Britney Spears Breaks Silence Amid Sam Asghari Divorce: ‘I Couldn’t Take the Pain Anymore’

Britney Spears is opening up following her split from Sam Asghari.

On Friday night (Aug. 18), the 41-year-old pop superstar took to Instagram to break her silence after the fitness instructor and actor, 29, filed for divorce earlier in the week.

“As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!!” Spears wrote alongside a video of herself dancing to Janet Jackson’s 1993 hit “If.”

“But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!! In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you !!! I’ve been playing it strong for way too long and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that !!! I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel but some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses !!!”

Asghari filed for divorce from the pop star on Wednesday (Aug. 16) in Los Angeles Superior Court, per documents obtained by Billboard. The filing notes that the couple separated on July 28, with Asghari citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for divorce. He also seeks spousal support from Spears.

The “Hold Me Closer” singer and Asghari began dating after they met on the set of her “Slumber Party” music video in 2016. After dating for five years, the couple got engaged in September 2021 and soon tied the knot in a star-studded Los Angeles wedding ceremony in June 2022. Just a month before their wedding, Spears revealed that she suffered a pregnancy loss.

“If I wasn’t my dad’s strong soldier, I would be sent away to places to get fixed by doctors !!! But that’s when I needed family the most !!! You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally … not under conditions !!!!” Spears continued in her Instagram post. “So I will be as strong as I can and do my best !!! And I’m actually doing pretty damn good !!! Anyways have a good day and don’t forget to smile !!!”

A day after filing for divorce, Asghari posted a statement on his Instagram Stories. “After six years of love and commitment to each other, my wife and I have decided to end our journey together,” he wrote. “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. S— happens. Asking for privacy seems ridiculous so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.”

What It Was Like Working at A&M in Its Glory Days: Jerry Moss Remembered by Former GM Jim Guerinot

Jim Guerinot, former general manager of A&M Records, who later managed Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Social Distortion and other bands, worked for A&M co-founder Jerry Moss, who died Wednesday (Aug. 16) at 88, and its president, the late Gil Friesen, for years in the 1980s and 1990s. The retired music executive saluted his former boss in a phone interview.

“We had an artist who was getting to release an album and had a capable manger. I put the whole plan together. When I ran the numbers, I saw that we were going to lose money. I said, ‘I’m not going to get hung,’ so I went to Jerry: ‘Here’s the plan, the manager has signed off.’ He goes, ‘Well, good, what’s your concern?’ I go, ‘Well, we’re going to lose money because the artist will not sell records to make that happen.’ I said, ‘Can I ask you a question? Why would we put this record out?’ He goes, ‘Well, that’s easy. Because it’s an A&M artist.’ It was very much like, ‘The ‘M’ is me, pal. If I want to, I do it.’

And that’s how he slept at night and that’s how he and [Herb Alpert, label co-founder] slept at night.

From time to time when I arrived at work at A&M, I’d pass the main guys’ doors: Herb might be painting, and would invite you in to see what he’s up to to; Gil Friesen, the label president, inevitably would push a book on me and expect a report within days; and Moss wanted to play a few hands of gin. Generally speaking, if you and I play gin, I’m going to beat you. I have friends who played in the World Series of Poker and I win at least half the time. I not only never beat [Moss] at gin, I never even won one hand. It was depressing.

This guy had a vision for the business that was beyond what normal people would see. He walked into a room and saw things we didn’t see. He walked into situations and businesses and saw things we didn’t see.

He knew everybody, for starters. Like, literally, everybody.

Where somebody might see an artist, he would see a network of what that artist represented, and relationships and history. It was just much, much deeper. What he saw wasn’t what I saw. He read people differently. He read people very, very well. He knew people who were going to be honorable and who would not be.”

Bailey Zimmerman & Parmalee Add Country Airplay Top 10s, Luke Combs Doubles Up in Top 3

Bailey Zimmerman posts his third straight career-opening top 10 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 26), as “Religiously” rises 11-9. In the Aug. 11-17 tracking week, the song increased by 8% to 19.1 million audience impressions, according to Luminate.

The song, co-written by the 23-year-old, is from his LP Religiously. The Album., which arrived at its No. 3 high on Top Country Albums in May.

“Religiously” follows Zimmerman’s “Rock and a Hard Place,” which dominated Country Airplay for six weeks beginning in April, and “Fall in Love,” which led for a week last December.

Back ‘In’ Top 10

Parmalee scores its sixth Country Airplay top 10 as “Girl in Mine” climbs 12-10 (17.9 million, up 9%). The song is the group’s first top 10 since “Take My Name,” which reigned for two frames in June 2022.

Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

For the third time since Country Airplay launched in January 1990, an artist claims two songs in the top three. Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” ranks at No. 2 (29.5 million, down 4%), following five weeks at the summit beginning in July, while fellow promoted single “Love You Anyway” pushes 5-3 for a new best (28.2 million, up 10%).

Combs is the first act to earn the achievement as the sole artist on both songs. The other two to realize the feat are Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw.

Bryan’s “Play It Again” and Florida Georgia Line’s “This Is How We Roll,” on which he’s featured, ranked in the top three for three weeks starting in May 2014, after McGraw’s “Bring On the Rain” (with Jo Dee Messina) and his own “The Cowboy in Me” shared space in the top three for two frames in March 2002.

Jon Batiste Talks New LP ‘World Music Radio,’ Calls Himself a ‘Top to Bottom Albums Artist’

Jon Batiste is an albums artist through and through, and spoke with Billboard News to prove it. The Grammy award winner sat down with Billboard in the latest episode of the program to discuss his latest project, World Music Radio, and to divulge his approach to success in light of being a highly decorated artist.

Speaking of World Music Radio — which was released on Friday, Aug. 18 — Batiste revealed that he worked with producer Jon Bellion on the project, which allowed several unintentional themes to make its way into the record.

“Water is a theme in the album. There’s many different themes that recur, and we didn’t even really realize when we were making it, some of the themes were subliminal,” the five-time Grammy winner told Carl Lamarre, Billboard‘s deputy director of R&B/hip-hop. “I was working with the great Jon Bellion…he had this thing for his son for in terms in living life and the world’s crazy and just the idea of self care, being in the world living your life, sometimes you just gotta take pause. And relating that to my life and the thing we’ve been trough and all the stuff we’re trying to create in this album is a mantra.”

Creating a new body of work, following the success of his 2021 effort WE ARE (which earned him four out of his five total Grammys) could seem like a daunting task, but Batiste revealed that the accolades do not factor into his approach to making music.

“I really make bodies of work. The singles are crazy, that’s important, but I’m a top to bottom album artist. I create bodies of work and I create worlds that you immerse yourself in, so that requires people who not only know how to connect to what’s in the culture and reinvent it and make it our own, but also speak to it through my voice and understand that there’s a world that’s being built that’s bigger than just me,” he explained.

Batiste added that instead of the pressure coming from “trying to outdo any public perception or even in awards,” it comes from wanting to “build something that’s even more bespoke, even truer to my artistry that takes everything that I’ve done so far, synthesizes it and adds to it.”

World Music Radio, preceded by singles “Calling Your Name” and “Drink Water,” is available to stream now.

Jon Batiste on Creating New Album ‘World Music Radio,’ Potentially Becoming an EGOT & More | Billboard News

Jon Batiste talks about his creative process for his new album World Music Radio, potentially becoming an EGOT winner during his career and more!

Jon Batiste:
Everything will fall into place for you. So that’s a message to everybody you know, whatever you doing whatever you creating, there’s no pressure. Just be you, walk your path. Hello, I’m Jon Batiste, and this is Billboard News.

Carl Lamarre:
Mr. Batiste, my brother.

Jon Batiste:
Yes.

Carl Lamarre:
How are you feeling?

Jon Batiste:
I feel great. Glad to be here with you, glad to be living.

Carl Lamarre:
We were just talking ahead of the cameras about your new record “Drink Water.” I told you when I first heard it. You know, it felt like a mantra like you said. I was like, “You must have been in the argument. You know, the missues was like, ‘You know, Jon, I don’t like how you’re doing this.’”

Jon Batiste:
Right? Calm down!

Water is the theme in the album. There’s many different themes that recur, and we didn’t even really realize when we were making it — some of the things was subliminal. And you know, I was working with the great Jon Bellion, Long Island — shoutout to Long Island — the great John Bellion had this thing that he had for his son, just in terms of living life and the world’s crazy, and just the idea of self-care and being in the world living your life. Sometimes you got to take a pause. And relating to that in my life and the things we’ve been through and all the stuff that we’ve tried to create in this album is a mantra.

Olivia Rodrigo Plays the Tiniest Snippet of ‘Guts,’ Says Album Has a ‘Lot of Fun Songs’

The countdown for the arrival of Olivia Rodrigo‘s album GUTS continues. To further drum up anticipation for the records’ release, the pop star appeared on Capital FM across the pond in England to briefly chat about what fans can expect from her sophomore release and even play a snippet from one of the tracks.

In order for her track “Vampire” to be played in full, Rodrigo played a game of “How gutsy are you?” which consisted of the show’s host asking her a total of five risky questions. If she denied one of the answers, the run time of her song would be shaved by a few seconds.

“Can you play us a snippet of one of your new songs?” the host asked, to which she obliged with a simple “Yeah.” The 20-year-old whipped out her phone and played a plucky guitar snippet of a yet to be determined track from GUTS, stating, “That’s all you’re gonna get.”

Elsewhere during Rodrigo’s appearance on the show, she answered a fan question regarding what future listeners can expect from the album. “I think there’s a lot of fun songs. I wrote the album with a tour in mind, so I think they’re all songs I wanted people to be able to scream in a crowd,” Rodrigo said. “Hopefully that’s what’s achieved.”

GUTS is scheduled to arrive next month on Sept. 8; the album was preceded by singles “Vampire” — which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — and “bad idea right?” See Rodrigo’s full interview in the video above.

While Hip-Hop heads continue to await that elusive Griselda reunion to finally happen (we losing faith at this point), at least the trio tends to randomly link up two at a time on different cuts and this time around Conway The Machine and Benny The Butcher collaborate to spit on a classic instrumental.

Collaborating for the black-and-white clip to “We Shot Ya,” Conway and Benny politic in a seemingly abandoned building where they set fire to the classic LL Cool J track (“I Shot Ya”) and drop some of the hardest bars this side of the Beast coast. Woulda been dope as f*ck to hear Westside Gunn light up this track too, but we digress.

On a softer side, Rod Wave continues to have dudes in their relationship feelings and in his clip for “Call Your Friends” heads home where the love is to spend time with his seeds and enjoy the life that he’s built for himself. Ain’t mad at that at all.

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Tinashe, That Mexican OT featuring Maxo Kream, and more.

Sexual Abuse Cases Against Michael Jackson’s Companies Revived By Appeals Court

Two men who claim Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children can pursue their lawsuits against companies that were owned by the late singer, a California appeals court ruled Friday (Aug. 18).

Wade Robson and James Safechuck filed their cases a decade ago, claiming that Jackson’s companies (MJJ Productions Inc. and MJJ Ventures Inc.) had a legal duty to protect them from the singer’s alleged abuse.

But Jackson’s companies argued — and a lower court agreed — that they had no such obligation to Robson and Safechuck since Jackson was the sole owner of the companies and they thus lacked the power to control him.

On Friday, the California Court of Appeal for Second District overturned that decision — ruling that the corporate structure did not automatically shield the companies from liability.

“We conclude a corporation that facilitates the sexual abuse of children by one of its employees is not excused from an affirmative duty to protect those children merely because it is solely owned by the perpetrator of the abuse,” the court wrote.

“The corporations say these are ‘idiosyncratic circumstances,’ and perhaps they are. There is certainly no comparable case law to recite,” the court wrote. “But it would be perverse to find no duty based on the corporate defendant having only one shareholder.”

In a statement, Jonathan Steinsapir, lead counsel for MJJ Productions Inc. and MJJ Ventures Inc., said he and his clients were “disappointed” by the decision.

“We remain fully confident that Michael is innocent of these allegations, which are contrary to all credible evidence and independent corroboration, and which were only first made years after Michael’s death by men motivated solely by money,” Steinsapir said. “We trust that the truth will ultimately prevail with Michael’s vindication yet again. Michael Jackson himself said, ‘Lies run sprints, but the truth runs marathons.’

Vince Finaldi, an attorney for Robson and Safechuck, said he and his clients were “pleased but not surprised” that the court had chosen to overturn “incorrect rulings in these cases, which were against California law and would have set a dangerous precedent that endangered children throughout state and country. We eagerly look forward to a trial on the merits.”

Robson’s and Safechuck’s allegations were detailed in the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland. Safechuck claims that Jackson abused him “hundreds of times in various locations”; Robson says Jackson began molesting him in 1990, when he was seven, and continued to do so until he was 14.

Robson sued in May 2013, at the age of 30, and Safechuck followed suit a year later when he was 36.  The pair argued that Jackson’s companies were negligent in failing to stop the alleged abuse, calling them “conspirators, collaborators, facilitators and alter egos” that were “specifically designed to locate, attract, lure and seduce child sexual abuse victims.”

In 2020, a trial court dismissed those claims, ruling that Jackson had “absolute legal control over the entities and everyone employed by them,” meaning those companies and their staffers had “no ability to control Jackson regarding his alleged sexual abuse of plaintiff.”

But in Friday’s decision reversing that ruling, the appeals court said Jackson’s companies were not as powerless as they had been made out to be.

“Any director, employee or other agent of defendants who knew of or suspected abuse could have done something to protect plaintiffs’ welfare: issued warnings, gone to police, confronted Jackson,” the court wrote. “Yes, the likely consequence of protecting plaintiffs would have been termination of employment or removal from the board of directors. But a director or employee’s risk of removal or termination if they acted to protect plaintiffs does not mean they could not act.”

Friday’s ruling revived Robson’s and Safechuck’s lawsuits, but it does not mean they have won the cases. The disputes will now return to a lower court for more litigation and an eventual trial, where the pair will need to prove their allegations against MJJ Productions Inc. and MJJ Ventures Inc.
