Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ Soars to 2 Billion Views on YouTube

Gotye just hit a major milestone: The 42-year-old Belgian musician has now reached 2 billion views on YouTube for his 11-year-old smash-hit music video “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring New Zealand art-pop artist Kimbra.

In the video, Gotye can be seen with Kimbra appearing naked while standing in front of a canvas that gets colored with different shades. The two sing their parts of the breakup song while fading into the wall print. While the video may be a simple concept, the message of the song goes deep and helped define the 2010s music scene.

The video and song from his Making Mirrors project topped the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2012. Fans in the comment section of the video describe Gotye’s new accomplishment as “well deserved.”

During the year of the track’s release, Gotye was already an established artist in Australia. He was gearing up to release Making Mirrors and had dropped the lead single, “Eyes Wide Open.” “Based upon that, I didn’t have any expectations,” Gotye told Billboard in 2019 of the reception to “Eyes.”

Before its official release, the audio of “Somebody That I Used to Know” leaked onto iTunes, with Australia, Belgium and Netherlands starting to play the track. The video arrived, and the rest was history.

“iTunes, YouTube and Facebook — at the different points they were at — all had a pretty big impact on how this song and video were shared initially,” Gotye told Billboard. “To even have a few hundred million views, it was one of the most-watched music videos at that time.”

Diddy Set to Perform at Baby2Baby Gala Honoring Kim Kardashian

Baby2Baby shared the news Thursday (Nov. 10) that Diddy will take the stage at the organization’s upcoming gala honoring Kim Kardashian.

While the Bad Boy Records founder will provide the musical entertainment for the evening, the SKIMS mogul will be presented with this year’s Giving Tree Award by Tyler Perry for her commitment to helping underprivileged children around the world.

Hosted by Mindy Kaling, the Baby2Baby gala will take place Saturday in Los Angeles, with Olivia Wilde, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Zooey Deschanel and Kerry Washington among the night’s other presenters.

The announcement follows Diddy’s headlining-making feud with Kardashian’s ex-husband Kanye West, after the controversial rapper/designer wore a shirt emblazoned with “White Lives Matter” to his Yeezy season 9 show during Paris Fashion Week. (Several models in the show were also fitted with ensembles bearing the contentious phrase, as was conservative firebrand Candace Owens, whom Ye invited to share the stage.)

Last month, West leaked a private text conversation with Diddy, in which the now-estranged pals faced off over the incident. In the weeks since, Ye has created an increasingly troubling spiral of scandal for himself by spouting off antisemitic rhetoric on social media and in the press, resulting in brands including Balenciaga, Adidas and Gap to sever ties with him.

Meanwhile, Diddy recently rang in his 53rd birthday earlier this month, just a few weeks after hosting the REVOLT Summit 2022 in Atlanta featuring Coi Leray, Gucci Mane, Big Freedia and more.

Catch Rina Sawayama in New ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Trailer

John Wick: Chapter 4 is finally heading to theaters in the spring, and Lionsgate dropped the action film’s official trailer on Thursday (Nov. 10).

Besides Keanu Reeves returning as the titular character, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne and Hiroyuki Sanada are also in the cast for the John Wick franchise’s fourth installment.

Additionally, British-Japanese pop star Rina Sawayama appears as a cutthroat fighter in the film. She appears twice in the new trailer, at the 30-second mark and later in an intense fight scene at the two-minute mark.

The official description for the film explains that Reeves’ character “uncovers a path to defeating the High Table, but before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”

Sawayama’s involvement in the film was announced back in 2021. “I’m so glad to have Rina on board to make her feature film debut in John Wick: Chapter 4,” director Chad Stahelski told Deadline at the time. “She’s an incredible talent who’ll bring so much to the film.”

Radio’s Recovery Hits Uncertain Economy — But It’s Not All Doom and Gloom

U.S. radio companies aren’t exactly struggling through post-pandemic recoveries, but economic conditions are preventing a stronger comeback.

The earnings releases of four U.S.-based, publicly traded radio companies – iHeartMedia, Cumulus Media, Audacy and Townsquare Media – reveal an industry in flux. While the music streaming and satellite radio businesses enjoy some security from subscription-based models that can withstand economic upheaval, the radio industry depends on advertising dollars that can fluctuate greatly. Ongoing economic problems caused some advertisers to pull back in the third quarter and cloud radio’s future.

According to Cumulus Media CEO Mary Berner, “starting in late Q2, national advertisers reduced marketing to mitigate the headwinds they face from inflationary pressures, persistent supply chain issues, finance, market turmoil and overall recession risks,” she explained during the company’s Oct. 28 earnings call. Collectively, the macroeconomic pressures resulted in a decline in broadcast revenues of roughly 5% in the third quarter, said Berner, and was the “main driver” in the company’s 2% decline in total revenue to $233.5 million.

iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman lamented during the company’s Nov. 3 earnings call that the business “doesn’t have the robustness that we expected.” Still, iHeartMedia, the country’s largest radio company, landed at the high end of its revenue guidance with total revenue of $989 million, up 7% from the prior-year period. Revenue of its multi-platform group — which includes broadcast radio — was $659.0 million, up 0.1% year-over-year, with the help of political advertising. “This will be the best non-presidential political year that we’ve had,” said president, COO and CFO Rich Bressler

Townsquare Media’s third-quarter revenue of $120.6 million came in at the low end of its guidance range — $120 million to $127 million — and its adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) of $30.9 million hit the midpoint of its guidance range of $30 million to $32 million.

Audacy was hurt by advertisers’ pullback in the third quarter. Revenue dropped 3.8% to $317 million, and radio revenues dropped 6%, due to “a substantial deterioration of market conditions,” president and CEO David Field said on the company’s Tuesday (Nov. 8) earnings call. “This has obviously taken a toll on our EBITDA and [debt] leverage and has raised concerns.”

Digital remains radio companies’ growth engines. S&P Global Market Intelligence forecasts radio digital revenues to climb 4.8% next year. iHeartMedia’s digital audio segment, which includes its podcasting business, grew 23.4% year-over-year to $254 million in the third quarter. That accounted for 26% of the company’s consolidated revenue, up from 12% in the first quarter of 2020. Podcasting revenue alone accounted for $91.3 million, up 42.1% year-over-year. At Cumulus, digital revenue growth of 20% far outstripped overall revenue growth of 5% in the third quarter. Within its digital segment, podcasting revenue grew 27% year-over-year. Townsquare Media’s digital revenue increased 17%, accounting for half of total revenues, and helped the company set records for third-quarter net revenue and adjusted EBITDA.

Radio companies have taken measures to weather financial uncertainty that will extend into 2023. Cost-cutting remains popular after companies sharply reduced expenses in 2020. IHeartMedia saved about $250 million from 2020 to 2021 — a reduction of historical annualized cost base of about 10% — and targeted an additional $75 million of annual savings this year, said Bressler. Cumulus is “on track to be more than $75 million below the 2019 baseline” of fixed costs, said Berner. Audacy added to its cash reserves by selling real estate worth $56 million in the third quarter and has plans for additional sales.

S&P Global Market Intelligence expects radio local spot advertising to improve by 3% and national ad revenues to grow 1.5%, both down significantly from 2022 growth levels. Solomon Partners estimates 0.8% audio ad spending growth in 2023 based on major advertising agency forecasts from Dentsu, GroupM, Zenith and Magna.

Whatever happens in 2023, radio companies are better prepared than they were for the pandemic in 2020. That downturn “was probably the swiftest and worst downturn I’ve ever lived through,” said iHeartMedia’s Pittman. “And even in that year we had positive free cash flow.”

Still, economic pressures have weighed heavily on radio companies’ share prices. Barrington lowered its price target for iHeartMedia shares from $18 to $13 in an investor note issued Monday. iHeartMedia shares fell 15.1% over Tuesday and Wednesday, to $6.61. Year to date, iHeartMedia shares are down 68.6%.

Shares of Cumulus Media rose 8.9% following its third-quarter earnings release on Oct. 28 — although the stock gave back those gains and more over the next week and a half. As of Wednesday, Cumulus shares are down a relatively mild 38.7% year-to-date. Investors pushed up the share price 39.9% on April 14 on news of a takeover bid by a consortium led by radio veteran Jeff Warshaw. Cumulus rejected the offer and instead offered shareholders a $50 million stock repurchase program. In June, Cumulus spent $25 million to purchase 1.7 million shares, or 8.7% of outstanding Class A shares.

Audacy shares fell 6.3% to $0.298 on Wednesday following the company’s third-quarter earnings release, bringing the year-to-date decline to 88.3%. Audacy shares were trading at $0.59 per share on Aug. 1 when the company was notified by the New York Stock Exchange that it was not in compliance with a listing standard that requires a minimum closing price of $1 over 30 consecutive trading days.

Of his choice to cover Presley, Brown said, “We have Christmas music playing at our house all throughout the season, and this year I’m excited that my daughters will get to hear my voice on one of the most timeless classics made famous by the legendary Elvis Presley. I hope my version puts everyone in the holiday spirit.”

Additional artists who are part of this year’s Amazon Music holiday covers include Stormzy, dvsn, Maisie Peters and more. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Drops Trailer for 2022 Induction Ceremony, Featuring Dolly Parton, Eminem, Carly Simon & More

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is gearing up to celebrate its class of 2022 with the public on Nov. 19, and on Thursday (Nov. 10), a trailer for the upcoming special was released.

In the nearly two-minute clip, snippets from the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony earlier this month flash across the screen. Rock hitmakers Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, new wave chart-toppers Duran Duran, hip-hop heavyweight Eminem, synth-pop duo Eurythmics, country legend Dolly Parton, R&B hitmaker Lionel Richie and pop singer-songwriter Carly Simon are all seen accepting their prestigious honor, along with introductions from star-studded attendees. Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis also joined the Rock Hall with the “award for musical excellence.”

“Rock and roll is not a color,” Richie is seen saying in the teaser. “It’s a vibe!”

Artists are eligible for Rock Hall nomination 25 years after their first commercial recording came out. Of this class, Eminem, Duran Duran, Richie, Simon and Parton see induction after appearing on the ballot just once. This is also Eminem’s first year of eligibility; 2022 marked the second nomination for Eurythmics and Benatar.

The 2022 ceremony also marked the first time in the Hall’s 37-year history that six female acts — Benatar, Parton, Simon, Cotten, Robinson and Annie Lennox (who comprised Eurythmics with her partner Dave Stewart) — were inducted in one class.

Watch the trailer below, and be sure to catch the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, streaming November 19 on HBO Max, which you can sign up for here.
