Zach Bryan and Beyoncé are the leading nominees for the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, with 19 and 17 nods, respectively. They are followed in the nominations tally by Kacey Musgraves (15), Shaboozey (12), Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen (11 each) and then Luke Combs (10).
Thus, three of the top six nominees are Black, something that would have seemed unlikely at a country music awards show not too many years ago.

Trending on Billboard

Wallen was the leading nominee for last year’s inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, with 11 nods, though he received just three awards. Jelly Roll was last year’s top winner, with four awards.

The show has added six new categories this year, all of them song categories: female song, male song, group/duo song, cover song, new artist song and storyteller song.

Nine of this year’s 18 categories are devoted to songs. Six are artist awards and one each are for albums, music videos and concert tours.

Hosted by Shania Twain, the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards will air live Thursday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT across NBC and Peacock from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Twain is the only woman in the running for The Concert Tour of 2024. She is nominated for Shania Twain: Come on Over – The Las Vegas Residency – All the Hits!

Three of the eight artists nominated for the top award, The People’s Artist of 2024, are women: Beyoncé, Musgraves and Lainey Wilson. This is up from two women in the finals in this category last year. The five men nominated in the category this year are Brown, Combs, Wallen and Bryan (who were also nominated in this category last year) plus Jelly Roll (who is nominated in this category for the first time).

Bryan has two of the eight nominees for The Song of 2024: “I Remember Everything” (feat. Musgraves) and “Pink Skies.” He also has two of the eight nominees for The Collaboration Song of 2024: “I Remember Everything” (feat. Musgraves) and “Hey Driver” (feat. The War and Treaty).

Beyoncé has two of the eight nominees for The Female Song of 2024: “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ’Em.” She also has two of the eight nominees for The Cover Song of 2024: her updates of The Beatles’ “Blackbiird” and Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

Post Malone has two of the eight nominees for The Music Video of 2024: “I Had Some Help” (feat. Wallen) and “Pour Me a Drink” (feat. Blake Shelton). Musgraves has two of the eight nominees for The Storyteller Song of 2024: “Deeper Well” and “Too Good to Be True.”

With 12 nominations, Shaboozey is the likely front-runner to win The New Artist of 2024 (which Jelly Roll won last year). He faces Chase Matthew, Chayce Beckham, Dasha, Koe Wetzel, Nate Smith, Tucker Wetmore and Warren Zeiders.

The show bills itself as “an award show for the people and by the people.” Winners are chosen entirely by the fans. Voting begins now and runs through Friday, Aug. 23, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Fans can vote online at VotePCCA.com. Votes cast on Turbo Tuesday, Aug. 20, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. ET, will count twice, equaling a maximum of two votes per day, per category. (Complete rules can be found here.)

A limited number of show tickets and VIP packages are available now at Opry.com.

The People’s Choice Country Awards are produced by Den of Thieves. Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski will executive produce, along with RAC Clark as executive producer and showrunner.

A red carpet pre-show, Live From E!: People’s Choice Country Awards, will kick off the night at 6 p.m. ET/PT on E! The pre-show is produced by Den of Thieves with executive producers Ignjatovic, Prager and Bialkowski.

The recipient of the MTV lifetime achievement award is expected to be announced later this week.

LONDON — Jorja Smith, CASISDEAD and Barry Can’t Swim are among the leading nominees for the 2024 Association of Independent Music (AIM) Awards, which recognize the achievements of the artists, labels, entrepreneurs and companies that make up the U.K.’s indie sector.
The 14th edition of the annual awards show is set for Oct. 17 at London’s Roundhouse venue. Nominees also include D-Block Europe, Kim Gordon, Actress, rapper Skrapz, Mount Kimbie, Anohni and the Johnsons and jazz nine-piece Nubiyan Twist, who are all in the running for the best independent album prize alongside Smith and electronic music producer Barry Can’t Swim, real name Joshua Mainnie.

Trending on Billboard

R&B singer Jorja Smith, a 2019 Grammy nominee for best new artist, is also listed in the best independent track category for her hit “Little Things,” which spent 22 weeks on the Official U.K. Singles chart, peaking at No. 11.

2023 Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective are on the best track shortlist, along with Fontaines D.C., KNEECAP, Hudson Mohawke and Nikki Nair, Sampha, NikNak, Matthew Halsall, Amy Gadiaga and CASISDEAD — who was crowned best hip-hop/grime/rap act at the BRIT Awards on March 2.

Other categories announced by AIM, which represents more than 1,000 U.K. independent labels, artists and music companies, include best EP/mixtape, best remix and best video.

The five contenders for the independent breakthrough award number London rapper CASISDEAD, Barry Can’t Swim, Bar Italia, Saint Harison and Wunderhorse, who all receive free access to studio time at London’s Metropolis Studios as part of their nomination.

AIM’s One to Watch category, which has previously been collected by Nia Archives and Arlo Parks, shines a light on spoken word artist Antony Szmierek, drum and bass MC OneDa, DJ Kitty Amor and artist/producers Lynks and Miso Extra.

Nominees and winners are picked by the AIM board and a panel of expert judges with the exception of the best live performer award, which is decided by a public vote.

In terms of most nominated indie labels, London-based Ninja Tune leads the pack with its artists receiving four nods across the categories announced so far (Actress, Barry Can’t Swim, Nabihah Iqbal and George Riley). XL Recordings, Heavenly Recordings and artist services company EGA Distro each have three acts up for prizes.

Nominations for the remaining award categories, including best boutique label and independent champion, as well as live performers at this year’s ceremony will be announced in the coming months, said AIM. Sponsors and media partners for October’s awards include Spotify, Vevo, Meta, Notion, Amazon Music and the BBC.

Gee Davy, interim AIM CEO, said that this year’s nominees “spans the regions and nations, genres and communities of the U.K.’s independent music scene, recognizing success, talent and artistry.”

Ruth Barlow, the not-for-profit organization’s chair, said in a statement that the 2024 awards shortlist provides “a great glimpse into the length and breadth of the U.K.’s independent sector and highlight a handful of the innovators, culture makers and commercial successes AIM’s outstanding community has to offer.”

According to figures released earlier this year from U.K. labels trade body BPI, independently released songs and albums accounted for almost one-third of all music consumption in the U.K. in 2023 with the equivalent of more than 53 million independently released albums streamed or purchased across digital and physical formats. The U.K. is the world’s third-biggest recorded music market in IFPI’s annual rankings behind the U.S. and Japan.

Remarkably, 10 of those 14 artists are women.

MTV has bumped the date of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards from Tuesday Sept. 10 to Wednesday Sept. 11 to avoid conflicting with the planned U.S. Presidential debate between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump.

The conflict with the debate would have posed an image problem for MTV, which has made boosting voter turnout and civic engagement a part of its brand since the 1992 election, in which Bill Clinton unseated George H.W. Bush. Also, the intense interest in the first (and conceivably only) Trump/Harris debate threatened to completely overwhelm the VMAs.

Trending on Billboard

In a press release announcing the change, MTV said “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night.”

Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro are the first artists slated to perform at the awards. This will be Cabello’s third main-stage performance on the VMAs, but the first for these other artists. Carpenter performed a mash-up of “Feather” and “Nonsense” on last year’s pre-show. (The fact that Carpenter was booked on the pre-show, rather than the main show, just one year ago is a dramatic sign of how fast her rise has been this year.)

All five of the scheduled performers are 2024 VMA nominees. Carpenter is up for six awards, GloRilla for three, Roan and Alejandro for two and Cabello for one.

The show will air live from UBS Arena in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This will mark the first time the show has been held on 9/11 since the terrorist attack in 2001 made that date infamous. In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will again support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of 9/11.

The 2024 show will be held just three days shy of the 40th anniversary of the inaugural VMAs at Radio City Music Hall, where Madonna stole the show.

Cabello is set to perform a song from her fourth studio album, C,XOXO, which has so far reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200. Cabello’s previous main-stage performances were in 2019, alongside then-beau Shawn Mendes on “Señorita” and in 2021 on “Don’t Go Yet.” (As part of Fifth Harmony, she performed “Boss” on the VMAs pre-show in 2014.) Alejandro will perform a song from his forthcoming fifth studio album.

Latin and Latin pop crossover music has been an important part of the performance mix on VMA broadcasts since 2018. Last year, four Latin artists performed on the show – Shakira (as part of her Video Vanguard award presentation), Karol G, Peso Pluma and Anitta (the latter both solo and in tandem with K-pop stars TOMORROW X TOGETHER).

Prior to that, in 2022, J Balvin (with Ryan Castro), Anitta and Bad Bunny performed. In 2021, Ozuna, Cabello and Tainy (in tandem with Mendes) represented Latin music. In 2020, Maluma, CNCO and Nicky Jam (in tandem with Black Eyed Peas and Tyga) did the honors. In 2019, CNCO (in the pre-show), Cabello (with Mendes), Rosalía and Ozuna (in a joint performance) and J Balvin and Bad Bunny (also in a joint performance) all performed. In 2018, Jennifer Lopez (receiving a Video Vanguard award) and Maluma performed.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, with 10 nods. Her “Fortnight” collaborator Post Malone is second, with nine nods – eight in tandem with Swift plus one for his hit “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen. They are followed by Ariana Grande, Eminem and Carpenter (six nods each); Megan Thee Stallion and SZA (five each), and LISA, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims (four each).

Other artists with multiple nominations are Anitta, Benson Boone, Bleachers, GloRilla, Dua Lipa and Tyla, with three each; and Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Roan, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Drake, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, Jung Kook, Latto, Alejandro, Sexyy Red, Tate McRae, Usher and Victoria Monét, with two each.

Fans can vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, Aug. 30. Voting for best new artist will remain active into the show on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Nominations in social categories will be announced at a later date.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers for the 2024 VMAs. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba serve as executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is music talent executive.

As Disney fans flocked to the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on Sunday evening (Aug. 11) for the Disney Legends Ceremony, one thing was clear: this was not the average award show. (Perhaps the biggest spoiler was the abundance of Mickey Mouse ears.)  The star-studded evening served as the finale to D23, a three-day event […]

On Sunday night (Aug. 11), the 2024 Disney Legends Ceremony took place in Anaheim, Calif. and welcomed 14 new members into the prestigious group — including the youngest yet, Miley Cyrus.

Host Ryan Seacrest noted that Cyrus entered the Disney family when she was just 13 years old (she is currently 31) and quickly took the network — and the world — by storm. A highlight reel of Cyrus’ history-making career then played, which included clips from her 2023 Disney+ special Miley Cyrus – Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions), memorable scenes from Hannah Montana, early interviews and more.

As the reel wrapped, a band glided onto the stage fronted by country superstar Lainey Wilson. “Miley, you might not know this but I am truly one of your biggest fans. My very first job was taking my portable sound system and a wig…and impersonating Hannah Montana,” she recalled. (Wilson talked about the experience in her Billboard cover story). “You inspired me to believe in myself. That I, too, could be an ordinary girl living in an extraordinary world. So on behalf of Hannah Montana fans everywhere, I’d like to dedicate this song to you.”

Trending on Billboard

Wilson then ripped into a passionate cover of the Hannah Montana theme song “The Best of Both Worlds.” She even added a bit of her own present-day observations on lines like, “You go to movie premiers,” swapping out “is that Orlando Bloom?” for “is that Glen Powell?”

After the performance (which Wilson called “a dream come true”), she thanked Cyrus for “never being afraid to step outside the box, always staying true to yourself and most of all for kicking butt, no matter what, girl.”

Cyrus — who was seated alongside her mom Tish in the front row, next to other honorees such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, Harrison Ford and more — then walked on stage and pulled Wilson into a warm hug. As Cyrus stepped up to the mic, she told the crowd of nearly 20,000 fans, “I am definitely going to cry,” which only warranted an even longer and louder and standing ovation.

“Before we get started,” she continued, “I’m going to let everybody in on a little Disney Legends’ secret — I’m the one that tells you what you’re not supposed to know. And what I want to say is that legends get scared too. I’m scared right now…It’s legendary to be afraid and do it anyway. There’s no such thing as failure when you try.”

Cyrus then unveiled two different speeches she prepared: “One long, if I’m the badass I’m supposed to be. And one short, if I get scared.” (Her speech spanned just over five minutes; needless to say, she chose the badass route.)

“In 2005, Disney was on a mission to rebuild and reimagine the company — that’s why they hired [Disney CEO] Bob Iger and me,” she said with a chuckle, earning a big laugh from the audience. She then recalled the “buzz” in the Burbank office where she auditioned for the role of Hannah Montana many years ago — the same office where, as she joked, “it’s rumored they create all of us Disney kids…I definitely wasn’t created in a lab, but if I was, there must’ve been a bug in the system which caused me to malfunction somewhere between the years of 2013-16.”

Joking aside, Cyrus then detailed a much earlier era in her storied life when she moved from Nashville to Los Angeles to start her career. After sharing how she got the part of Hannah Montana, she recalled her first performance as the fictional star, which took place for free at the Glendale Galleria. “The first song I opened with was titled ‘This Is The Life,’” she said. “Which of course, no one knew. Because in reality I was a little girl in a blonde wig at the mall with a big dream. But in my heart, I was Hannah Montana. And I was so proud to be her.”

“A little bit of everything has changed since that day, but at the same time, nothing has changed at all. I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana. Because she made Miley in so many ways. This award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her amazing, loyal fans and to everyone who has made my dream a reality. To quote the legend herself: ‘This is the life.’”

If you follow both pop music and politics, you may have to choose which you’re going to watch live on Tuesday, Sept. 10 – the first presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and VP Kamala Harris or the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
Trump agreed to the debate on Thursday (Aug. 8), after initially saying he wouldn’t appear. In response, Harris said on X, formerly Twitter: “I hear that Donald Trump has finally committed to debating me on September 10. I look forward to it.”

The Sept. 10 debate will air on ABC. David Muir, anchor of World News Tonight, and Linsey Davis, anchor of the Sunday edition of that broadcast, will moderate the session. That’s the same date that Trump and President Joe Biden had agreed to their second and final debate, before Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.

The first debate of the 2024 general election between Trump and Biden was held on June 27. Biden’s performance was so shaky that even friends and allies urged him to bow out of the race. Less than one month later, on July 21, he announced that he wouldn’t run again and endorsed Harris for the nomination.

There may or may not be additional debates between Trump and Harris. Fox News has proposed a debate on Sept. 4, and NBC News is hoping to host one on Sept. 25. During an appearance in Michigan, Harris said she was “happy to have that conversation” about additional debate(s).

MTV announced Sept. 10 as the date of the 2024 VMAs way back on April 24 – but apparently “dibs” don’t count for much in the high-stakes world of presidential politics.

The VMAs will air from UBS Arena in New York at 8 p.m. ET/PT. (So, depending on what time zone you live in, you may be able to watch both live.) The VMAs will be held just four days shy of the 40th anniversary of the inaugural VMAs at Radio City Music Hall. (That show aired three full weeks before the first debate between President Reagan and former vp Walter Mondale, so there was no conflict.)

This is the second time this summer that a newsworthy event in presidential politics has collided with an awards show. An attempt on Trump’s life occurred on July 13, less than two hours before the Kids’ Choice Awards was scheduled to get underway in Santa Monica, Calif. The awards went on as scheduled, with no mention of the stunning event.
