Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’ Shuffles Into Lead on U.K. Midweek Chart

For the first time in two-and-a-half months, the U.K.’s singles chart is set to crown a new leader. And, right now, that crown looks like a good fit for Dua Lipa.

The pop superstar leads the midweek chart with “Dance The Night” (via Warner Records), one of several hits from Barbie.

If it swings to the top, up 3-1, “Dance The Night” would be Lipa’s fourth U.K. leader, following “New Rules”; “One Kiss “with Calvin Harris; and “Cold Heart,” her collaboration with Elton John, remixed by PNAU.

Barbie has now passed the US$1 billion milestone at the global box office, and the hit film’s influence can been seen up and down the U.K.’s chart blast. Indeed, it’s an all-Barbie top two, as Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?” slots into second place, less than 1,000 chart units behind “Dance The Night,” the Official Charts Company reports. Other cuts from Barbie: The Album making a midweek mark include “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua (at No. 7); “Speed Drive” by Charli XCX (No. 14); “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling (No. 16); and Lizzo’s “Pink” (No. 34).

Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” (Geffen) completes the midweek podium, at No. 3, while the Grammy-winning pop star is poised to nab the top new entry on the national survey with “Bad Idea Right,” the latest track lifted from her forthcoming sophomore album GUTS. It’s new at No. 5 on the Official Chart Update.

Also set to make a dent on the chart is Fred Again’s “I Adore U” (Atlantic). It’s set to bow at No. 11, for what would be a career-high from the smoking hot Mercury Prize-nominated DJ and producer.

It would appear that Dave and Central Cee’s “Sprinter” (Live Yours/Neighbourhood) has run its final race. The hit song led the national chart for 10 consecutive weeks, but is set to tumble not just from summit, but out of the top 10. Based on sales and streaming data published by the OCC, “Sprinter” will drop to No. 12.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday, Aug. 18.

Liam Gallagher Heading For U.K. No. 1 With ‘Knebworth 22’

Liam Gallagher is approaching higher ground, as Knebworth 22 (via Warner Records) leads the race for the U.K. chart title.

Cut during the British rocker’s two sold-out shows at Knebworth in June last year, where he played to crowds of 170,000, the live collection leads the midweek chart.

If it holds its momentum, Knebworth 22 would give Gallagher his fifth solo No. 1 album, and bragging rights over his brother Noel Gallagher, who boasts four No. 1 albums with his High Flying Birds, and missed out by a fraction on claiming a fifth when Foo Fighters won a tight chart race in June.

Liam Gallagher is no stranger to life in the U.K. chart penthouse. As frontman with Oasis, he led the chart on eight occasions, a consecutive streak that includes all seven of the band’s studio albums, plus the 2010 compilation Time Flies.

Knebworth was, of course, the setting of Oasis’ legendary gigs, played across two nights in August 1996, a moment in time that was captured for the feature-length documentary Knebworth 1996, directed by Jake Scott, and for its companion album which peaked at No. 4 on the U.K. chart in 2021.

As a solo artist, Liam Gallagher has led the national tally with As You Were (2017), Why Me? Why Not (2019), MTV Unplugged (2020) and C’mon You Know (2022).

Dropping in at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update is the HivesThe Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons (Disques Hives), the Swedish rockers’ sixth album and first in more than a decade. Fitzsimmons is on track to become the group’s career peak and third top 10 title, including their 2002 breakthrough Your New Favourite Band, released on Alan McGee’s Poptones, and 2004 followup Tyrannosaurus Hives (Polydor), both peaking at No. 7.

Completing an all-new top three on the latest chart blast is Volcano (Caiola), from electronic act Jungle. Volcano should blast to the duo’s fourth top 10 appearance.

Finally, John Lydon’s’s post-punk outfit Public Image Ltd could snag a first-ever U.K. top 10 with End of the World (PIL Official), set to start at No. 7, while new releases from London rapper Fredo (Unfinished Business via PG Records at No. 11) and English singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan (Balance via CTRL at No. 12) are just outside the top tier.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published Friday, Aug. 18.

Pusha T Talks Black Business Month, Pepsi Dig In Day Block Party & More

2023 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival - Weekend 2 - Day 1

Pusha T is easily one of the sharpest lyricists in Hip-Hop today and knows a thing or two about being an entrepreneur. In a recent interview, King Push shared his thoughts on Black Business Month, the upcoming Pepsi Dig In Day in Washington, D.C., and more.

Pusha T recently sat down to speak with Blavity about Black Business Month, the inaugural  Dig In Day in the heart of Southeast Washington, D.C., and even shared one of his favorite spots to dine in the DMV. The Virginia Beach, Va. native spoke with the outlet about Pepsi Dig In Day, which the brand launched in 2020 to support underrepresented communities and support Black-owned businesses. The event, which takes place this weekend, was at the top of the mind of Pusha T as he shared his thoughts on Dig In Day.

“I’m expecting for it to be a time for music, community and networking just to clash all at once,” Pusha T said. “The actual event space of Anacostia is one of my favorite event spaces. It’s where a lot of events are held where the creative and the business minds of the DMV come together. It can be kind of artsy, kind of techie; it can be whatever the mix calls for that evening. I’m looking for the event to be community building, networking and a good time.”

The Sandlot rests near the Anacostia River in the historic Anacostia community, which continues to see rapid development. The free event will surely bring a good crowd that the businesses nestled along nearby Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue will hopefully benefit from.

Pepsi is working in partnership with The James Beard Foundation, Fig. 8, Okra, Black and Mobile, and a number of other companies and brands. Pepsi has awarded over $2 million in grants to 200 Black-owned businesses and 500 restaurants since the start of the Dig In Day campaign.

“I think prioritizing Black-owned businesses is important because it gives specifically the Black community a sense of hope,” Pusha continued. “It gives us the ‘I can do it’ mentality from the ground up, and I always think that’s good to see. A lot of people where we’re from and some of the areas we’re from and a lot of the positions that we’ve been put in, we may think it’s a heavy lift to start your own. One might think it’s too heavy of a lift, but when they see how many people took that leap of faith and how many people were involved and actually succeeded from sheer blood, sweat and tears, I think it’s good for the community to see and it lets everyone know that we can do it.”

As noted in the interview, Push is familiar with the DMV region and says that African-Asian fusion restaurant Bronze is his top choice with Jerk At Nite, one of the businesses that will serve Dig In Day revelers, being another.

Pusha T will headline the Pepsi Dig In Day Block Party happening this Saturday (August 19) at Sandlot Anacostia in Washington, D.C. Joining Push will be Alex Vaughn, Black Alley, with sound support from DJ Money and DJ Five9.

Zooey Deschanel Engaged to ‘Property Brothers’ Star Jonathan Scott

Zooey Deschanel is engaged to Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott, the couple announced Monday (Aug. 14).

“Forever starts now!” the couple captioned a joint Instagram post, which features a smiling photo of the pair, with the New Girl actress showing off her ring featuring pink and purple stones set in the shape of a flower.

The She & Him singer and HGTV host met and started dating in 2019 after filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series together, along with Scott’s twin brother and co-host Drew Scott and Deschanel’s Bones star sister Emily Deschanel. “From the first moment she walked over to say hello, she had a bounce in her step and an energy about her that made me immediately take notice,” Scott wrote in a Drew + Jonathan Reveal magazine essay published early last year.

In that same magazine story, Scott and Deschanel also invited fans to follow the journey as they renovated the “forever home” they purchased together in May 2020 in Los Angeles.

Deschanel was previously married to Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard from 2009 to 2012 and to film producer Jacob Pechenik from 2015 to 2019. She has two children, daughter Elsie, 8, and son Charlie, 6, with Pechenik. Scott was previously married to Kelsy Ully from 2007 to 2013 and has no children.

Magoo of Timbaland & Magoo Fame Dead at 50

Magoo, who along with rapper/producer Timbaland was behind the late ‘90s hit “Up Jumps Da Boogie,” has died at age 50. News of the artist’s death was initially posted by artist Digital Black, a member of the 1990s R&B/hip-hop group Playa, on his Instagram page.

Magoo’s cause of death has not been revealed.

Born Melvin Barcliff, Magoo and fellow Norfolk native Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley met as teenagers before joining forces as a duo. The pair’s debut album, Welcome to Our World, was released by Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records in 1997, peaking at No. 33 on the Billboard 200 and No. 9 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The set spun off the gold-certified single “Up Jumps Da Boogie,” which sat atop the Hot Rap Songs chart for eight weeks and peaked at No. 4 and No. 12 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Boasting guest appearances by Missy Elliott, Aaliyah and Playa, among others, the platinum-certified Welcome to Our World also rolled out a second top 10 single with “Clock Strikes” (No. 8 on Hot Rap Songs).

Timbaland & Magoo released two more albums as a group, 2001’s Indecent Proposal and 2003’s Under Construction, Part IIIndecent Proposal clocked in at No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 29 on the Billboard 200. Under Construction, Part II reached No. 16 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums; No. 50 on Billboard 200. In summer 2021, Blackground Records signed a distribution deal with Empire under which albums in Blackground’s catalog would become available to streaming services for the first time. In addition to Timbaland & Magoo, that rollout included Aaliyah’s recordings.

While Timbaland gained additional fame as a solo artist, Magoo opted not to take that route. When Billboard interviewed Timbaland and Magoo in 2001 ahead of Indecent Proposal’s arrival, Magoo had this to say about whether he would put out a solo project: “I’ve never seriously thought about doing a solo album. I’ve thought about it in passing — like if Tim decided he wanted to stop rapping. It would be really difficult for me to think about doing a record without him. We’ve been together since 1990, so [being solo] would be weird. Tim and Magoo is more a friendship than it is a group.”

Among artists and collaborators paying tribute to Magoo via Instagram were Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Ginuwine.

Timbaland said in part, “This one hits different long live Melvin aka magoo!!! Tim and Magoo forever; rest easy my king.”

In addition to posting a performance video, Timbaland also gave music fans a recommendation: “You need to hear this Pharrell verse off his 91 demo tape with Timbaland and Magoo. This is so wholesome. They went by S.B.I. (Surrounded By Idiots).”

It was Magoo who gave Elliott her “Misdemeanor” nickname, as she recalled, “We became so cool you supported me from day 1 & you said I’m going to call you Misdemeanor because it’s a crime to have that many talents. So those who don’t know Magoo gave me the name Misdemeanor When we did this song Beep Me 911 & I asked Magoo to get on it & I played this verse over and over & posting this is just heartbreaking I am so lost for words.”

Next to a photo of Magoo with the message “R.I.P. Soldier,” Ginuwine wrote, “This dude, always pushed me …I will miss you maganooo that’s what we called him ….. totally one of the best ever in my eyes always pressing forward I know we didn’t talk alot but the love was and will be always there my brotha … man oh man blessings to the family all of my condolences.”

Idina Menzel Thinks She Should Have Played Lea Michele’s ‘Older Sister’ on ‘Glee’

When Idina Menzel first appeared on Glee in 2010 as Rachel Berry’s mother Shelby Corcoran, she was 38 years old while actress Lea Michele was 23. Menzel is now reflecting on her motherly acting role in a new interview with Stellar Magazine (via The New York Post).

The Wicked actress revealed that, at the time, she had just given birth to her son, Walker — whom she shares with ex-husband Taye Diggs — and that affected her self esteem in the acting world.

“You’re worried you’re not going to work again, and then people hire you to be someone’s mother when you probably should be their older sister,” Menzel recalled to the publication about how she felt on Glee. “It just wasn’t great for the ego.”

However, despite natural body changes affecting how costumes fit her, Menzel says she “sucked it up” because she “was excited to work with [showrunner] Ryan Murphy and be a part of that hit show.”

While she only appeared on 12 episodes of Glee between 2010 and 2013, she quickly became a fan favorite among fans of the show.

Linking up with Tommy Lee Sparta on the island of Jamaica for his clip to “Helicopter,” Trippie and Tommy bask in some Jamaican sun (with hoodies on?!) during the day and get things lit at night with the help of some pyrotechnics.

Speaking of getting lit, Saweetie, YG and Tyga do just that in their clip for “Birthday” where the three artists treat themselves to ice, cake, and some bubbly. So lavishly lit.

Check out the rest of today’s drops and some joints you might’ve missed over the weekend including work from J Hus featuring Burna Boy, Xavr Sosa featuring Backdoor Billz, and more.

Taylor Swift, Beyonce & More: 10 Artists Who Have Changed Offensive Song Lyrics

Ever heard a song and thought, “Wow, that didn’t age well”? So have a few of your favorite artists … about their own music.

There’s Hayley Williams, who’s long been vocal about her aversion to Paramore‘s own “Misery Business,” even choosing to temporarily retire the track from the band’s live shows in spite of it being one of their most successful songs to date, peaking at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. There’s Taylor Swift, who back in the day toed the line on her debut album’s single “Picture to Burn,” which included a since-updated lyric (now infamous among Swifties who enjoy digging up old copies of the album just to see whether it includes the original words) joking about spreading rumors your ex-boyfriend is gay to get revenge.

Swift also recently updated another lyric, this time the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) album cut “Better Than Revenge.” In the years since the original Speak Now was released in October 2010, critics accused Swift of “slut-shaming” her romantic rival in the lyrics, when she sings: “She’s not a saint and she’s not what you think, she’s an actress, whoa/ She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress, whoa.” In the re-recorded version, Swift keeps the first line the same but changes the latter line to: “He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches, whoa.”

Then there’s Lizzo, who rectified the use of a controversial word on her song “Grrrls” in less than three days time. The second single off of her album Special was quickly met with criticism over its use of the ableist term “spaz” — something the “Rumors” star didn’t take lightly. “It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song,” she said in a statement. “Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language. As a fat black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me so I overstand the power words can have (whether intentionally or in my case, unintentionally).

“I’m proud to say there’s a new version of GRRRLS with a lyric change,” she continued. “This is a result of me listening and taking action. As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”

Weeks later, Beyonce faced the same criticism for using the same word in her Renaissance song “Heated.” Days later, her spokesperson told Billboard that the term would be “replaced.”

From sexism to homophobia, ableism to racial prejudice, there are songs containing wording that simply doesn’t jive with the world’s modern perspectives. See how 10 artists — from the above mentioned to the Black Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson and beyond — have taken steps to move their music forward by changing offensive language.
