The two Black Tennessee lawmakers who were expelled from the state House over a gun control protest have won back their seats.

On Thursday (August 3rd), Representatives Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) and Justin Jones (D-Nashville) both won their special election races handily. Jones defeated the Republican challenger Laura Nelson with 80% of the vote to again represent House District 52 covering most of eastern Nashville. Pearson beat independent Jeff Johnson with 93% of the vote. Jones celebrated with a triumphant post on Twitter late Thursday evening. “Well, Mr. Speaker, the People have spoken. The FIND OUT era of politics is just beginning. See you August 21st for special session,” he wrote.

“I think if we keep running this race, there will be victory after victory after victory,” Pearson said after his win in a statement, thanking Black women for mobilizing voters. “I look forward to heading back to the Tennessee state capitol on Aug. 21 for the special session on gun legislation. We, the People, will march, rally and work to pass legislation.”

Jones and Pearson became nationally known after being expelled from the state House, which is under a Republican majority. The two, along with Rep. Gloria Johnson, led supporters of a protest over the massacre at The Covenant School in Nashville back in March. The lawmakers used a bullhorn as they took to the House floor while protesting for better gun control legislation. The leaders of the House called the actions “an insurrection” and made the move to vote to expel Pearson and Jones, both Black – but not Johnson.

The expulsion led to the lawmakers being dubbed “The Tennessee Three” as they gained support nationwide, with Vice President Kamala Harris vocalizing her support in a speech in Nashville shortly afterward and the White House inviting them for a visit. Jones and Pearson would be swiftly reinstated to their seats by local government officials the following month before the special elections were held. Johnson is believed to be preparing to challenge current Senator Marsha Blackburn for her seat next year.

Per usual, don’t forget to check out these songs and stay tuned for the rest of our August picks in our Spotify playlist, linked below.

Freshest Find: Alina Baraz, “Keep Me In Love”

This week’s Freshest Find is a swooning R&B gem, and Alina Baraz’s first single in a while — detailing a modern take on love that showcases her relatable songwriting. “We pour so much time, love, and energy into ourselves, effortlessly and indefinitely,” she shares in a press release. “The idea [for the song] came from wondering if someone could ever do that for you. It’s easy to fall in love but to keep me in love, I long for that.

midwxst, “warning”

On “warning,” midwxst effortlessly blends rock and rap. The 20-year-old shared the new single ahead of his debut album, E3 (out Sept. 1), which “illustrates his recent internal challenges, but also underscores profound growth and maturity.” “I just want people to understand that I went through a lot of the s–t I am expressing on this album,” he reveals in a press release. “It made me grow and become who I am today. And I wouldn’t trade any of that pain or any of that loss for anything.”

No Guidnce, “Let It Rain”

According to No Guidnce, the boy group is “bringing singing-in-the-rain R&B back” with their new single, “Let It Rain.” The U.K newcomers are proving to be a major force in R&B having only released their first ever song back in March. “Let It Rain” arrives on the heels of their debut EP, Is It a Crime?, and is lined with their thrilling, signature style that’s rooted in rousing nostalgia — similar to that of their counterparts, FLO. The boys also recently headlined their first show in Los Angeles back in July.

LOONY, “Old Friends”

Scarborough singer-songwriter LOONY sees the beauty in a relationship gone wrong. Created during a spontaneous and intimate jam session in Los Angeles, her new single, “Old Friends,” leans into this experience, displaying her soulful vocals and timeless songwriting for a mature but playful song that feels like a one-sided conversation or voicemail. “There’s something really sweet and singular to me about those moments, about those relationships,” LOONY says in statement. “When relationships can often go so ugly, it’s a privilege when it ends to gain an old friend.”

Rob49, Skilla Baby and Tay B, “Mama”

Following his guest feature on “TOPIA TWINS” off Travis Scott’s UTOPIA, Rob49 teamed up with Skilla Baby and Tay B for blistering new single, “Mama.” The New Orleans newcomer’s thick accent and deep, aggressive flow pair well alongside his collaborators who match his energy. “I heard you got a man, but it’s alright mama/ Let’s go to the mall, I’m about to buy you what you like, mama,” Skilla Baby spits.

KayCyy, “My Jeans”

With “My Jeans,” KayCyy is proving that he’s “not no background singer.” Earlier this week, a fan on X (fka Twitter) pointed out that the Kenya-born artist was left uncredited for his vocals on “THANK GOD” off Travis Scott’s UTOPIA. KayCyy responded to the post and proceeded to prove that he can hold his own with the new song. The Minnesota-based artist is also known for his work on Ye’s Donda, though he is gearing up to release his debut album, Who is KayCyy?.

Lucy Park, “All Roads”

With alluring vocals and an infectious dance rhythm, Lucy Park has created the perfect summer track to help close out the season on a high note. Park wanted “All Roads” “to feel like a summer night out in London,” she shares. “The song is sort of a dance back and forth between them. It’s about building up a romance in your head while you are still strangers in real life. This is a really new sound for me and I’m so excited for people to hear it!”

BTS’ Suga Begins Military Enlistment Process

BTSSuga is about to become a military man. BigHit announced on Monday (Aug. 7) that Suga has begun the process initiate his mandatory military service in South Korea.

“We would like to inform our fans that SUGA has initiated the military enlistment process by applying for the termination of his enlistment postponement,” BigHit said in a statement posted to Weverse, promising to keep ARMY informed with any updates.

“We ask you for your continued love and support for SUGA until he completes his military service and safely returns,” the statement concluded. “Our company will spare no effort in providing support for our artist.”

South Korea had initially passed a bill in 2020 that allowed the members of BTS to postpone their mandatory service until they reached age 30. The country’s laws state that citizens are required to enlist between the ages of 18 and 28.

The announcement comes just one day after the K-pop star wrapped up the Asian leg of his Agust D-DAY tour in support of his solo album, D-DAY, which he released under his stage name Agust D. The trek ended with three shows — from Aug. 4 to 6 — at Seoul’s KSPO Dome.

After his performance, Suga appeared on Weverse live to chat with fans. “I came to say hi after my last concert,” he said. After showing off his tattoo at a fan’s request, the artist become a bit emotional when talking about the end of his trek.

“I think I had a fun tour the last couple of months. I really don’t cry,” he said before reflecting on the last decade. “Those past 10 years went by like a film. I started crying from then.”

As his live chat came to an end, he seemed to hint at his upcoming enlistment, though he did not specifically talk about it. “I think it’s a lie if I say ‘soon,’” he told viewers. “Let’s see each other in 2025, OK? Please wait a little bit,” he concluded in his message to ARMY. “2025. See you then!”

BigHit initially announced in October 2022 that the members of BTS — which also includes RM, V, Jin, Jung Kook, J-Hope and Jimin — would be unable to perform together as a whole group until 2025 as the individual members complete their mandated military service. Jin was first to enlist, followed by J-Hope.

Ryan Gosling Is the 15th ‘Mickey Mouse Club’ Cast Member With a Hot 100 Hit: See the Complete List

On the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Aug. 5), Ryan Gosling scored his first appearance, as “I’m Just Ken,” from the new Barbie movie, in which he stars with Margot Robbie, debuted at No. 87.

Notably, the song isn’t Gosling’s first foray into music. He charted once before, with “City of Stars,” from his 2016 film La La Land. His solo version spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Jazz Digital Song Sales chart, while a mix with co-star Emma Stone reached No. 8 on the Hot 100’s Bubbling Under ranking.

But before that, Gosling broke through at age 13 as a member of The Disney Channel’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club revival, which ran for seven seasons (1989-94). He starred in the show’s final two seasons, performing song and dance numbers alongside several future Billboard hitmakers.

In total, four separate iterations of the Mickey Mouse show franchise have aired. The original series, The Mickey Mouse Club, aired on ABC in 1955-59, followed by The New Mickey Mouse Club (syndicated; 1977-79), The All-New Mickey Mouse Club (The Disney Channel; 1989-94) and Club Mickey Mouse (Facebook, Instagram; 2017-18).

Of every Mouseketeer over the show’s four iterations, spanning over 60 years, 15 of have charted songs on the Hot 100. Gosling now becomes the 15th.

Here’s a look at every cast member from every edition of the series to chart a song on the Hot 100, listed chronologically from when they first reached the ranking.

(Honorable mention to Rhona Bennett, who appeared on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in 1991-94 and is currently a member of En Vogue. She joined the R&B group in 2003, after it charted all 14 songs of its Hot 100 hits.)

Jamie Foxx Apologizes To Jewish Community For IG Post, Stars Defend Him

HipHopWired Featured Video

European Premiere of Creed III in London

Jamie Foxx is back in the public eye and using social media to communicate his thoughts and connect with his fans. However, a post the actor and comedian made seemingly offended members of the Jewish community thus sparking an apology.

As reported by TMZ, Jamie Foxx shared a post on his Instagram Story feed that referenced Jesus but never made mention of anyone Jewish. The text read, “THEY KILLED THIS DUDE NAME JESUS WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY’LL DO TO YOU???!” with the hashtags “#fakefriends” and “#fakelove” tacked on the end.

At issue for some is that many have framed Jews as the reason Jesus Christ was crucified but it appears that Foxx was trying to say that if someone as revered as Jesus Christ can be betrayed and harmed by a close friend that it can happen to anyone.

Foxx relented to the pressure and responses which led to him issuing an apology to anyone who felt his post was antisemitic.

Shortly after the apology went live, entertainers such as Winnie Harlow, Kenya Barris, Jay Pharaoh, and others stood behind Foxx as they could ascertain that the famed entertainer was not attacking the Jewish community.

Perhaps Foxx’s words could have been better chosen but all is apparently well as the Anti-Defamation League accepted the actor’s apology.

Dave and Central Cee’s ‘Sprinter’ Snags U.K. Chart Record

“Sprinter” remains unbeaten in U.K. chart races as Dave and Central Cee’s hit clocks nine consecutive weeks at No. 1.

With that feat, “Sprinter” (via Live Yours/Neighbourhood) becomes the longest-reigning U.K. rap single in U.K. chart history. It’s the second time Dave has entered the record books following the surprise release of “Starlight” in 2022, which logged four weeks at the summit, a new benchmark for a solo U.K. rap No. 1.

If “Sprinter” can cross the line first when the next chart is published on Friday, Aug. 11, it would draw level with Miley Cyrus’ 10-week reign with “Flowers,” for the longest-running leader this year.

Central Cee, the London rapper and songwriter, also appears further down the list with “On The Radar Freestyle” (Columbia/OVO Sound), his collaboration with Drake. It’s new at No. 26 for Central Cee’s 19 U.K. top 40 appearance, and Drake’s 82nd.

Barbie retains a firm grip on the Official Charts, as four songs from the hit film’s soundtrack impact the top ten, led by Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” (Interscope) up 3-2 for a new peak. Eilish’s low-key number is currently No. 1 in Australia.

Barbie: The Album cuts “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa (up 4-3); “Barbie World” by Ice Spice, Nicki Minaj and Aqua (up 5-4) and “Speed Drive” Charli XCX (19-9) motor to new chart peaks. With its steep climb on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published Aug. 4, “Speed Drive” becomes Charli’s sixth U.K. top 10 single and her first in eight years as a lead artist, dating back to 2015’s “Doing It” featuring Rita Ora.

Close behind is Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken,” up 25-14, and Lizzo’s “Pink” up 39-27.

With Travis Scott‘s Utopia lording over the albums survey, hip-hop is the undisputed king of the U.K.’s charts this week. Scott also nabs the highest new entry this week on the singles survey with “Meltdown” (Epic). Featuring vocals from Drake, it’s new at No. 10 for Scott’s fifth U.K. top 10 appearance.

Meanwhile, Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’s latest collaboration, “Desire” (Columbia), starts at No. 18, while Post Malone’s “Chemical” enjoys a boost following the release of the U.S. singer and rapper’s fifth studio album, Austin. “Chemical” roars 83- 24, as Austin bows at No. 3 on the albums tally.

Finally,  Sinead O’Connor makes a posthumous return to the top 40 with her signature song, “Nothing Compares 2 U” (Chrysalis), reentering at No. 30 on a 60% gain in combined sales, the Official Charts Company reports.

“Nothing Compares 2 U” logged four weeks at No. 1 following its initial release in 1990. The Irish singer and songwriter died July 26, at the age of 56.

Lana Del Ray Floats 2023 Lollapalooza to a Vivid, Cinematic Close During Hit-Packed Set: Six Best Moments

Lollapalooza glided to a close on Sunday night (Aug.  6) on the wings of two very different California vibes. While the Red Hot Chili Peppers helped shut down the T-Mobile stage at the South end of the mud bog previously known as Grant Park, Lana Del Rey did the honors about a mile up the road on the Bud Light stage, drawing a huge crowd of superfans who’d been waiting all day for their beloved queen of disaster.

Del Rey brought a bit of old Hollywood glamour to what was an otherwise not-at-all glamorous, soggy, cloudy day — the second one of the four-day weekend in Chicago — one that reduced so many cute outfits and carefully curated looks to muddy messes as fans tromped through giant puddles.

In the wind-up to her commanding, mesmerizing 90-minute set, the day featured some fun lead-ins, including Afrojack getting the crowd absolutely mental with a taste of the remix of LDR’s “Summertime Sadness” on the Perry’s EDM stage. Just moments earlier, Joey Bada$$ made his fans equally bonkers by inviting hometown hero Chance the Rapper out for a surprise cameo run through Chance’s “No Problem and the live debut of their collab “Highs & the Lows.”

In another tip to Chi-town hip-hop royalty, both A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Lil Yachty shouted out late Chicago MC Juice WRLD during their sets, with the latter wowing the far-as-the-eye-could-see crowd with a rocking performance that leaned hard into the indie guitar vibes of his Let’s Start Here album.

An hour before LDR cast her soothing spell, Rina Sawayama lit up the Bud Light stage with a decidedly more high-energy vibe, literally cracking a whip during “XS” as she playfully teased her back-up dancers with a variety of S&M gear while rocking a red latex bondage outfit. And in a kind of foreshadowing of LDR’s headlining set, Rina took time out during her show to get her hair done on stage, change shoes and have a sip of Bud Light — she was, after all, on the Bud Light stage. She also slipped in a quip to the audience that seemed to allude to the beer brand’s Dylan Mulvaney flap, reminding them that “trans rights is not just for pride month.”

All of that, however, was just a simple appetizer for the tens of thousands who camped out to see Lana, who took the stage dressed as the world’s loneliest bride, complete with a white wedding mini-dress with a colossal train. While her set was low on the pyrotechnics that marked some of the other headliners over the weekend — from Karol G’s history-making appearance, to the 1975’s cheeky, antics-filled show, Billie Eilish’s eye-popping spectacle and Kendrick Lamar’s intense, stripped-down set — what it lacked in flames it more than made up for in smoldering elegance.

Check out the six best moments from LDR’s set below.

Travis Scott Snags First U.K. No. 1 With ‘Utopia’

Travis Scott is living his best life on the U.K. albums chart as Utopia (via Epic) bows at No. 1.

The U.S. hip-hop star’s fourth studio album debuts at the summit of the Official Chart, published Aug. 4, eclipsing the No. 3 best for his previous album, 2018’s Astroworld.

Utopia, a digital-only release, finishes the week in a flurry. Anne-Marie’s Unhealthy (Atlantic) was the leader at the halfway point, with an advantage of about 200 combined sales. When the chart proper was published last Friday, Unhealthy had dipped to No. 2, some 1,500 chart units behind Utopia.

Unhealthy is the English artist’s third U.K. top 5 album, following 2018’s Speak Your Mind (No. 3) and 2021’s Therapy (No. 2). Despite missing out on the title, Unhealthy becomes the fastest-selling album of 2023 for a U.K. solo female, according to the Official Charts Company, which reports that physical sales account for 84% of its first-week tally.

Utopia, meanwhile, bags the biggest streaming week for any LP so far this year.

Completing an all-new top three is Post Malone’s Austin (Island). That’s the U.S. rapper’s fifth U.K. top 10 album to date after 2016’s Stoney (No. 10), 2018’s Beerbongs & Bentleys (No. 1), 2019’s Hollywood’s Bleeding (No. 1) and 2022’s Twelve Carat Toothache (No. 3).

Further down the list, veteran Birmingham, England band Dexys (formerly Dexys Midnight Runners) sprint to their highest-charting LP in over 30 years with The Feminine Divine (100 Percent Records). Their sixth studio set starts at No. 6 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

You’d have to wind the clock back to 1982 to find a higher chart position for Dexys, when their sophomore effort Too-Rye-Ay, which featured the enduring hit “Come On Eileen,” peaked at No. 2. Kevin Rowland and Co. last landed in the U.K. top 10 with 2016’s Let the Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul, which peaked at No. 10.

Ne-Yo Apologizes for Comments on Parenting and Gender Identity: ‘I Plan to Better Educate Myself on the Topic’

Ne-Yo has issued an apology for the comments he recently made regarding transgender kids.

“After much reflection, I’d like to express my deepest apologies to anyone that I may have hurt with my comments on parenting and gender identity,” the singer wrote on Twitter/X Sunday night (Aug. 6). “I’ve always been an advocate for love and inclusivity in the LGBTQI+ community, so I understand how my comments could’ve been interpreted as insensitive and offensive.”

Ne-Yo continued: “Gender identity is nuanced and I can honestly admit that I plan to better educate myself on the topic, so I can approach future conversations with more empathy.”

“At the end of the day,” he said, “I lead with love and support everyone’s freedom of expression and pursuit of happiness.”

On Saturday, a video of an interview with Gloria Velez for VladTV — in which Ne-Yo and Velez questioned parents who support their children identifying as a different gender than the sex they were assigned at birth — was uploaded to YouTube.

“I just personally come from an era where a man was a man and a woman was a woman,” said Ne-Yo in the interview clip. “And there was two genders, and that’s just how I rocked. You could identify as a goldfish if you feel like, I don’t care. That ain’t my business. It becomes my business when you try to make me play the game with you. I’m not gonna call you a goldfish. But if you wanna be a goldfish, you go be a goldfish. We live in a weird time, man. We do.”

During their conversation he said, “I feel like parents have almost forgotten what the role of a parent is. If your little boy comes to you and says, ‘Daddy, I want to be a girl.’ And you just let him rock with that? He’s 5 … If you let this 5-year-old boy decide to eat candy all day, he’s gonna do that. When did it become a good idea to let a 5-year-old, let a 6-year-old, let a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision for themself? When did that happen? I don’t understand.”

“He can’t drive a car yet, but he can decide his sex?” asked Ne-Yo, who is a father of seven children.

The American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association all agree that gender-affirming care is not dangerous for trans youth, and in most cases, it’s highly beneficial and life-saving.

Later on Saturday Ne-Yo expanded on his thoughts in the comments section of an Instagram post, writing, “1st and foremost, I CONDEMN NO ONE. Who am I to condemn anybody? Your life, your kids, your choice. I was asked a question and I answered it. My opinion is mine. I’m not asking anybody to agree with me nor am I telling you what you can and cannot do with your children. I stated my opinion on a matter and that’s that. Why should I care if my opinion upsets you when you don’t care if yours upsets anyone? Opinions aren’t special. We all have one. People voice them regularly whether they’re asked or not. I was actually asked mine. Agreeing to disagree is not a declaration of war. Y’all do whatever the hell y’all want to. But my feelings on the matter are mine. Same way yours are yours. Meanwhile, I love everybody. Don’t agree with some of y’all’s ideals….but love you no less.”
