Music Stocks Down as Markets Show Optimism for U.S. Debt-Ceiling Deal

Stock markets ended the week on a positive note as investors showed optimism believing that Congress can negotiate a deal to increase the nation’s debt limit and avoid a historic default. The S&P 500 increased 1.3% to $4,205.45, up 0.3% on the week, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 2.2% on Friday (May 26) to finish the week up 2.5% — its fifth straight week of gains. South Korea’s KOSPI index improved 0.8% to 2,558.81 while the U.K.’s FTSE 1000 dropped 1.7% to 7,627.20.

The end-of-the-week rally didn’t get music stocks into positive territory, however. The Billboard Global Stock Index fell 1.9% this week as 15 of the index’s 21 stocks lost ground. Most of the companies’ performances fell into a narrow band of gains and losses in the low single digits. Two companies had double-digit losses: iHeartMedia fell 10.5% to $2.39 and has lost 61% year to date as the radio business experiences a soft advertising market. LiveOne, which announced on Tuesday it will acquire certain assets of podcast network Kast Media, dropped 15.2% to $1.28.

The index’s top performer was Round Hill Music Royalty Fund Ltd., which gained 3.3% to 0.775 pounds ($0.96). Madison Square Garden Entertainment and Sphere Entertainment Co. gained 2.2% and 1.7%, respectively. The two companies were under the same roof until Madison Square Garden Entertainment’s concert promotion business was spun off from the remainder of the company on April 21. Sphere Entertainment Co., which includes the Sphere venue set to open in Las Vegas on Sept. 29 with a U2 residency, declined 3.4% to $24.02 on Friday as Morgan Stanley set a post-spinoff price target of $26 per share.

K-pop stocks were uncharacteristically quiet this week. Shares of HYBE fell 3.9% to 270,000 KRW ($204.02) despite the company announcing on Wednesday its music will be available on Tencent Music Entertainment’s streaming platforms in China. SM Entertainment declined 2.6% to 104,800 KRW ($79.19). After strong quarterly earnings boosted YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment last week, both stocks were in line with their peers this week: YG Entertainment was flat at 92,000 KRW ($69.52) and JYP Entertainment dropped 1.7% to 113,700 KRW ($85.91). Still, K-pop stocks are arguably music’s bright spot in 2023. Year-to-date, the four companies’ stock have gained an average of 67.4%.

The Jonas Brothers Finally Reveal the Really Weird Way They Met

Jonas Brothers were Amelia Dimoldenberg’s latest lunch guests on her popular Chicken Shop Date segment, and she didn’t hold back on asking the hard-hitting questions.

“How did you guys all meet?” she hilariously asks the siblings at one point in the video. “It happened in stages, and these other two people introduced us,” Kevin Jonas jokingly replied, before Joe Jonas added, “We met through our parents.”

And yes, Nick Jonas still loves a “red dress,” which Dimoldenberg made sure to wear to their date in reference to the 30-year-old singer’s famous ad-lib in the group’s 2008 hit, “Burnin’ Up.”

“It was just a pure coincidence,” the journalist jokes of her outfit choice. “Looking through my wardrobe, I thought, ‘Oh, look at that –“

“Red dress!” Nick interjects in the tone from “Burnin’ Up,” before teaching Dimoldenberg how to sing it properly.

Joe’s wife, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, also makes an appearance at the end of the episode, when the host cuts her date with Joe short to hang out with his wife instead. “I’m bored. Can we go?” Turner asks Dimoldenberg from a table nearby, before the two happily leave the restaurant together.

The Jonas Brothers are fresh off the release of their sixth studio album, The Album, which gave the band their  fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated May 27). The trio previously led the list with Happiness Begins (2019), Lines, Vines and Trying Times (2009) and A Little Bit Longer (2008).

Roger Waters Being Investigated for Wearing Nazi-Like Uniform at Berlin Concert

BERLIN (AP) — Police in Berlin said Friday (May 26) that they have opened an investigation of Roger Waters on suspicion of incitement over a costume the Pink Floyd co-founder wore when he performed in the German capital last week.

Images on social media showed Waters firing an imitation machine gun while dressed in a long black coat with a red armband. Police confirmed that an investigation was opened over suspicions that the context of the costume could constitute a glorification, justification or approval of Nazi rule and therefore a disturbance of the public peace.

Once the police investigation is concluded, the case will be handed to Berlin prosecutors, who would decide whether to pursue any charges.

Waters has drawn ire for his support of the BDS movement, which calls for boycotts and sanctions against Israel. He has rejected accusations of antisemitism.

Authorities in Frankfurt tried to prevent a concert there scheduled for May 28, but Waters challenged that move successfully in a local court. In Munich, the city council said it had explored possibilities of banning a concert but concluded that it wasn’t legally possible to cancel a contract with the organizer. His appearance there on Sunday was accompanied by a protest attended by the local Jewish community’s leader.

Last year, the Polish city of Krakow canceled gigs by Waters because of his sympathetic stance toward Russia in its war against Ukraine.

“I just want to take a second and honor Tina Turner,” Beyoncé told the crowd at the Stade de France, as seen in videos shared to social media. “If you’re a fan of mine, you’re a fan of Tina Turner. I wouldn’t be on this stage without Tina Turner, so I want you guys to just scream, so she can feel your love. I feel so blessed that I was allowed to witness her brilliance.”

Earlier in the week, Bey paid tribute to Turner with a heartbreaking message on her website. “My beloved queen. I love you endlessly,” she wrote in her message. “I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”

Bey and Turner have publicly showered each other with love over the years, and even collaborated at the 50th annual Grammy Awards in 2008 for a high-energy performance of “Proud Mary.”

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” a statement posted to her Instagram account read. “Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Blockbuster Ticket Sales Are Expected to Continue Through 2023 — and Beyond

As 2023 heads into summer, multiple signs point to a healthy and growing live music business for the rest of the year. In recent weeks, executives from the publicly traded concert promotion and ticketing companies have signaled that surging consumer demand won’t slow down, and there will be enough tours to satiate music fans’ appetite for live events.

Demand has been strong “and is showing no signs of letting up,” said Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino during the company’s May 4 earnings call. Live Nation expects to sell more than 600 million tickets in 2023, up from 550 million in 2022. To date, the concert promoter has sold more than 100 million tickets to Live Nation events, a 20% increase from the prior-year period, and expects to host a record number of fans in 2023.

Vivid Seats, the publicly traded secondary ticketing marketplace, shares Live Nation’s sentiment. “Consumers continued to crave live experiences in the first quarter,” said CEO Stan Chia during a May 9 earnings call, “and we believe this trend will continue for many years.” Vivid Seats does business primarily in the U.S. while German promoter and ticketing provider CTS Eventim focuses on Europe. “Both in Germany and internationally, we are pursuing organic growth and anticipate that our business performance will continue on its successful course,” said CTS Eventim CEO Klaus-Peter Schulenberg in the quarterly results released May 24 that reiterated the positive outlook in its 2022 annual report of “moderately higher earnings” for the live entertainment segment 2023.

The concert business is meeting — and perhaps surpassing — some lofty expectations. In 2022, as the concert business exited the pandemic, the widespread belief was that pent-up demand for in-person experiences would drive the concert business beyond pre-pandemic levels. That turned out to be true. Concert promoter Live Nation posted record revenue of $6.2 billion in the third quarter that was 67% above the same period in 2019. What’s more, the volume of fans returning to concert venues was augmented by an unmatched willingness to absorb higher prices. Frenzied demand — and sky-high prices on the secondary market — for tours by Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen have showed A-list artists have yet to find their ceiling on prices.

Concert promoters have posted strong quarterly earnings that fit their narratives. Live Nation’s first-quarter revenue was up 71% to $3.1 billion. CTS Eventim’s online ticket sales increased 58% to 18 million as consolidated revenue improved 163% to 366.2 million euros ($393 million). At Vivid Seats, which also does business in major sports such as baseball and basketball, first quarter revenue grew 23.2% to $161 million and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization doubled to $42.4 million.

Investors absorb past earnings history while figuring out what to expect in the future, and according to JP Morgan analyst David Karnovky they often ask two questions about Live Nation: First, is there enough supply to meet growing, healthy demand? Yes, Live Nation president and CFO Joe Berchtold said at JP Morgan’s Global Technology, Media and Communications conference on Tuesday. That’s because global streaming platforms such as Spotify and social media apps like Instagram and TikTok allow artists to build global followings in ways that weren’t previously possible, he explained. K-pop and other up-and-coming genres of music “that maybe once were regional are now going global,” he said, and artists that used to sell out mid-sized venues are now selling out stadiums. “So, you’re seeing that supply continue to build.”

The second thing investors want to know is how demand will respond during a softer economy. Live Nation closely follows the indicators — such as on-sales show closings — Berchtold said, “but we’re not seeing anything that gives us pause.” Separately, Berchtold noted that Live Nation’s research indicates getting back to concerts are one of fans’ top priorities after the pandemic and will be “one of the last things they’re going to cut back on.”

Vivid Seats CFO Lawrence Fey also addressed the possibility of an economic downturn — a scenario becoming increasingly likely in the U.S. should Congress fail to find a compromise to raise the debt ceiling by early June. “[T]here’s a lot of chatter and concern out there” that demand will weaken “in the not-too-distant future,” said Fey, “but it continues to be the case that we’re seeing very robust demand across our event categories [and] across price points.” Beyond the consistently strong demand, Vivid Seats has “been pleasantly surprised by the supply calendar,” particularly a concert schedule that includes recently announced tours by Drake and Aerosmith, he added, “and [that] gives us optimism.”

The Return of Dogstar: Why Keanu Reeves’ Rock Trio Was Resurrected

Keanu Reeves dismisses the idea that playing bass in his long-defunct rock trio, Dogstar, was a passion project that he hoped to make time for in between a prolific Hollywood career. “It’s not ‘make time for it,’” he tells Billboard, his hair shagging into his eyes, during a Zoom call earlier this week. “It’s something that’s part of my life.”

Although Dogstar hadn’t released an album in over two decades — 23 years and four John Wick films ago — Reeves says that a proper reunion with his pals Bret Domrose and Rob Mailhouse had been on his mind for a while. “I missed playing together, I missed writing together, I missed doing shows together. It’s something I’ve always missed,” he admits. “We came to a spot where we weren’t playing anymore, and I missed it … Once we started to play, and it felt good, and really positive and creative, that’s when it was like, ‘Okay, let’s make this happen.’”

The reunion of Dogstar — which has been teased since last July, when their Instagram account declared, “We’re back” — finally comes into focus this weekend, when the trio takes the stage for their first public performance together at BottleRock Napa Valley music festival on Saturday (May 27). The band will play a mix of older songs from their previous studio albums, 1996’s Our Little Visionary and 2000’s Happy Ending, as well as unveil cuts from a forthcoming, as-yet-untitled album — which was always part of the plan when the reunion became official.

“I think all three of us just said, ‘Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s make a record,’” says Reeves. Singer-guitarist Domrose adds, “We just knew that there was ‘X’ amount of time, and we needed to make the most of it. We just locked on as wanting to make this record, and it happened pretty quickly.”

Reeves, Domrose and Mailhouse kept in touch over the years after Dogstar played its final show together in 2002. “We’ve sort of been sporadically getting together, because we’re all friends,” Mailhouse explains. The three would occasionally meet up in the rehearsal space of drummer Mailhouse’s home in Silver Lake to jam, but would seldom come up with new song ideas.

During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, however, those jam sessions became a bit more concentrated: house visits turned into shared quarantining, and with travel restricted, soon the trio were “stuck together, like we were at camp,” as Mailhouse puts it, and logging eight-hour rehearsal days together. Reeves adds, “We played the catalog songs, and then we can’t help it — we just started writing.” Within two and a half months, the guys had written more songs than they needed for Dogstar’s third studio album.

The timing and release details of the Happy Ending follow-up have yet to be announced, although the band members are confident that they and producer Dave Trumfio (Wilco, Built To Spill) have located a sound that will satisfy new listeners as well as longtime fans who have been waiting for their return. “[Dave] understood where we were coming from,” says Mailhouse, “and worked really well with Bret, layering guitars and doing lots of different sounds and ambient things — things that weren’t just hard rock, in-your-face music, [but] a little more textural.”

Dogstar has played private performances since reuniting, but Saturday’s set at BottleRock marks their years-in-the-making return to the spotlight, and the first of what they hope to be many more shows. The trio says that they’re too excited to feel jittery. “I’m sure as the hour grows closer, I’m gonna get much more nervous,” Domrose says with a laugh.

For Reeves, who joined the band as a rising Hollywood star and returns to it as one of the most consistent leading actors of the century, Dogstar represents a passion that he’s thrilled to return to in a real way after all these years. “It’s a space that I love,” he says, “and a space that I tried to protect.”

Christian Nodal, “Cazzualidades” (Sony Music Latin)

Christian Nodal has penned a love song to his girlfriend, rapper Cazzu, titled “Cazzualidades”—a word play of the Spanish-language word casualidades (casualties) and the Argentine singer’s name. A romantic tune that cleverly fuses mariachi, tango and flamenco, “Cazzualidades” details the honest sentiments he feels for the soon-to-be-mother of his first child. “I may not be Romeo but I love my Julieta,” he says in the track, referring to Cazzu’s real name, Julieta Cazzucheli. In the midst of the single, Nodal spits a fiery rap verse, where he assures that “those who love for real never lose” and “are you what I was looking for? Nah, you’re better than what was meant for me.”

“Cazzualidades” is included in Nodal’s new Forajido2 EP, home to previously-released bangers “Un Cumbion Dolido” and the Tini-assisted “Por El Resto De Tu Vida.” Cazzu & Nodal made their relationship officially public at the 2022 Latin Grammys last November. In April, the Argentinean artist revealed she was expecting a baby during one of her concerts. — JESSICA ROIZ

Yng Lvcas, Six Jewels 23 (Warner Music México)

Emerging Mexican artist Yng Lvcas is one of the very few, if not the only artist to come out of Mexico that has had success in reggaeton. The 23-year-old has been on a winning streak thanks to a remix to his reggaeton anthem “La Bebe” with Peso Pluma. It was the only reggaetón song he included in his 2021 debut EP, Wup? Mixtape1, that was all corridos. Currently, the track is No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, Yng Lvcas has honed his reggaetón sound and has unleashed Six Jewels 23, his second reggaeton set (following LPM).

Inspired by artists such as Bad Bunny, Arcángel and Anuel AA, the young act is on his way to make a name for himself in a genre where not many Mexican artists have achieved success. Six Jewels 23, a seven-track EP that includes “La Bebe – Remix,” showcases Lvcas’ ability to produce hooky beats and earwormy lyrics. The EP’s focus track is “Wazap,” in collaboration with urbano heavy-hitter Justin Quiles. The track is a bouncy reggaetón jam that finds the pair trading verses about a girl who’s hitting them up on WhatsApp. Yng Lvcas also collaborates with Sleezy O (“Erótica”) and Bounce Bosses (“Bandolero”) — who produced “La Bebe – Remix.” Stream the set above. –– GRISELDA FLORES

Chayanne, “Bailando Bachata” (Sony Music Latin)

Chayanne returns to tropical music with “Bailando Bachata,” the third single from his upcoming new album, which will also include his previously-released songs “Tú y Yo” and “Te Amo y Punto.” It’s his first foray into the Dominican genre in almost a decade, since the bachata-pop “Bailando Dos Corazones,” but the new song, he explains to Billboard Español, “is something more faithful, more complete, which makes me very excited.” “How lucky I am that I can see you when I wake up every day/ And when I travel, I miss you/ I carry your photograph in my wallet,” starts the romantic Spanish-language track, co-written by Chayanne, Yasmil Marrufo, Andy Clay Cruz Felipe and Mario Alberto Cáceres Pacheco. Just as romantic is the music video, directed by Katherine Díaz and produced by Guacamaya Films. Set in the 1970s, the clip stars Venezuelan actress and model Veronica Schneider, who lies down to watch her favorite series — starring Chayanne, of course — when she notices that the artist can see her from the screen. The pop icon’s voice blends perfectly with the Caribbean genre on this 3:15 minute song, a soothing balm to the soul that’s sure to get you dancing. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS

Peso Pluma, “Bye” (Doble P Records)

Powered by an emotional trumpet melody and a guitarrón that slaps, Peso Pluma drops a gut-wrenching kiss-off titled “Bye.” It’s the first solo song since the gripping corridos number “Por Las Noches,” and it already hits with each cutting verse dripping in sad-boy reminiscence. With lyrics like, “Bye/ Better be on your way/ While I smoke and drink wine/ Being with you no longer suits me/ Bye/ And I could care less/ I get distracted by princesses / And your kisses don’t interest me anymore,” it harkens back to Bad Bunny’s classic trap song “Soy Peor” in the way that Peso’s menacing confession is about his heart being tainted from romantic betrayal. The Guadalajara sensation currently is atop the Billboard Global 200 chart with “Ella Baila Sola” alongside Eslabon Armado. He currently has eight other tracks on the coveted all-genres chart, including “La Bebe” remix with Yng Lvcas, “Por Las Noches” remix featuring Nicki Nicole, “PRC” alongside Natanael Cano and more. — ISABELA RAYGOZA

Arthur Hanlon & Peter Nieto, “Darte un Beso (Sony Music Latin)

Virtuoso pianist Arthur Hanlon delights us with a reinterpretation of Prince Royce’s popular bachata “Darte un Beso” in the company of Cuban singer Peter Nieto. The cover is the opening track of Hanlon’s upcoming album, Legados: Bachata, slated for release on June 23 via Sony Music Latin and the first of forthcoming series of albums that will celebrate some of the greatest hits in Latin music. “I have dedicated my career and music to Latin music for over 20 years. It is an honor for me to make instrumental versions, for piano, of the best songs in Latin music,” the pianist says in a statement.

Hanlon gracefully delivers his instrumentals with a blend of R&B and soul arrangements, while honoring the original bachata, offering a refreshing and classy way to revive those beautiful songs that inspire positive feelings. Accompanying the release is an uplifting and inspiring video that celebrates love in all its expressions, incorporating retro clips of endearing moments of loving couples and families. — LUISA CALLE

Grupo Frontera, “Le Va Doler” (Grupo Frontera)

Grupo Frontera delivered the new upbeat norteño tune “Le Va Doler,” a nod to those who’ve healed after a painful heartbreak. This follows their latest hit “Un x100to” with Bad Bunny, which currently sits at No. 5 on the Hot 100. The band’s new song — written by Keytin, Ciey and Edgar Barrera — tell the story of a person navigating life after a rough breakup. Staying true to its core sound, Grupo Frontera subtly blends the norteño accordion with cumbia beats — giving life to melodic notes for each verse. “It will hurt when she sees that I’m over it. When she looks for me, and I don’t feel anything for her anymore, don’t feel anything,” lead singer Adelaido “Payo” Solís sings. — INGRID FAJARDO

Taylor Swift’s Top Collaborations, Ranked: Critics’ Picks

Taylor Swift is a queen of the modern pop world. But when she joins forces with other artists, especially ones at the top of their game, the songs are automatically a cultural event. Big or small, artists who work with Swift always seem to pair with her voice perfectly — which is probably why she’s done a number of duets throughout her career.

From her first-ever recorded duet with Colbie Caillat on her mainstream breakthrough album Fearless to a handful of remix features with artists like Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar and Haim, Billboard has rounded up a whopping 31 collaborations Swift has under her belt. We will note that there could be more or less depending on how you define a collaboration. She’s worked with a number of hit-making producers, from Jack Antonoff to Max Martin. She also has a few notable uncredited vocalists and backing vocalists throughout her catalog, including Imogen Heap on “Clean” and Marcus Mumford on “Cowboy Like Me.” There are a couple of live tracks — “Should’ve Said No” with Jonas Brothers and “Big Star” with Kenny Chesney. And we will never forget her teenage-friendly rap track “Thug Story” with T-Pain. But to keep it concise, this list only includes studio-recorded tracks with collaborators credited as a feature.

Now, this ranking was no easy feat. With over 150 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, there’s no doubt Swift is a hitmaker. But even Swifties can agree that some songs simply bop harder than others. “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Zayn, for example, is both fresh and focused — and has a Grammy nomination to show for it. “ME!,” featuring Panic! At The Disco frontman Brendon Urie, on the other hand… well, let’s just say it’s not our favorite (the music video was fun, though).

Check out where every single one of Swift’s collaborations lands on Billboard‘s ranking below.

Doja Cat Says She Keeps Changing Her Album Title Due to Her ADHD

Doja Cat is working on a follow-up to her 2021 groundbreaking album, Planet Her, and over the past few months, she’s been teasing fans with snippets and hints about the upcoming project.

However, one thing she keeps switching up is the album title. Back in March, the “Woman” singer suggested that the album would be called Hellmouth, but soon changed her mind and revealed that the title is First of All in a since-deleted tweet. Less than a week later, she posted another since-deleted tweet noting that she’s changing the album title once again.

Doja opened up about her creative process to Insider at a Patrón El Cielo launch part on Wednesday (May 24). “I put my ADHD kind of on display — by accident, I guess,” she said about selecting album titles. “I thought that Hellmouth was the name of the album, but then it wasn’t. But I’m good at doing things last minute. So I’ve been firing off random stuff and reading comments and seeing how people receive it and then, you know, saying ‘no’ a lot. ‘Just kidding.’”

She did however, say that she “finally” has an album title, adding, “It’s not First of All.

The Grammy winner has previously opened up about her ADHD with Rolling Stone, revealing that she dropped out of high school at age 16 due to her struggles with the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. “It felt like I was stuck in one spot and everybody else was progressing constantly,” she shared.

According to the CDC, ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders that is usually first diagnosed in childhood. Symptoms include having trouble focusing or controlling impulsive behaviors or becoming overly active.

If you or someone you love is struggling with ADHD, see the National Resource Center on ADHD for more information and links for help, as well as a call center (1-866-200-8098) with trained staff to answer questions about ADHD.
