With 10 seconds to think of and sing a lyric featuring a key word, Leto started off strong by associating the world “please” to the Beatles’ 1965 hit, “Help!” He then breezed through Eddie Murphy’s “Party All the Time” for “party,” Little Richard’s “Good Golly Miss Molly” for the word “good,” When In Rome’s “The Promise” for the world “promise,” Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” for “ride” and many more.

Leto even threw in a few Thirty Seconds to Mars songs, opting to sing “A Beautiful Life” for the word “beautiful,” “The Kill” for “free” and “Stuck” for the word “stuck.”

“My brother and I started working right when COVID began,” he recalled. “It was an album that was originally born into COVID and ‘Stuck’ started off as a song about being stuck in a certain part of your life […] then ultimately, that liberation that comes along with breaking out of that period.”

He also proved that he loves BTS, immediately diving into the group’s Hot 100 chart topper “Dynamite” for the word “dynamite.” “BTS, baby, come on!” the rocker exclaimed after singing the chorus. “Got to give it to my boys. We go back.”

He continued, “I think I introduced them at their first award show,” before jokingly adding, “I’m going to pretend even if it’s not true. Now, it’s on my gravestone. BTS, I was there for you.”

Leto’s final “Song Association” score was an impressive 13 out of 15. Watch the whole clip below.

Former Playboy Model Accuses Bill Cosby of Drugging and Sexually Assaulting Her in 1969

A former Playboy model who alleges Bill Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her and another woman at his home in 1969 sued him Thursday under a new California law that suspends the statute of limitations on sex abuse claims.

In her lawsuit, Victoria Valentino, 80, says she was an actress and singer 54 years ago, when she met Cosby, now 85. The comedian and actor later approached her at a Los Angeles café, where he spotted her crying over the recent drowning death of her 6-year-old son.

The Associated Press does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly.

Cosby offered to pay for a spa treatment for Valentino and a friend, and then sent a chauffeured car to pick the women up for dinner. That evening at a steakhouse, Cosby gave them each a pill, she said in the court filing.

“Here! Take this!” the lawsuit alleges Cosby said to them. “It will make you feel better. It will make us ALL feel better.”

Cosby then drove the women to his house, where Valentino passed out on a couch, and later woke up and witnessed him sexually assaulting her unnamed friend, according to the lawsuit. The court documents allege Cosby then “engaged in forced sexual intercourse” with Valentino while she was incapacitated from the drug.

Valentino’s allegations come on the heels of lawsuits last year by six Cosby accusers in New York under a similar provision known as a “lookback” law that allows adults to file sexual abuse cases for allegations that had fallen outside the statute of limitations.

The former “Cosby Show” star, who has been accused of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment by at least 60 women, has denied all allegations involving sex crimes. He was the first celebrity tried and convicted in the #MeToo era — and spent nearly three years at a state prison near Philadelphia before a higher court threw out the conviction and released him in 2021.

His spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt, said Thursday that Valentino’s lawsuit lacks “any proof or facts” and that so-called lookback laws violate constitutional rights aimed at protecting crime victims and “those that are accused of a crime.”

“What graveyard can Mr. Cosby visit, in order to dig up potential witnesses to testify on his behalf?” Wyatt asked in a statement. “America is continuing to see that this is a formula to make sure that no more Black Men in America accumulate the American Dream that was secured by Mr. Cosby.”

The lawsuit in LA County Superior Court was filed nearly two years after Cosby left prison when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his 2018 sexual assault conviction. They found he gave incriminating testimony in a deposition about the encounter only after believing he had immunity from prosecution. The trial judge and an intermediate appeals court had found no evidence of such immunity.

Earlier this year, a Los Angeles jury awarded $500,000 to a woman who said Cosby sexually abused her at the Playboy Mansion when she was a teenager in 1975.

Seven other accusers received a settlement from Cosby’s insurers in the wake of the Pennsylvania conviction over a defamation lawsuit they had filed in Massachusetts. Their lawsuit said that Cosby and his agents disparaged them in denying their allegations of abuse.

Valentino’s lawsuit requests a jury trial and seeks unspecified punitive damages.

Kimberly Perry Reveals That She Had a Miscarriage Before Creating New Song

Kimberly Perry has launched her return to country music as a solo artist with her new song, “If I Die Young Pt. 2,” from her upcoming album, Bloom, out June 9 via RECORDS Nashville. The new song revisits one of the signature hits from her work as part of sibling trio The Band Perry, “If I Die Young,” which Perry wrote solo, and has been certified 7x multi-platinum by the RIAA.

In a recently released mini-documentary, Perry revealed how having a miscarriage played a role in the creation of her new music. A few months prior to writing “If I Die Young Pt. 2,” Perry suffered a pregnancy loss.

“I had actually just gone through a miscarriage a few months before, which was a really sad time,” Perry shared. “So in writing the second verse, it was like, well, I would really love to set this intention that there is a baby coming, a healthy baby who’s going to be here at some point. It felt like it really held hands with the original version, because the entire original version was sort of this romantic plea for all the things that I was hoping for. A few months after we recorded the song, I found out I was pregnant.”

Perry and her husband Johnny Costello revealed in April they are expecting a baby boy due in late August.

“If I Die Young Pt. 2” finds Perry simultaneously honoring her mother while singing of passing her legacy on to the next generation.

“It, I believe, reflects all of the growth, life growth and creative growth that I’ve had, but it also feels like the core of that girl that I was love and know from 10 years ago,” Perry said in the mini-documentary. “And I’m just so grateful to have those pieces put together in part two.”

No Doubt’s ‘Don’t Speak’ Video Hits One Billion YouTube Views

Nearly 30 years after its release, the music video for No Doubt‘s signature 1995 hit, “Don’t Speak,” has reached one billion views on YouTube.

The recent milestone marks the band’s first video — and one of less than 20 released in the 1990s — to enter the Billion Views Club, according to a press release from the video sharing platform.

“Don’t Speak” was the third single off No Doubt’s 1995 third studio album, Tragic Kingdom. The track gave the Gwen Stefani-led band its first No. 1 on Billboard‘s Pop Songs airplay chart, leading for an impressive total of 10 weeks. “Don’t Speak” was also nominated for song of the year and best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals at the 40th Grammy Awards.

The power ballad lamented two break ups — Stefani from the band’s bassist Tony Kanal, and from her brother Eric Stefani, who left the band before the album’s release in October 1995. “When I was writing back then, I was so naive, I didn’t know anyone would hear it ever,” Stefani reflected on the track on its 25th anniversary in 2021. “We had been working on that record for so long before it came out. So I think when there’s something that honest and real and pure — and not done for any other reason than just to say it for your own heart — then people connect to that.  … It was so different from everything else on our record, so the fact that it was the defining world hit that it was — and continues to be — is insane.”

Robert Carlton Appointed President of SMACK

Robert Carlton has been appointed president of SMACK, where he will now oversee all facets of the company, including its publishing, digital and management branches. Carlton will be an equity partner in the company as he takes over from outgoing SMACK president Michael McAnally Baum, who joins the ownership team alongside Robin Palmer and company founder Shane McAnally.

Carlton has worked at SMACK since 2014. The company’s publishing arm, SMACKSongs, includes songwriters McAnally, Josh Jenkins and more than 20 staff writers who have contributed to seven No. 1 country hits in 2022 alone. SMACKManagement’s roster includes “Fancy Like” hitmaker Walker Hayes, while SMACKTok, the company’s digital arm, offers influencer marketing services and focuses on connecting artists with fans through social media platforms.

Carlton also manages McAnally, who’s appeared as a judge on NBC’s Songland and co-created the Broadway musical Shucked, which has been nominated for nine Tony Awards at the 2023 ceremony.

“From intern to the presidency, Robert Carlton’s steady hand, work ethic, and innate instincts have earned him the top office at SMACK,” said McAnally Baum in a statement. “As a visionary who grew up with the company, he has shown how his passion and dedication will lead the team at SMACK into their next chapter of success.”

“What an honor to be entrusted to lead SMACK,” Carlton added. “This is an incredible company with the most incredible people, that all started with Shane, Michael, and Robin’s leadership. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to get to learn, both professionally and personally, from each of them. When I started here almost 10 years ago, I knew it was a great opportunity, but I never could’ve dreamed it would be all that it is today. I think our future is brighter than ever!”

Dear Music Industry: Don’t Let DEI Die

Since joining Billboard in 1999, I’ve had the privilege to witness countless R&B and hip-hop artists pour their hearts out onstage and to share their hard-won journeys offstage. During that time, I’ve also had the privilege to tell the stories of songwriters, producers, executives, managers and staffers across the music industry who all play vital roles in the success and evolution of these genres — but never more urgently than in the last three years.

On June 2, 2020, #TheShowMustBePaused brought the music business to a standstill for a day of racial reckoning. It was high time to reverse decades of systemic bias practiced by an industry that had become disproportionately wealthy through the efforts of Black people, their music and culture.

Initially, the industry listened, but the Black Music Action Coalition’s latest report card indicates that the promises made have been largely performative.

Over the last three years, Black executives have won some major C-suite appointments. These include Tunji Balogun joining Def Jam Recordings as chairman/CEO; Rayna Bass rising to co-president of 300 Entertainment; Lanre Gaba’s promotion to co-president of Black music at Atlantic Records; Ryan Press ascending to president of North America at Warner Chappell; Carolyn Williams’ appointment to executive vp at RCA Records; and, most recently, Ezekiel Lewis moving into the role of president of Epic Records.

But sadly, there have also been too many examples of exasperating tone-deafness. Among them are Motown Records’ reintegration under sister label Capitol Records and accompanying staff layoffs during Black History Month following the departure of chairwoman/CEO Ethiopia Habtemariam. There was also the debacle involving Capitol’s racist Black virtual “robot rapper” artist, FN Meka. Both Habtemariam’s exit and FN Meka were cited in the BMAC’s report card, along with the organization’s concern that the industry could revert to its pre-#Show status quo.

Black music executives and creatives I’ve spoken to over the last 18 months say the backsliding is already happening.

As one major-label Black senior executive told me, “I don’t need another initiative that’s conceived, developed, executed and resourced by Black executives. There needs to be a through line of white executives doing this. We need to see them put value to the things [we do] that have derived value for them. Until we see that on a consistent basis across the board, we’re not really going to see change.”

We can’t let DEI become just another flavor of the month. It’s time for the industry leaders who declared they were allies in 2020 to renew their pledges to the Black music community to make meaningful — and rightfully deserved — systemic change happen. No one ever loses sight of the almighty bottom line in this or any business. But please keep this in mind: Change will lead to even greater success.

Raven-Symoné Says She Had Dates Sign NDAs ‘Before Naughty Time Comes’

Raven-Symoné has grown up in the spotlight, which meant also navigating dating as a celebrity from a young age.

The longtime Disney Channel star joined Howie Mandel on his Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast recently, where she revealed that privacy was a concern while dating. “All of my relationships, especially – obviously – when I started dating, I had to get people to sign NDAs,” she explained. “It took me a while to wrap my head around it because it’s very impersonal, but someone in our position needs to do that.”

So when were the NDAs presented? “Before the naughty times come,” Raven-Symoné said with a laugh, before continuing, No, I’m serious — right before naughty time comes.”

Raven-Symoné is now happily married to Miranda Pearman-Maday, whom she tied the knot with in 2020. She revealed, however, that even her now-wife signed an NDA at some point. “We were in New York. We were in this outdoor French type of restaurant, and my mom had been bugging me,” Raven-Symoné recalled “She was like, ‘You got to get it signed. I’m like, ‘She’s from the industry.’ And my mom was bugging me.”

The That’s So Raven actress continued, “I was really reluctant because I knew something was different about Miranda.”

While Pearman-Maday was hesitant at first, she signed it because she “understood” the situation. “We both were like, ‘This takes away the genuineness of it all, but we also understood that we live in Hollywood,’” Raven-Symoné said, before adding, “She knows who she is. So she did it.”

Christian Nodal’s ‘Un Cumbión Dolido’ Soars to No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay Chart

Christian Nodal’s “Un Cumbión Dolido” surges to No. 1 from No. 4 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart (dated June 3). With the new coronation, Nodal cements his record for the most champs among soloists (eighth overall), with 15 No. 1s since the chart launched in 1994. Plus, he’s the only solo act to lead the chart in 2023.

According to Luminate, “Un Cumbión Dolido” crowns Regional Mexican Airplay boosted by a 27% gain in audience impressions, to 7.7 million, logged during the May 19-25 tracking week. Released Feb. 20 via Producciones Ladrón/Sony Music Latin, the cumbia with mariachi norteño, takes the lead in its 10th week.

“Cumbión” is a single from Nodal’s third EP, Forajido EP2, released May 29. The six-song set is a follow-up to Forajido (EP), which joined three full-length LPs when it debuted and peaked at No. 6 in June 2022 to grant Nodal his fourth straight top 10 on Regional Mexican Albums.

As “Cumbión” cracks the No. 1 spot on Regional Mexican Airplay, it trades places with Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s ‘Ella Baila Sola” after one week in charge. Now, with 15 champs to his name, Nodal strengthens his long-time rule as the soloist with the most No. 1s, a status he assumed April 24, 2021, when “Duele,” his team-up with Alejandro Fernández, landed at the summit.

Further, Nodal is the only act thus far to lead Regional Mexican Airplay on his own, unaccompanied by any other act in 2023, among the 15 acts who have reached the top. The last soloist to rule the ranking was Gerardo Ortiz with “Modo Crudo” last October (one week).

Outside of its Regional Mexican Airplay coronation, “Cumbión” makes progress on the overall Latin Airplay chart, pushing to No. 6 after breaking the top 10 barrier the week prior, at No. 9.

Grupo Firme & Gerardo Coronel Take the Lead

Elsewhere on the Latin charts, Gerardo Coronel nabs his first top 10 on Latin Airplay thanks to “Que Onda Perdida” with Grupo Firme, which rallies 21-8 in its sixth week.

“Que Onda,” originally released Feb. 17 via RB/Union Music, breaks new ground after the Grupo Firme collab released through Music VIP, had a robust 52% increase in audience impressions to 7.2 million, earned during the same period, becoming the Greatest Gainer of the week.

Coronel takes home a first champ after he reached No. 32 with “Te Felicito” in May. Grupo Firme, meanwhile, picks up its seventh top 10, after the Tijuana, Baja California-based band landed at No. 7 with “Alaska” in November.

As “Onda” surges 13 rankings on Latin Airplay, the track joins three other songs that have ascended as much — or more — in 2023, notably all regional Mexican titles: Pepe Aguilar and Intocable’s “No Me Hablen de Amor” (chart dated Jan. 28) and Yuridia and Angela Aguilar “Que Agonía” (Feb. 11-dated list) both soared 28-10, while Carin Leon and Grupo Frontera’s “Que Vuelvas” climbed 21-6 (Jan. 28).
