Quavo Previews ‘Rocket Power’ Solo Album With Surprise ‘Who Wit Me’ Dugout Performance at Braves Game

Quavo served up an unexpected treat for the 40,000 fans who turned out for Tuesday night’s (Aug. 15) Atlanta Braves game against the cellar-dweller New York Yankees. The hometown team — who have a comfortable 10-plus game lead over the Phillies in the NL East — cleared some room on the top of their dugout for the Migos member to preview his upcoming solo album, Rocket Power, which is due out on Friday (Aug. 18).

Wearing a No. 94 jersey with his album title across the shoulders, Quavo bounced back-and-forth across the dugout shouting the chorus of his new single, “Who Wit Me,” at a packed Truist Park, slipping in an ad-lib shout-out to his hometown on the song that honors his late nephew, Migos member TakeOff.

“My nephew just told me he with it/ Even my sister just tole me they with it/ I’m sayin’, I’m sayin’ who with me,” he rapped along to the track. TakeOff (born Kirshnik Khari Ball) was shot and killed during a private party he attended in downtown Houston with his uncle on Nov. 1, 2022.

“If you ready for the Braves let me get a ‘Yes sir!,’” Quavo shouted to the crowd cheering on the team with the best record in the majors. Quavo’s anticipated second solo venture will follow-up his 2018 solo debut, Quavo Huncho, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart; the rapper also teamed up with Travis Scott in 2017 for the joint album Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho.

Speaking about the loss of TakeOff in a recent interview, Quavo said, “I think about him all the time. Sometimes I cry myself to sleep.” He also described how he had to change his work flow during the making of Rocket Power due to the loss. While he would normally cut the hook and the verse and show it to his Migos bandmates — which also includes Offset — “Now he’s [TakeOff] gone and I don’t have nobody to play the music for… I just try to connect with the earth and just try to hear them like that.”

Quavo said the album — which was first teased back in May — is fueled by his late nephew and partner-in-rhyme’s spirit. “All the pain, all the hard times, all the times I cried and all the times I just made music [to cope with loss],” he said. “And to pull up and try to play songs and he’s not there, and I’m just trying to get this fuel from above and this feeling from the sky and just call it Rocket Power.”

Meryl Streep & Ashley Park Team Up for ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Duet ‘Look for the Light’

Meryl Streep and Ashley Park have entered the building in a very musical way.

In the newest episode of Hulu’s hit series Only Murders in the Building, which premiered Tuesday (Aug. 15), Streep and Park team up to perform a song co-written by Sara Bareilles (Waitress) along with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen). The song, “Look for the Light,” is now available for fans to stream on all services.

“It was so easy to say yes to this invitation,” said Bareilles in a press statement.  “I love the delicious unpredictability of collaboration, and this was as joyful and undeniable as they come. I am such a fan of the Only Murders and of Pasek & Paul, so the idea of writing together for the first time, especially to offer something to someone like Meryl Streep truly felt like a dream. Meryl was gentle and focused, and I loved her musicality and her willingness to share her process. Ashley Park’s glorious counter melody was added later, and I got goosebumps the first time I heard it. It truly couldn’t have been a more seamless experience- how lucky am I to be a part of it!”

For Pasek & Paul, Bareilles was a dream collaborator, adding in a statement, “We were so fortunate to be able to create this song for the legendary Meryl Streep alongside her. As longtime fans of Only Murders, Meryl, and Sara, this opportunity was basically the most perfectly algorithmic targeted ad someone could throw our way.

“Getting to shape this song around Meryl’s voice, and working together in the studio and on set, was a dream and we are three very lucky songwriters,” they continued. “Meryl not only amazed us with her usual brilliance and mastery of the craft, but also inspired us with her humility and tireless work ethic. While it is unfair for someone to be so wonderful at everything, it’s a basic human truth that we all must reckon with!”

The song came in an episode in which Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam attempts to pivot his sure-to-tank murder mystery Death Rattle into a raucous musical during one crazy night of writing. While the show’s producers are split on the effort that involves crab men singing about creatures of the night, unconvinced funder Donna Demeo (Linda Edmond) says she’ll give him 24 hours to come up with a slam-dunk showstopper song.

Just before showcasing the song for his producers, Steve Martin’s Charles-Haden Savage tells his friend and fellow sleuth that nobody is into the musical idea. Frustrated and desperate, Short tells Streep’s Loretta that he’s happy to release her from her contract so she can take a newly offered part in the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Grey’s New Orleans Family Burn Unit if she’ll just sing his guaranteed “showstopper” for him, the lilting nanny’s lullaby (aka “Look for the Light.”)

With the cast gathered around him, Short sets up a scene in which the show’s star triplets are crying in the night as their nanny soothes them. To the accompaniment of a melancholy piano, Streep sings, “Hush, little one, let me sing you to sleep/ Moonlight has come, now drift off to a dream/ Sail from the day to the wonders awaiting you/ Out there in the deep.”

As violins swell, the Oscar winner captivates the room with the emotional powerhouse ballad, with Ashley Park’s Kimber unable to resist harmonizing on the sweeping chorus in a tour de force that helps to save the show.

The third season of Only Murders premiered Aug. 8, with stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin returning as true-crime-loving neighbors who get wrapped up in a murder mystery. Back in April, Gomez took to Instagram to tease Streep’s guest appearance by sharing a photo, smiling wide alongside the Oscar-winning icon on the series’ set.

“Well we wrapped season 3 of @onlymurdershulu -I’m not sure I have enough words to explain just how beautiful this season has been. It has been deliriously hilarious, challenging and for me, an absolute dream,” she captioned the photo. “I’ll post more soon. But I’ll I leave it with the woman I adore, look up to and love.”

With the drop of his latest album, Utopia, Travis Scott is back on top of the rap game and though he’s busy performing for his fans at archeological sites, the man is still keeping his fans content with some new work.

Dropping off some new visuals for his album cut “Sirens,” Travis Scott heads overseas where he inspires an entire city to work together and build a human pyramid inside of a cave to reach the opening and get a single girl to utopia. It was pretty cool even if he wasn’t rocking an exclusive pair of Travis Scott Nikes. Sneakerheads stay on alert for those in his videos.

Keeping the party going, Travis dropped another clip in “Modern Jam” where he DJ’s at a club and keeps bodies rockin’ and heads bopping. People with epilepsy might wanna steer clear of this club though. Just sayin.’

Pedro Capó on La Neta Tour, the Success of ‘Calma,’ New Music & More | Billboard News

Latin star Pedro Capó opens up about his latest album, La Neta, going on tour, life after the success of his track “Calma,” new music and more.

Pedro Capo:
Out of the blue, unexpectedly. It wasn’t supposed to be a single. It wasn’t written with that, you know, looking for that either, that one was absolutely special.

Hi, I’m Pedro Capo and this is Billboard News.

Leila Cobo:
Pedro Capo, welcome to Billboard News!

Pedro Capo:
Thank you! Happy to be here! Happy to see you! Thanks for having me!

Leila Cobo:
Likewise. And now you’re back with ‘La Neta’ tour. This is the first tour since the onset of the pandemic for you.

Pedro Capo:
Yeah, yeah. Happy… happy that we finally got here.

Leila Cobo:
Tell us about that tour.

Pedro Capo:
Yes. Well, we started in Spain, we did four cities over there. And it was a huge success. Every city sold out. We’re now going to Argentina, which they all sold out. I feel like ‘La Neta’ is that you know, the little boat that could, and then we’re going to Mexico and we’re going to be coming to the (United) States so we should be here in October. Very excited about that. ‘La Neta’ was a different- is a different sound. And I feel like it marks a road ahead for me.

Leila Cobo:
How so?

Pedro Capo:
Because sonically I was coming out of the whole “Calma” thing, which was beautiful, amazing. “Calma” had, you know, happened at such an interesting moment. The pandemic came, I kind of got lost in my sound for a little bit, which is part of our process, I’d say. And ‘La Neta’ was something that I record and produced and write in its entirety in my house. Very personal.

Chris Daughtry Says Joe Perry Asked Him to Sing for Aerosmith

Chris Daughtry could have been a member of Aerosmith.

The American Idol star joined The Dave Rickards Podcast as a guest recently, per Blabbermouth, where he shared a story in which he was approached by Aerosmith’s Joe Perry during a tough time when it appeared as though frontman Steven Tyler might leave the band. “I get this random call from Joe Perry. Joe Perry and Steven were apparently at odds with each other. It was all in the news; this isn’t private information,” Daughtry recalled, adding that Perry called him.

“I’m, like, ‘First of all, I didn’t know Joe Perry had my number. This is incredible.’ I thought it was a joke at first, but he didn’t even take time to, like, ‘How’re you doing?’ He just went into his reason for calling me,” he continued. “‘And I don’t know what Steven’s doing, but we wanna work. How would you feel about hitting the road with us? You’ve got some cool songs we could play too.’”

Daughtry said he was “speechless” at the offer, ultimately declining. “First of all, I don’t consider myself any caliber of singer that Steven Tyler is as far as I would not be able to tackle those songs the way Steven Tyler tackles him,” he said. “He is irreplaceable, in my mind. Furthermore, Steven Tyler’s alive. This whole fear of pissing off one of my heroes was just looming, and I was, like, ‘There’s no way I can do this, Joe.’”

Amazon Music Raises Prices on Individual & Family Subscription Plans for Prime Members

Amazon Prime members will still get a discount on Amazon Music — but starting today, they’ll have to pay a little more.

According to the Amazon Music website, effective Tuesday (Aug. 15), the company will raise the price of its premium, on-demand music subscription product from $8.99 to $9.99 per month, or $89 to $99 per year, for individual subscribers.

In addition, the price of the Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan, which allows up to six family members per account, will increase from $15.99 to $16.99 per month, or $159 to $169 per year. In both instances, existing customers will pay the new price on their automatic monthly renewal starting Sept. 19. The higher prices will allow Amazon Music “[to] help us bring even more content and features,” its website says.

Amazon Prime costs an additional $14.99 per month and provides free order delivery, access to the Prime Video and Amazon Music streaming services and discounts on products and services, among other benefits.

Amazon last raised the price of Amazon Music Unlimited for Prime members in May 2022, increasing it from $7.99 to $8.99 per month or $79 to $89 per year. With the latest price increase, Prime members still receive a discount equal to $1 a month or $10 annually for Amazon Music Unlimited. The prices for non-Prime subscribers were raised in February to $10.99 per month.

Music streaming subscription prices went mostly untouched for years before increasing at all major services in the last year. In October 2022, Apple raised its prices for Apple Music by $1 per month for individual subscribers, from $9.99 to $10.99 in the United States; and $2 per month for the family plan, from $14.99 to $16.99 per month. At the same time, it also increased the prices of Apple TV+ and Apple One, a bundle that includes Apple Music.

In July, YouTube hiked prices for YouTube Music, while Spotify raised the price of its individual subscription plan from $9.99 to $10.99 in the United States later in the month.

Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Beyoncé & More: 10 Pop Stars With College Courses Dedicated to Them

Wouldn’t it be so much easier to pay attention in class if the subject was your favorite pop star? Imagine taking notes on Taylor Swift lyrics instead of calculus, reviewing flash cards about Kanye West‘s impact on pop culture instead of biology, or taking a quiz on Miley Cyrus‘ fashion statements instead of geography.

For a few lucky students at universities scattered around the world, that’s exactly what they get to do. As a small handful of artists from the past decade or two have transitioned from pop stars to pop icons, more and more academic institutions have introduced courses dedicated to their songwriting skills, cultural significance, and everything in between.

It may not be surprising to see classes on already certified legends — Bob Dylan or The Beatles, for example — listed among a college’s offerings. But now, musicians who are still actively producing mainstream hits such as Harry Styles, Drake and Lana Del Rey are starting to join them in the canon of artists whose careers are considered profound enough to dissect and analyze in an intellectual setting.

For example, Swift in particular sparked a trend of college courses constructed around her in 2022. In fact, one offered at the University of Texas even promised to compare her songbook to the work of famous poets such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Keats and Dickinson. Meanwhile, a surge in Beyoncé-themed classes began sometime in 2016, with professors from Rutgers University, Arizona State and more looking to Queen Bey to contextualize pieces of academic literature on Black feminist studies.

So, grab a pen and paper, and get ready to take notes on the study of modern day musicians. Here are 10 college courses dedicated to pop stars:

Taylor Swift Is the Subject of a New University Course on Social Psychology

Taylor Swift has grown into one of the biggest superstars on the planet — and a new Arizona State University course is digging in on what psychologists can learn from her career.

The course, called Psychology of Taylor Swift — Advanced Topics of Social Psychology, is being offered this fall and will be taught by PhD student Alexandra Wormley. “The course is basically using Taylor Swift as a semester-long example of different phenomena — gossip, relationships, revenge,” she told ASU’s news site, emphasizing that “the class is not a seminar on how much we like or dislike her — we want to be able to learn about psychology.”

She added that she will be connecting themes from Swift’s various albums to psychology, giving 2017’s Reputation as an example. “Taylor’s sixth album, Reputation, is her comeback after disappearing from the spotlight due to conflicts with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. She enacts her revenge on them — and the broader media landscape — by dropping an incredibly successful album along with a stadium tour,” she explained. “The students know this — but do they know why we like revenge? Do they know how we enact revenge? Social psychology can tell us.”

Swift has increasingly been a topic of study at numerous universities across the country. In February 2022, NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music launched its first-ever class on the superstar taught by Rolling Stone writer Brittany Spanos. Last August, the University of Texas at Austin rolled out a new liberal arts course entitled Literary Contests and Contexts — The Taylor Swift Songbook, where the singer-songwriter’s work was studied alongside the likes of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Wyatt, Coleridge, Keats, Dickinson and Plath with “required texts” including four of her most recent albums.

Most recently, Stanford announced a winter quarter course, “All Too Well (10 Week Version),” which promises an “in depth analysis” of the No. 1 hit’s emotive lyrics taught by alum Nona Hungate.
