Top Senator Urges Swift Action on AI Regulations, Calling This a ‘Moment of Revolution’

Calling the rapid growth of artificial intelligence tools a “moment of revolution,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that the government must act quickly to regulate companies that are developing it.

The New York Democrat said he is working on what he calls “exceedingly ambitious” bipartisan legislation to maximize the technology’s benefits and mitigate significant risks.

While Schumer did not lay out details of such legislation, he offered some key goals: protect U.S. elections from AI-generated misinformation or interference, shield U.S. workers and intellectual property, prevent exploitation by AI algorithms and create new guardrails to ward off bad actors.

AI legislation also should promote American innovation, Schumer said in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

“If applied correctly, AI promises to transform life on Earth for the better,” Schumer said. “It will reshape how we fight disease, tackle hunger, manage our lives, enrich our minds and ensure peace. But there are real dangers that present themselves as well: job displacement, misinformation, a new age of weaponry and the risk of being unable to manage this new technology altogether.”

Schumer’s declaration of urgency comes weeks after scientists and tech industry leaders, including high-level executives at Microsoft and Google, issued a warning about the perils that artificial intelligence could pose to humankind.

“Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” their statement said.

Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans and running wild have intensified in recent months with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. It has sent countries around the world scrambling to come up with regulations for the developing technology, with the European Union blazing the trail with its AI Act expected to be approved later this year.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden convened a group of technology leaders in San Francisco to debate what he called the “risks and enormous promises” of artificial intelligence. In May, the administration brought together tech CEOs at the White House to discuss these issues, with the Democratic president telling them, “What you’re doing has enormous potential and enormous danger.”

“We’ll see more technological change in the next 10 years that we saw in the last 50 years,” Biden said.

White House chief of staff Jeff Zients’ office is developing a set of actions the federal government can take over the coming weeks regarding AI, according to the White House.

Schumer’s hands-on involvement in crafting AI legislation is unusual, as Senate leaders usually leave the task to individual senators or committees. But he has taken a personal interest in regulating the development of artificial intelligence, arguing that it is urgent as companies have already introduced human-like chatbots and other products that could alter life as we know it. He is working with another Democrat, Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, and Republican Sens. Mike Rounds of South Dakota and Todd Young of Indiana to speak with experts, educate colleagues and write the legislation.

It’s an unexpected role for Schumer, in particular, who famously carries a low-tech flip phone, and for the Senate as a whole, where the pace of legislation is often glacial.

Senators average around retirement age and aren’t known for their mastery of high-tech. They’ve been mocked in recent years for basic questions at hearings — asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg simple questions about how his platform works at a 2018 hearing on Russian interference, for example — and for a bipartisan reluctance to regulate the technology industry at all.

Schumer, along with several Republican colleagues, say the federal government can no longer afford to be laissez-faire with tech companies.

“If the government doesn’t step in, who will fill its place?” Schumer asked. “Individuals and the private sector can’t do the work of protecting our country. Even if many developers have good intentions, there will always be rogue actors, unscrupulous companies, and foreign adversaries that seek to harm us. And companies may not be willing to insert guardrails on their own, certainly if their competitors are not required to insert them as well.”

Attempting to regulate AI, Schumer said, “is unlike anything Congress has dealt with before.”

It is unclear if Schumer will be able to accomplish his goals. The effort is in its earliest stages, with the bipartisan working group just starting a series of briefings for all 100 senators to get them up to speed. In the House, legislation to regulate or oversee artificial intelligence has been more scattershot, and Republican leaders have not laid out any ambitious goals.

Schumer acknowledged that there are more questions than answers about the technology.

“It’s not like labor or healthcare or defense where Congress has a long history we can work off of,” Schumer said. “In fact, experts admit nobody is even sure which questions policymakers should be asking. In many ways, we’re starting from scratch.”

Celine Dion’s 2023 ‘Love Is Love’ Pride Playlist Includes Tina Turner, Madonna, Queen, Britney Spears, Lizzo & More

It’s a few weeks in, but Celine Dion made the wait for her 2023 Pride Month playlist well worth it. The singer posted her “Love Is Love” Pride playlist on Wednesday (June 21), a massive 81-track roster that, of course, includes a few of her new songs and some classics, as well as killer selections from Madonna, Tina Turner, Britney Spears, Queen, RuPaul, Lady Gaga and more.

“Only love, only love, only love, only love is the gift! Love is for everyone, no matter who you are, where you’re from and who you want to love! Be yourself and be loud!” read a tweet from the singer about the super-packed list that runs more than five hours.

The party kicks off with a pair of Dion’s tracks from the recent Love Again soundtrack, “The Gift” and “I’ll Be,” followed by a nod to the late rock goddess Turner (“The Best”), Candi Staton’s 1970s disco classic “Young Hearts Run Free,” Madonna’s “Music” and Robyn’s modern dance classic “Dancing on My Own.”

There’s fellow Canadian Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” Britney’s “Stronger,” and Sam Smith’s cover of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love,” as well as Lizzo’s “Good as Hell” (featuring Ariana Grande), ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” and Lady Gaga’s ultimate pride paean, “Born This Way.”

The list also includes tracks from Harry Styles (“Late Night Talking”), Sia (“Unstoppable”), Queen (“Don’t Stop Me Now”), Cher (“Believe”), Katy Perry (“I Kissed a Girl”) and a few from RuPaul (“Sissy That Walk,” “Supermodel (You Better Work).”

Dion was recently forced to cancel all of her 2023-2024 European tour dates due to her ongoing battle with a rare neurological disease. The affected dates included 2023 shows in Amsterdam, Paris, Antwerp, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki that were slated to take place from late August to early October, as well as 23 European shows booked for March 6-April 22.

The singer performed the first 52 dates of the Courage tour in North America before the pandemic paused it in March 2020. She was then diagnosed with a rare condition called Stiff Person Syndrome, which her team said causes severe and persistent muscle spasms that have prevented her from performing. In December 2022, Dion pushed all her 2023 dates into 2024, and canceled them entirely before initially vowing to reboot the European portion of the tour this summer.

Freak Hail Storm During Louis Tomlinson’s Red Rocks Show Hospitalizes 7, Injures Dozens

Fans at Louis Tomlinson‘s show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Wednesday (June 21) were sent scrambling for cover when a freak hail storm struck during the former One Director singer’s solo show. According to Denver’s 9 News, seven people were transported to a local hospital for injuries and dozens more were treated at the scene when hail up to the size of tennis balls rained down on the crowd at the Morrison, CO open-air venue.

“Devastated about the show tonight, hope everyone’s ok, I’ll be back!,” Tomlinson tweeted several hours after the incident that initially delayed the start of the show twice before organizers postponed it following a long delay. “Even though we didn’t play the show I felt all of your passion! Send you all love!”

The West Metro Fire Department reported in a tweet that officers were responding to the historic venue after reports of several people hit by hail and injured at the concert, with the extent of injuries unclear at first. A follow-up tweet a short time later confirmed that seven people were hospitalized with non life-threatening injures, with a total of 80-90 more treated on scene with injuries reportedly including cuts, bumps, bruises, welts and broken bones amid scary social media posts showing attendees screaming and fleeing from the punishing ice storm.

A Red Rocks spokesperson told Denver’s Fox 31 that “several inches of hail” had fallen in the seating area, with one concertgoer saying she and her friends had taken shelter in a bathroom stall for more than an hour to avoid hail she described as “golf-ball” sized.

9 News reported that surprised concertgoers were sent scrambling for cover as the severe thunderstorm passed through around 9 p.m., with venue officials delaying the gig and asking fans to take cover and seek shelter around 8 p.m. The all-clear was given a short time later, but then a second delay was announced around 9:15 p.m.; the venue officially postponed the show at 10:25 p.m. due to a storm that reportedly spawned at least one confirmed tornado in the area. At press time there was no information on a make-up date for the gig.

Tomlinson’s next scheduled tour date is at the Wamu Theater in Seattle on Saturday (June 24).

The timing is sweet. RZA”s limited-edition C6 wheel-of-steel arrives as hip-hop celebrates its 50th anniversary, and as Wu-Tang Clan welcomes the 30th anniversary of their landmark debut Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

The special record player, built by Crosley Radio, the Louisville, KY specialist in audio electronics products, is the first in a wave of product releases, from music to food and fashion, say reps.

“Whether it’s discovering new music, trying out new recipes or getting your hands on a limited-edition capsule collection,” reads a statement, each drop “will see RZA explore his passions, showing there truly is no wrong way to express yourself.”

The multihyphenate creative revealed his pact with the Scottish drinks brand by way of a piece to camera, which can be seen in full below.

RZA (real name: Robert Diggs) also has a long list of film and TV credits, including his directorial debut with 2012’s The Man with the Iron Fists, and followup films Love Beats Rhymes (2017) and Cut Throat City (2020). He’s also issued a raft of soundtracks, played his part in the trailblazing horrorcore outfit the Gravediggaz, and in March of this year, delivered a keynote at SXSW.

Earlier this year, RZA, Wu-Tang Clan and Nas announced a North American tour, which will begin this August and visit 25 cities through October. But first, the rap pioneers will play a string of live dates in the U.K. and Europe through July and August.

The Teskey Brothers’ Authentic Sound on ‘The Winding Way’ Takes Them to Glastonbury Festival, the U.S. and Beyond

With their earthy, blues-drenched sound, The Teskey Brothers could be from anywhere, any time.

The siblings, Josh and Sam Teskey, actually hail from Warrandyte, Victoria, a short drive from Melbourne. And right now, their third and latest studio album, The Winding Way, is having an effect on fans everywhere.

The Teskeys’ sound is untouched by modern life, and unlike anything else pumping on radio — guitars, drums, sometimes keys, and Josh’s distinctive vocals.

Produced by Grammy Award-winner Eric J Dubowsky, known for his work with artists such as Flume, Kylie Minogue, and Tones and I, The Winding Way was shaped by lockdowns, growing families, and attention to detail.

That style, as though the tracks were unearthed from a time capsule, was no accident.

The Winding Way, a nod to the group’s old recording studio, on a street called Winding Way in Melbourne, was recorded on tape at Sydney’s Hercules Street Studios.

That old-school approach was something the brothers had tested on earlier, live recordings.

“By simplifying” the process, says Sam Teskey, himself a Grammy-nominated engineer (best engineered album, non-classical) for Run Home Slow, “I think it has actually brought a lot of authenticity and character to the sound. And I think people resonate with that.”

Returning to analog has brought in fans, he tells Billboard, folks who “really dig that sort of music and just enjoy the chillness of it. It’s more relaxed to listen to.”

Those fans in the U.K. and Europe are getting a taste of it right now. The Teskeys have been on the road throughout the warmer northern months, and includes support slots for Bruce Springsteen and Hozier. They’ll tick off another bucket-list item this Sunday (June 25) with a performance on the Other Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

North American concerts follow from early August, with a 13-date national headline tour of Australia and New Zealand kicking off in November.

The Winding Way is the followup to 2019’s Run Home Slow, which peaked at No. 2 on the national chart and won three ARIA Awards, including best group, and their debut from 2017, Half Mile Harvest, both of which were recorded at the now-shuttered Half Mile Harvest Studios in Warrandyte.

As the pandemic forced bands off the road, the Teskeys enjoyed a rare moment to savor when Live at the Forum went to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart — their first leader. And with that feat, a circle completed. The last homegrown live album to climb the summit on the national chart was AC/DC Live back in 1992, a group that cut many seminal records in that audio laboratory on Hercules Street.

Released through Ivy League in ANZ and Glassnote in North America, The Winding Way features the previously-released cuts “Remember The Time,” “London Bridge,” “Take My Heart,” and “Oceans of Emotions”.

It was “unintentional,” notes Josh, ”but the album slowly became all about those ‘growing up’ themes of nostalgia, connection, displacement, and finding a path through the winding way of life. I think we discovered that we’re not kids anymore.”

The Winding Way is out now and can be streamed in full below below. And click here for the Teskey Brothers cover story in the June edition of Rolling Stone AU/NZ.

Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ Blasts to 1 Billion Streams on Spotify

Kate Bush is running up another record.

The English alternative-pop legend clears the one billion streams milestone on Spotify with “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” her mid-1980s classic which enjoyed a second life following its sync to season four of Stranger Things.

By doing so, “Running Up That Hill” becomes the first solo recording by a female artist from that decade to pass one billion streams on the platform.

“A billion streams,” she writes on her official Website. “I have an image of a river that suddenly floods and becomes many, many tributaries — a billion streams — on their way to the sea. Each one of these streams is one of you… Thank you! Thank you so much for sending this song on such an impossibly astonishing journey. I’m blown away.”

Bush is one of just a handful of artists from that era to hit join Spotify’s “Billions” club, whose members include Tears For Fears (“Everybody Wants to Rule The World”), Toto (“Africa”), A-ha (“Take on Me”) and The Police (“Every Breath You Take”).

Powered by Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, Bush’s 1985 hit roared to No. 1 in the U.K., Australia, and the Billboard Global 200 chart for the first time, and lifted to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, for her first career Top 10 appearance in the U.S. With its U.K. chart supremacy, Bush broke three long-standing records.

In a rare interview last year for BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Bush remarked: “I mean, it’s such a great series. I thought that the track would get some attention, but I never imagined that it would be anything like this. It’s so exciting. It’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? The whole world’s gone mad.”

Since “Running” blew up a second time on sales charts around the globe, and reignited interest in the influential singer, Bush was announced to the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame class of 2023.

A$AP Rocky Performs for ‘Beautiful Wife’ Rihanna at Spotify Beach Concert in Paris

After showing up for Pharrell Williams’ Louis Vuitton runway debut during Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were back out in the City of Light on Wednesday night (June 21) too — this time for Rocky’s Spotify Beach performance at the Cannes Lions festival.

Rihanna, who is expecting her second child with Rocky, wore a form-fitting, sheer, diamond-patterned dress over sparkly black lingerie to complement her growing baby bump. In two videos shared on Twitter (watch below), Rihanna can be seen making her way through the crowd as Rocky performs and then stands on a balcony overlooking the Spotify Beach crowd to watch her man onstage.

At one point in his set, Billboard is told Rocky dedicated his 2022 song “D.M.B.” — also called “DAT$ MAH B!*$H” — to his “beautiful wife in the f—ing building. I love her.” There’s no word that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have gotten married, so he’s likely calling Rih his “wife” as a term of affection — though in the video for “D.M.B.,” the visual seemingly ends with Rocky and a red-veiled Rihanna getting married, as red flower petals are showered on the couple.

On Tuesday, the couple made their way out to Paris Fashion Week in coordinated denim outfits to support Pharrell’s new role as creative director of menswear for Louis Vuitton. In February, Williams took over the position previously held by Virgil Abloh, who died in 2021 after a battle with cancer. Tuesday marked Pharrell‘s first runway show in his new role, and the star-studded event was also attended by Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Zendaya and more.

Cardi B Fires Back at Missing Titan Sub Billionaire’s Stepson: ‘You Was Looking For Clout All Along’

Cardi B‘s online feud with the stepson of missing Titanic submersible‘s crewmembers continued on Wednesday (June 21), as the rapper clapped back at his tweets calling her “desperate for attention.”

“The point was the whole world is praying for these people in the submarine and this man son is online shaking d—s for girls off onlyfans and going to Blink 182 concerts,” she replied to billionaire Hamish Harding’s stepson Brian Szasz’s comment. “You was looking for clout all along, nobody knew who you were until you said that was ya stepdad!!! This is why people hate you spoiled brat billionaires yall soo desensitize.”

Cardi’s tweet was in response to Szasz attending a Blink-182 concert in San Diego as the search to locate and rescue his stepfather as well as five other people aboard the submersible continues. In her clapback, she also referenced an NSFW tweet Szasz posted earlier in the day in response to an OnlyFans model’s bikini photo.

The drama between the two began when the “WAP” rapper shared her thoughts about Szasz attending the Blink-182 concert. “You supposed to be at the house sad. You supposed to be crying for me,” she said in an Instagram Story. “You supposed to be right next to the phone waiting to hear any updates about me. You’re supposed to be consoling your mom and s—.”

Szasz responded on Twitter, tagging the rapper and writing, “What a pos trashy celeb. Cardi B trying to get clout off me and my families suffering. I went to a Blink 182 concert for coping rather than sitting at home and watching the news. Shame on you Cardi get some class!”

While he has yet to respond to Cardi’s latest tweet, Szasz — who is white — has since sent out a post using the n-word. “Quit trippin in my hood I can say N—- without the er of course I’m down like that. On the Set!” he wrote, before posting photos of himself at a Black Lives Matter rally.
