamar with 11; Drake with eight; Cardi B, GloRilla, Metro Boomin and Minaj (seven each); Future and Travis Scott (six each); 21 Savage and 41 (four each); and A$AP Rocky, Common, Lil Wayne, Pete Rock and Sexyy Red (three each).

All eyes are on Fat Joe and for all the right reasons. The veteran MC is closing out the year with a return to the BET Hip Hop Awards, a new album and more.

While the 2020 pandemic negatively impacted millions it surprisingly brought the Hip-Hop community together via virtual engagement on social media; here Fat Joe was reborn. The “Lean Back” rapper hosted a captivating Instagram Live series that featured some of the highest profile talents in music, film, sports and more. Fast forward a couple of years and the Bronx, NY native is Rap’s unofficial Master of Ceremonies that we never knew we needed.

This week he completed a rare three-peat and returned as host for the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards for the third time. Taped in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Oct. 8, the ceremony was attended by countless celebrities and power players. The event not only celebrated some of the most impactful releases from the last year but also honored Travis Scott with “I AM HIP HOP Award.”
In an exclusive interview with HipHopWired.com Fat Joe made it clear the honor was all his. “Three-peat baby! Night night! [There’s] nothing like it. You know coming from The Bronx there is no better vibe than representing the culture and seeing all the other artists. You know the only time we get to see the other artists” he said with excitement.
Since his last stint at the BET Hip Hop Awards Fat Joe has kept busy with co-hosting talk shows, multiple promotional appearances for his autobiography and more. He went on to admit that the additional experience of being on set served him well. “To be honest with you I did it and before you knew it, it was the last act. It just flew by so smoothly; I don’t know how to explain it” he added. “This year was way easier than the first two. I knew everything that was going on. The timing was perfect, everything was perfect about it. I guess practice makes perfect.”
While he didn’t give us any spoilers about the event, he made it clear his favorite moment of the night was when Cactus Jack was honored. “The biggest moment of the night was when Travis Scott received the ‘I AM HIP HOP Award’. This man created his own style. His music is so incredible, he’s one of the few artists that I can listen to 20-30 songs in a row” Joe explained. “It was a happy moment to see him received his flowers.”

Back in 2022, Fat Joe broke necks when he hosted the BET Hip Hop Awards wearing the very limited Eminem Jordan 3 sneakers. When asked what fans can expect this year he remained tightlipped but revealed that he was thinking pink. “I got an outfit called Pinky and the Brain, that’s how I start the show. Super Bottega [Veneta] flow. A lot of name brands that a lot of people don’t know” he said cryptically. “It was real clean, it wasn’t big logos it was more just straight clean. More subtle but [the pieces] are real!” he said jokingly.

To round out the year Fat Joe looks to release a new album. “The World Changed On Me will be out later this month, no later than the beginning of next month. I feel like I am the last un-gentrified MC. [It’s like] I got the bodega and they trying to change the neighborhood with the Jamba Juice and all that,” he said.
The 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards will air Tuesday, October 15 at 8PM EST and will be simulcasted across BET HER, VH1, AND MTV2.

Looks like the BET Hip Hop Awards will be taking their talents from the South to the West come next year as they’re looking for a new venue for the new year.

According to HipHopDX, the BET Awards will be setting up shop in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 8 (it will actually air a week later) after spending the last decade and change holding the awards ceremony in Atlanta. The sudden move is sure to surprise many in the Hip-Hop community as no one ever seemed to mind having to go to the A to get their BET Award But apparently, the higher-ups over at the network felt it was time to expand as the culture continues to grow in ways no one expected over the past few decades.
Per HipHopDX:

In a statement, BET CEO and President Scott Mills said: “From the groundbreaking performances of legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Lena Horne, who shattered racial barriers, to today’s leading and emerging artists, Las Vegas’ vibrant energy reflects the innovation, soul, and storytelling that Black culture continuously contributes. BET is excited to bring ‘BET Hip Hop Awards’ to a city known for its electrifying atmosphere and rich history of awe-inspiring entertainment.”
Connie Orlando, EVP of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET, added: “In 2023, BET paid homage to the legacy, impact, and evolution of hip hop during its golden anniversary, punctuating the year-long celebration with BET Hip Hop Awards. This year, we will continue to honor the genre while pushing boundaries with fresh experiences, including an unforgettable night in Las Vegas. We’re thrilled to continue to bring fans memorable performances and surprises that will make for another epic night of hip hop.”
Though we’re sure artists from Atlanta and the good people of the Big Peach won’t appreciate the move too much, y’all already know entertainers and artists will love hitting the casinos before and after the award show, so they probably won’t be complaining about the venue change. Just sayin’.
What do y’all think about BET taking their awards show out to Sin City? Should they have stayed in Atlanta? Should they have gone to LA or NY instead? Let us know in the comments section below.

Megan Thee Stallion leads the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards nominations with 12 nods. And for the first time since the category was introduced in 2020, women have achieved parity with men in hip-hop artist of the year. The nominees include four women (Megan, Cardi B, GloRilla and Nicki Minaj) and four men (21 Savage, Drake, Future and Kendrick Lamar).
Lamar was a beat behind Megan with 11 nods, followed by Drake (eight nods); Cardi B, GloRilla, Metro Boomin and Minaj (seven each); Future and Travis Scott (six each); 21 Savage and 41 (four each); and A$AP Rocky, Common, Lil Wayne, Pete Rock and Sexyy Red (three each).

Trending on Billboard

Drake is the only artist who has been nominated for hip-hop artist of the year all five years it has been presented. This is Megan’s fourth nod in the category; the third for Cardi B, Future and Lamar; the second for 21 Savage and, surprisingly, the first for Minaj.

Megan, who hosted and performed on MTV’s VMAs on Sept. 10, received three nods in the category of best collaboration – Cardi B’s “Bongos,” on which she is featured; GloRilla’s “Wanna Be,” on which she is featured; and her own hit “Mamushi,” featuring Yuki Chiba.

Fat Joe will host and co-executive produce the show, which is set to tape in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The show will air on BET one week later, on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This will be the third year in a row that Fat Joe has hosted the show, the most since Snoop Dogg hosted from 2013 to 2015. Comedian Mike Epps holds the BET Hip Hop Awards record, having hosted four years running (2009-12).

“Joe Crack is back for the three-peat, night night baby,” Fat Joe said in a statement. “It’s been a dream to host the BET Hip Hop Awards the past few years, and I’m looking forward to taking things to the next level in Las Vegas. We’re going to be in a new city and location, but the excitement and entertainment at the awards will be even bigger than ever.”

“This year’s nominees exemplify the creativity and diversity of hip-hop and the culture,” Connie Orlando, EVP, specials, music programming and music strategy at BET, said in a statement.

Orlando will oversee production of the annual event and serve as executive producer with Jamal Noisette, BET’s SVP of specials and music programming. Jesse Collins, CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment, will act as executive producer, with Jeannae Rouzan-Clay and Dionne Harmon from Jesse Collins Entertainment also serving as executive producers.

Collins and Harmon won Primetime Emmys two years ago for their work on The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, which was voted outstanding variety special (live).

This will be only the fourth time the BET Hip Hop Awards, which originated in 2006, has been staged outside of Atlanta. It shifted to Miami in 2017-18 and was held in multiple locations in 2020, at the height of the pandemic.

Fans can start voting for DJ of the year, producer of the year and best hip hop platform starting Friday, Sept. 20 at noon ET on the BET website.

The 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards is headed to Sin City. The show will be held in Las Vegas for the first time on Oct. 8 and will premiere Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET. BET is expected to announce the venue next week.
“BET is excited to bring BET Hip Hop Awards to a city known for its electrifying atmosphere and rich history of awe-inspiring entertainment,” Scott Mills, president & CEO of BET, said in a statement. “From the groundbreaking performances of legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Lena Horne, who shattered racial barriers, to today’s leading and emerging artists, Las Vegas’ vibrant energy reflects the innovation, soul, and storytelling that Black culture continuously contributes.”

The BET Hip Hop Awards, which originated in 2006, has been held in Atlanta in all but three years. It shifted to Miami in 2017-18 and was held in multiple locations in 2020, at the height of the pandemic. Fat Joe hosted the show the last two years. This year’s host has not yet been named.

Las Vegas has become a popular home for awards shows. The Billboard Music Awards were based there most years from 1996 to 2022. The Academy of Country Music Awards were held there in all but three years from 2003 to 2022. The Grammys were held there in 2022, the only time the show has been broadcast from a city in which it doesn’t have a chapter.
