Taylor Swift Reveals ‘Self-Loathing’ & ‘Fantasizing About Revenge’ Inspired ‘Midnights’

As if Swifties weren’t excited enough for the Friday (Oct. 21) release of Taylor Swift‘s Midnights, the pop star has now shared two enticing new details about what inspired her highly anticipated new album.

In recent videos shared via the Spotify pre-save page for Midnights, Swift revealed that she’d be unveiling five things “that kept me up at night and helped inspire the Midnights album.” As of Tuesday (Oct. 18), two of the five have gone live.

“The first thing that kept me up at night that helped inspired the Midnights album is …,” the singer-songwriter teases in the video. “Self-loathing.”

At that, she gives a small smile and shrugs her shoulders ever so slightly.

In the next video, Swift gets just a little bit shady. “The second thing that kept me up at night: fantasizing about revenge,” she says, throwing a mischievous side-eye glance to her left.

The revealing new videos come as part of a partnership with Spotify that’s also spawned in a couple digital billboards that have turned up in New York City and London, previewing snippets of lyrics on Midnights. A mammoth billboard in Times Square displayed the lyric “I should not be left to my own devices” on Oct. 17, and another in London read “I polish up real nice.” More lyrics are expected to be revealed in the coming days.

The 11-time Grammy winner’s Spotify Easter eggs come on the heels of the announcement that “Anti-Hero,” track three on Midnights would be getting a music video released at 8 a.m. Friday, hours after the full album drops. Kicking off with an Oct. 20 album teaser on Thursday Night Football, Swift’s album release week also includes a “special very chaotic surprise” on release day, appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (Oct. 24) and The Graham Norton Show (Oct. 28), and the Tuesday (Oct. 25) release of a second unidentified music video.

Nas & Hit-Boy Reveal ‘King’s Disease 3’ Release Date & Cover Art

Nas and Hit-Boy are going for the three-peat. The Grammy Award-winning duo officially announced plans for King’s Disease 3 on Tuesday (October 18).

The legendary Queensbridge MC and West Coast beat maestro posted the gold-plated cover art of the LP on social media, along with its November 11 release date.

“KDIII 11-11 @Nas,” Hit-Boy wrote on Instagram, while Nas echoed the release date on his own Instagram page.

Nas sparked anticipation for King’s Disease 3 last December when he confirmed that the album was on the way on “Ugly,” from his and Hit-Boy’s surprise joint project Magic.

“I’m on offense every day until I see the love / ‘KD3’ on the way, this just to feed the buzz,” he rapped.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden earlier that year, Nas spoke about his collaborative relationship with Hit-Boy, who he referred to as the Quincy Jones to his Michael Jackson.

“He’s like my Quincy [Jones], you know what I mean?” he said. “So I feel like the next thing I do, if I was to work with Hit-Boy on the next thing I do, I think that we might do something that is going to be magical.”

Nas ‘King’s Disease II’ Nabs Top 3 Debut On Billboard 200 Chart

King’s Disease earned Nas his first Grammy Award victory at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards when the LP beat out Jay Electronica’s A Written Testimony, Freddie Gibbs and Alchemist’s Alfredo, D Smoke’s Black Habits and Royce Da 5’9’s The Allegory for Best Rap Album honors.

The 2020 project debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with roughly 47,000 total album-equivalent units sold in its first week. Despite the Top 5 debut, only one single from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100 — “Spicy” with Fivio and Ferg, which squeezed in at No. 96.

Nas just got off the road after finishing up his N.Y. State of Mind Tour with the Wu-Tang Clan. On the music side, he provided an assist on YG’s I Got Issues track “No Weapon.”

JAY-Z Sues D’USSÉ Partner Bacardi Over Financial Transparency Concerns

JAY-Z has filed a lawsuit against Bacardi, his partner in the cognac brand D’USSÉ, over concerns about financial transparency.

According to TMZ, Hov’s SC Liquor company has demanded Bacardi open up its books and reveal the “location of all warehouses storing D’USSÉ barrels, bottles and accessories.”

It’s unclear why Hov has filed the lawsuit against Bacardi, but there seems to be a lack of the trust between the two parties as SC Liquor is looking to “monitor the conduct of [Bacardi’s] business to protect SC’s rights.”

JAY-Z and Bacardi have been in business together since 2011 and share a 50/50 partnership in D’USSÉ. The Roc Nation boss famously drank the cognac out of a Grammy in 2013 after winning two awards.

D’USSÉ is worth well over $100 million and the brand even auctioned off a rare bottle autographed by JAY-Z that fetched over $50,000 last year.

Proceeds of the sale of Hov’s rare D’USSÉ bottle went to The Shawn Carter Foundation, benefitting young professionals and recent college graduates looking to launch their own businesses.

Kanye West Gives Update On ‘Watch The Throne 2’ With JAY-Z

The Brooklyn mogul is a major player in the spirits industry as he also owns a 50-percent stake of the premium champagne brand, Armand de Brignac. He sold the other 50-percent share, which he previously owned, to LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton last February, pocketing $300 million in the process.

JAY-Z’s latest investment saw his venture capital firm, Marcy Venture Partners, put $16.5 million behind Stellar Pizza, a robot-powered pizza truck company based in Los Angeles.

Jin Unveils Details for Solo Single ‘The Astronaut’ Ahead of Military Service

Get ready, ARMY! Jin announced the release date for his new solo single, titled “The Astronaut,” on Tuesday morning (Oct. 18).

The track is set to arrive from the BTS singer at the end of this month, on Oct. 28, via BigHit Music. According to BigHit’s press release, the song is “meant to be a gift for the fans.”

The K-pop idol also shared the very first logo trailer for the song, which features a tiny astronaut exiting a massive, futuristic space station as he floats high above the earth. From there, he travels through a meteor shower, past moons and planets, satellites and asteroid fields before arriving at an otherworldly source of light that envelops him completely as the song’s official logo takes over the screen.

Additionally, BigHit Music laid out the entire rollout schedule leading up to the song’s premiere for excited fans, with the single’s official poster being unveiled Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 11 a.m. ET. Three different concept photos will arrive next, on Oct. 23, 24 and 25, before Jin drops the official music video teaser on Oct. 26.

“The Astronaut” announcement comes just one day after news broke that all seven members of the K-pop boy band will face the mandate to serve in South Korea’s military for at least 18 months.

“Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October,” the label had said in a statement. “He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government. Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans.” (As such, BTS won’t be expected to reconvene with all seven members until around 2025.)

Kanye West Gets Into Heated Argument With Chris Cuomo Over Anti-Semitism, Buying Parler & Kim Kardashian: Watch

Kanye West continued his streak of spouting anti-Semitic comments in a heated argument with Chris Cuomo Monday (Oct. 17) on Cuomo’s self-titled new show on NewsNation. Before angrily hanging up on the show’s host, the rapper — who now goes by Ye — gave an update on his plans to buy the conservative social media platform Parler, spoke about ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s “left agenda” politics, and explained how he justifies his ongoing campaign of hate speech against Jewish people in a 20-minute virtual appearance on Cuomo.

Cuomo caught up with Ye in a video call as the Yeezy designer was riding in a car. When asked if he was on his way to meet with former president Donald Trump, Ye said he was actually going to negotiate with the CEO of Parler — a social media hub generally used by right-wing political thinkers that Ye offered to purchase earlier this week following his suspension from Instagram and Twitter.

“Why would I remain in a place where I’m just tolerated?” he said of his desire to buy Parler. “Why not go to a place where I’m celebrated? I bring a lot of attention to these platforms, to Instagram and Twitter and … they shadow ban you.”

This led into a conversation about the real reason Ye was booted from the two platforms: for posting hostile remarks aimed at the Jewish community, including one in which he said he would go “death con 3 on Jewish people.” In the days leading up to his Cuomo appearance, Ye doubled down on his anti-Semitic comments on Tucker Carlson‘s Fox News Show as well as Drink Champs (the latter show’s host, N.O.R.E, later said he regretted having Ye on as a guest).

On Cuomo, Ye once again asserted his stance by claiming that Jewish people make up a majority of music executives and yield an agenda exercised by taking control of musicians such as himself. “This is not hate speech,” he insisted to Cuomo. “This is the truth. If you say anything out of the line with the agenda, then your career could be over.”

“There’s so many Black musicians signed to Jewish record labels and those Jewish record labels take ownership … of the culture itself,” he added. “It’s like a modern day slavery, and I’m calling it out. That’s what ‘death con 3’ meant. It didn’t mean I wished any harm on my fellow Jewish people.”

Cuomo didn’t let Ye’s comments just stand, especially the musician’s mention of a “Jewish underground media mafia.” “Look, there is no Jewish media, cabal, mafia. That is a figment of either your imagination or a projection of a prejudice,” Cuomo shot back. “You may have had bad business dealings with people — it’s about those people. It’s not about their religion or faith. And I know that you’re intelligent and understand that when you target people because of their faith, other people may do so the same.”

Ye also looped in his former in-laws, saying that his political differences with Kardashian caused their divorce. “My family was torn apart off of my political opinion because of my ex-wife’s attachment to the Clinton administration,” he told an astonished Cuomo, also claiming that former pals John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen are also part of the “left agenda.”

“They were getting my ex-wife to push the vaccination — I didn’t realize how attached [the Kardashians] were to the left agenda when I was there.”

Snoop Dogg & DJ Drama Unveil ‘I Still Got It’ Mixtape Cover Art

Snoop Dogg is next in line to collaborate with DJ Drama after announcing a new Gangsta Grillz mixtape called I Still Got It.

Tha Doggfather and Drama gave fans their first glimpse of the upcoming project on Monday (October 17) by sharing the project’s official cover art on their respective Instagram pages.

The blue film reel-inspired artwork features various photos of Snoop, along with other West Coast imagery such as palm trees and lowriders.

“C. Day music for the fans. I. Still got it. @djdrama @deathrowrecords 10/20/22,” Snoop wrote on Instagram, referencing the mixtape’s imminent October 20 release.

I Still Got It was first announced in September after Snoop Dogg and DJ Drama hopped on a FaceTime call together and teased fans with a screenshot of their conversation on Instagram.

The mixtape will mark Drama’s sixth Gangsta Grillz release this year following the likes of Jim Jones’ We Set the Trends, Dreamville’s D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape and Symba’s Results Take Time.

The veteran DJ, who won his first Grammy earlier this year thanks to Tyler, The Creator’s Gangsta Grillz-inspired Call Me If You Get Lost, is also gearing up to release Snofall with longtime collaborator Jeezy on Friday (October 21).

As for Snoop Dogg, it will serve as his second Gangsta Grillz entry after dropping The City is in Good Hands back in 2008. The two also worked together on Snoop’s That’s My Work mixtape series.

Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre All Smiles In Studio As New Music Takes Shape

I Still Got It isn’t the only project the D-O-Double-G is working on. During an appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s Know Mercy podcast earlier this month, the West Coast legend revealed he’s making a new album with Dr. Dre called Missionary.

The project is due to be finished in November, although it’s unclear when it will be released exactly. As for the meaning behind the title, Snoop told Smith: “The first album was Doggystyle,” prompting a roar of laughter from the sports personality.

Why Jann Wenner Doesn’t Think Springsteen’s Lawyer Is Rock Hall Worthy

An inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is protesting one of the Hall’s upcoming inductions. Complicating matters is that the protest comes from Jann S. Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone and a co-founder and former chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, who was himself inducted into the institution as a non-performer in 2004, when he was a recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

Wenner says that entertainment attorney Allen Grubman, who is also a founding board member and set to receive the Ertegun award next month, does not meet the Hall’s criteria for the honor. “Allen Grubman has made no contribution of any kind, by any definition, to the creative development or the history of rock & roll,” says Wenner. “He has been chosen because of his clout as entertainment super lawyer. This decision is about money and bending to the ego of a music business power broker.”

Grubman — long one of the most powerful attorneys in the music industry — counts Bruce Springsteen, Lizzo, The Weeknd, Lil Nas X, J Balvin, U2, Mariah Carey, the David Bowie estate, Lady Gaga and Madonna among the clients of his firm, Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, as well as Spotify, Live Nation, and the major record companies and music publishers. He will be one three recipients of the Ertegun award at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Nov. 5 in Los Angeles along with Interscope Records co-founder/CEO Jimmy Iovine and Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson, who will be inducted posthumously.

Grubman was nominated by Jon Landau, who, in addition to being a founding board member of the hall of fame and the head of its nominating committee, is the manager of Springsteen, a client of Grubman’s firm. Landau — who began his career as a rock critic — and Wenner have been friends and allies since the beginnings of Rolling Stone, as Wenner details in his recent memoir, Like a Rolling Stone. Wenner also takes aim at Grubman in his book in passing, saying the lawyer “didn’t know Jerry Lee Lewis from Jerry Lewis.”

“Jon remains one of my oldest and best friends,” Wenner told Billboard. “But we completely disagree about this. We have different agendas. Mine is the integrity of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jon has got a business relationship to maintain.” And that relationship, he adds, constitutes a “conflict of interest” when it comes to Landau’s endorsement of Grubman.

The Rolling Stone founder decided to go public with his dissatisfaction after Billboard contacted him about a passage in his memoir detailing his decision to retire as chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation at the beginning of 2020 (both Billboard and Rolling Stone are owned by Penske Media Corp.; Wenner no longer has a full-time role with the magazine he founded). “My only worry was the pressure to compromise the integrity of the nominating and voting. I should have known better,” wrote Wenner, who remains a board member. “After I resigned, I was told that music business power-brokers on the board were going to be inducted. These individuals had made not one iota of difference to the history, present or future of the creation of music, which was the explicit criterion. But they had accumulated influence and wealth. It was an inside job.”

Wenner doesn’t name anyone in his book, but in May, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced that Grubman, who is a founder and board member, would receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which, according to the organization’s website, is given to “non-performing industry professionals who, through their dedicated belief and support of artists and their music, have had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock & roll and music that has impacted youth culture.”

When Billboard contacted Wenner about the passage, he confirmed that he was referring to Grubman.

This year’s Ahmet Ertegun Award inductees were chosen for the first time by a committee formed by the hall of fame foundation’s current chairman, iHeartMedia president of entertainment enterprises John Sykes. He is a committee member along with Landau (who also heads the hall’s nominating committee); Jody Gerson, the chairman/CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group; Jon Platt, chairman/CEO, Sony Music Publishing; Rob Light, the head of CAA’s music department; and Joel Peresman, president/CEO of the foundation. A hall of fame insider says that in past years the Ertegun inductees were chosen via a “consensus decision” that included Wenner, Landau, and musicians Paul Shaffer and Robbie Robertson. The source adds that the creation of a formal committee had been Wenner’s suggestion, although Wenner had wanted more people outside of the industry, such as music historians and artists.

According to one source familiar with the situation, “Wenner presented his case against Allen to the full committee” in a “a lively 20-minute debate” during which all of the committee members got to express their views. Multiple sources confirm that the subsequent vote was five-to-one in favor of Grubman’s induction with Wenner casting the sole dissenting vote. (The committee voted unanimously to induct Iovine and Robinson.)

Wenner’s account of the proceedings is significantly different. He says that the discussion and vote regarding Grubman’s induction “was no more than a 45-minute phone call, and prior to that call, I was told by Jon that my dissent would be useless. The issue was already settled,” he says.

In response, the source says, “It is generally routine for committee members to discuss how they would likely vote on different issues before a meeting and how an upcoming vote will likely go.”

Another source familiar with the committee’s voting process says Grubman’s induction is justified because he is “one of the all-time great dealmakers, but his impact and those of the next generation of agents and lawyers who followed him, is not always appreciated.” The source contends that Grubman’s decades of “staunch advocacy and success in negotiating groundbreaking deals for these artists changed the balance of power in the industry,” providing the artists he has represented “the security and stability that allowed them to focus on their craft.”

Wenner says the argument that Grubman “is responsible for historic changes in recording artists’ contractual relationships with record companies is ex-post facto hogwash. This is an artful but disingenuous fig leaf to cover the absence of a valid reason. It is putting lipstick on a pig.”

Wenner says that inducting Grubman into the hall of fame is the equivalent of giving former CAA founder and Disney studios chief Michael Ovitz an Oscar. “The underlying and inescapable truth is that he has not made one iota of difference then, now or for the future of rock & roll,” he says. “He doesn’t make music. He makes money.”

A statement issued by the foundation did not address Wenner’s allegations directly but instead adopts language the hall of fame’s website uses to describe its criteria for the Ahmet Ertegun award: “The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame relies on a diverse group of expert music professionals and artists to select those who are inducted each year. We welcome this year’s group of very well deserving inductees and congratulate them on their significant influence on the music and artists that have moved youth culture.” Grubman, Landau, and spokespersons for Light and Platt declined to comment. Sykes, Peresman and Gerson did not respond to requests for comment.

But one source with ties to the organization says, “This is just Jann being Jann. After all of his great contributions, it’s sad that he’s making these unnecessary personal attacks to bring attention to himself.”

That is a personal attack,” says Wenner. “Why can’t they defend themselves?”

‘The Voice’s Cara Brindisi & Jay Allen Armor Up in ‘Leather & Lace’ for Battle Round: Watch

The Voice‘s season 22 lineup continues to be whittled down during the Battle Rounds, which saw contestants Cara Brindisi and Jay Allen going head to head on Monday night’s (Oct. 17) episode for a spot on coach Gwen Stefani‘s team. The two performed a stunning duet of Stevie Nicks and Don Henley‘s 1981 track, “Leather and Lace.”

After Brindisi and Allen took turns singing pairs of lines from the song — which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 — the duo employed a fitting country twang for the track that soared as the chorus rolled around.

“Lovers forever, face to face/ My city, your mountains/ Stay with me, stay/ I need you to love me, I need you today/ Give to me your leather/ Take from me my lace,” the pair harmonized, with Brindisi going for a softer tone and Allen opting for a stronger belt.

John Legend started off the commentary. “Cara, you were like so perfect. I love when you were whispering. I love when you were belted a little bit more and it just relaxed me,” he said. “Jay, the power of your voice, the raspiness … it was just a little more compelling to me, so I pick Jay.”

Blake Shelton also agreed with Legend’s reasoning, and brought in his country expertise into this critique. “I feel like Jay has the more Stevie Nicks approach to his vocal, and you definitely stepped into that role. And man, it sounded good,” he said, adding that he picked Jay as the winner of the battle.

Stefani then stepped up to the plate to give a decision on who to keep for her team. “One of the things that Jay needed to work on, his voice is so powerful that it was coming out too much, and I’m so proud of you because you took the advice and went to another level. Cara, your voice is so soothing and there’s a confidence that has to come with that,” she told the pair and noted that her decision was a difficult one before ultimately picking Brindisi to keep.

After extending a gracious thank you to the coaches, Allen headed off stage thinking he was headed back to Nashville, but was later saved by Stefani in a split-second decision. “Well, honestly that was such a hard one for me and it was so confusing because I knew I wanted to save Jay,” she said, before Shelton slammed down his buzzer and cut in with, “What if somebody wanted to steal Jay?”

Citing his near 10-year stint in Nashville, his love of country music and Shelton’s status in the genre, Allen switched over to the country star’s team.
