The SOAR Awards are executive produced by Royal W. Jackson, executive vice president, Impact Network. The show is presented in partnership with SOAR Radio, which originated the SOAR Awards in 2017.

“As the creator of SOAR Radio and the SOAR Awards, I am immensely proud of the incredible journey we’ve embarked on since our inaugural show in 2017,” Justin Francis, SOAR Radio and Awards founder and CEO, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with the Impact Network, a collaboration that elevates the SOAR Awards to new heights.”

This is the first music honors special for The Impact Network, a Black-founded and operated cable network based in Detroit. The show is set to premiere two days after Juneteenth, which is celebrated on June 19, and right in the heart of Black Music Month.

“Honoring gospel legends through heartfelt tributes not only preserves their contributions but also inspires future generations,” Impact Network Founder and CEO Wayne T. Jackson said in a statement. “We are excited to share this moving event with our viewers and continue to champion the enduring power of gospel music.”

In addition to the SOAR Awards, Impact Network is creating 30-second vignettes that celebrate influential Black music figures and musical moments across various genres.

Impact Network recently aired its first tentpole special, The 5th Annual Pink Awards, which recognizes achievements in the fight against breast cancer.

The early returns are excellent for Billie Eilish’s third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. The album enters the Billboard 200 at No. 2 with 339,000 equivalent album units — Eilish’s largest week to date by units earned. Peter Frampton will become the inaugural recipient of the Les Paul Spirit Award on Sunday, June 9, at a private event at the Gibson Garage Nashville. The event will take place on what would have been Paul’s 109th birthday.
The annual award, in partnership with Gibson Gives, the philanthropic division of Gibson, is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late Les Paul through innovation, engineering, technology and/or music. In addition to the award, a grant from the Les Paul Foundation will be made in the honoree’s name to the charity of his choice.

Frampton will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year. His 1976 album Frampton Comes Alive! is one of the bestselling live albums in history. The double-disk album topped the Billboard 200 for 10 nonconsecutive weeks and spawned three major hits on the Billboard Hot 100 – “Show Me the Way,” “Baby, I Love Your Way” and “Do You Feel (Like We Do).” Frampton’s use of the talk box to create a human and guitar hybrid sound on the latter hit was considered groundbreaking.

Frampton Comes Alive! received a Grammy nod for album of the year. Thirty years later, Frampton’s Fingerprints won a Grammy for best pop instrumental album.

“I cannot think of anyone more fitting to be honored with this year’s Les Paul Spirit Award than Peter Frampton,” Michael Braunstein, executive director of The Les Paul Foundation, said in a statement. “Not only is he an extraordinary talent who has given us an amazing array of extraordinary music, but he is an innovator who understands music, technologies and the spirit of Les Paul. If Les were still alive today, I have absolutely no doubt that he and Peter would be experimenting together at Les’ house.”

Paul, who died in 2009 at age 94, won Grammys for best instrumental performance in pop, rock and country categories, a sign of his broad influence. He received a trustees award from the Recording Academy in 1983 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an early/musical influence in 1988. In addition to his innovations with the guitar, Paul was half of one of the top vocal duos of the 1950s. Les Paul and Mary Ford’s biggest hits were “How High the Moon” and “Vaya Con Dios (May God Be With You).”

The Les Paul Spirit Award is made from hand-carved acoustic boards built by Paul that he used in his home studio. Given the unique nature of the studio pieces which are being used to create them, no two Les Paul Spirit Awards will be exactly the same.

Frampton, 74, was diagnosed with a degenerative muscle condition called inclusion body myositis in 2019. (According to Johns Hopkins, IBM “causes muscle weakness that may worsen over time and damage the muscles.”) He continues to write and perform.

The vibe at the 2024 Ivor Novello Awards at Grosvenor House in London on Thursday night (May 23) swung from gentle ribbing among two of rock‘s most active seniors to a serious moment from one of today’s most influential songwriters about the importance of speaking out about domestic violence.
Lana Del Rey, 38, accepted a Special International Award celebrating her career and influence, during which she decried the rise of relationship-based violence. “When I started, I think a lot of things were written about how the songs were sort of navel-gazing and just about me and my experience with challenging relationships,” Del Rey said, according to the Evening Standard.

“Now I think what we’ve seen is that those songs were not written about a small microcosm of people and women, we’re seeing a huge amount of things written about difficult relationships,” Del Rey continued. “And even when COVID began, the second epidemic in the United States (we saw for) interpersonal relationships violence, it increased by 300%. So, you know, I just think it’s amazing that female singer-songwriters, you know, have the freedom to write about absolutely whatever they want.”

Trending on Billboard

The singer added, “It was always nerve wrecking to think that writing about your relationships were maybe something that could be seen as self-gratuitous, feigning vulnerability. I heard that a lot. But I mean it’s a very vulnerable thing, not just for women. But for men. I’ve learned so much in the last few years, from my peers about having a challenging time in music.”

The mood was decidedly lighter when Sir Paul McCartney, 81, ribbed youngster Bruce Springsteen, 74, while presenting the Boss with the Fellowship of the Ivors Academy prize, the highest honor the organization gives out. While ushering in the first international songwriter the Academy has included in the Fellowship — following in the footsteps of Elton John, Kate Bush and Macca himself — the former Beatle had fun while handing the award to the Jersey rock icon, according to NME.

“Like Bruce’s concerts, I’m going to keep this brief,” McCartney said in a joke about Bruce’s legendarily lengthy shows, adding the quip that he couldn’t think of a more fitting recipient for the honor, “except maybe Bob Dylan, or Paul Simon, or Billy Joel, or Beyoncé, or Taylor Swift. The list goes on.”

Sir Paul then got in a final razz about Springsteen’s performance stamina. “He’s known as the American working man, but he admits he’s never worked a day in his life,” the equally indefatigable pop legend said.

Raye, Bruce Springsteen, Lana Del Rey, Bernie Taupin, KT Tunstall and more were honored at the 2024 Ivor Novello Awards, which were held at Grosvenor House in London on Thursday (May 23). The Ivors with Amazon Music, as the awards are officially branded, went to 26 songwriters and composers across 14 categories.
This year’s Songwriter of the Year with Amazon Music went to Raye. The win caps a busy 12 months since the release of her debut album, My 21st Century Blues. On March 2, Raye became the first artist to win six awards in a single night at the Brit Awards. Her haul included British album of the year, British artist of the year and best new artist. Before her breakthrough as an artist, Raye wrote for artists including Charli XCX, Little Mix, Beyoncé, John Legend, Ellie Goulding and Zara Larsson.

Springsteen was in attendance to receive Fellowship of The Ivors Academy, the highest honor the organization bestows. Springsteen is the first international songwriter that the Academy has inducted into Fellowship. Springsteen, who has won an Oscar and seven Grammys for his songwriting (out of 20 Grammys total), was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1999.

This year’s Special International Award celebrated Del Rey’s career and influence. Del Rey has received three Grammy nominations for her songwriting, including song of the year nods for “Norman F–king Rockwell” and “A&W.” She also received a Grammy nod for best song written for visual media for “Young and Beautiful” (from Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby).

Del Rey will soon receive another award. On Thursday (May 23), the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) announced that she will receive this year’s NMPA Songwriter Icon award. The award will be presented at the organization’s annual meeting at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City on June 12.

Taupin was recognized with the Ivor Novello for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. It is the ninth Ivor Novello awarded to Taupin, 50 years on from his first win for “Daniel” with Sir Elton John in 1974. Though best known for his legendary songwriting partnership with John, Taupin has also written for artists as diverse as Starship, Heart, Willie Nelson, Courtney Love and Brian Wilson.

Taupin and John were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992 and received the Johnny Mercer Award, that organization’s highest honor, in 2013. The pair won an Oscar for best original song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman, but Taupin has been under-recognized at the Grammys – just two nominations – best original score written for a motion picture or a TV special for Friends (a 1971 movie, not the iconic TV series of the same name) and best country song for “Mendocino County Line,” which was recorded by Willie Nelson and Lee Ann Womack.

Tunstall received the Outstanding Song Collection with PRS for Music award, recognizing her creative trail across a 20-year career. It comes 18 years after she claimed her first Ivor Novello Award for “Suddenly I Seem,” which won Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 2006.

Jerskin Fendrix’s debut film score for Poor Things took home Best Original Film Score. Poor Things was nominated for an Oscar for best original score but lost to Ludwig Göransson’s Oppenheimer.

Best Album was awarded to Black Classical Music, written by Yussef Dayes, Rocco Palladino and Charlie Stacey. The album is seen as a significant advance for the burgeoning London jazz scene. Judges praised Black Classical Music for using a modern lens to reframe the format of instrumental music.

Best Contemporary Song was claimed by Kwake Bass, Peter Bennie, Biscuit and Raven Bush of Speakers Corner Quartet alongside Kae Tempest for “Geronimo Blues.” This is the first Ivor Novello Award that these songwriters have received.

Having won the 2023 Rising Star Award, Victoria Canal won Best Song Musically and Lyrically with “Black Swan,” alongside Jonny Lattimer and Eg White. Canal performed the song live at the awards ceremony.

Dave, Central Cee, Jo Caleb and Jonny Leslie won PRS for Music Most Performed Work for their collaboration on “Sprinter,” the U.K.’s biggest song of 2023. Dave and Central Cee have previously been nominated for Songwriter of the Year, with Dave claiming the award in 2022.

Grime star Skepta was recognized with the Visionary Award with Amazon Music.

Now in its fifth year, the Rising Star Award with Amazon Music champions Britain and Ireland’s most promising songwriting talents. Claiming the prize this year is Master Peace, whose songwriting was praised for its intelligent blend of genres.

Arthur Sharpe won Best Television Soundtrack with his original composition for The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies. This is the second time the British composer has won the award. He also claimed it in 2022 with his score for Landscapers.

The award for Best Original Video Game Score went to Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. It was praised for staying true to John Williams’ original music while moving into its own authentic world.

“On behalf of The Ivors Academy and all the songwriters and composers we represent, it’s an honor to recognize extraordinary work and brilliant individuals behind it,” Tom Gray, chair of The Ivors Academy, said in a statement.

In celebration of The Ivors 2024, Amazon Music have released three new Amazon Music Original tracks. American singer-songwriter METTE has covered “Bennie and the Jets” by John and Taupin. The War on Drugs have paid tribute to Springsteen with covers of his “Dry Lightning” and “Highway 29.”

The Ivor Novello Awards, now in their 69th year, are judged by songwriters and composers from The Ivors Academy.

Here’s a complete list of the nominations for The Ivors 2024, with winners marked, followed by a list of non-competitive awards.

Twenty-five years after leading the list of nominees to the first edition of the Latin Grammys, Carlos Vives will receive the highest honor from the Latin Recording Academy: the Colombian artist has been named the 2024 Person of the Year.
Vives — winner of 18 Latin Grammy Awards, two Grammy Awards and a Billboard Latin Music Awards Hall of Fame inductee — “will be honored for his more than three-decade career as a multifaceted singer and composer, as well as for his continued commitment to environmental and social initiatives,” according to an official statement released Wednesday (May 22) morning.

“Carlos Vives is one of the most prolific and beloved artists of our time, whose commitment to Latin music and support for the new generations truly personifies the values of our Academy,” said Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy. “We honor him as our Person of the Year for his vast contributions to our musical heritage and for his many philanthropic initiatives.”

Trending on Billboard

“It’s still surprising to me,” Vives told Billboard Español this week in an exclusive interview. “It’s like a message that the Academy gives at the end, because 32 years ago I chose a path [that was unconventional]. To be successful, to be commercial, there was one way. This other path that’s cultural or has to do with your identity, that doesn’t work, [they would say].”

In Wednesday’s press release, he added: “I am honored and moved to have been chosen as the 2024 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year. It is the reward for an authentic journey, for a wonderful team and, above all, it is the recognition of the musical spirits of our Latin American diversity. These spirits taught us to love and enrich our language, to take care of it and to respect it in order to exalt humanity with it.”

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Carlos Vives is one of the most respected artists in Spanish-language music and a pioneer of a new Latin American sound, redefining traditional Colombian vallenato by incorporating to it pop and rock sounds. With No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts such as “Volví a Nacer,” “Fruta Fresca” and “La Bicicleta” with Shakira, among others, has become an ambassador of Colombian and Latin American culture around the world.

His commitment to good causes transcend the musical realm. In 2015, he created the Tras La Perla initiative to promote the sustainable development of Santa Marta and its ecosystem. In addition, he created the Escuela de Música Río Grande to offer artistic experiences to children and young people, and founded the record label Gaira Música Local to promote new Colombian talent. He’s also been a strong advocate and generous supporter of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation since its inception, the Latin Recording Academy highlights, and sponsored its annual Prodigy Scholarship in 2018.

His latest album, Escalona: Nunca Se Había Grabado Así, earned him his 18th Latin Grammy when it was crowned best cumbia/vallenato album in 2023. This year he was also recognized with the ASCAP Founders Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

Vives will be feted as Person of the Year at a special star-studded gala and tribute concert where an array of artist and friends will perform renditions of his renowned repertoire. Details of the event, to be presented in November during the 2024 Latin Grammy week in Miami, will be announced at a later date.

The Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year honors musicians and their artistic achievements in the Latin music industry as well as their humanitarian efforts. Past honorees are Laura Pausini (2023), Marco Antonio Solís (2022), Rubén Blades (2021), Juanes (2019), Maná (2018), Alejandro Sanz (2017), Marc Anthony (2016), Roberto Carlos (2015), Joan Manuel Serrat (2014), Miguel Bosé (2013), Caetano Veloso (2012), Shakira (2011), Plácido Domingo (2010), Juan Gabriel (2009), Gloria Estefan (2008), Juan Luis Guerra (2007), Ricky Martin (2006), José José (2005), Carlos Santana (2004), Gilberto Gil (2003), Vicente Fernández (2002), Julio Iglesias (2001) and Emilio Estefan (2000).
