Flume, Confidence Man, Julia Jacklin Lead Nominations for 2023 AIR Awards

Flume, Confidence Man, Julia Jacklin, Daniel Johns and Vance Joy are among the high-profile nominees for the 2023 AIR Awards, set for Aug. 3 in Adelaide, South Australia.

The coveted independent album of the year will be contested by former Silverchair frontman Johns (for FutureNever), Jacklin (Pre Pleasure), King Stingray (King Stingray), Laura Jean (Amateurs), and Northlane (Obsidian).

Also in the running for honors are Cub Sport, Genesis Owusu, The Jungle Giants, Ball Park Music, Pnau & Troye Sivan, and The Wiggles, organizers the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) announced Wednesday (March 31).

In a change from tradition, AIR this year adds two new industry categories, independent marketing team of the year and independent publicity team of the year, while the main business category — best independent label — will be selected from a shortlist that features ABC Music, Chapter Music, Domestic La La, Liberation and UNFD.

This year’s edition will be held at the Freemasons Hall in the city of churches, through a long-term alliance with the South Australian government.

“It is fantastic to be hosting the awards here in Adelaide – Australia’s only UNESCO City of Music – and I congratulate all of the nominees,” comments state minister for arts Andrea Michaels member of parliament.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to recognise the work the independent music industry does in providing talented and emerging artists and music businesses with a platform to share their art with a wider audience.”

The 17th annual AIR Awards will be bookended by the Indie-Con Australia conference, a gathering that focuses “on issues that are specifically relevant to the independent music sector,” organizers explain. Indie-Con is set for Aug. 2-4 at Mercury Cinema.

Black TikToker Shames Plane Passenger Over Racist Texts

A Black woman on TikTok publicly shamed a racist sitting next to her on a plane over texts he sent about Black and gay people to his family.

On Friday (May 26), Talia Rouse posted a video that showed her confronting a passenger sitting next to her sending off racist text messages. The travel blogger, who regularly posts tips and hotel reviews through her TikTok account to her 25,000 followers, was on a flight heading from Puerto Rico to Atlanta. The video begins with Rouse telling someone off-camera: “You know what? I wasn’t going to say anything … but I decided I want you to feel as uncomfortable as I do,” she began. “And I want you to know that I saw your text messages, and I think you’re disgusting.”

In the caption of the video, she stated that she initially glanced over at the phone of the man sitting next to her and saw “big Black woman” in a text. “He and his family went on and on about the woes of being stuck next to black and gay people,” Rouse recalled. “Then I see this man say he hopes airlines raise prices so these people get weeded out.”

She told the man that if airlines did start “weeding people out,” then maybe he can afford to sit with his family. “If you’re going to be bold enough to pull your phone out in the middle seat of an airplane and freely talk disrespectfully about Black people, then I’m going to be bold enough to say something to you,” she wrote in the video caption.

The man would offer an apology to Rouse, but she countered that it was only because she saw the texts. “You don’t have to be sorry to me. You’re sorry because I saw it,” she said. Rouse would post a follow-up video showing the man’s offensive text messages on the screen of the phone in response to a commenter asking, “We can’t even send texts to our family about how unpleasant you people are?” on the first video. She countered with the caption, ‘Not when you’re in the middle seat next to me, no.”

Rouse didn’t respond to further press inquiries.

BTS Sets New Single ‘Take Two’

BTS is back.

In celebration of their 10th anniversary, the K-pop superstars will drop “Take Two,” a new digital single, on June 9.

The title of “Take Two” is a nod to BTS progressing into “their second chapter,” reads a statement from their reps at HYBE, and is said to be an “ode to their fans” — ARMY.

Bandmate SUGA participated in the production of the new recording, with RM and j-hope contributing to the songwriting, the statement continues.

As previously reported, the South Korea-formed phenomenon will celebrate their milestone with BTS 10th Anniversary FESTA. The annual event coincides with the date of the group’s debut (June 13, 2013), and will roll out from today, culminating in a grand finale June 17 in Seoul.

BTS FESTA at Yeouido, in the South Korean capital, will be open to the public.

Formed around Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, BTS made its first Billboard chart appearance in 2013, when “No More Dreams” debuted at No. 14 on World Digital Song Sales (before climbing to No. 2 seven years later). Since then, the group has broken numerous records, including the most Hot 100 No. 1 debuts among groups and the most top 10 debuts among groups. All seven members have now scored solo hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

With BTS having tallied six Hot 100 No. 1s, and Jimin notching his first with “Like Crazy,” BTS joined the Beatles and the Supremes as the only groups with at least six leaders and at least one member having led the list solo.

The hits have dropped around the globe. In the U.K., BTS has bagged five top 10 appearances on the national albums survey, including two No. 1s. The septet has also hit the top 10 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart on four occasions.

Tina Turner’s Catalog Soars On U.K. Midweek Chart

The late, great Tina Turner is about to make a major chart comeback.

As U.K. fans mourn Turner’s death last Wednesday (May 24), aged 83, the legendary performer could land four titles in the national albums chart, led by The Platinum Collection. Turner’s career retrospective could crack the top 10 for the first time, reentering at No. 8 on the midweek chart, the Official Charts Company reports. The Platinum Collection originally peaked at No. 14 following its release in 2009.

Close behind is Turner’s 1989 LP Foreign Affair, which features her hit “The Best.” Foreign Affair is set to reenter the Official Chart at No. 10.

Another hits compilation, 1994’s The Collected Recordings, is poised for a No. 12 return, while the U.S. superstar’s Private Dancer from 1984, one of the greatest comebacks of the 20th century, could vault to No. 31, having originally peaked at No. 2.

During her lifetime, Turner landed nine top 10 albums in the U.K., including two No. 1s (Foreign Affair and the soundtrack to What’s Love Got To Do With It).

Lewis Capaldi blasted to No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart last Friday (May 26) with Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, the fastest-selling album of 2023. Broken By Desire leads the midweek chart again, ahead of two former leaders, Taylor Swift’s Midnights (up 10-2), which benefits from the release of Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition); and Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (up 5-3), which lifts as he makes a victory lap of his homeland with his Love On Tour.

Meanwhile, Mick Hucknall’s Simply Red could bag the highest new entry with Time, new at No. 4 on the Official Chart Update. If Time keeps ticking away, it’ll give the British act their 15th U.K. top 10.

Also eyeing top 10 berths are singer-songwriter Arlo Parks’ sophomore album My Soft Machine, the followup to the U.K. indie star’s debut Mercury Prize-winning LP from 2021, Collapsed in Sunbeam. My Soft Machine is new at No. 5 on the chart blast.

Finally, veteran alternative pop act Sparks’ is set for a best chart position since 1974 with The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte. The U.S. act, which recently completed a tour of the U.K., is eying a No. 6 bow on the national chart.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published Friday (June 2).

Who Won Every Season of ‘America’s Got Talent’?

NBC’s America’s Got Talent is kicking off its 18th season on Tuesday (May 30), and Billboard is looking back at the 17 talented winners who made history on the series so far.

Created by former American Idol judge, X Factor mastermind and Syco Entertainment founder Simon Cowell, the global talent competition premiered in the U.S. on NBC in 2006. The idea was to find the best talent of any age in the country — whether they specialized in singing, dancing, performing magic tricks, acting as a ventriloquist or even training dogs to do tricks — and then have them headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip on top of winning a $1 million cash prize.

The show is currently hosted by Terry Crews and features Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandel as the judges, who recruit viewers’ help to crown the most talented contestant, and each season’s top pick runs the gamut of skill sets.

A handful of musicians have come out on top in the past, including the show’s first-ever champ, then-11-year-old singer Bianca Ryan, whose tiny frame belied her massive pipes on the Dreamgirls showstopper “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Other musical winners include late opera singer Neal Boyd (season 3), jazz singer Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. (season 6), then 12-year-old singer/songwriter Grace VanderWaal (season 11), and blind and autistic singer Kodi Lee (season 14). Two singing ventriloquists have taken home the prize too, with Terry Fator winning season 2 and then-12-year-old performer Darci Lynne winning season 12.

Come on ‘Barbie,’ Let’s Go Party! Dua Lipa Sets the Tone for Dolled-Up Soundtrack

Dua Lipa took the first fuzzy-stilettoed step toward the release of the Barbie film soundtrack last week when she dropped “Dance the Night,” the maiden song from the Greta Gerwig-directed summer movie.

In addition to Lipa’s disco-ready song and a sparkling video to match, we also learned that the soundtrack is executive produced by Mark Ronson (Lipa’s previous collaborator on Silk City’s “Electricity”) and saw the partial track list. Some of the biggest revelations from the track list are that Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice are teaming up with “Barbie Girl” band Aqua on the new song “Barbie World” and that Barbie star Ryan Gosling has his own song, appropriately titled “I’m Just Ken.”

Sia Reveals Autism Spectrum Diagnosis

Sia is opening up about a new chapter in her health journey. The “Chandelier” singer revealed her autism spectrum diagnosis on a recent episode of Rob Has a Podcast.

“I’m on the spectrum and I’m in recovery. There’s a lot of things,” Sia told Survivor contestant Carolyn Wiger during the podcast. “Being in recovery and also knowing about which neuroatypicality you may have or may not have, I think one of the greatest things is nobody can ever know you and love you when you’re filled with secrets and living in shame.”

She added, “For 45 years I was like, ‘I’ve got to go put my human suit on.’ Only in the last two years have I become fully, fully myself.”

Back in 2020, Sia came under fire from the autism community for casting a neurotypical actress, Maddie Ziegler, to portray an autistic teenager in her directorial film debut Music. “Grrrrrrrrrr. F–kity f–k why don’t you watch my film before you judge it? FURY,” the singer tweeted after dropping a teaser that introduced Ziegler’s non-verbal character, who communicates to the world through song and dance.

For example, Irish actress Bronagh Waugh tweeted, “Hi Sia, can I ask why you didn’t cast a disabled actor for this part? It’s pretty offensive the way you’ve chosen to portray this character. People with disabilities are not broken and don’t need fixing.” Sia responded, “I agree. I’ve never referred to music as disabled. Special abilities is what I’ve always said, and casting someone at her level of functioning was cruel, not kind, so I made the executive decision that we would do our best to lovingly represent the community.”

Sia wrote the script and 10 original songs for the accompanying album and told commenters that she spent three years doing research, revealing that Music is based on an unnamed friend on the spectrum who “found it too stressful being non verbal, and I made this movie with nothing but love for him and his mother.” She also said there are 13 people on the spectrum cast in the film and that two people on the spectrum were advising her at all times, calling the movie a “love letter to caregivers and to the autism community.”

Bad Bunny Extends Top 10 Record on Hot Latin Songs With ‘Where She Goes’

Bad Bunny’s longtime top 10 record on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart adds a new chapter this week with the debut of his latest single “Where She Goes” at No. 2 (June 3-dated list). Thanks to his steady performance, which dates to 2017, Benito extends his record for the most top 10s in the chart’s history.

“Where She Goes’” start in the runner-up slot and secures the global star his unprecedented 61st top 10 on the multi-metric ranking, which blends airplay, streaming activity, and digital sales. Bad Bunny snatched the top 10 cup after breaking off a tie with Enrique Iglesias and Luis Miguel (all with 39 top 10s) on June 19, 2021, a record he’s held since.

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” remains at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs for an eighth week.

“Goes” blasts in at No. 2 on Hot Latin Songs as the top-selling tune of the week, (No. 1 on Latin Digital Song Sales), with 2,000 downloads sold during its first tracking week ending May 25, according to Luminate; also a record-extending 61st top 10 there.

The Jersey Club, drill and dembow-fused track arrives at No. 2 on Latin Streaming Songs with 23.4 million official U.S. streams during the same period. “Goes” sits right below Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola,” which remains in charge despite a 12% dip in streams, to 27.9 million. Plus, “Goes’” opening streaming sum was enough to debut at No. 3 on the all-genre Streaming Songs ranking.

Further, “Goes” also shows activity among Latin stations, with 2,000 audience impressions in its first week, though not enough to make it to the Latin Airplay ranking, which factors in all airplay, regardless of its format.

Bad Bunny teased “Goes” days before its release on TikTok, followed by an Instagram post the morning of its release day. The MAG-produced Spanish-language tune, dropped May 18 at 5 p.m. Pacific time via Rimas along with a star-studded music video set in the California desert, with cameos by Frank Ocean, Lil Uzi Vert, Dominic Fike and others.

Beyond its top 10 start on Hot Latin Songs, “Goes” takes over Billboard Global 200 storming at No. 1, bows at No. 3 on Global Excl. U.S. and makes its No. 8 debut on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Fuerza Regida Nabs Career High Debut with “TQM”: Elsewhere on Hot Latin Songs, Fuerza Regida strikes out a new chart success with the No. 5 debut of “TQM.” It’s the group’s highest-charting start among 21 visits. It’s also Regida’s third top 10, after the two-week champ “Bebe Dame,” with Grupo Forntera, in January.

“TQM” bows in the upper region propelled by its streaming activity. The song, released May 19, recorded 13.1 million official streams during its first week. That sum yields a No. 17 start on Streaming Songs and a No. 5 debut on Latin Streaming Songs, also a third top 10 on the latter.
