Myke Towers’ ‘Lala’ Tops Billboard Argentina Hot 100 For a Second Week

Myke Towers’ “Lala” holds steady at No. 1 on the Billboard Argentina Hot 100 chart (dated Aug, 12) for a second week.

The song joins Towers’ two other career rulers, the seven-week champ “Bandido,” with Juhn (2021); and “La Jeepeta,” with Nio García, Anuel AA, Brray and Juanka, which reigned for three weeks in 2020.

Meanwhile, Maria Becerra replaces herself at No. 2 as “Los Del Espacio,” with LIT Killah, FMK, Rusherking, Duki, Emilia, Tiago Pzk and Big One rebounds 3-2, sending her own “Corazón Vacío” to No. 3.

Young Miko’s “Wiggy” picks up Greatest Gainer honors for the week with a 25-place climb, from No. 60 to No. 35.

Finally, the Hot Shot Debut of the week goes to Bhavi, Duki, Milo J and LIT Killah with “Aeróbico” at No. 37.

An ‘Indispensable’ No. 1 For Carin León on Regional Mexican Airplay Chart

Carin León captures his fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart as his latest single, “Indispensable,” climbs 5-1 to lead the Aug. 19-dated ranking.

“Indispensable” is the only song from León’s third studio album Colmillo de Leche to enter Regional Mexican Airplay thus far. The 18-track set, a collage of genres that have influenced the Hermosillo-born singer-songwriter, took him to a top 10 on both Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums, at No. 5 high and No. 10, respectively, on charts dated June 3.

“Indispensable” takes the lead on Regional Mexican Airplay with Greatest Gainer honors, thanks to a 22% gain in audience impressions, to 7.7 million, earned in the U.S. during the Aug. 4-10 according to Luminate. With the leap, the song ejects Yahritza y Su Esencia’s “Frágil,” with Grupo Frontera, from the top slot following a one-week reign. The track falls to No. 5.

With “Indispensable,” León acquires his fourth No. 1 on the radio list and first as a soloist, unaccompanied by any other collaborator. The Mexican artist previously ruled with the six-week champ “Que Vuelvas,” with Grupo Frontera (between Jan.-March), and through a guest spot on Banda MS’s “Ojos Cerrados” for three weeks in 2022. His first ruler, though, arrived with “El Tóxico,” with Grupo Firme, which dominated for two weeks in 2021.

Beyond its Regional Mexican Airplay coronation, “Indispensable” rises from No. 11 to its new No. 6 peak on the overall Latin Airplay survey, giving León his sixth top 10 there.

Gary Young, Original Pavement Drummer, Dies at 70

Gary Young, the original drummer of ’90s indie rockers Pavement, has died at age 70.

“Gary Young passed on today,” Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus posted Thursday (Aug. 17) on X (formerly Twitter). “Gary’s pavement drums were ‘one take and hit record’…. Nailed it so well. rip.”

Matador Records, which released Pavement’s beloved 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted, also paid tribute on X. “We were exceedingly lucky to know the amazing human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young,” the independent label’s account shared along with a black-and-white photo of the artist. “Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates.”

Young was born in Mamaroneck, New York, in May 1953 and started his music career in Stockton, Calif., in the 1980s by booking acts to play the area. Malkmus co-founded Pavement with guitarist Scott Kannberg in Stockton in the late ’80s and the band released its debut EP, Slay Tracks (1933-1969) — recorded at Young’s Louder Than You Think Studio — in January 1989. After two more EP releases in 1990 and 1991, Pavement dropped their first full-length, Slanted and Enchanted, in April 1992.

The seminal project — remembered as one of the most influential albums of the ’90s — peaked at No. 152 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2002 thanks to a 10th-anniversary reissue. In 2017, in recognition of the LP’s 25th anniversary, Billboard published an article with the headline: Pavement’s ‘Slanted and Enchanted’ Turns 25: Why the Smart-Ass, Slacker Masterpiece Is the Definitive Indie Rock Album.

Young was fired from Pavement in 1993 apparently after his antics on tour — largely fueled by a drinking problem, according to his bandmates — came to a boiling point. The drummer reunited with Pavement in 2010 for two shows.

He went on to release three projects with the band Gary Young’s Hospital between 1994 and 2004 and also put out the solo album Malfunction in 2016.

RBD Drops New Song ‘Cerquita De Ti’: Stream It Now

Calling all RBD fans! The Mexican pop group has unleashed their new single “Cerquita De Ti,” which comes just days before kicking off its highly anticipated reunion tour on Aug. 25 in El Paso, Texas.

The track starts off with a melancholic piano note that then meets a subtle dembow beat for an explosive fusion of sounds. The title of the song translates to “close to you,” which perfectly captures RBD’s long-awaited reunion. “So great that we meet again, nobody believed us but we did it. It’s been hard but we’re here … You know I’ll always be close to you,” they sing.

After splitting in 2008, RBD — comprised of AnahíDulce MaríaChristian ChavezMaite Perroni and Christopher von Uckermann — announced their comeback tour in January confirming stadium and arena shows in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil.

“There’re cycles in life and each one of us had to focus on our careers as actors and musicians and that meant we had to give those projects time, energy and a lot of dedication,” Perroni previously told Billboard. “It also allowed each one of us to grow professionally and personally. Now, the time [for the reunion] is perfect because we’re now more conscious, more mature, we’ll enjoy it from a different perspective now as adults.”

Earlier this week, Billboard announced that RBD’s Maite Perroni, Christian Chávez and Christopher von Uckermann will be part of the 2023 Latin Music Week, set to take place Oct. 2-6 at the Faena Forum in Miami. The three RBD members will take center stage to share how their reunion tour came to fruition. This RBD marquee appearance follows another first as this month, all five members will sit down with Billboard and Billboard Español for their first interview as a group. Quavo’s Assistant, Wounded in Shooting That Killed Takeoff, Sues Venue

Quavo‘s assistant, who was one of three people wounded in the November 2022 shooting in Houston that killed Migos rapper Takeoff, filed a lawsuit against the venue Wednesday (Aug. 16) for failing to provide adequate security, screening or emergency assistance before or after the incident.

Joshua Washington, who was working as Quavo’s personal assistant at the time of the tragedy, is suing 810 Billiards and Bowling, its owners and property managers over the incident. He is being represented by civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers of the Strom Law Firm and Audia Jones of the Law Office of Audia Jones.

“810 Houston was warned that they needed extra security. They knew it was a hotspot for violent crime and that an after-hours event like this could turn deadly in a second,” said Sellers in a statement. “But they ignored those warnings and now they have blood on their hands. This shooting was a tragedy. But it was a preventable tragedy.”

According to the lawsuit, defendants 810 Houston, LVA4 Houston Greenstreet, Lionstone Partners, Midway Companies and Cushman & Wakefeld of Texas “provided no screening mechanisms, no after-hours controls or security measures, and no enforcement of rules or industry standards to deter crime against their invitees.” The suit also states that while the shooting was taking place, “no security personnel or personnel from the venue responded or otherwise attempted to deter or end the violence.”

“They had no properly trained security personnel, adequate signage, lighting or cameras. They had no screening to keep out weapons. They didn’t even have a working metal detector,” Jones said in a statement. “This was a powder keg of their own making and folks like Takeoff and Joshua Washington got caught in the explosion.”

Takeoff (real name Kirshnik Khari Ball) was shot and killed in the wee hours of Nov. 1, 2022. He was 28.

Washington, who was an innocent bystander, was shot in his right side by stray bullets, which entered about an inch from his colon. And because the elevators and escalators at the venue “were not operational before, during, or after the event,” he claimed in the suit that he had to run down three flights of stairs while sustaining serious personal injuries, find his own way to the hospital and spend approximately one to two days there while seeking the care of medical professionals. Washington had the bullet from his right side removed, but doctors were unable to remove the bullet fragments. He currently resides in Georgia.

“There was no one. The bullets started flying and no one came to help,” Washington said in a statement. “There were no security guards trying to stop the shooting, no one to help those of us who were hurt, no one at all. They just left us there to die.”

Washington’s lawsuit was filed just two months after Takeoff’s mother, Titania Davenport, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Houston bowling alley.

Representatives for 810 Billiards & Bowling did not respond to Billboard‘s request for comment at press time.

Even with their latest album, Sremm 4 Life, already a few months old, the duo from Mississippi are still on their grind promoting their fourth studio project and looking to keep their name hot going into this summer, the two dropped off a new clip for one of the album’s standout cuts.

Coming through with some new visuals to “Sexy,” Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee show just how confident they are in themselves with Slim doing pushups on top of his Maybach before he and Slim take some thick young women along with them on a boat ride where they twerking produced more waves on the sea than the boat itself. Impressive!

Back in Boston, Millyz keeps on showing and proving he’s got the bars to buy them cars and in his visuals to “Pressure,” Mill showcases the life he’s been living which includes rocking shows, rolling deep through different cities and toasting to life with his closest friends. Props.

Lizzo’s Big Grrrls Show Support for Singer Amid Lawsuit

Lizzo’s Big Grrrls dance crew have officially spoken out in support of the singer amid a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by her former dancers.

“We had the time of our lives on The Special Tour. We have been so honored to share the stage with such amazing talent,” reads the statement posted to the Big Grrrls Instagram page on Thursday (Aug. 17). “The commitment to character and culture taking precedence over every movement and moment has been one of the Greatest lessons and Blessings that we could possibly could ask for.”

The lengthy note, which thanks Lizzo for “shattering limitations and kicking in the door way for the Big Grrrl & Big Boiii Dancers to do what we love,” continues: “You have created a platform where we have been able to parallel our Passion with a purpose! Not only for Us, but for Woman and All people breaking barriers.”

The note is signed from “the Big Grrrls and Big Boiiis,” so it is unclear which of the dancers are included in the supportive message.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this month in Los Angeles by dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez, accuses Lizzo (real name Melissa Jefferson) and her Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc. of a wide range of legal wrongdoing and included dozens of pages of detailed factual allegations.

In one allegation, the lawsuit claims that Lizzo pushed the dancers to attend a sex show in Amsterdam’s famed Red Light District and then pressured them to engage with the performers. The lawsuit also detailed alleged outbursts by Lizzo, including an “excruciating re-audition” in April after she accused the dancers of “drinking alcohol before shows”; one dancer claims the ordeal continued for so long that she wet herself because she feared she would be fired if she left the stage. The case also claims Lizzo repeatedly told dancers “none of their jobs were safe” and raised “thinly veiled concerns” about a dancer’s weight gain.

Lizzo denied the claims in a response shared to Twitter, calling them “false allegations” and “sensationalized stories.”

“I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be these last few days,” Lizzo wrote. “I am very open with my sexuality and expressing myself but I cannot accept or allow people to use that openness to make me out to be something I am not.”

LiveOne To Spin Off PodcastOne, Which Will Trade on Nasdaq Starting Sept. 8

LiveOne will capitalize on the booming podcast industry by spinning off its PodcastOne business as a standalone entity through a dividend to shareholders as of August 28, the company announced Thursday. PodcastOne shares were approved for listing on the Nasdaq exchange on Monday (Aug. 14) and will begin trading under the “PODC” symbol on Sept. 8.

LiveOne, which also owns the music streaming platform Slacker Radio, will issue a dividend of about 19% of PodcastOne shares to its shareholders and retain the remaining roughly 81% of the outstanding shares. LiveOne CEO Robert Ellin said he expects PodcastOne stock will be priced between $8 — the minimum price for Nasdaq-listed stocks — and $12 per share. A third-party valuation of PodcastOne in February put the company at between $230 million and $274 million.

“We will be very aggressive to continue to grow that and it’s a big part of the reason we’re taking the company public,” Ellin said during a conference call for investors on Thursday (Aug. 17). The company currently has a pipeline “of over 10 additional acquisitions that we’re carefully taking a look at,” he added.

PodcastOne has a number of popular podcasters including Adam Carolla, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Jordan Harbinger. It ranked 10th in Podtrac’s publisher ranking for July 2023. Last week, LiveOne obtained the exclusive network distribution and advertising rights to comedian Brendan Schaub’s portfolio of podcasts including The Schaub Show and The Fighter.

PodcastOne already has two important acquisitions in 2023. LiveOne entered into a letter of intent to acquire Kast Media, a podcast network expected to add up to $10 million in annual revenue and boost earnings for PodcastOne. The company also has a binding letter of intent to acquire Guru Fantasy Reports, owner of fantasy football website Fantasy Guru, that Ellie said he expects will close “in the next few weeks.” The all-stock deal is expected to add annual revenue of $2.5 million and over $600,000 in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

PodcastOne had revenue of $10.6 million in the quarter ended June 30, accounting for roughly 38% of LiveOne’s total revenue. Last week, LiveOne raised its guidance for PodcastOne’s full fiscal year revenue from $34 million to a range of $42 million to $47 million.

Separately, LiveOne also plans to make Slacker Radio a standalone, publicly traded entity through a merger with Roth CH Acquisition V Co., a special purpose acquisition company. LiveOne and Roth have signed a letter of intent but no merger date has been announced. LiveOne said it expects Slacker to have a pre-money valuation of $160 million.
