With ‘Fukumean,’ Gunna Gets First No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

Gunna claims his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as “Fukumean” advances from the runner-up spot on the list dated July 22. The single, the breakout hit from his album, A Gift & a Curse, leads as it continues to improve in all three metrics that inform the chart – streaming, radio airplay and sales.

As Gunna captures his first champ on the genre chart, he outdoes his previous best of No. 2 for “Pushin P,” with Future and featuring Young Thug, from January 2022. “Fukumean,” likewise, takes the crown on the Hot Rap Songs chart – another first for the rapper – and ascends 8-7 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

“Fukumean,” released on Gunna/Young Stoner Life/300/3EE, traces most of its chart-topping week to a 23.7 million official U.S. stream haul in the week ending July 13, according to Luminate. Notably, the song has increased in streams each week since its release, having started with 15.2 million in its debut frame and risen to 18 million, 20.2 million and now 23.7 million in subsequent weeks. Before “Fukumean,” Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit” was the last Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs No. 1 to begin with three consecutive weeks of streaming gains, from 5.3 million clicks in its first full week, to 9.7 million, 17.3 million and 18.5 million in succeeding frames.

Thanks to its 23.7 million sum in the latest tracking window, “Fukumean” retains its crown for a third week on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs. It likewise repeats, though at No. 4, on the all-genre Streaming Songs list.

In the sales market, “Fukumean” sold 1,000 downloads in the week ending July 13, up 37% from the prior frame. The gain pushes the song 23-16 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales.

For radio airplay, meanwhile, “Fukumean” registers for the first time on a Billboard airplay chart with its No. 40 arrival on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, where it climbed 45% in plays as it begins its official, label-promoted rollout. The track is being serviced to R&B/hip-hop and rhythmic radio stations, and, given its obvious popularity with listeners through streaming metrics, should be a strong contender for the upper reaches of radio ranks soon.

“Fukumean” appears on Gunna’s latest studio album, A Gift & a Curse, released on June 16. The set debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and secured Gunna’s fourth consecutive champ. On the latest list, the set ranks at No. 3.

Hear Exclusive Lightning In a Bottle 2023 Sets From BLOND:ISH, Liquid Stranger, Moore Kismet, Zhu & Wreckno

Lightning In a Bottle celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a characteristically loose party held at Buena Vista Lake near Bakersfield, Calif. this past Memorial Day Weekend.

For those who’ve been going to LiB since its earlier days, the party was a reminder that the camping fest remains one of the most creative, comfortable, friendly and non-corporate on the circuit, with the community vibe that’s always defined the fest persisting today, even as LiB has grown from a gathering of friends to one of the West Coast’s premier festivals. (And in fact, one that attracts attendees from around the world, with the woman who checked us out at Target during a pre-fest supply run saying she’d also just checked out a group who’d just arrived from Spain for the event.)

This year, Lightning In a Bottle was characteristically whimsical, with installations including an enclosed dance area decorated like your best friend’s parents’ basement in 1999 (complete with Titanic playing on VHS), where a DJ played music from a wall of cassette tapes. Here, crowds danced to Billy Idol, Sophie B. Hawkins, INXS and many more until the early hours of the morning. Elsewhere, there was late night karaoke, an 11-year old busting out scorching sax solos during an afternoon jam session, yoga, meditation, tincture-making, booty shaking, swimming and loads of general fun and tomfoolery.

Driving it all, of course, was the music. The lineup has always balanced big names with underground and rising artists (typically leaning heavily into the house and bass realms), and this year was no different, with headliners including Purple Disco Machine, REZZ, SOFI TUKKER and Diplo and a flurry of rising acts playing across Lightning In a Bottle’s many stages.

Transport yourself back to the weekend with these exclusive Lightning In a Bottle 2023 sets from Liquid Stranger, Moore Kismet, Zhu, BLOND:ISH and Wreckno.

Puerto Rican Police Warn Tekashi 6ix9ine That They Can’t Protect Him If He Goes To PR

Looks like Tekashi 6ix9ine’s rattish reputation is following him outside of the continental United States as the Hip-Hop pariah is finding out he’s not welcome out in Puerto Rico.

A few months after having himself a grand old time down in Mexico, Tekashi was readying to take his talents to Puerto Rico only to have police warn him that he should keep his distance from the U.S. commonwealth as heads out there are ready to dig a grave for the “Gummo” rapper. Tekashi was set to take part in Univisión’s Youth Awards at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico today (July 20), but it seems like Tekashi might want to rethink his visit.

According to Elvocero, police asked Univisión to remove the disgraced rapper from their ticket after execs from the Univisión Network asked police to look into the death threats Tekashi was getting. While authorities wouldn’t confirm that the threats were legit or bogus, they did inform them that they wouldn’t be able to protect Tekashi should he decide to travel to Puerto Rico for the Youth Awards. In other words, Tekashi’s on his own out there, b.

Still, police said they will try their best to implement a plan of protection should Tekashi touchdown on the island. What that plan will consist of is anyone’s guess, but we’re not sure Tekashi should risk it, especially after he had some choice words for Fat Joe just last year.

He even took to his IG page to promote his appearance at the Youth Awards yesterday.

Looks like the half-Puerto Rican, half-Mexican rapper has a choice to make: Get that bag in Puerto Rico and possibly end up in a bag or just stay his ass in the U.S.

Like Black Sheep once said, “The choice is yooouurrss!”

What do y’all think? Should Tekashi 6ix9ine risk it for a pay day? Let us know in the comments section below.

Kim Kardashian Explains Why She Refused Kanye West’s Demand She ‘Burn His Stuff’ After Divorce

Kim Kardashian is learning to hold on to the good stuff following her tumultuous divorce from Kanye West. In the Thursday (July 20) episode of The Kardashians, the 42-year-old reality star revealed that she is working on archiving the belongings of her ex-husband, even though the rapper previously requested she “burn his stuff” after their separation.

She shared the revelation on the day Kardashian’s divorce was finalized, which she spent organizing a warehouse of clothing and memorabilia commemorating Ye’s decades-long career. “I’ve kept every single Yeezy,” the Skims mogul said in a confessional. “For me, I think this is me holding on to the Kanye I know.”

“I’m really at peace with it,” she also said, noting she’d “never take back” any of the hardships she and Ye faced during their six-year marriage. “There’s so many amazing things that came out of my marriage and my divorce.”

Kardashian also explained that she’s holding Ye’s belongings close for the sake of their four children — 10-year-old North, 7-year-old Saint, 5-year-old Chicago and 4-year-old Psalm — in the hopes that they’ll appreciate having them to look back on in the future. “This is like my time capsule of the best times,” she told the cameras.

“The reality is life is really different and when you know it can never get back there, that’s what sucks and that’s what’s hard. But my kids will have the best memories and this will be the best tribute for them. I had the best dad in the entire world so I would never want to take that experience away from my kids.”

Also on Thursday’s episode, Kardashian also reflected on her whirlwind relationship with Pete Davidson, whom she dated for about nine months after meeting the comedian while hosting Saturday Night Live. “I definitely jumped into another relationship so fast,” she told sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner. “I got my mind away from stuff and that’s not a way to run from things.”

“It’s better to deal,” she added. “Heal. Deal, heal and then feel.”

Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That in a Small Town’ Condemned as ‘Vile Racist Song’ By Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones

Jason Aldean has continued to take heat over “Try That in a Small Town,” a track some have deemed a pro-gun, pro-violence, “modern lynching” song.” Aldean has vehemently denied those depictions of the tune that challenges those who would “pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store” or “cuss out a cop” to, as the title suggests, try those actions in a small town to “see how far ya make it down the road.” The fall-out from the song released in May, and its even-more controversial new video, however, continued to rage on Wednesday night.

CNN’s Caitlin Collins spoke with Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones — who earlier this year was expelled, then re-instated to the House after leading a gun control protest on the House floor following a school mass shooting in which three children and three adults were killed — who had some unequivocal thoughts on the song.

“As a Tennessee lawmaker, as a youngest black lawmaker in our state, I felt like we had an obligation and a duty to condemn this heinous vile racist song that is really about harkening back to days past,” said Jones, 27. The lawmaker said in his mind it was “no accident” that the video was filmed at the Maury County Courthouse, “where the race riot happened and where as well as the 1927 lynching of a young man who was 18-years-old, Henry Choate, occurred.” Choate was lynched by a mob and hung from the courthouse’s second floor after accusations that he sexually assaulted a white girl; in February 1946, the city that houses the courthouse was the site of a race riot in which two Black men were killed.

Jones said he sees the song as an attempt to normalize “racist, violence, vigilantism and white nationalism,” while “glorifying” a vision of the South that he said the state is trying to move forward from.

The song’s video features footage of an American flag burning, protesters having confrontations with police, looters breaking a display case and thieves robbing a convenience store. Aldean — who in the past has courted controversy by wearing a t-shirt featuring a confederate flag and dressing in blackface as Lil Wayne for Halloween — denied on Tuesday that the song had any ill intent.

“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to a comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests,” Alden wrote in his statement. “These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage- and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music- this one goes too far.”

CMT pulled the video from its rotation after running it for three days, Billboard confirmed, and while Aldean’s wife, Brittany Aldean, came to his defense — as did labelmate Blanco Brown — stars including Sheryl Crow and Margo Price have spoken out against his choice to perform and release the song.

Collins noted that Aldean didn’t write the song, which Jones said features references that he sees as clearly alluding to lynching. “Those lyrics and the lyric that says see how far you make it down the road? I mean, this is a lynching anthem,” he said. “It’s an anthem that reminds me of the stories of young men like Trayvon Martin, Ralph Yarl… Ahmaud Arbery, who were killed by the white vigilantes. I mean, this song is not about small towns, because if it was about small towns, where was Jason Aldean when the Maury County people are fighting for their clean water?… instead he comes to sing a song that harkens back to the vision, that harkens back to fear of outsiders, this racist violence that led my grandparents to leave the small towns fleeing Jim Crow terrorism.”

Jones further criticized the song for what he said was “racist… violent rhetoric” that he believes normalizes that type of speech. “I was expelled challenging gun violence. This song is about this proliferation of guns in our communities, of violence, of taking things into our own hands,” Jones said. “We feel threatened by people because they’re different than us. I mean, this is shameful, and we must condemn it.”

He also noted that Maury County, TN, where the video was filmed, was the site of an incident last week where the KKK left racist recruitment flyers in front of Black churches. “This song is about promoting violence, normalizing violence, particularly white vigilante violence,” Jones said. “And Jason Aldean should be ashamed of himself for promoting the song that seeks our darkest history instead of our better angels in this nation.”

TMZ reported on Thursday (July 20) that Gloria Sweet-Love, the president of the Tennessee chapter of the NAACP, also strongly condemned the song and video, echoing Jones’ assertion that it “clearly” promotes racism and violence.

Ariana Grande Is Dating Her ‘Wicked’ Costar Ethan Slater Following Dalton Gomez Split: Reports

Love is in the air — defying gravity, one could say — on the set of Wicked. According to multiple reports, Ariana Grande is dating her 31-year-old costar Ethan Slater following her recently reported split from husband Dalton Gomez.

Slater, who starred on Broadway as the titular character in the SpongeBob SquarePants musical, is also reportedly split from his wife, singer Lilly Jay, with whom he celebrated his four-year wedding anniversary in November 2022. Both TMZ and People report that he and Grande started dating after both of their previous relationships were over; the “Thank U, Next” singer reportedly called it quits with Gomez in January, though they have yet to announce their split.

Billboard has reached out to reps for Grande and Slater for comment.

Grande plays Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba (aka, the Wicked Witch of the West) in Jon M. Chu’s upcoming pair of live-action films based on the Broadway show Wicked, which itself was inspired by the best-selling novel of the same title by Gregory Maguire. Slater is playing Boq, a munchkin boy who, ironically, harbors a crush on Glinda. He was spotted with Grande and others in a photo posted on Instagram in March by Michelle Yeoh, another Wicked costar.

The reported romance comes just days after reports surfaced that Grande and Gomez, who married in 2021, were separating. One day prior, the pop star was spotted at Wimbledon with Andrew Garfield, Tom Hiddleston and fellow Wicked star Jonathan Bailey, her left hand visibly missing her wedding ring.

The pop star is reportedly on good terms with her soon-to-be ex-husband.

MTA Approves 1st Transit Fare Hike Since 2019

New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority approved the first fare increases for its transit system in four years, citing them as “necessary.”

On Wednesday (July 19), the MTA Board unanimously voted to increase the subway fares from $2.75 to $2.90. The first fare hike in four years also applies to the buses in the citywide system. In addition, fares will also go up by 5% on the tolls at the city’s bridges and tunnels from $6.55 to $6.94. For those without an E-Z Pass, they will see a 10% increase. Those changes will go into effect Aug. 6, while the subway and bus fare increases take effect on Aug. 20.

“We’re making good on this last brick in this amazing edifice that is the restoration of the MTA’s financial stability. It is an important moment,” MTA Chair Janno Lieber said after the decision. “It is not without its downsides because anytime you’re asking people to pay a little more, you know that has consequences.”

Board members declared that the fare increase was “necessary” and “healthy,” as it struggles with a reported $48 billion debt. Deputy chair Jai Patel stated that the increase will help the MTA “keep up with inflation, avert radical fare and toll fluctuations and mitigate impacts on customers by offering a predictable increase schedule.”

Other changes include the express bus fare now being increased to $7, and the seven-day fare going up two dollars to $64. Also, monthly unlimited Metrocards will now be $132 and seven-day unlimited Metrocards will be $34. Metro-North & Long Island Railroad fares will rise 4%. Reduced fares for seniors and others will remain in place.

The board had previously paused talks and plans to increase the fare biannually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which the MTA states led to its current status. The next item will be the congestion pricing plan, which the MTA hopes to enact for vehicles below 60th street in Manhattan by the end of spring next year. It faces opposition from delivery drivers and livery drivers, who protested outside of MTA headquarters yesterday.

The deal is also being punctuated by new music, with Angello releasing “What You Need” — a collaboration with masked duo Wh0 — tomorrow (July 21) via SIZE Records/Astralwerks and Wh0 Plays. The track marks the 250th release of the SIZE Records catalog.

“While I’m excited to honor the legacy of SIZE Records by re-launching the catalog, I’m every bit as thrilled by what the future holds,” Angello tells Billboard. “Teaming with Wh0 to make ‘What You Need’ the inaugural new release on the imprint feels like the perfect way to set the tone for everything we have planned. It’s a new era, new team, new SIZE, new collaborations, new music and lots of it! My gratitude to Astralwerks for taking this journey with us at SIZE!”

The deal marks a return for Angello and Astralwerks, with the label releasing Swedish House Mafia’s compilation albums, 2010’s Until One and 2012’s Until Now, which contained the trio’s all-time hits “One (Your Name)” and “Don’t You Worry Child.”

“SIZE Records is a powerhouse label and home to some of my all-time favorite records,” adds Astralwerks President Toby Andrews. “Being able to work with them as they kick off their 20th anniversary celebrations whilst Astralwerks is celebrating its 30th year feels like the perfect match. In addition to that, the whole team is excited to bring more of Steve’s music to the world and work with him and all his team to elevate the future vision and catalog of the label.”

Steve Angello continues to be managed by Wassim Sal Slaiby and Dina Sahim at SALXCO.
