Inside the Meteoric Rise of Myke Towers’ Global Chart Smash ‘Lala’

In April, Myke Towers landed his third top 10 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart with his fourth studio album, La Vida Es Una, which debuted at No. 9 on the tally. It was Towers’ third straight top 10, an impressive showing despite the fact that it landed below his previous album, 2021’s Lyke Myke, which had debuted at No. 3. The 23-track set also boasted a lighter, more island sound, a departure for the Puerto Rican reggaetón star — a versatile artist who can definitely sing, but who is best known for party reggaetón tracks and hard-hitting lyrics on his trap fare.

La Vida Es Una included collaborations with reggaetón giants like Ozuna, J Balvin and Daddy Yankee, who is featured on the first focus track, “Ulala,” which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart. But the set’s biggest success has come not via a collaboration, but with a solo track — “Lala,” a lilting, romantic reggaetón whose chorus plays over a vocal loop of “Lala, lala, lala,” turning it into an irresistible invitation to dance.

So irresistible, in fact, that this week, a full four months after the album’s release, “Lala” surged from No. 13 to crown Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart (dated July 22), becoming Towers’ first leader on the list.

The song’s rise has been remarkable in its swiftness. “Lala” entered the charts for the first time when it debuted at No. 25 on Latin Rhythm Airplay less than two weeks ago. Last week, it debuted at No. 50 on Hot Latin Songs, at No. 26 on the Billboard Global 200 and at No. 13 on the Billboard Global Ex-U.S. chart. Then, in a single week, it shot to No. 1 on the latter.

How did this happen? “Music discovery has no time frame, and once a track gets into the online conversation it’s our job to jump in and maximize that buzz to turn it into a hit,” says Alejandro Duque, president of Warner Music Latin America, who has oversight of the label’s U.S. Latin and Latin American operations. Duque, who took over the job two years ago after 19 years with Universal, is, at 40, the youngest head of a Latin multinational music company. He’s also been firmly embedded in the digital landscape, an area he’s worked in since the early 2000s when Latin music began its digital transition. That intimate knowledge has allowed him to deeply mine data to bolster hits.

“Everyone has the same data,” he told Billboard last year. “You have to know how to interpret it. Having experience in data tendencies and how consumers behave lets you apply that to marketing and release strategies.”

Duque’s successes interpreting data include Anitta’s “Envolver” and, most recently, Yng Lvcas’ “La Bebe Remix” featuring Peso Pluma, which topped the Latin and Latin Rhythm Airplay charts and has spent 20 weeks on the Global 200 chart, peaking at No. 2. In Towers’ case, the success is particularly sweet because the artist had three previous top 10s on the Global Ex-U.S. chart, all collaborations. To get to the No. 1 spot solo is a feather on Duque’s cap, in tandem with Towers’ joint management team, with Orlando Cepeda and Brandon Silverstein sharing duties through their separate offices. And it earns Duque the title of Billboard’s Executive of the Week.

Here, Duque spoke to Billboard about how this “Lala” of a love song became a global success in a single week.

La Vida es Una came out in March. Why is “Lala” rising to the top four months later?

In mid-June, a micro-influencer posted a CapCut filter with “Lala’s” audio, which kicked things off. That post was organically picked up by a couple of major influencers, which led to even more users making their own creations with it — right now, we’re seeing thousands of creations daily. This was an enormous music discovery opportunity. People weren’t just listening to the snippet on social media, they started searching for the track on streaming platforms and fully engaging with it.

When did you realize “Lala” was a hit in the making?

We see tracks going viral on social media on almost a daily basis, but not all of them lead to an effect on streaming. The way we see it is that TikTok and other social media platforms help generate awareness and buzz around the songs — and it’s all about creating the curiosity that will get people wanting to explore more and listen to the music or watch the music video. Once people are exposed to the song, it becomes about whether they will like it, share it and keep engaging with it. Once we saw “Lala” started translating very quickly from TikTok creations to YouTube views and audio streaming, we knew people were connecting to the song itself and not just the trend.

Are there any specific countries that led the charge?

The micro-influencer that helped kick off the CapCut trend is from Chile, which was one of the key countries that led the initial growth. Spain has been a key country for the song since its release, and it was also one of the first countries to see the growth alongside the trend. After that, we started seeing numbers come up in Colombia, Peru, Mexico and then the U.S. We’re now seeing the track expand to other parts of Europe and gaining new chart positions in countries like Italy and Switzerland. We strategically use data to understand the growth trajectory and which countries we should impact next, as each song has its own trajectory and requires a customized strategy.

What exactly do you do?

Music discovery has no time frame, and once a track gets into the online conversation it’s our job to jump in and maximize that buzz to turn it into a hit. It’s a very similar strategy we used with Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe Remix,” where we identified which countries were connecting with the song first — through consumption data, but also social listening and engagement — and kept expanding our targets until the track hit No. 2 globally.

Did you have a global strategy with the song?

Yes. We always approach key releases with a regional and global strategy, and we rely on data to adjust as we go. Our strategy here started before La Vida Es Una’s release, with teaser and album launch campaigns across countries where Myke has a strong audience, especially the U.S., Latin America and Spain. After release day, we’re constantly monitoring how fans are engaging with the music on different platforms. That’s why we were able to identify what started out as a small trend so quickly and were able to jump into action and maximize the growth as much as possible.

“Lala” is not simply reggaeton; it has a swaying island vibe, too. What does this signal in the evolution of urban Latin music?

For a while, reggaeton was the Latin genre dominating the global charts. This year, we’re seeing different types of Latin songs connecting with a global audience — from songs like “Lala,” which has a more island sound, to “La Bebe Remix,” which is a Mexican reggaeton track reaching No. 2 on Spotify’s Global Chart and the Billboard Global 200. The Argentinian urban movement is also making an impact. We have a massive record with “Los Del Espacio,” a song from Lit Killah with seven other key Argentine artists including Maria Becerra and Tiago PZK. The track reached No. 17 on the Billboard Global 200. People have talked about the explosion in Latin music for years, and rightfully so, but today we are really seeing an unprecedented diversity in the hits coming from across the region.

What comes next for Myke Towers?

We’re very excited, there’s a lot of surprises coming up. From big general market collaborations to a few Latin ones, we continue to focus on building his reach and audience and growing his fan base every day.

Who’s That Girl? Peep The Latest ‘The Marvels’ Trailer

With the MCU teetering on the edge of irrelevancy (sad but true), Marvel is hoping to get back on track with this year’s holiday Marvel installment. And it looks like it can be a bit of a gamble.

Last night, Marvel Studios dropped their latest trailer to their latest superhero adventure, The Marvels, which stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. In the latest trailer we finally get to see who the three-woman team will be taking on as they become familiar with The Annihilators and their Kree General, Dar-Benn.

As powerful as she is, Captain Marvel seems like she could be a bit overmatched when taking on Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) who isn’t just all-powerful but also seems to be the reason why the three superheroes tend to switch places whenever they use their powers. Luckily, the super trio are dedicated to working together to end this latest threat and with the help of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a bunch of space cats, things might end up working out in their favor. The Avengers might also get some new members added to their roster.

Check out the latest trailer for Marvel Studio’s The Marvels below, and let us know if you’ll be checking for this when it hits theaters Nov. 10 in the comments section below.

NewJeans Make Triumphant Return With Second EP ‘Get Up’: Stream It Now

Bunnies, the wait is finally over. NewJeans released its second EP, Get Up, to streaming on Friday (July 21).

The 12-minute project features six songs: “New Jeans,” “Super Shy,” “ETA,” “Cool With You,” “Get Up” and “ASAP.”

“Super Shy,” the first single from the EP, is off to a strong start on the Billboard charts: The track hit No. 2 on the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. rankings following its July 7 arrival. “New Jeans,” the pre-release single done in collaboration with Cartoon Network’s Powerpuff Girls, also debuted on both charts at Nos. 32 and 19, respectively.

The EP — which follows the group’s debut EP New Jeans and single album OMG — comes after the release of two cinematic videos for “Cool With You” starring Squid Game‘s HoYeon Jung and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ Tony Leung on Thursday, and a video in collaboration with Apple for “ETA” on Friday morning. A music video for “ASAP,” the final visual for the album, is slated to premiere on July 26.

The Rock The Bells Festival this year is getting more jam-packed with Hip-Hop’s greatest, as Run DMC and The Roots are now added to the lineup.

On Monday (July 17th), the festival announced the addition of the iconic group from Hollis, Queens, and the dynamic Hip-Hop band out of Philadelphia to the lineup. The Roots will back up LL Cool J and DJ Z-Trip during his set, akin to how they collaborated at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

For Run DMC, their inclusion on the lineup brings them back to their home borough in celebration of the culture through the festival founded by fellow borough native LL Cool J. They also will be headliners at the “Hip Hop 50” concert event at Yankee Stadium on August 11th, considered to be their final show. The stellar lineup also features Rakim, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, De La Soul, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, Redman & Method Man, Roxanne Shante’, Big Daddy Kane, Cold Crush Brothers, MC She Rock, Salt-N-Pepa and other special guests.

The news comes on the heels of Brooklyn’s own Boot Camp Clik announcing a partnership with Rock The Bells, led off by the group’s new single and video “Wotcha Call Strength”. It’s the first release by the collective in 16 years, done in honor of Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary. There will also be an exclusive merch drop at the festival, and Boot Camp Clik will also be on the lineup of performers at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on August 5th.

“In honor and celebration of Hip Hop 50, we felt that the BCC’s catalog of work, contributions, and legacy needed to be recognized properly,” Duck Down Records CEO Drew “Dru-Ha” Friedman said in a statement. “It’s too easy to sit back and say the Hip Hop community should verify you and painstaking to go out and have to remind people with words, so we felt there was no better way to make a statement than to drop a new record with all the original members (RIP to Sean Price).”

Issa Rae Lowkey Shades Ice Spice During ‘Barbie’ Q&A

HipHopWired Featured Video

The Hip-Hop world might be crushing something big on Ice Spice at the moment, but it looks like Issa Rae might be good on the Bronx rapper and what she brings to the table.

During an interview for Vanity Fair in which Rae quizzed her Barbie co-stars about how well they know her, she asked the likes of Margot Robbie, Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera “Who would sing/rap the theme song to my life?” After her co-stars emphasized that it would “obviously” be herself, Rae admitted that she can’t actually rap. Continuing to guess who the artist would be, America Ferrera threw out Ice Spice. Taking in a deep breath and seemingly annoyed with the choice of artist, Rae simply said, “America, no.”

Truth be told, we don’t think Ice Spice’s style nor lyrical content is up to par with what Issa Rae represents and embodies as a self-made woman. Just sayin’. She did point out that she wouldn’t mind artists like Cardi B, Nicki Minaj or Megan Thee Stallion doing the honors, but Ice doesn’t seem to be resonating with the Insecure star.

TikTokers were quick to comment on the reaction from Rae and professed their support for artists like Megan Thee Stallion (makes sense) with many repeating “America, no!” Seriously, America, no.

Whether or not Ice Spice reacts to Issa Rae’s reaction remains to be seen, but we can’t be mad at anyone for having their specific choices in artist they feel represents them the best. That’s just part of the game.

Check out Issa Rae’s Q&A with her Barbie co-stars below and let us know your thoughts on the video in the comments section.

Amazon Music kicked off its 50 & Forever City Sessions summer concert series in New York City on Thursday night (July 20), and it was a vibe. On a relatively cool night for this hot summer, Curren$y and Joey Badass heated the stage for headliner Wale to close out with an energetic set.

It went down at the The Rooftop at Pier 17 in lower Manhattan and the crowd got their money’s worth. Curren$y reps New Orleans but came through fresh in a Lawrence Taylor throwback jersey while Joey Bada$$ was cool and collected in a Yankees jersey with a matching fitted. The opening acts enjoyed dedicated fans who arrived early to hear them run through some of their classic cuts.

Wale was the headliner, and you knew he didn’t come to play since he was rocking a pair of black Tiffany Air Force 1’s. With the New York City skyline as a backdrop (sort of), the DC native made sure to hit records like “Slight Work” and “On Chill” to the delight of a packed-out crowd that paid about $10 per ticket to get in. Good deal.

Also, DJ Clue kept the crowd engaged between sets, hitting modern and classic cuts. The only beef was that Wale was relegated to only about 45 minutes on stage.

Up next is Clipse and Rick Ross on Friday, July 28. Check out some photos from last night’s festivities in the gallery.

Morgan Wallen: Songs You Didn’t Know He Wrote

Morgan Wallen has become a commercial supernova, thanks to hits like “Last Night,” which just logged its 14th week atop the Billboard Hot 100. His two most recent albums — 2021’s Dangerous: The Double Album and 2023’s One Thing at a Time — both entrenched themselves atop the Billboard 200. Dangerous: The Double Album landed at No. 3 on Billboard’s 2022 Year-End Albums list, just behind albums from Bad Bunny and Adele.

On the road, Wallen’s One Thing at a Time tour has been selling out arenas and stadiums across the country, and is slated to visit cities across Canada later this year.

Though he’s a formidable sales and touring force, Wallen is also a songwriter at heart. In addition to writing many of his own hits, Wallen has been a contributor to songs recorded by other artists.

While some of those songs, such as Diplo’s “Heartless,” also feature Wallen is also a featured vocalist, he is a part of the songwriting crew fueling them as well. He’s similarly penned songs recorded by Keith Urban, Jason Aldean and more.

Wallen previously told Billboard of songwriting, “I’m just thankful that I get to write about my life and the things I grew up believing in and valuing. Honest, [country music] is honest.”

He told The Bobby Bones show of his approach to writing, “An idea for a song can spur from a lot of things. For me, it comes a lot from people talking in a conversation. They’ll say something and it’ll click in my head like, ‘That’s a song idea title.’ But most things I write are from experience or something that I’ve seen.”

Here, we look at 10 songs Wallen co-wrote, which other artists recorded.

Chris Stapleton Releases ‘White Horse,’ the First Glimpse at Upcoming Album ‘Higher’

Chris Stapleton is back with a new song and an upcoming new album.

The country star revealed he will release his new album, Higher, on Nov. 10, and revealed a new song from the album, “White Horse,” which Stapleton wrote with Semisonic’s Dan Wilson. (This isn’t the first time the two have collaborated; they previously worked together on Stapleton’s 2015 track “When the Stars Come Out.”)

Not to be confused with Taylor Swift‘s own mournful 2008 tune, Stapleton’s new blistering, bluesy rock anthem warns a lover that she might have a while to wait before he settles down.

“If you want a cowboy on a white horse riding off into the sunset/ If that’s the kinda love you wanna wait for/ Hold on tight, girl, I ain’t there yet,” he sings.

Higher will mark the first project from Stapleton since 2021’s Starting Over.

The new album was produced by Stapleton with Morgane Stapleton and Dave Cobb, and recorded at Nashville’s RCA Studio A. The 14-song album features work from Cobb (acoustic guitar, eclectic guitar), J.T. Cure (bass), Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Derek Mixon (drums), Morgane (background vocals, synthesizer, tambourine) and Lee Pardini (organ, piano).

Stapleton is currently opening for George Strait’s stadium shows, and leading his own headlining All-American Road Show tour. Earlier this year, he showcased his signature burly voice on a global stage, as he performed the national anthem to open the Super Bowl.

Here’s the Higher tracklist:

  1. “What Am I Gonna Do”
  2. “South Dakota”
  3. “Trust”
  4. “It Takes a Woman”
  5. “The Fire”
  6. “Think I’m In Love With You”
  7. “Loving You on My Mind”
  8. “White Horse”
  9. “Higher”
  10. “The Bottom”

Lana Del Rey Works a Shift at a Waffle House in Alabama: See the Photos

How is Lana Del Rey beating summertime sadness this year? By working at a Waffle House in Alabama, serving it up Lana style.

The 38-year-old singer-songwriter was spotted Thursday (July 20) pouring coffee and chatting with customers at a Waffle House location in Florence, Ala., in full employee uniform complete with a “Lana” name tag. During break times, she was able to snap a few photos with fans, blue vape pen in hand.

Neither Lana nor folks on the scene have provided any explanation as to why she was working there. (Billboard has reached out to her reps for comment.) The “Doin’ Time” singer is, however, notorious for including homages to Americana aesthetics and traditions in her music — she even name-checked the city of Florence in her Ocean Blvd. track “Paris, Texas.”

“She was there, wearing a uniform and everything,” Karina Cisneros Juarez, who met the artist at the restaurant, told local news site AL.com. “It was a bit surreal. I just told her how much I loved her music and her work in general. She was super lovely, and incredibly nice.”

“It was great! She was so down to earth and real with us,” Macy Ladner, who also met the musician, told the publication. “Talked with me and my friend about our jobs as teachers, about how she’s working on a new recording.”

Whatever the reason, fans online think the situation is hilarious. One person commented on Twitter, “This is just so unbelievably Lana coded, she is so unserious,” while another joked, “Unfortunately Lana Del Rey was fired today at waffle house for vaping in the walk in refrigerator :(“

This isn’t the first time the Grammy nominee has been spotted in Alabama this week. Pictures and videos have been cropping up online for the past few days of her going about her business in the southern state, getting her nails done in a salon in Birmingham and signing autographs outside of an America’s Thrift Store in Florence.

Tony Bennett’s 15 Biggest Songs on the Billboard Charts

When Tony Bennett died at age 96 on the morning of July 21, 2023, the world lost one of the last vocal titans of the Great American Songbook.

Bennett – who was born Antonio Dominick Benedetto in Long Island, NY back when Calvin Coolidge was president – enjoyed an illustrious career that spanned nine decades. Post World War II, he began singing in nightclubs using the name Joe Bari, eventually changing his name to Tony Bennett after a suggestion from Bob Hope; Bennett’s final performances were with Lady Gaga – with whom he recorded two top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 — in August 2021 at Radio City Music Hall for the One Last Time concerts.

“I just love the fact that in an era where everything’s based on youth, I can communicate with everybody — the young, the middle-aged and the old like me. I’m very content,” Bennett told Billboard in 2016 of his cross-generational appeal. Bennett’s musical career stood out in two important ways – instead of imitating other vocalists, his vocal stylings were influenced rather by jazz instrumentalists; additionally, the man never chased trends, resisting industry efforts to make him update his sound and style with each passing era. That commitment to his art may have caused him to experience a fallow period in the ‘80s, but by the ‘90s, his fealty to the Great American Songbook and his distinctive bel canto singing style helped endear him to new audiences, and he won the prestigious Grammy album of the year in 1995 for his MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett release. His cross-genre, cross-generational appeal was made doubly clear with the release of two duets albums with Lady Gaga in the last decade of his life, both of which reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Below, here are his 15 biggest singles on the Billboard charts.

Tony Bennett’s biggest hits are based on peak positions, and, in the event of a tie, by weeks on the chart. For songs released before 1958, peak positions are determined by the highest position among the three major predecessor pop charts – Best Sellers in Stores, Most Played by Jukeboxes or Most Played by DJs. For songs released after 1958, peak positions are from the Billboard Hot 100, which launched on Aug. 4, 1958.
