Piers Morgan’s Twitter Account Got Hacked & Posted Derogatory Tweets About Ed Sheeran

It appears Piers Morgan’s social media was hacked on Monday (Dec. 26) to take aim at Ed Sheeran, Queen Elizabeth II and more.

In a series of since-deleted tweets, the hackers referred to the “Shivers” crooner as a “ginger f—er” and blasted the late monarch by tweeting, “f–k the queen” while changing Morgan’s profile pic to a photo of himself laughing with Her Royal Majesty. Another public figure who came under attack was British-American boxer Andrew Tate after the hacked account erroneously claimed he had been killed in Dubai.

“In case you were wondering, @piersmorgan has been hacked,” the official account for Morgan’s talk show, Piers Morgan Uncensored, tweeted the following day. “Any chance of getting him back, @elonmusk?”

As of press time, Morgan’s account had been wiped clean of most of the abusive tweets besides a Bitcoin app scam and a blurry photo of an unnamed young man captioned with more abusive language.

For his part, Sheeran was likely nonplussed by the controversy, particularly considering he doesn’t use Twitter and leaves the app in the hands of his official team as “Ed Sheeran HQ.”

Instead, the singer had plenty to celebrate as of late. Earlier this month, Billboard reported that Sheeran sold more tickets than any other music act in 2022 thanks to the massive success of his ongoing Mathematics Tour. (Over 60 dates across Europe, he moved a grand total of three million tickets.) The trek will head stateside with its giant, rotating stage on May 6 starting at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex.

Check out Morgan’s plea to get his Twitter account back below.

How a YouTube Channel Is Bridging the Physical-Digital Divide in Japan

TOKYO — For non-Japanese music artists, Japan’s decades-long obsession with physical media has meant they must grapple with legacy strategies for getting attention in the world’s second-largest market — such as landing on a major Japanese TV show or getting CDs into a large brick-and-mortar retailer.

Now, new digital opportunities are emerging that could make it easier. A three-year-old YouTube channel, The First Take, is at the forefront of breaking new artists in Japan and nudging a market long allergic to the internet toward digital music consumption. The channel has featured a handful of big Western artists in 2022, including Harry Styleswho appeared in June to sing “Daughters” from this year’s Harry’s House, and Avril Lavigne, who in September offered up a stripped-down version of “Complicated.”

Launched in late 2019, The First Take now boasts more than 7 million subscribers. It landed its first viral videos with five episodes featuring singer-songwriter LiSA, who performed the opening theme to the anime series Demon Slayer. But it was in the early months of the pandemic when the channel — like other digital entertainment in Japan — surged in popularity.

Digital music sales, which have grown for eight straight years in Japan, jumped 13% to 89.54 billion yen ($660.3 million) in 2021 over 2020, while physical music consumption, which has fallen over the past three years, dipped slightly by 0.4% to 193.64 billion yen ($1.43 billion), according to the Recording Industry Association of Japan. (Physical sales still comprised 68.4% of total sales, easily the highest level of any major music market.)

Fresh-faced artists stepping up to the mic on The First Take to show off their skills — such as YoasobiYuuri and DISH//— have gone on to top the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and produced videos with over 100 million views. They’ve done so primarily through digital and streaming channels, reflecting a shift in how listeners receive J-pop domestically.

When the team started work on the channel in 2019, “what we wanted to create was something you couldn’t see on TV, or more detailed than what you would see on a weekly music show,” says channel producer Makoto Uchida. They drew inspiration from NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts series and Germany’s Colors. “We decided to shoot it from the side, rather than the front, so that it felt like you were in the studio, getting a peek of the artist at work.”

They leaned into this sense of intimacy by positioning The First Take as, well, a first take, capturing whatever the artist sings into the microphone, with errors and emotion on full display. Channel director Naoko Furukawa says that early on, driving this point across to participating artists proved most challenging, as many came in assuming they would have the chance to redo performances.

The First Take saw a substantial increase in views, with uploads featuring young creators like DISH// and Yoasobi, who went from fledgling J-pop names to chart toppers, particularly on subscription services such as Spotify.

The First Take is among the first major music efforts in Japan to use streaming data to target the show’s main demographic of 20- and 30-year-olds, and to determine when artists should perform, says team member Kazuto Fushimi

“The data shows that Japanese people listen to music by seasons,” Fushimi says. “I used that to cast songs that would fit well for this project at certain times of the year.”

Even after Japan loosened COVID-19 restrictions later in 2020, The First Take morphed into an internet-era version of weekly TV shows like Music Station, a music program featuring live performances that started airing in Japan in 1986. It has added a news platform, podcast and live concerts, and has also tried to bring in artists from other markets, initially from China and other Southeast Asian countries.

“We used anime and anime songs to get attention from those markets,” says Fushimi. “They weren’t made explicitly for foreign audiences, but we always made sure to put subtitles and other things so that everyone could follow along too.”

K-pop group Stray Kids was the first non-Japanese artist to appear on The First Take, in the spring of 2020. Fushimi says many new viewers came to the clip via Twitter, where fan communities were sharing it and explaining what The First Take was. The Korean act has appeared on the channel two more times since, which has further boosted their video views on YouTube. “The more that they’ve appeared, the more likely they are to appear on the ‘related’ videos list, which leads to more fan engagement,” Fushimi says.

Other K-pop acts have appeared on the channel since — most recently, burgeoning girl group Kep1er — as have acts from other parts of the continent, including a recent turn by Taiwanese artist WeiBird.

The team’s focus didn’t move beyond the region until this past summer when they landed Styles in June and started looking outside Asia to the West. The team put together English-language promotional materials for Twitter, knowing that it would get them new looks from abroad. Fushimi says Styles’ appearance generated the most tweets about any artist on The First Take to date. (The First Take’s producers declined to share how the Styles collaboration specifically came together.)

“Compared with Japanese artists, foreign artists really are quick about recording – they don’t take much time for rehearsals, they just jump right in,” Furukawa says. “Harry Styles only took 10 minutes after he showed up to the studio to do the actual recording.”

Lavigne’s video followed several months later, attracting over 7 million viewers (boosted by a domestic love for her music that has endured for decades), and offering The First Take another opportunity to tip-toe toward Western attention.

“It’s hard to export J-pop to the world,” Fushimi says, “but we want to use The First Take as a bridge to introduce great Japanese artists to the world.”

Bad Bunny Spreads Holiday Joy in Puerto Rico With ‘Bonita Tradición’ Gift Drive

Bad Bunny is ending the year by giving back to his beloved Puerto Rico.

The superstar helped spread holiday joy on the island on Tuesday (Dec. 27) with the “Bonita Tradición” gift drive, which was held at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The nonprofit organization, founded by Billboard’s Top Artist of 2022, handed out 20,000 gifts (sports equipment, instruments, paint materials and more) to the children who attended the drive.

The event also includes stations serving traditional food and drinks, as well as live music and an opportunity to get a picture with Los Reyes Magos and Bad Bunny himself. “We want to close the year in the best way, bringing a bit of joy, hope, and love to the children with an event that reflects the best of this time with a very special emphasis on the traditions of our island,” José “Che Juan” Torres, director of the Good Bunny Foundation, previously said in a press statement.

Recently, Bunny — who was Spotify’s most streamed artist globally for a third consecutive year — released his new track, “Gato de Noche,” in collaboration with Ñengo Flow. “This is to close the year,” he said on TikTok just hours before blessing fans with the surprise song on Dec. 22.

“With the real beast,” the Puerto Rican act said of Ñengo when he revealed the collab on his Instagram Stories. The pair has many collaborative efforts, including “Que Malo” and “Safaera” (also featuring Jowell & Randy), with the latter peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart dated April 11, 2020. Both tracks come from Bunny’s YHLQMDLG album.

Jonas Brothers Say Goodbye to 2022 With a Memory-Filled Supercut Video: Watch

The Jonas Brothers took to social media on Monday (Dec. 26) to close out 2022 with a look back at everything they accomplished this year.

“And with that The 2022 season comes to an end,” the band wrote on a video showing a rapid-fire compilation of memories including their halftime show at the Thanksgiving game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, their performance at the Global Citizen Festival in September, a behind-the-scenes look at Joe filming his Bridgerton-themed Tanqueray commercial and more. (Shakira and Liza Koshy also make blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances in a clip taken by Nick on the set of NBC’s Dancing With Myself.)

However, the sibling act is also looking ahead to a packed year ahead, captioning the post, “Already can’t wait to see our 2023 recap! Thank you for all the love this year. Looking forward to making lots of new memories with you all next year!!”

After ringing in the new year, the JoBros are set to kick off the AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! concert series on Jan. 7 ahead of the 2023 college football playoffs. Then, in February, they will return to Las Vegas for another three dates of their ongoing residency at the Dolby Live at Park MGM over President’s Day weekend.

And while they have yet to share official details like a title or release date, Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas have hinted repeatedly over the course of 2022 that they’re currently working on a full-length follow-up to 2019’s Happiness Begins, which will be released sometime next year.

CLOSE

Eastbay catalog

Source: Eastbay / Eastbay

Anyone who says they had this on their 2022 bingo card is a liar. On Tuesday (Dec. 27), news broke that longtime athletic footwear and apparel supplier and retailer Eastbay would be closing shop at the end of the month.

For sneakerheads who came up in the 90’s, the Eastbay catalog was akin to the Bible when it came to eyeing the latest offerings from brands like Nike, adidas and Reebok. The direct-mail retailer’s catalogs served like a wishlist of coveted kicks like Air Jordans (any number), Air Max 95’s, Reebok The Questions and many, many more.

The prices on display also gave you a sobering reality when it came down to what you could and couldn’t afford, and strategizing what kicks you’d be able to get your coins together to cop, or beg your parents to buy for you. Now they also serve as a time capsule of what kicks were and weren’t popping during those halcyon days of the sneaker game when you didn’t have to essentially play a version of the lotto to score a pair of coveted sneakers.

But alas, Eastbay will close reportedly at the end of 2022. According to WPR, 2about 10 employees will be laid off. Eastbay was founded in 1980 in Wisconsin, and purchased by Foot Locker in 1997, giving it access to an even wider range of sneakers, apparel and gear. But back in October 2022, Foot Locker notified officials in Wausau, WI that it would be closing Eastbay’s distribution facility in the city by early 2023, citing “opportunities to optimize our U.S. distribution network to serve our customers nationwide more efficiently and effectively.”

Cold game.

Tory Lanez Fans Start Ridiculous Petition Calling Out JAY-Z, Roc Nation & The Protect Black Women Movement

Tory Lanez Fans Blame Roc Nation, JAY-Z & Jury In Petition

Source: Greg Doherty / Getty / Tory Lanez

Tory Lanez spent Christmas in a cell after a jury of his peers found him guilty on all three charges, specifically, shooting Hip-Hop superstar Megan Thee Stallion. Now, his “fans” hope a petition will get him a new trial and keep him out of prison.

Spotted on TMZ, a petition sprouted up on Change.org immediately following the jury delivering the guilty verdict to the Canadian musician.

Tory Lanez’s family, friends, and fans are calling out the music industry, mainly JAY-Z, his company Roc Nation, and the jury, pushing a wild argument that Lanez is some sacrificial lamb for the “protect Black women” movement.

According to this crazy petition that has ridiculously garnered 19K signatures, Tory Lanez’s trial was a “circus of speculation, insufficient evidence, inconsistencies, and drunken memories [that] left us without much moral certainty of any truth.”

Word?

Peep Their Crazy Reasoning

These so-called “fans” of Lanez are zeroing in on the jury, labeling them irresponsible, and they rushed to their decision leading to Lanez being guilty on all three counts, which they feel was unjust.

“This case is also about branding, marketing, label heads and a music industry that pushes narratives based on who they have personally invested millions into. Could Jay-Z or RocNation be involved??,” that’s just one of the most wild claims it pushes.

The petition also takes the racial route stating, “Was this case taken because of a political pressure to fake protect Black women? African-Americans went along with hashtags that didn’t protect anyone & instead caused division between Black women and Black men.”

Lol, whatever.

These latest developments came after Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson (yes, that is his name), exited the court claiming Roc Nation and JAY-Z are somehow behind his son’s legal woes.

Good luck to Sonstar getting his boy Daystar out of this jam.

Finneas Defends Billie Eilish’s Relationship With Jesse Rutherford: ‘She Is a 21-Year-Old Adult’

Finneas is not letting anyone talk down his sister’s relationship online. In the comments of a Monday (Dec. 26) TikTok video, the singer-songwriter defended Billie Eilish from an attack on her relationship with The Neighborhood‘s Jesse Rutherford.

A TikTok user made a snappy video in response to one of Finneas’ recent videos and replied in a stitch video, “Oh yeah? Well, your sister’s dating a 31 year old man and your music is s–tty.” Finneas found the response video and commented, “I want my sister to be happy and safe and she is a 21 year old adult perfectly entitled to make her own life decisions.”

The Grammy-winning producer expressed a similar sentiment regarding Eilish’s relationship with The Neighborhood singer in November, telling E! News, “Listen, as long as she’s happy, I’m happy.”

As for the “Happier Than Ever” singer, she opened up about her relationship with Rutherford in her annual Vanity Fair video interview, published on Nov. 28. “It’s really cool, and I’m really excited and I’m really happy about it,” she said of her romance with the rock star. “I managed to get my life to a point where I not only was known by a person that I thought was the hottest f–king f–ker alive, but pulled his ass! Are you kidding me? Can we just [get a] round of applause for me … thank you, Jesse Rutherford, everyone! I pulled his a–. All me. I did that s–t.”
