Taylor Swift and K-pop set the benchmark for global album sales in 2023, new data published by the IFPI reveals.
Following the release last week of its Global Music Report 2023, the IFPI published three year-end albums charts, breaking down the biggest titles by sales and formats (vinyl and streaming).

The K-pop phenomenon continues to power ahead, proof of which can be seen on the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart 2023.  SEVENTEEN’s FML leads an all-K-pop top five on the tally, which measures global unit sales – or “pure sales” – across all physical formats, as well as full album downloads.

Following its release in 2023, FML landed at No. 1 in South Korea and Japan, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell 6.4 million units globally, sending the title to No. 1 on the previously-announced IFPI Global Album Chart. FML also smashed the record for most pre-orders ever for an album in South Korea, according to the Federation.

An “unprecedented” 19 of the top 20 titles on the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart were created by South Korean acts, demonstrating the K-pop genre’s “global dominance of the physical album format,” reads a statement from the IFPI, issued Thursday, March 28.

Trending on Billboard

The one only non-Korean act to crack the top 20 (at No. 6) was reigning, four-time IFPI global recording artist of the year Taylor Swift, whose album 1989 (Taylor’s Version) also topped the IFPI Global Vinyl Album Chart. Indeed, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) leads an all-TayTay top 3 on the wax tally, ahead of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and Midnights, respectively. Swift snags seven of the top 20, including folklore (at No. 7), Lover (No. 9), evermore (No. 13) and Red (Taylor’s Version) (No. 15).

U.S. country star Morgan Wallen lassos his first IFPI Global Chart No. 1 with One Thing at a Time, his Billboard 200 leader. The 36-track double LP tops the IFPI Global Streaming Album Chart, which counts global streams from both ad-supported and subscription platforms. The streaming list calculates a weighted global unit number taking into account differing economics across regions. Wallen also appears at No. 9 with Dangerous: The Double Album, released in 2021.

“As highlighted in IFPI’s Global Music Report,” comments Lewis Morrison, director of global charts & certifications at IFPI, revenues from both digital and physical music formats continue to see healthy growth, and the combination of fantastic artistry, format variety and the tireless work of record labels is the foundation on which this growth is built.

The charts, he continues, “are a great summary of a fantastic year for global recorded music.”

Elbow turns up the volume with Audio Vertigo, the leader on the midweek U.K. chart.
Audio Vertigo is the Bury, England band’s 10th studio album. And if it holds its position, the collection will give Guy Garvey and Co. their fourth U.K. leader after 2014’s The Take Off And Landing Of Everything, 2017’s Little Fictions and 2019’s Giants Of All Sizes.

Based on sales and streaming data captured at the midweek point, the British alternative rock outfit holds off Future and Metro Boomin’s collaborative collection, We Don’t Trust You. It’s at No. 2 on the midweek chart, and should become Future’s fourth and Metro Boomin’s third U.K. top 10 album. Three tracks from it are aiming for top 20 debuts on the national singles survey.

Veteran Scottish alt-rock act the Jesus and Mary Chain could snag a career-best with Glasgow Eyes. It’s forecast to complete an all-new top 3, at No. 3, for the group’s third top 10 title.

Following the release of a deluxe edition, Olivia Rodrigo’s former leader GUTS should spill into the top 10 once again. It’s up 15-4 on the chart blast. The LP, which originally logged a single week at No. 1 in 2023, should yield the week’s highest new Official Singles Chart entry, with “Obsessed” predicted to bow at No. 6. The “Spilled” version of GUTS includes five more songs, including a new cut, “So American”; the other four songs were the “secret” tracks that appeared on a variety of GUTS vinyl releases: “Obsessed,” “Scared of My Guitar,” “Stranger” and “Girl I’ve Always Been”.

Finally, new titles from Starsailor (Where The Wild Things Grow), Fletcher (In Search Of The Antidote) and The Staves (All Now) are cruising for top 10 berths, while LPs from Waxahatchee (Tigers Blood at No. 12), a project led by Alabama-born singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield, and Gossip (Real Power at No. 18) could bag top 20 debuts.

All will be revealed when the Official Charts are published late Friday, March 29.

Another beautiful week is unfolding for Benson Boone in the U.K., where his global hit “Beautiful Things” (via Warner Records) is on track for a second week at No. 1.

The Washington-born singer-songwriter’s breakthrough song has led both of Billboard’s Global singles tallies and, for the first time, lifted to No. 1 in the U.K. last week.

Based on early sales and streaming data published by the Official Charts Company, “Beautiful Things” should nail another cycle at the top in the U.K.

Thanks to the release of the deluxe GUTS (spilled) edition, Olivia Rodrigo should bag the highest new entry with “Obsessed.” It’s new at No. 6 on the chart blast, and should give the U.S. pop phenomenon her 12th U.K. top 10 single.

Trending on Billboard

Rodrigo has set several U.K. chart records in her young career. When her debut album SOUR hit No. 1 on the U.K.’s Official Chart in May 2021 in the same week her single “Good 4 U” led the national singles survey, she became, at 18 years and 3 months, the youngest solo artist to snag the U.K. chart double.

Along the way, SOUR set the U.K. mark record for the most first-week streams for a debut album, and, in June 2021, Rodrigo became the first female solo artist to land three simultaneous U.K. top 5 singles: “Good 4 U,” “Déjà vu” and “Traitor.” SOUR logged five total weeks at No. 1, and GUTS completed one week at the top.

Meanwhile, Future and Metro Boomin’s collaborative LP We Don’t Trust You should drop the maximum three tracks into the U.K. singles chart, all impacting the top 20. Based on early predictions, “Like That” is poised to enter at No. 7, “Type Shit” could start at No. 11 and the title track could bow at No. 14.

Finally, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is targeting a No. 16 with his new song, “Too Sweet.” It’s on target for a No. 16 start.

All will be revealed when the Official Charts are published late Friday, March 29.

Ariana Grande‘s Eternal Sunshine (via Republic Records) continues to blaze over the U.K. chart.
The leader at the midweek mark, Grande’s seventh studio album enters a second week at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, where it’s her fifth leader after Dangerous Woman (2016), Sweetener (2018), thank u, next (2019) and Positions (2020).

Eternal Sunshine holds off the Weeknd’s The Highlights (Republic Records/XO), which lifts 3-2 for its equal peak position. The Canadian R&B star’s hits collection has now logged 163 weeks on the U.K. tally, none of them at No. 1.

The highest new entry this week belongs to Kacey Musgraves, whose sixth studio LP Deeper Well (Interscope) digs in at No. 3. That’s a career best for the U.S. country artist, and third top 10 appearance following 2018’s Golden Hour (No. 6) and 2021’s star-crossed (No. 10).

Trending on Billboard

Deeper Well is the best-seller on vinyl during the most recent chart week, the Official Charts Company reports.

Also new to the chart is Justin Timberlake’s sixth studio collection, Everything I Thought I Was. It’s new at No. 5 for JT’s sixth top 10 – a list that includes his solo leaders Justified (2002), FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006), The 20/20 Experience (2013), plus The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 and 2018’s Man of the Woods, both of which peaked at No. 2.

Hotly-tipped newcomer Caity Baser bags her first U.K. top 10 album with Still Learning, the Southampton-born, Brighton-based artist’s 13-track debut mixtape. It’s new at No. 7. Baser was nominated for the 2024 BRITs Rising Star award, won by The Last Dinner Party.

Also, Manchester, England rapper Nemzzz nabs his first slot on the Official U.K. Albums Chart appearance with his debut Do Not Disturb (Nemzzz), new at No. 17.

Eternal Sunshine (via Universal) last week became Grande’s fifth No. 1 when it bowed at No. 1 on the ARIA Chart.

On the latest tally, published Friday, March 22, Grande’s seventh studio album leads a trio of Taylor Swift titles, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), Lover and Folklore (all via Universal), respectively.

Trending on Billboard

The top debut on the latest frame belongs to Peter Garrett, frontman with ARIA Hall of Fame inducted rock legends Midnight Oil, who checks in at No. 17 with his second solo album, The True North (Sony). Its predecessor, A Version Of Now, peaked at No. 3 in 2016. As frontman with the Oils, as they’re affectionately known in these parts, Garrett landed seven No. 1 albums, from Red Sails In The Sunset in 1984 to Resist in 2022.

Further down the list, Justin Timberlake drops in with his sixth album, Everything I Thought I Was (RCA/Sony), new No. 23. All of JT’s five previous albums reached the top 10 in Australia, with FutureSex/LoveSounds logging one week at No. 1 in 2006 and The 20/20 Experience leading the chart for two weeks in 2013, ARIA reports. EITIW is the followup to 2018’s Man Of The Woods, which peaked at No. 2.

Also making a top 40 appearance is U.S. country star Kacey Musgraves with Deeper Well (Mercury/Universal). It’s new at No. 26. Deeper Well is her fifth non-seasonal studio album, four of which have charted here, with her most LP, 2021’s Star-Crossed, becoming her first top 10 album in Australia, with a No. 9 peak.

Meanwhile, Benson Boone enters a third week at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with “Beautiful Things” (Warner) ahead of Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine cut “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” and Djo’s “End Of Beginning” (AWAL).

The top new release belongs to Dasha, as her independently-released viral track “Austin” opens its account at No. 23. Based in Nashville, via San Luis Obispo, Calif., Dasha is behind a line-dance trend that has turned the song into a U.S. country — and now ARIA Chart — hit.

Finally, “Fri(end)s” (BigHit/Universal) by BTS’s V (real name: Kim Tae-hyung) cracks the ARIA Top 50 at No. 49. With that effort, he becomes the fourth member of BTS to enjoy a solo hit in Australia, following Jimin, Jin and Jung Kook.

A beautiful week looms for Benson Boone, whose “Beautiful Things” (via Warner Records) leads the U.K. chart race.
“Beautiful Things” has topped the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. surveys but, in eight weeks on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, has never gone higher than No. 2.

That could be about to change. Based on midweek sales and streaming data published by the OCC, the Washington-born singer-songwriter’s breakout hit takes pole position, lifting 2-1.

Meanwhile, after four weeks at the summit – for her longest U.K. reign – Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” (Columbia/Parkwood Ent) finally loses its grip. It’s down 1-2 on the midweek tally.

Closing out the top three on the chart blast is Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love),” up 6-3. The track is housed on Grande’s current U.K. No. 1 album, Eternal Sunshine (Republic Records), her fifth leader.

The top new release at the midway mark belongs to Mark Knopfler, whose charity fundraising single “Going Home” (BMG) is set for a top 10 start.

The former Dire Straits frontman assembled a starry cast of guitar heroes for the 9-minute recording, a remake of the theme from the 1983 feature film Local Hero. The likes of David Gilmour, Ronnie Wood, Slash, Eric Clapton, Sting, Joan Armatrading, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Jett, Pete Townshend and the late Jeff Beck are among the scores of performers on the recording, which raises funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.

“Going Home” had briefly led the U.K. chart race, but slips to No. 6 midweek. The original cut, an instrumental, spent three weeks on the chart in 1983 with a peak of No. 56. The Northern Englishman recently sold 120 guitars and amplifiers, with charities the British Red Cross, Tusk, Brave Hearts of the North East and Teenage Cancer Trust among the beneficiaries.

Also eyeing a top 10 berth is BTS member V (real name: Kim Tae-hyung), whose “FRI(END)S” (BigHit Entertainment) is predicted to open at No. 7. That would mark V’s first solo U.K. top tier appearance. If “FRI(END)S” holds its course, V would join bandmates Jimin (“Like Crazy” at No. 8) and Jung Kook (“Too Much” with The Kid Laroi and Central Cee at No. 10, “3D” with Jack Harlow at No. 5, “Standing Next To You” at No. 5, and “Seven” with Latto at No.3) as the BTS members with U.K. solo top 10 notches on their belts.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday, March 22.

Ariana Grande is on track for another week atop the U.K. chart with Eternal Sunshine (via Republic Records). Though she has competition.
Based on midweek sales and streaming data captured by the Official Charts Company, Eternal Sunshine has a slim edge and should clinch a second week at No. 1. Eternal Sunshine became Grande’s fifth U.K. leader when it debuted at the zenith of the national chart last Friday, March 15.

As it stands, less than 1,000 chart units separate Grande’s seventh studio album with U.S. country artist Kacey Musgraves’ sixth LP, Deeper Well (Interscope).

There’s another challenger in this race: Caity Baser and her 13-track mixtape Still Learning (EMI). The collection is just 1,500 behind the leader in third place on the OCC‘s chart blast. Baser was shortlisted for the BRITs Rising Star 2024 award, won by The Last Dinner Party.

Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake’s solo comeback album Everything I Thought I Was (RCA) should yield the U.S. pop star a sixth U.K. top 10. It’s new at No. 4 on the Official Chart Update.

U.S. rock veterans the Black Crowes could nab a third U.K. top 10 album, and first in 30 years, with Happiness Bastards (Silver Arrow), set to open at No. 7.

As AC/DC celebrates 50 years rocking, the legendary Australian band releases its full set of albums on vinyl. The first nine reissues in the “AC/DC 50” collection dropped March 15, powering several classics up the midweek chart. Among them, the rockers’ 1980 blockbuster Back in Black (Epic), their first U.K. No. 1, which rebounds to No. 10 on the midweek chart, while 1979’s Highway to Hell drives to No. 22, against an historic peak of No. 8.

Finally, new releases from electronic music producer Four Tet (Three at No. 25 via Text), teenage Manchester rapper Nemzzz (Do Not Disturb at No. 31 via Nemzzz), and Hastings, England punk outfit Kid Kapichi (There Goes The Neighbourhood at No. 36 via Spinefarm) are on track for top 40 debuts.

All will be revealed when the Official Albums Chart is published Friday, March 22.

Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” (via Columbia/Parkwood Ent) is still the one to beat in the U.K., where it clocks a fourth consecutive week at No. 1.
That’s a personal best streak for Bey, improving on the three-week peaks of 2003’s “Crazy In Love” with Jay-Z and 2007’s “Beautiful Liar” with Shakira. It also bests the two No. 1 singles she earned as a member of Destiny’s Child — 2000’s “Independent Women” and 2001’s “Survivor,” which both logged one week at the top.

Up-and-coming U.S. R&B singer-songwriter 4batz makes his Official U.K. Chart debut with “act ii – date @ 8” (via 4batz OVO Sound) featuring Drake, new at No. 18, while California artist Dasha makes her U.K. top 40 debut country track “Austin,” up 57-25.

Also cracking the top 40 for the first time is Colorado indie-folk act Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners with “Evergreen” (via Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners) up 41-37.

Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine (via Republic Records) enjoys the brightest possible start in the U.K., where it opens its account at No. 1.

The only Grande titles to miss the U.K. chart throne are her 2013 debut Yours Truly (No. 7 peak) and her sophomore album from 2014, My Everything (No. 3). Eternal Sunshine was the best-seller on wax during the chart week, the Official Charts Company reports.
