Dry shampoos have risen to become a staple hair grooming product in most styling routines, whether it’s to provide volume, prolong washing your hair or to lend a helping hand in maintaining a blowout. No matter what your hair goals are, incorporating the best dry shampoo into your styling routine can help eliminate odor as well as soak up grease and oil — no salon appointment required.

What is considered the best dry shampoo? You don’t want to grab the first can you see, as some formulas can leave a powdery residue or weigh your strands down, resulting in a look that will have you feeling the opposite of a good hair day.

Before you reach for just any dry shampoo, Billboard Shopping spoke with celebrity hairstylist and star of Paramount+ reality show Blowing LA‘s Ted Gibson to get his expert insight on the best formulas to use, no matter what your budget and hair texture are. With clientele including Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Rachel Brosnahan, Lupita Nyong’o, Gabrielle Union and more, it’s no secret the hairstylist knows his way around hair products.

Keep reading to see Gibson’s picks, as well as how to use dry shampoo and ingredients to look out for.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

At first sight, it may look easy to use dry shampoo, whether you’re looking to maintain a blowout using your go-to blowdryer or hiding the fact you’re going on day three of unwashed hair. If you spray too close, you may get an unwanted residue, whereas spraying too far may not get enough of the product in your strands. Gibson recommends you “Spray 4 to 6 inches away from the scalp concentrating on the scalp and not the hair.”

Don’t just leave it, though — he further adds that “After you have applied it, massage the scalp to evenly distribute [the product around] the entire scalp.”

Best Dry Shampoo Ingredients

Gibson suggests when searching for the right dry shampoo for yourself, you “Look for Vegan and cruelty-free formulas.” This usually includes plant-based ingredients like argan oil, avocado oil, castor oil, black seed oil, murumuru butter and aloe vera.

“I think spray is good, but sometimes I do prefer a powder depending on what I want to accomplish and time for application,” he adds. “I have used them for covers of magazines as well as red carpet events.”

Instead of waiting for the next major sale, TikTokers have come to the rescue with e.l.f.’s lip oil, which looks practically indistinguishable and is only $8 compared to Dior’s $40. According to some users, both lip oil formulas share a similar scent with e.l.f.’s smelling more “pepperminty” than Dior’s.

If you’re still looking for gifts for everyone on your list, e.l.f.’s version makes a wallet-friendly stocking stuffer as well as a thoughtful last-minute gift for the makeup guru in your life.

Rather than just take their word for it, TikTok user @itsalexissimone tested out the Mahogany Dior shade next to e.l.f.’s Jam Session to show off whether there are any major differences.

“If anything, the e.l.f. side has more color,” they said in the video. “I’m telling you, it feels the exact same on both sides.”

Dior’s lip oil is on sale at Saks Off Fifth for 15% off, but as one commenter noted, they could “buy every color of the e.l.f. lip oil for less than two of the Dior.” And with seven shades of the alternative lip oil to choose from, that’s enough to wear a different one every day of the week.

For anyone looking to save $32 and enjoy a luxury look for less, you can shop the dupe below — or scroll to the bottom to snag the Dior lip oil for 15% off.

Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the baddest gal of them all? Rihanna has delivered another gorgeous photo campaign for Fenty Beauty, as revealed on the brand’s Instagram account.
“New lockscreen alert 😍” read Fenty’s post, a photo of the “Rude Boy” singer staring down the camera with her hazel eyes partially obscured by her long bangs.

In the photo, Rih pairs a white bathrobe with an abundance of jewelry undoubtedly worth several dollar signs, including a silver ornament on her ring finger. Her makeup is simple but glamorous in the shot: sparkly eye shadow, smokey black liner and a muted red lip, perfect for the holidays.

“Y’all red-y for this @badgalriri serve of the century?” continued Fenty’s caption. “All eyes on Muva’s sultry, stunning night out #FENTYFACE slay 💃🏽 And you already know the lips stay on RED! 💋”

The look earned the singer-mogul quite a few all-caps compliments, including one fan who wrote: “THE MOST VALUABLE FACE CARD.”

Another simply commented, “QUEEN ICON LEGEND.”

Rihanna’s effortless glam look came shortly after a hilarious video from Fenty, in which the “Umbrella” artist talks to herself while doing her makeup in the mirror — although the audio is missing, and for good reason. “When you’re talking about the other trash a– mascaras on the market and have to mute the video,” says a voice-caption over the clip.

As fans know all too well, it’s been ages since Rihanna last dropped an album (2016’s ANTI, which topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks upon its release). False hope recently emerged that the Grammy winner was planning a world tour with Live Nation for next year, but an inside source confirmed to Billboard that there was no merit to the rumors.

Instead, it looks like she’s keeping busy with her booming beauty business, as well as mom life; the businesswoman shares two sons with rapper A$AP Rocky.
