The Weeknd Seduces Ultimate ‘Nasty Bad Pop Girl’ Lily-Rose Depp in Trailer For HBO’s ‘The Idol’

The new trailer for HBO’s long-awaited music drama series The Idol promises to dive into the muck of the music industry, and judging from the two-minute sneak peek that dropped on Monday morning (April 17), nobody emerges clean.

The series slated to debut on June 4 on HBO (and later stream on Max), was co-created by co-star The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) along with Euphoria mastermind Sam Levinson — and Reza Fahim — and it takes little time establishing the gritty, sex and excess vibe.

“When was the last truly f–king nasty, nasty bad-pop was one of the show’s stars asks over footage of Depp’s Jocelyn posing for photos while smoking a cigarette in a daringly plunging red gown. It quickly introduces nightclub owner Tedros (Tesfaye), whose dark past seems like a bonus for the pop star whose career was derailed by a mental health crisis on her previous tour.

“You’ve got the best job in the world. You should be having way more fun,” Tedros whispers as he seduces the singer on the dancefloor. “I like you,” she responds while a pounding remix of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” amps up the tension. The teaser then switches to showing cult leader Tedros as a svengali-like figure who unlocks something in Jocelyn by seemingly leaning all-in on her sex appeal.

“I want to be the biggest touring act ever,” she says as those around Jocelyn fear that Tedros is brainwashing his charge while things appear to be spiraling out of control. The filming of the series that was originally ordered by HBO in Nov. 2021 — which also co-stars Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Moses Sumney, Hank Azaria and more — was reportedly plagued by delays, reshoots and rewrites on a production Rolling Stone claimed was described by a source as a “s–tshow.”

Last week, The Weeknd posed a 17-second preview of a song he’s been working on for with producer Mike Dean the show that he captioned “THE IDOL VOL. 1.” The Idol will air on HBO on Sunday nights at 9:30 p.m. beginning June 4 and will screen out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m a huge fan of your TikTok,” Perry was captured telling North in videos posted afterward to Instagram Stories by Kardashian, who was photographed filming the moment proudly from the audience. “I’ve seen a couple of them that you’ve made. You’re a really good dancer, and I thought what better way to be a great dancer [than] to show the world your awesome dance moves?”

North agreed, but on one condition: “Can my friends come out with me?” she asked the “Firework” singer, who deliberated for a moment before giving the OK.

Three more little girls then ran onstage, including Gracie Teefey — North’s pal and frequent TikTok collaborator, and Selena Gomez’s nine-year-old little sister. The besties then joined Perry in getting down to an instrumental of the singer’s 2017 single “Swish Swish,” taking turns doing their best cartwheels.

After the show, Perry met up with the Skims founder backstage and the two posed for pictures with fellow guests of the night, Sia and Paris Hilton. “Honestly, I’m the biggest Katy Perry fan,” Kardashian told the musician in a clip Perry posted to Instagram. “I’m not just saying that ’cause you’re here.”

“If you’re a big fan, can I finally be a sister?” the American Idol judge asked Kardashian, who immediately accepted her into the family empire: “Katy! We don’t even have to change the initial!”

Netflix Gets Simmered & Sautéed On Twitter For ‘Love Is Blind’ Live Reunion Debacle

Netflix, already skating on thin ice with some subscribers for its increased pricing and other issues, found themselves trending on Sunday (April 16) for less than favorable reasons. The popular unscripted series Love Is Blind was expected to air a live reunion episode on Netflix, but technical difficulties held up the show with folks on Twitter frying the streamer for wasting their time.

For those who live away from modern technology or just simply don’t care, Love Is Blind is the brainchild of Nick and Vanessa Lachey and puts together a collective of individuals who go on dates inside pods that obscure what they look like in order to foster a connection of the mind between two people. The social experiment is wildly popular and one of the top series on Netflix due to not only the premise of the show but the participants themselves.

The episodic drama of Love Is Blind built to a fever pitch this past Friday (April 14) with the airing of the wedding episode. We won’t offer spoilers here but a lot of the drama played out much as many expected with the usual twists and turns that the program is known for.

On Sunday, Netflix was supposed to air at 8 PM ET but the hiccups were evident from the start. This prompted the streamer to issue a statement and share that the episode will air today (April 17) at 3 PM ET.

To everyone who stayed up late, woke up early, gave up their Sunday afternoon… we are incredibly sorry that the Love is Blind Live Reunion did not turn out as we had planned. We’re filming it now and we’ll have it on Netflix as soon as humanly possible. Again, thank you and sorry.

The statement sparked a ferocious and often hilarious wave of snark and slander that we’ve captured below. Keep scrolling for those tweets.

Esteban Geller Promoted to General Manager at Sony Music U.S. Latin

Esteban Geller, who for nearly five years has led the marketing division at Sony Music U.S. Latin, has been promoted to the new position of general manager, Billboard has learned.

The Argentina-born Geller, based in Miami, will continue to report to Sony Music U.S. Latin president Alex Gallardo.

Geller was most recently senior vice president for artist relations & marketing for the label, working closely with superstar artists like Shakira, Maluma, Camilo, Rauw Alejandro, Wisin & Yandel, Manuel Turizo, Farruko and their teams. In his new role, he adds Puerto Rico and West Coast Operations to his purview, as well as radio/promotions and video commissioning.

“Esteban is one of the most dynamic, savvy, energetic, and enthusiastic executives in the business. He has played a key role in our expansion and the sustained success of countless acts,” said Gallardo in a statement. “He’s a true team player who doesn’t just envision big ideas; he actively executes them at the highest level.”

Highly-regarded among artists and management teams, Geller has gained a reputation as a tireless, proactive and solution-driven executive. His expertise comes from different fields. Prior to joining Sony Music in 2018, he worked with superstars Ricardo Arjona and Diego Torres (a Sony artists) and held jobs at event promoter Fenix Entertainment Group Latin America as well as MTV/Vh1 Latin America.

“It has been amazing to be part of Sony’s growth in the industry and I’m proud of what we have achieved over the past few years,” said Geller in a statement. “Every project is so important to us, and we approach each artist with the same care and diligence. Much appreciation to Alex and Afo [Verde, Sony’s CEO/President for Latin Iberia) who have entrusted me to not only develop music releases, but most important, artists careers.”

ByteDance Has Another App Driving Viral Success on TikTok

“New Home” is a pensive, wordless piano ballad — not the type of song that’s typically thought of as viral trend material on TikTok. But last month, Austin Farwell, who wrote and performed the track, noticed it appearing in a wave of videos. Many of these featured the actor Pedro Pascal munching peacefully on a sandwich — a snippet from the YouTube series Snack Wars — next to a block of text, something along the lines of “when you catch up with your friends and they’re all complaining about their trash men but you can’t relate cos your man is perfect and treats you like a princess every day.”

“I didn’t understand,” Farwell says. “I don’t know Pedro Pascal; I didn’t know why he was eating a sandwich. But if that’s the trend that people want to promote my music with, great.”

The Pascal videos were created using the program CapCut, which is owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. CapCut, which marketers joke is the new version of Apple’s Final Cut Pro, makes more advanced video editing techniques accessible to the masses, allowing clips like those with Pascal to be easily replicated and adjusted effectively with the click of a button. Chopping his calm chewing footage out of one video and into another is beyond many users’ technical ability. With CapCut, “you’re really not even editing, you’re choosing a template, adding something of your own, and the program is just generating this video for you,” says Abbey Fickley, a TikTok creator.

“They give you these slow motion effects, or make it go from blurry to super clear, or these glitchy cuts, which make the videos more dramatic,” Fickley continues. “That in turn makes the viewer more inclined to stay and watch it. It spices up your content — those editing features really do attract the viewer, instead of them just scrolling past it.”

Songs can be hitched to CapCut templates, so as they have proliferated on TikTok, they have become an important new area of focus for music marketers. “If you can match one of those [templates] to a sound that amplifies the video, or makes it more dynamic, then you suddenly have something that can act as a vessel for the sound to go viral,” explains Sanu Hariharan, co-head of music partnerships at Creed Media, a marketing company focused on Gen Z. “It’s been a really strong facilitator of user-generated content,” which is typically the metric that artist teams use to evaluate the success of marketing campaigns, especially on Tiktok but also on Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

A major label executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity went further: “If you want to break a song on TikTok right now” — and everybody with commercial aspirations does — “you have to attach it to something from CapCut.” In recent months, these trends have helped drive listeners to “New Home,” Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” (currently No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100), a mash-up of Ice Spice’s “In Ha Mood” (peaked at No. 58 on the chart dated March 22), Deftones’ “Change (In the House of Flies),” Hollywood Undead’s “Everywhere I Go,” and more.

CapCut launched globally in 2020, and it topped the app charts as early as 2021. Much in the same way that new music production tools like BandLab’s SongStarter have made it simple for those with minimal experience to create credible-sounding tracks, CapCut “makes it a lot easier for your everyday user to be able to create more polished videos,” says Jen Darmafall, director of marketing at ATG Group. “You don’t have to have a particular skill set when it comes to editing — there are templates on the platform for you to go and plug in what you want, whether it’s photos or videos or text overlays or transitions. That’s helped it skyrocket.”

In October, ByteDance made it even easier to jump between TikTok and CapCut: When users encountered a video on the former made with the latter, a new button allowed them to quickly start playing with the template on their own. Partly as a result of that change, “over the last six months or so,” clips made with CapCut are “in your face every day, non-stop, no matter what side of TikTok you’re on,” Darmafall says. CapCut clips are also peppering Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, further amplifying ByteDance’s influence in the social media market at a time when the company is facing intense scrutiny from the U.S. government.

Jess Keifer, director of digital strategy for Sony Music Nashville, noticed a CapCut trend set to “Fast Car” — a blurry scene, often accompanied by heart-warming text, that snaps into focus just as the singer up-shifts into the chorus — gain traction during the last week of March, leading to an “explosion” of similar TikTok clips. “It’s an easy source of inspiration for fans,” she says. Fickley hopped on the Combs trend and amassed a million views within two hours. “I’ve never had a video go viral that fast,” she says.

Much of TikTok’s appeal from the start has been that anyone can go viral, no matter how many followers you have or how long you’ve been using the platform. But to replicate the dance trends that were popular in the app’s early days, for example, a user either had to be good at dancing or comfortable with embarrassment. Neither are required to adjust a CapCut video template that riffs on Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard or the cartoon Tom and Jerry

“As you hop on the trending templates, you’re gonna get more views and visibility, which is what we all want,” explains Tim Gerst, CEO of digital marketing agency Thinkswell. “And so it becomes about, how can you find ways to take your own music or the things that you’re working on and implement it into templates that are trending?”

CapCut templates are especially useful for music marketers because they often come with songs attached to them. “Some people are having these templates created specifically for their sound or for the artist’s song that they are promoting,” Darmafall says. “And some of them are scouring TikTok for CapCuts every single day, finding the most popular templates, and putting their song to it” — seeing if they can sway a trend in their direction. “It’s so easy to unlink a sound and link a new sound to it,” Darmafall notes.

A common critique of TikTok is that it elevates songs but not artists: Millions of users might get obsessed with a snippet of a track but not bother to even figure out what the singer looks like. One advantage of CapCut templates is that artists can quickly jump on a trend that might otherwise take off without them. “It’s great for artists because it saves them time,” says Cassie Petrey, founder of the digital marketing company Crowd Surf. “We try to encourage our artists to use them as it makes sense for their brand,” Keifer adds.

Hariharan points to a recent video from Rag’n’Bone Man, where the gravel-voiced balladeer posted his own version of a CapCut template that was both set to his track “Human” and also included footage of the singer spinning in place. The Rag’n’Bone Man video earned more than 12 million views, easily outstripping any of his other recent clips. “This is a way that artists themselves can get in on the action,” Hariharan says. “It allows them to kind of unlock another layer, feed themselves in, increase their overall recognizability.”

“This is just going to become more and more important for us to pay attention to,” Keifer adds.

Frank Ocean Graced Coachella Stage, Livestream Was On Struggle

Met Gala Red Carpet 2021

Frank Ocean remains one of the music industry’s most beloved acts as evidenced by the stir he causes on social media at even a mere mention of music or a performance. The singer and songwriter graced the Coachella stages over the weekend but fans on Twitter were miffed because of the lacking livestream options.

Frank Ocean was the headlining act on Coachella’s mainstage on Sunday (April 16) but unlike every other performance before it, the event would not be aired on YouTube or any other streaming platform. The announcement of an actual livestream was teased on Twitter by YouTube but that tweet was deleted and replaced with the tweet below.

On Twitter, disappointed fans aired out their grievances and questioned why Coachella or Ocean would make a decision given that he is rarely seen onstage these days.

Fans in attendance did attempt to capture footage of the performance but some were shut down by security guards and the like. Further, a security guard working the front of the stage ended up becoming a social media hit due to his energetic dancing.

Reports on the ground also revealed that Ocean gave a loving tribute to his late brother, Ryan Breaux, who died of injuries after an automobile accident in 2020 at the age of 18.

Adding to the issues with the livestream, some fans who did catch glimpses of the set were left underwhelmed while others hailed the performance as Ocean’s big return to the masses.

Frank Ocean will headline Coachella again for its upcoming second weekend. No word yet if the performance will be streamed or not.

Metallica Will Release American Sign Language Videos For Every ’72 Seasons’ Song

Metallica celebrated National American Sign Language Day on Saturday (April 15) by announcing that they will become the first-ever major rock band to release American Sign Language (ASL) videos for every song from their new album. The roll-out began with the official ASL visual for the 72 Seasons title track, which features ASL interpretation from flame-haired Amber Galloway, a fan favorite festival sign language interpreter.

The clip features Galloway taking up one-third of the screen and signing the song’s two-minute guitar intro and galloping drums before tackling singer James Hetfield’s urgent vocals. The project is a collaboration between Metallica and the nonprofit Deaf Professional Arts Network (DPAN) and Galloway’s Amber G Productions.

In a video announcement, self-described hardcore deaf Metallica fan Tom Osbourne explained the project, signing, “It is my honor to announce that on April 25th Metallica will release ALL music videos from 72 Seasons in ASL. Metallica is the first major rock band to do this!”

In a band statement about the title track ASL video — and the upcoming 11 other 72 Seasons ASL clips — the group praised Galloway, who has gone viral several times for her high-energy signing at festivals including Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. “It’s been an honor to work with Amber and DPAN teams, and we hope that our fans in the deaf and hard of hearing community enjoy experiencing the album through these videos!” the band wrote.

In addition to their ASL video initiative, Metallica released three other videos over the weekend from the album that dropped on Friday. The animated Tristan Zammit-directed clip for “Shadows Fall” has heroic, anime-style versions of the quartet rocking out on a galactic sundial. Another Zammit-helmed animated clip for “Room of Mirrors” takes place in a haunted house filled with toothy flying eyeball monsters. A Tim Saccenti-directed live action performance clip for “Sleepwalk My Life Away” drops the Bay Area RRHOF members in a murky mountain landscape for a moodily lit performance under ominously swirling clouds.

In addition to 8 lyric videos, Metallica was slated to drop a new visual for “TooFar Gone?” at 10 a.m. ET on Monday (April 17).

Sacramento Kings Probe ‘Racial Bias’ Claims After E-40 Ejected From Game

The Sacramento Kings are investigating allegations from a Bay Area hip-hop star that “racial bias” led to him being kicked out of his seat during a playoff game against the Golden State Warriors.

The rapper E-40 said in a statement that he was heckled throughout the game Saturday night and addressed one heckler “in an assertive but polite manner” before security guards came and ordered him to leave the arena.

“Unfortunately, it was yet another reminder that — despite my success and accolades as a musician and entrepreneur — racial bias remains prevalent,” he said in a statement. “Security saw a disagreement between a Black man and a white woman and immediately assumed that I was at fault.”

The Kings said they are investigating the circumstances behind the ejection.

“The Sacramento Kings take these claims seriously and are investigating the facts and circumstances regarding the situation, as we do anytime an accusation like this is made,” the team said in a statement.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that E-40, whose real name is Earl Stevens, was standing and blocking the view of fans behind him and was given a warning after several complaints. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details of the situation weren’t released publicly.

The person said E-40 refused to comply and that security officials for the Warriors and Kings escorted him from his seat.

A second person familiar situation, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said E-40 was never given a warning by security about “excessive standing.” E-40 is a prominent Warriors fan and was even part of the delegation that visited the White House earlier this season.

“It’s unfortunate,” Warriors guard Klay Thompson said. “I love 40. He’s been our biggest supporter for years. I hope they right that ship because he deserves to be there by our bench. In my time knowing him, he’s always been respectful. He’s always been considerate of those around him. Very weird to see, and I hope it’s resolved.”

E-40 is known for his collaborations with other artists, including on songs such as “I Don’t (Expletive) With You” with Big Sean, “Snap Yo Fingers” with Lil Jon and Sean Paul of YoungBloodZ, and “U And Dat” with T-Pain and Kandi Girl.
