Taylor Swift, BTS, Lizzo, Selena Gomez and actress Elizabeth Olsen each won multiple awards at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, which were presented Tuesday (Dec. 6) at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Kenan Thompson hosted the show, which aired on both NBC and E!
Swift won three awards – the female artist of 2022, the music video of 2022 (“Anti-Hero”) and the album of 2022 (Midnights, which has topped the Billboard 200 in five of its first six weeks).
BTS won two awards – the group of 2022 and the concert tour of 2022. In addition, BTS’ Jung Kook won the collaboration song of 2022 for his featured role on Charlie Puth’s “Left and Right.” That spunky collab debuted and peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July.
Lizzo won the song of 2022 for “About Damn Time,” as well as a previously announced honorary award, the People’s Champion award. “About Damn Time,” which topped the Hot 100 for two weeks in July and August, is nominated for both record and song of the year at the upcoming Grammy Awards.
Gomez won the comedy TV star of 2022 for her role in Only Murders in the Building and the social celebrity of 2022.
Olsen, the star of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, won the female movie star of 2022 and the action movie star of 2022.
Stranger Things was also a double winner. It was named the [TV] show of 2022 and also the sci-fi/fantasy show of 2022. Despite winning the top movie award – the movie of 2022 – Doctor Strange…, strangely, did not win as the action movie of 2022; that award went to Top Gun: Maverick.
There were some surprises in the music categories. Becky G beat Bad Bunny for the Latin artist of 2022. Carrie Underwood beat both Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen for the country artist of 2022. (That one probably shouldn’t rate as a surprise, given Underwood’s massive popularity.)
The Kelly Clarkson Show won as the daytime talk show of 2022 to the surprise of absolutely no one.
Shania Twain won a special award, the Music Icon award. She also performed a medley of her greatest hits as well as her new single “Waking Up Dreaming.”
Lauren Spencer-Smith, who was nominated as the new artist of 2022, but lost to Latto, performed her hit song “Fingers Crossed.”
Ryan Reynolds received the third previously-announced special award, the People’s Icon award.

Shania Twain proved just what makes her a Music Icon when she accepted that prize and performed a medley of her hits at Tuesday’s (Dec. 6) People’s Choice Awards.
One of the highlights of her performance — which included her breakthrough 1995 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Any Man of Mine,” her crossover late-’90s pop smashes “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” and her latest single “Waking Up Dreaming” — is when the pink-haired singer swapped the famous spoken-word “Brad Pitt” line from “Impress” for a fellow Canadian star.
“OK, so you’re Ryan Reynolds!” she said sassily as the cameras cut to the surprised Deadpool star, who was on hand to accept the People’s Icon award later in the evening. Reynolds mouthed, “Oh my God, me?!” from the audience.
In addition to the performance, Twain also gave a heartfelt acceptance speech as she accepted the Music Icon award from her friend, actor Billy Porter.
“Am I dreaming? I really am, I think,” she said to start. “Thank you so much for presenting me with this award and for highlighting my work as having a significant impact. I’m not sure if that’s the right thing to say, but that’s always my wish: to inspire people with my music. I always miss my mother right now at these moments in life. She would have loved watching her little girl living this moment right now. But my fans, my friends, my team – you are the ones who really fill that space. Not my mother’s space, but you’re here with me and you’re celebrating, we’re celebrating together, and you’ve made me feel loved and special my whole working life. And I will always be grateful for that, thank you.
“From a very young age, I turned to songwriting as a form of escapism,” she added. “This is my go-to place. It never occurred to me how powerful lyrics can become when you’re able to record them and share them with the whole world. It’s a great honor to be respected as a songwriter. But the biggest honor for me is knowing people have found strength and inspiration in what i have to sing, in my work. So thank you, I love you for that.”
She also highlighted her role as a fashion icon, noting that early in her career, she was just piecing outfits together with what she had. “I just went to my closet and picked out whatever I had, or went to a department store and picked out the budget things, because I didn’t have a big budget. With that, a sharp pair of scissors and a big imagination, i just cut and pulled and chopped … and hoped for the best.”
Twain ended the speech with some words of inspiration for her young fans. “I just want to say: Giddy-up, kids. Embrace your individuality and your crazy ideas. Just be brave. Let’s remember, there is power in numbers, we are in this together, love is love, and when a door slams in your face, take a freaking run and leap at your door and kick it down! You won’t regret it.
“All I have to say is: Be the queen of you,” she concluded, tipping a cowgirl hat to her upcoming sixth studio album, Queen of Me, due Feb. 3, 2023.
The inaugural nominees in the Grammys’ new songwriter of the year, non-classical category range from a five-time Grammy winner, The-Dream, to a first-time nominee, Tobias Jesso Jr.
The-Dream is the only nominee in this category who has previously won a Grammy. His awards include song of the year and best R&B song for co-writing Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” The-Dream received six more nominations this year, including five that were expressly for his work on Beyoncé’s latest album, Renaissance.
Like The-Dream, Nija Charles is nominated for album of the year as a songwriter on Renaissance. Amy Allen and Jesso both have double album of the year nominations. Allen is nominated as a songwriter on Harry Styles’ Harry’s House and Lizzo’s Special. Jesso is nominated as a songwriter on Harry’s House and Adele’s 30.
The fifth nominee in the category, Laura Veltz, has no other nominations this year, though she was nominated for best country song in each of the three previous years.
Here are excerpts from the Recording Academy’s official description of the category, taken from the rules and guidelines handbook for the 65th annual Grammy Awards: “This category recognizes the written excellence, profession and art of songwriting for non-performing and non-producing songwriters … Songwriters must have written a minimum of five songs in which they are credited ‘solely’ as a songwriter or co-writer. Songs in which the songwriter was also credited as a primary or featured artist, producer or [in] any other supporting role do not qualify to achieve a minimum song threshold for consideration. Songwriters may supplement their core five song submission with up to four more songs … Songs from albums released in a previous year are not eligible, even if released as a single or added to a new album released during the current eligibility year. Re-released, covered, remixed, reissued, and historical recordings of songs are not eligible.
The addition of this new category coincides with the launch of the Recording Academy’s Songwriters & Composers Wing. Last week, we took a closer look at the nominees for producer of the year, non-classical. Now, let’s look at the nominees for songwriter of the year, non-classical.
The 54th NAACP Image Awards will broadcast live on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at 8 p.m. (live ET/PT on delay) on BET from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif. Nominees will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023. Online voting opens on that date and extends through Friday, Feb. 10, 2023.
This will mark the first in-person Image Awards since the show was hosted in February 2020, also at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The host has not been announced. Black-ish star Anthony Anderson hosted the last nine NAACP Image Awards, but several previous hosts or co-hosts came from the world of music, including Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross and LL Cool J.
Jennifer Hudson was named entertainer of the year at last year’s show. Jazmine Sullivan and Anthony Hamilton won outstanding female and male artist, respectively. Sullivan’s Heaux Tales took outstanding album. Saweetie took outstanding new artist.
The 54th NAACP Image Awards will include three new categories within the motion picture, television + streaming categories — outstanding hairstyling, outstanding make-up and outstanding costume design.
“Throughout the past year, we’ve witnessed Black artists showcasing our history and uplifting values of progressive change, while redefining genres and bringing our stories to the forefront of entertainment in so many innovative ways,” Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, said in a statement. “Black voices are necessary to continually inspire audiences around the world. We’re proud to once again provide a platform that both elevates and celebrates these voices through the 54th NAACP Image Awards.”
“BET is extremely proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the NAACP and magnify their endeavors to honor the incredible contributions made by the Black community,” added BET president and CEO Scott Mills. “We’re looking forward to celebrating Black excellence at next year’s Image Awards on all of our platforms, honoring those who help tell our diverse stories in powerful ways.”
Lauren Spencer-Smith will perform her hit “Fingers Crossed” on the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, which are set to air on both NBC and E! on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The song reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January.
Shania Twain, this year’s Music Icon Award recipient, will also take the stage at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., to perform a medley of her hits as well as her new single “Waking Up Dreaming.” The new song is from her upcoming sixth studio album, Queen of Me.
It’s doubtless just a coincidence, but both singers are Canadian, as is actor and budding director Ryan Reynolds, who will receive the People’s Icon Award. (Spencer-Smith was born in England, but moved to Canada when she was 3.)
Lizzo is set to receive the People’s Champion Award but is not slated to perform.
Kenan Thompson will host the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Amy Poehler, Billy Porter, David Spade, Ana Gasteyer and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez are among the presenters.
“Live From E!: The 2022 People’s Choice Awards” will air at 7 p.m. ET/PT on E!. Both shows are produced by Den of Thieves, with executive producers Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski.

Jack Antonoff, who won producer of the year, non-classical at the Grammy Awards in April, is back to defend his title. If he wins again at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 5, he’ll become the first person to win back-to-back awards in that category since Greg Kurstin in 2017-18.
He is competing with another past winner in the category, Dan Auerbach (who won in 2013), and three producers who are looking for their first wins in the category: Boi-1da, Dahi and D’Mile. Boi-1da has been nominated in this category before, but these are first nods in the category for Dahi and D’Mile.
Boi-1da has two nominations for album of the year (Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers). Dahi is also nominated for album of the year for his work on Lamar’s album. D’Mile is nominated in that category for his work on the deluxe edition of Mary J. Blige’s Good Morning Gorgeous.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Antonoff has been in the running in this category. He’s the first producer or producing team to receive four consecutive nods in this category since Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis landed six straight nods (2000-05).
Thom Bell, one of the architects of the Philadelphia soul sound, was the first winner in this category, in 1975. Babyface is the only four-time winner in the category’s history. He won once with his partner L.A. Reid and three times on his own. David Foster, Quincy Jones and Pharrell Williams are three-time category champs.
Let’s take a closer look at this year’s nominees for producer of the year, non-classical.
Harry Styles has a new award to add to his collection of Grammy, VMA, AMA and Billboard Music trophies. On Thursday (Dec. 1), PETA announced that the 28-year-old pop star is one of this year’s winners of the animal rights organization’s Libby Awards after he was captured on video declining a fan’s offering of chicken nuggets.
According to a release, the Libby Awards — a play on the word “liberation” — are given out by PETA’s youth division, and recognize individuals, brands and products that “go above and beyond for animals.” Styles was specifically honored with the Best Viral Moment for Animals award, beating out other nominees Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian, Bella Hadid and Jimmy Fallon.
The now award-winning moment in question went down back in August, when Styles was pelted with chicken nuggets while performing a concert at Madison Square Garden. When fans started chanting “Eat it! Eat it!” Styles told his audience: “I don’t eat chicken. Sorry. I don’t eat meat.”
“First of all, this is cold,” he continued in the moment, at a loss for words. “Would you like it back? Don’t eat it!”
According to PETA, anyone who follows Styles’ lead in going for a meat-free diet will “save the lives of nearly 200 animals per year.”
Other Libby winners this year include Daisy Ridley, who sent a letter to the University of Massachusetts–Amherst calling for an end to experiments conducted on marmosets named after Star Wars characters, and Nicola Peltz Beckham, who advocated for animal adoption on Instagram.
“These compassionate celebrities prove that helping animals can be as simple as leaving chickens off their plates, speaking out against cruel experimentation, or adopting from shelters,” said PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange in a statement. “It’s a ‘Sign of the Times’ that these entertainers and influencers are advocating for animals, and PETA is honoring Harry, Daisy, and Nicola for leading by example.”

The Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards revealed a slate of changes on today (Dec. 1), including the expansion of the number of final-round nominees in the coveted entertainer of the year category from five to seven final nominees.
The 58th annual ACM Awards, produced by dick clark productions, will livestream exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video on May 11, 2023, live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
“The 58th ACM Awards cycle brings thoughtful and well-considered changes to numerous awards categories to better match the landscape of our industry’s music, visual content, and radio broadcasts and, specifically, how they have changed and grown with the times,” Kelly Rich, chair of the ACM Awards, voting, and membership committee, said in a statement.
Additional new category changes are as follows:
Songwriter of the year
The category will split into two categories: songwriter of the year and artist-songwriter of the year.
The ACM songwriter of the year award is presented to an individual known predominately as a songwriter and does not serve as the primary artist on any songs in the top 20 Billboard’s Hot Country Songs or Mediabase Country charts during the eligibility period. Nominees will be selected by a professional panel of judges composed of songwriters, publishers, producers, and performing rights organization (PRO) representatives. The panel will submit five nominees, which will be placed on the final ballot once approved by the ACM board of directors.
The ACM artist-songwriter of the year award is presented to an individual known both as an artist and a songwriter who was the predominate recording artist on at least one song that charted in the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs or Mediabase Country charts during the eligibility period. Nominees will be selected by the same professional panel of judges as songwriter of the year, who will submit five nominees.
Album of the year
The criteria for the ACM Awards album of the year category will increase the required amount of previously unreleased content from 51% to 75%, while the release window has been updated to better accommodate gradual release schedules.
An album is defined as a unified, released body of work with a minimum of either seven (7) full-length musical works and/or thirty (30) minutes in length. An album is considered released on the first available date that the material can be purchased or streamed by a consumer in its entirety. If the album was released during the two prior eligibility periods but achieved its highest charting position on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart during the eligibility period, it is eligible unless it has appeared on a final ACM ballot in this category.
“Best Of,” “Greatest Hits,” and re-recordings of previously released albums are ineligible. Only the standard edition of an album may be submitted for eligibility. Once an album is nominated in the final round, it may not be nominated in alternate configurations for future voting.
Video of the year
The video of the year category has been expanded into visual media of the year, to include additional formats of visual content.
Radio Awards
There are also shifts in the criteria for the ACM’s radio award for national personality of the year, which has been updated to require that show submissions are distributed across all U.S. continental time zones. This shift will impact the national weekly on-air personality of the year, as well as the national daily on-air personality of the year.
