Ms. Lauryn Hill & YG Marley, Ice Spice and Tyla have been added as performers for the 2024 BET Awards, which will air live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
They join previously announced performers GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét. Additionally, Tanner Adell, who guested on a new version of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, will perform on the BET Amplified stage. Taraji P. Henson will host the show for the third time. Usher is set to receive the lifetime achievement award. He also has four nominations.

Most of these performers have had stellar years. Usher headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in February, which set a new ratings record. Hill’s 1998 classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and also topped Apple Music’s list of the best albums of all time.

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” conquered multiple charts. Billboard’s charts team reports this week that “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is the first song to be rising in the top 25 simultaneously on the Country Airplay, Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay and Rhythmic Airplay charts — which have coexisted for 28 years.

Monét won three Grammys in February, including best new artist. Tyla was the inaugural winner in the new best African music performance category for “Water,” which was a top 10 hit on the Hot 100. Ice Spice didn’t win a Grammy, but she went into the ceremony with an impressive four nominations.

GloRilla has two songs in the top 10 on this week’s Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart — “Yeah Glo!” and her “Wanna Be” collab with Megan Thee Stallion. Sexxy Red has one song (“Get It Sexyy”) in the top 10 and another, a collab with Drake (“U My Everything”), in the top 20. Muni Long is also in the top 20 with her soulful ballad “Made for Me.”

If these artists perform these hits on the show, it could not only give the hits a boost, but the records’ Grammy chances, because the audience will likely include Grammy voters who are starting to think of their Grammy choices. (The Grammys’ online entry period runs from July 17 to Aug. 31.)

Henson previously hosted the BET Awards in 2021 and 2022. The Oscar-nominated actress (for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) is one of only two performers to host the show three times (the other being Mo’Nique, who won an Oscar for Precious).

Drake leads the 2024 BET Awards nominations with seven nods, followed by Nicki Minaj with six; J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, Monét and Beyoncé with five each; and 21 Savage, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla and Usher with four each.

Voting for the 2024 Viewer’s Choice Award began last week and ends June 30 (at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT). Nominees in that category are Doja Cat’s “Agora Hills,” Lil Durk’s “All My Life” (featuring J. Cole), Gunna’s “Fukumean,” Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me,” Long’s “Made for Me,” Monét’s “On My Mama,” Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” (featuring Sexyy Red & SZA), Chris Brown’s “Sensational (featuring Davido & Lojay), Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” and Tyla’s “Water.”

Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP specials, music programming & music strategy, will oversee and executive produce the annual show. Jamal Noisette, SVP, tentpoles & music community engagement, will co-executive produce for BET. Jesse Collins Entertainment is the production company for the show, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay also serving as executive producers.

Here are the performers for the 2024 BET Awards. (Additional performers may be added. In that event, this list will be updated.)

The 2024 BET Awards will air live on the East Coast on Sunday, June 30, on BET at 8 p.m. ET/ PT.
“Taraji is a phenom, known for her vibrant personality and charisma, and we are excited to welcome her back to host Culture’s Biggest Night, [the] BET Awards, the ultimate celebration of Black creativity,” Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP specials, music programming & music strategy, said in a statement.

Previously announced performers include GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét. Sexyy Red, GloRilla and Long all have hits climbing the top 20 on Billboard’s current Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Sexyy Red’s “Get It Sexyy” jumps from No. 9 to No. 7, GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” jumps from No. 11 to No. 8 and Long’s “Made for Me” leaps from No. 25 to No. 17.

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” holds at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart after logging three weeks at No. 1.

If these artists perform these hits on the show, it could not only give the hits a boost, but the records’ Grammy chances, because the audience will likely include Grammy voters who are starting to think of their Grammy choices. (The Grammys’ online entry period runs from July 17 to Aug. 31.) Long’s “Made for Me” has the sophisticated R&B appeal of Monét’s “On My Mama,” which was nominated for record of the year at the Grammy ceremony that was held on Feb. 4.

Usher is set to receive the lifetime achievement award at this year’s BET Awards. He also has four nominations.

Drake leads the 2024 BET Awards nominations with seven nods, followed by Nicki Minaj with six; J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, Monét and Beyoncé with five each; and 21 Savage, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla and Usher, with four each.

Usher will be the BET Awards’ 2024 Lifetime Achievement honoree. The R&B veteran is also nominated for four BET Awards at this year’s ceremony – album of the year for Coming Home, best collaboration and video of the year for “Good Good” and best male R&B/pop artist. Drake again leads the pack in nominations at the upcoming 2024 BET Awards, with Nicki Minaj behind him.
The 2024 BET Awards looks to be another intriguing affair, as the full list of nominees was released by the network on Thursday (May 16) with Drake once again topping the list with seven nominations. It’s the second year in a row that he’s accomplished this feat. Nicki Minaj came in second with six nominations. J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, and Victoria Monet tied for third place with five nominations. 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla and Usher bring up the rear with four nominations. The nominations came from the BET Voting Academy, composed of multiple figures in music, sports journalism, and media.

Among Drake’s nominations are those for Album of The Year with For All The Dogs, Best Collaboration of the Year for his track “Rich Baby Daddy” with SZA and Sexyy Red. All eyes will be on the Best Male Hip-Hop artist category where he’ll face off against Kendrick Lamar, who he’s had a hotly contested beef that has dominated the news in the last two weeks. For Nicki Minaj, she’s also in the running for Album of the Year with Pink Friday 2, Video of the Year, and two nominations for different singles for Best Collaboration of the Year – “Barbie World” with Ice Spice and Aqua, and “Everybody” with Lil Uzi Vert. Nicki Minaj is also nominated for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

The 2024 BET Awards will be held in Los Angeles on June 30 and aired live at 8 P.M. ET on BET. The theme for this year’s awards is “Standing On Culture”. The show will be produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, with Collins also serving as an executive producer along with Dionne Harm, Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, and Connie Orlando. Orlando is BET’s executive vice president of music programming and strategy.

Drake has had a tumultuous month, engaging in an increasingly personal diss battle with Kendrick Lamar that has seemingly ended in his defeat, but Thursday (May 16) brought some good news: He leads the nominations for the 2024 BET Awards.
Drake received seven nods, followed closely by Nicki Minaj with six. J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA and Victoria Monét each have five nominations. 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla and Usher each have four.

The 2024 BET Awards, which bills itself Culture’s Biggest Night, will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This year’s theme is Standing on Culture.

BET also announced the first artists confirmed to perform on the show: GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét.

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is in its third week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em,” which headed that chart for 10 weeks immediately preceding Shaboozey’s smash, is nominated for the Viewer’s Choice Award. So, as genre walls blur, a performer and a nominee on the BET Awards could find themselves nominated for CMA Awards later this year.

Monét’s Jaguar II, which won a Grammy in February for best R&B album, and Killer Mike’s Michael, which won a Grammy for best rap album, are among the BET nominees for album of the year, along with Chris Brown’s 11:11, Gunna’s A Gift & A Curse, 21 Savage’s American Dream, Usher’s Coming Home, Drake’s For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition) and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2.

Monét’s “On My Mama,” which was Grammy-nominated for record of the year, is nominated here for the Viewer’s Choice Award. Other nominees in that category include two tracks that won Grammys in February – Lil Durk featuring J. Cole’s “All My Life,” which won best melodic rap performance; and Tyla’s “Water,” which won the inaugural award for best African music performance.

Drake and Burna Boy are both nominated for BET Awards for both best male R&B/pop artist and best male hip-hop artist. Doja Cat is nominated in the equivalent categories for female artists, a sign of all three artists’ broad appeal.

A musical biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, and a concert film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,  are among the nominees for best movie.

Blue Ivy Carter, the 12-year old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, is nominated for the YoungStars Award.

Halle Bailey is nominated for best actress and also for the Dr. Bobby Jones best gospel/inspirational award for “Angel.”

Nominations were determined by the BET Voting Academy, which is comprised of entertainment professionals and influencers in the fields of music, media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations and creative arts.

Voting for the BET Awards’ 2024 Viewer’s Choice Award begins June 6 and ends June 30.

Connie Orlando, EVP, specials, music programming & music strategy, will oversee and executive produce the annual show, with Jamal Noisette, SVP, tentpoles & music community engagement to co-executive produce for BET. Jesse Collins Entertainment is the production company for the show, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay also serving as executive producers.

Diddy has been nominated in three categories at the upcoming BET Awards, despite dealing with controversy over sexual abuse allegations.
According to reports, the first round of voting for artists to receive nominations at the 2024 BET Awards has begun – and embattled music mogul and artist Diddy is listed on the ballot multiple times. The categories include his recent The Love Album: Off the Grid, for Album of The Year, and the track “Closer To God” with Teyana Taylor from the album is in consideration for Song of The Year. He’s also apparently nominated for Video of the Year for his guest appearance in the video for “Creepin”, a song done by Metro Boomin with 21 Savage and The Weeknd. The first round of voting is set to conclude on Tuesday (May 7). Studios, record labels, and managers can submit award nominations, with some categories allowing voters to write in nominees.

The Love Album qualifies for nominations since it was released on September 15, 2023. The album didn’t receive broad acclaim, but it was notable due to the amount of high-profile guests who appeared on it such as Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Mary J. Blige, Herb Alpert, John Legend, and Burna Boy. Two months after its release, Diddy aka Sean Combs would find himself in swarming legal trouble just a week after earning two Grammy Award nominations after ex-partner and singer on his label Cassie Ventura filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against him. (The album would lose to SOS, by SZA.) Diddy would settle the suit with Ventura shortly afterward but it was a harbinger of things to come.
Diddy is now dealing with multiple lawsuits from different victims, including one where he and former Bad Boy Records president Harve Pierre and a third man were accused of transporting a then 17-year-old from Michigan to New Jersey and then a New York studio where she was sexually assaulted. The mogul also saw his homes in Miami and Los Angeles raided by Homeland Security in line with a federal investigation of allegations of sexual trafficking that have been levied against Diddy and his 26-year-old son Christian. Representatives for Diddy declined to answer questions.

Busta Rhymes has been an electrifying force in Hip-Hop since before many of today’s rappers were born. Last month, the Brooklyn bred emcee took home the 2023 BET Awards biggest honor as this year’s Lifetime Achievement recipient.

Some of music’s greatest talents, including Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Diddy paid homage to the 12-time Grammy Award nominated rapper in a heartwarming video. Fans took to Twitter to share their favorite Busta Rhymes moments while reiterating that a Lifetime Achievement Award was overdue for the “mayor of Hip Hop.”

Busta’s award sparked an even bigger conversation about other icons whose contributions in Hip-Hop have seemingly gone unnoticed. Check out our list of Hip-Hop legends who deserve their flowers while they can smell them.
Ludacris

Before rappers like Big Sean and DaBaby captivated fans with their animated delivery, wild punchlines and humorous videos, Ludacris had the game on lock. His major label debut album Back for the First Time, spawned several hit records that many fans deem to be instant classics — including the Neptunes- produced track “What’s Your Fantasy.”
While Atlanta was still finding their identity in Hip-Hop, Luda continued cranking out chart topping records and big budget music videos throughout the 2000s. But after years of hard work and a Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2007 for Release Therapy, he started to feel that his contributions to Hip-Hop weren’t being acknowledged. In May 2023, Luda appeared on the All The Smoke podcast and revealed that Jay-Z credited his outlandish videos as the reason why Luda doesn’t receive the lyrical credit he deserves. “People ask me, ‘Why don’t you think [you] get the credit?’ Because I played too goddamn much…And I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Luda said.

Patti LaBelle showed the world what a pro she is when she powered through her tribute to Tina Turner Sunday (June 25) during the 2023 BET Awards, despite forgetting some of the lyrics to the late artist’s hit “The Best” while she was on stage. After the set, LaBelle shared with Entertainment Tonight that she gave the performance her all.
“It meant no matter what voice I’m in — I’m hoarse, I have a cold — but whatever, I had to, I was giving it up for Tina Turner, ’cause she’s simply the best,” the Grammy winner told ET of how important it was for her to honor her friend, who died in May at age 83. “So you heard a little tweak every now and then out there, but I love her, and I did my best.”

The “tweaks” the Grammy winner is referring to are the two moments when she forgot the lyrics, and ad-libbed instead. Just ahead of the first chorus, LaBelle started humming before admitting, “I’m trying my best, y’all.” Then without missing a beat, she launched into the chorus.

The second time, the celebrated singer told the live audience at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles — while singing her words completely in tune to the song — “I get … whatever. I can’t see the words I don’t know!”

A BET spokesperson later told The Hollywood Reporter that the singer’s view of the teleprompter was blocked during her tribute performance for Turner. “Due to the crowd’s enthusiasm, the teleprompter was obstructed, obscuring Ms. LaBelle’s view of the lyrics,” the rep explained. “Nonetheless, we couldn’t be more grateful to Ms. LaBelle for lending her incredible talent to this moment.”

LaBelle opened up about her performance with Good Morning America on Monday (June 26) as well, saying she was “proud” to have paid tribute to Turner on the 2023 BET Awards show. “I was so blessed to be asked to honor Tina Turner because that was my friend from back in the day. Such a wonderful woman who’s done everything — and so many people admire her,” she told ABC’s long-running morning show. “And when I did it last night, I was proud, honey! I felt really great. … I’m just in awe of Tina Turner.”

Another artist who received a tribute during the ceremony Sunday night was Takeoff. Offset and Quavo of Migos delivered a surprise set to honor their fallen bandmate in their first performance together since the 28-year-old rapper was fatally shot last November. “Do it for Take!” the two shouted as the screen transformed from a rocket to an image of the late artist.

Watch a clip from LaBelle’s GMA interview below:

“It was always a great feeling being with her and just watching her go from where she started, which was not so pleasant, to where she ended up as a super, super woman. I’m just in awe of Tina Turner.” — @MsPattiPatti on her tribute to the late Tina Turner at the #BETAwards. pic.twitter.com/TisXkCKHA9— Good Morning America (@GMA) June 26, 2023

After months of confusion, misinformation, and speculation, fans of Jamie Foxx now have another update on the Academy Award winner’s recovery. On the BET Awards red carpet on Sunday (June 25), Foxx’s Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! co-star Porscha Coleman offered an update on the Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate. “I’ve talked to people very close to Foxx, [he] […]

The 2023 BET Awards was a jam-packed night, with Beyonce, Drake, and SZA standing out among those taking home trophies. Also, Busta Rhymes received a long overdue Lifetime Achievement Award.

The annual awards night was  Sunday night (June 25th) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. It was made more so by the fact that the night was focused on the celebration of 50 years of Hip-Hop, which saw numerous tributes take place and key wins by some of the most popular artists today including Quavo & Offset of the Migos honoring their late member, Takeoff.

Beyoncé and SZA reigned supreme as the biggest winners of the evening with three awards each. In a surprise, both songstresses would tie for Album of The Year with Renaissance and SOS, respectively.  “Break My Soul” won the Viewer’s Choice Award and the BET HER Award as well. As for SZA, she would also win Video of The Year for her stylish “Kill Bill” video and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, beating out a stacked field of artists including Beyoncé, Lizzo, Ari Lennox, Tems, H.E.R., and Coco Jones.
Drake followed behind with two wins on the night for Best Collaboration for his appearance on “Wait For U” by Future featuring Nigerian singer Tems, and Best Group for his team-up with 21 Savage for the hit album Her Loss. The win was his second in the category – he previously won the award seven years ago with Future. Kendrick Lamar won Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, his record-setting sixth win in the category. He was the leader in nominations for the evening with seven. Latto would take home the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, and show love to other women rappers in her acceptance speech.

The heartwarming moment of the night came as veteran MC Busta Rhymes was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and he delivered an emotional speech detailing his journey while admonishing other rappers to stop fighting among themselves.
“Y’all messing up the bag. Y’all messing up the energy. I don’t like when I talk to these dudes that run these streaming platforms and they talking about, ‘You know, we turning the consumer off because there’s so much little this and little that going on with you rappers.’ We’re gonna stop that. We’re gonna love each other, and we gonna get to this money,” he said.
