Luke Combs Makes History by Claiming Top Two Spots on Country Airplay Chart

Luke Combs’ rolls up his 17th No. 1 – and makes history in the top two – on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Sept. 9), as “Love You Anyway” climbs 2-1 and his former five-week leader “Fast Car” rebounds 3-2.

Combs is the first artist to hold the top two positions on Country Airplay without any other billed acts since the list launched in 1990. Only one other act has taken the two ranks simultaneously at all: On the charts dated May 31 and June 7, 2014, Luke Bryan’s “Play It Again” was No. 1 and Florida Georgia Line’s “This Is How We Roll” featuring Bryan placed at its No. 2 peak.

In the Aug. 25-31 tracking week, “Love You Anyway” increased by 9% to 32 million impressions, according to Luminate. Combs wrote the song with Ray Fulcher and Dan Isbell.

Combs claims another Country Airplay record, as “Love You Anyway” reaches No. 1 after a mere four-week break since “Fast Car,” his update of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 Billboard Hot 100 hit, wrapped its reign. No artist had previously led with different songs in a lead role on both so quickly, as Combs passes Morgan Wallen, whose “You Proof” spent the last of its record 10 weeks at No. 1 this January, while he returned to the top after just a six-week gap with “Thought You Should Know” in February.

Counting featured roles, Tim McGraw wasted no time between No. 1s in March 2002: Jo Dee Messina’s “Bring On the Rain” featuring McGraw led for a week, and his “The Cowboy in Me” supplanted it at the summit the following frame.

Additionally, Combs rules Country Airplay just nine weeks after “Fast Car” topped the tally for the first time – also a record for the quickest turnaround among acts reaching No. 1 with different songs. Multiple artists led with new No. 1s 10 weeks apart (counting from their first weeks on top), most recently Shania Twain, from “You Win My Love” to “No One Needs To Know” in 1996.

Combs’ unprecedented achievements reflect the historically atypical release schedule for his two latest Country Airplay No. 1s, as “Love You Anyway” was intended to be his lone current promoted single but “Fast Car” went viral and they wound up scaling the survey in tandem.

Taste of the Top 10

Meanwhile, Lainey Wilson nets her fifth Country Airplay top 10 as “Watermelon Moonshine” rises 11-10 (19.3 million, up 22%). It follows her feature on HARDY’s “Wait in the Truck,” which peaked at No. 2 in April.

Why Oliver Anthony Likely Won’t Receive Any 2023 CMA Award Nominations

Country artist Oliver Anthony is dominating the charts and political discourse right now with his Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “Rich Men North of Richmond,” but one place fans likely won’t find him is among the 2023 CMA Awards nominations when they are announced next Thursday (Sept. 7).

That’s because the Virginia singer-songwriter, who records as Oliver Anthony Music, and his music either aren’t eligible for inclusion or did not come into enough prominence to be on voters’ minds, as they were marking their ballots by the deadline.

The CMA Awards eligibility period for the 2023 show, which airs live on ABC on Nov. 8, is July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023, meaning that, according to the CMA rules, “singles, albums, music videos and qualified music products for the annual show must have been released or reached peak national prominence during the eligibility period.”

RadioWV put up Anthony’s live performance of “Rich Men North of Richmond” on YouTube Aug. 7, well after the eligibility cutoff.

However, Anthony has been releasing videos on YouTube for nearly a year, so he technically is eligible for several other categories, including male artist and new artist of the year. Practically, though, few were aware of Anthony until after “Rich Men” went viral in mid-August, and the first round of ballots closed July 16. Though the second round, which narrows the initial round of nominees down to the five finalists for each category, ran Aug. 2-Aug. 16, it’s unlikely that Anthony made it onto the first round. Also, unlike the Grammy Awards where artists or their representatives can submit them for contention, the CMA Awards’ first round ballot is based on voters writing in their selections based on the criteria.

Anthony’s early material also would have not been eligible for single of the year even though it was released during the eligibility period. For consideration, the track must have reached the top 10 of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, Hot Country Songs chart or Country Aircheck’s chart for the first time within the eligibility period.

In addition to debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart, “Rich Men” also bowed at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, but it was after the eligibility period closed. “Rich Men” is currently holding on top of both of those charts for a second week. “Rich Men” debuted at No. 45 on the Country Airplay chart last week.

In other words, though Anthony likely missed out for this year’s CMA Awards, he could be a big nominee for the 2024 show.

Social Media Reacts To Tremaine Emory Leaving Supreme

Tremaine Emory parting ways with global streetwear brand Supreme and citing “systemic racism” has led to many surprised reactions online over the move and his reasoning.
The popular designer left his position as creative director of Supreme after only being there for a year and a half, claiming in his resignation letter that “systemic racism was at play within the structure of Supreme.” Emory elaborated further on his decision in an Instagram post, revealing that part of the motivation for him to leave was how the senior management had handled a collaboration with Arthur Jafa, a Black artist whose work at times conveys the violence of slavery. The marketing for that collaboration had been meant to include “the depiction of Black men being hung and the freed slave Gordon pictured with his whip lashes on his back,” (referencing the historical image of the formerly enslaved man “Whipped Peter” )which was dropped by the management.

The situation has caused a stir for many who have followed Tremaine Emory’s career as the founder of Denim Tears and as a former collaborator with the late Virgil Abloh and former friend and collaborator of Ye aka Kanye West before a severe falling out a few months ago. Some reactions online saw the situation as puzzling, questioning Emory’s aim of using imagery linked to slavery.

There were also those who questioned Emory’s choice to post an image on his social media accounts of the book White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard For White People to Talk About Race by Robin DiAngelo—a book on antiracism that many have criticized for actually marginalizing the viewpoints of Black people. Emory recommended that Supreme staff read the book during his tenure.

Others took the opportunity to skewer Supreme for what some consider another example of appropriation by the streetwear brand to appeal to a predominately white audience. Here, we’ve gathered a few of the more notable online reactions from X, formerly known as Twitter, for you to review.

1. Ahmed The Ears

2. Connor Garel

The current Writer In Residence at literary magazine The Walrus raises a query on Emory potentially needing deeper self-reflection.

3. Agostinho

This Twitter user called Emory out for his usage of DiAngelo’s book as a way to solidify his points over resigning.

4. Cameron Keys

5. JerLisa_Nicole

This creative personality called Emory out for the planned use of Jafa’s artwork by Emory as “trauma porn”.

6. Derek Guy

The menswear writer opined on how it was “kind of crazy” to consider how the planned campaign and collaboration would’ve been received if it went ahead.

7. Blessed Spice

This Twitter user took Guy’s point even further and questioned Emory’s reasoning in seemingly wanting to fight for the imagery to be used.

8. Shelton Boyd-Griffith

The former fashion editor of Essence Magazine raised some very good points about Emory and Supreme in a thread, beginning with this post.

Nicki Minaj Talks ‘Last Time I Saw You’ & New Drake Collaboration: ‘The World’s Going to Love the Song’

Nicki Minaj unveiled her new single, “Last Time I Saw You,” on Friday (Sept. 1), and its melancholy energy and plaintive lyrics make the track quite atypical for the woman behind Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits such as “Super Freaky Girl” and “Say So” (with Doja Cat).

“I knew for the album, of course, I would have to discuss certain things or whatever. I just didn’t intend on it being a single. A lot of times people forget that I do a lot of features, and so these are not my actual songs,” she told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1‘s New Music Daily radio show. “These are not songs from my album. And so sometimes people forget the kind of music that I’m able to create because it’s been a long time since they heard an album, and most of the times they get those kind of cuts on the album.”

“I just wanted the next song that I put out to represent my growth,” she said. “Not just as an artist, but as a human being. I’ve experienced so many things that I hadn’t experienced five years ago, and that’s just the truth.”

“Last Time I Saw You” is the latest taste from Minaj’s forthcoming Pink Friday 2. The LP, which is due on Nov. 17, will serve as both the sequel to Minaj’s Billboard 200-topping debut studio album and the follow-up to 2018’s Queen, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and spawned singles including “Chun-Li” and “Good Form.”

“Me even having people anticipate an album … My first album came out in 2010. My first mixtape came out in 2007. So the fact that people even care is a blessing,” she gushed.

While details surrounding the new LP remain relatively scarce, Minaj stressed, “I could have been put this album out … I feel like as a leader in anything, you have to be willing to take those kind of risks that you know that you’re not guaranteed to win at, but it’s going to shift the motherf–king culture because if you ain’t going to do it, who will?”

In her conversation with Lowe, Minaj also touched on how she “definitely cracked the code to something that gives a person peace no matter what’s going on around them” since becoming a mother — a life-changing experience that occurred around the same time her father passed. “The last thing I thought I was going to have to do when I just gave birth to my first child was to start preparing for my father’s funeral,” she revealed.

Also on the horizon is Minaj’s upcoming collaboration with Drake on the Canadian rapper’s forthcoming For All the Dogs album. The collaboration will serve as the first song solely between Minaj and Drake since 2011’s “Make Me Proud,” which peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100.

“I’ll just say I really love the song. I know my fans are going to love the song,” she teased. “I know the world’s going to love the song. And that’s all I will say about that.” Minaj also sicced her Barbz on Drake, saying, “Barbz, make sure y’all let Drizzy Drake know that Pink Friday 2 is coming out Nov. 17 as well. And we are waiting on his contribution.”

Just as the note on her official website suggests, Minaj is in a space of gratitude above all else. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you guys have done. And that’s why I’m putting quality,” she said.

Billboard Explains: The Women of Hip-Hop

Alyssa Caverly:
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, and we’re celebrating the women who changed the genre. It used to be dominated by men, but not anymore. Women have broken down hip-hop barriers and paved the way for the superstars of today.

But who are the female trailblazers? Who’s taking over now? And how has this genre evolved? This is Billboard Explains: The Women of Hip-Hop.

DJ Kool Herc is officially credited for starting the hip- hop movement at a birthday party in the Bronx in 1973. But did you know that a woman played a huge role in those early years? Sylvia Robinson created Sugar Hill gang, whose 1980s track “Rappers Delight” was the first top 40 rap hit on the Hot 100.

As for the first female rapper, we need to give credit to MC Sha-Rock, hip-hop’s first female MC. She started off as a member of the hip-hop crew Funky 4+1. Her style of delivering raps on mixtapes influenced female rappers to come.

Then there was Roxanne Shanté and MC Lyte, who really made a name for themselves early on as well. But the biggest growth happened throughout the ’80s and ’90s. As more female rappers battled their way to the top, including Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Peppa. Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown embraced their sexuality on their terms, while Missy Elliott created some of the most innovative music videos of the decade, all while rocking a unique style.

Miley Cyrus Says She Had ‘Undeniable’ Chemistry With Liam Hemsworth in ‘The Last Song’

Miley Cyrus unveiled part 20 of her TikTok series inspired by her new single, “Used to Be Young,” in which she reflects on pivotal moments in her life and career. In the newest video, posted on Friday (Sept. 1), the singer reacts to a photo of herself kissing ex-husband Liam Hemsworth when they starred together in 2010’s The Last Song.

She explained that in 2008, she needed to do “another feature film for Disney,” but she wanted to do something outside of the Hannah Montana universe. “When the screenplay was written, it was time to audition all the guys that would play Will, my boyfriend in the movie,” she recalls. “We had gotten it down from thousands to the final three, and Liam was a part of that final three.”

Cyrus continued, “I think one of the elements that made that movie feel so special was it was watching two very young people fall in love with each other, which was happening in real time and real life. So, the chemistry was undeniable and that was the beginning of a long, 10-year relationship.”

The 30-year-old singer was briefly married to Hemsworth from December 2018 to August 2019. The former couple’s on-off relationship actually lasted much longer — for nearly a decade — outside the bonds of marriage.

Can LiveOne’s Slacker Beat the Odds in the Increasingly Wobbly SPAC Market?

Streaming service Slacker is looking to become the fifth music company to go public by merging with a special purpose acquisition corporation, or SPAC — and the clock is ticking. Its owner, LiveOne, has signed a letter of intent to combine Slacker, which it estimates will have a valuation of $160 million, with Roth CH Acquisition V Co.

But like many other SPAC deals, Slacker’s merger with Roth has faced challenges. For starters, many of Roth’s shareholders have opted not to take part in the Slacker deal. Roth experienced $93 million in redemptions in the second quarter, according to its latest 10-Q filing, as shareholders opted for a $10 redemption value rather than roll the dice on a music streaming company that expects to finish 2023 with 3.75 million free and paying users. That leaves Roth with $26.4 million to contribute to Slacker once the deal is done.

To shore up support ahead of a merger, Roth entered into non-redemption agreements with shareholders representing 2 million shares. Those shareholders agreed not to redeem public shares and will receive a payment of 4 cents per share per one-month extension, according to a Roth filing with the SEC.

Starting a SPAC gives the founders a limited window to put investors’ money to good use or return the funds to shareholders. Running out of time to close a deal with Slacker, in May, Roth received shareholder approval to extend the merger deadline by up to six months. The extension ends Dec. 4 — barely more than three months away. “It seems [like a] very tight [timeline],” says Megan Penick, an attorney at Michelman & Robinson. “I mean, conceivably they could still complete it. It just seems that they must still be conducting their due diligence and coming to terms on how the deal is going to be structured.”

A SPAC effectively puts the cart before the horse: It raises money through an initial public offering (IPO) before setting about finding an appropriately sized, high-growth company to take public. (Pursuing a target before the IPO, as Digital World Acquisition Corp. did with Donald Trump’s Truth Social, is against the rules.) The target company is spared the long and costly process typically incurred when taking a company public. The SPAC founders get a stake in the post-merger company and investors benefit when the post-merger stock rises above the redemption price. The number of SPAC IPOs jumped from 55 in 2019 to 610 in 2021, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence, while money raised increased from $14 billion in 2019 to $160.8 billion in 2021.

Overall, however, SPACs have failed to live up to their lofty expectations. “Too many SPACs, not enough suitable targets,” says Penick. After 265 SPACs closed mergers in 2021, only 187 did so in 2022. And while there were 100 SPAC deals in the first half of 2023, the value of the deals amounted to just one-tenth of the deals closed in the first half of 2021, according to S&P Global.

Faced with a shortage of good candidates, many SPACs have opted to dissolve and return capital to shareholders. Music Acquisition Corporation, co-founded by former Geffen Records president Neil Jacobson, dissolved in 2022 after raising $230 million in a 2021 IPO. Liberty Media did the same with its SPAC, Liberty Media Acquisition Corp., in November, more than two months before the deadline to complete a deal or return to shareholders the $575 million it raised in an IPO. “Frankly, getting an extension wasn’t worth it, given we had nothing on the table that was attractive enough for us to take [a] look,” said Liberty Media president and CEO Greg Maffei.

Perhaps the biggest problem with SPACs is they haven’t been a good investment for the original investors. Abu Dhabi-based music streamer Anghami has fallen 91% to 89 cents since merging with Vista Media Acquisition Corp. in February 2022. French music streamer Deezer has fallen 76% to 2.06 euros since merging with IPO2 in July 2022. And New York-based publisher and label Reservoir Media has fallen 43% to $5.45 since merging with Roth CH Acquisition II — the same team behind the SPAC that intends to merge with Slacker — in July 2021. All three stocks had a $10/10 euro IPO price.

Worse yet, Alliance Entertainment ended up trading over the counter in February after a high number of redemptions left its partner SPAC, Adara Acquisition Corp, with just $1.7 million to contribute to the merged company — probably not enough to cover investment banking and legal fees for the transaction. That also left Alliance short of the New York Stock Exchange’s float requirements. “The issue of having enough market volume and enough market cap to remain a listed security is a challenge that a lot of SPACs run into,” says Michael Poster, an attorney at Michelman & Robinson. Alliance has dropped 75% to $2.02 since it merged with Adara in February.

Slacker didn’t respond to a request for comment on the deal.

Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion Beat Copyright Lawsuit Over ‘WAP’ and ‘Thot S—’

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have won a court ruling tossing out a lawsuit that accused them of stealing the lyrics to their smash hits “WAP” and “Thot Shit” from an earlier track called “Grab Em by the P—-.”

In a decision issued Tuesday (Aug. 29), a Manhattan federal judge ruled that the lyrics Cardi and Megan were accused of copying in their songs — “p—- so wet” and “n—-s wild’n” — were simply too unoriginal to be covered by copyright law.

“The lyrics over which plaintiff asserts copyright protection are no more than common phrases, employed frequently in popular culture and other Hip-Hop songs,” U.S. District Judge Andrew L. Carter wrote.

“The concept of using ‘p—- so wet’ as a rhetorical device in a song is neither original nor unique to plaintiff,” the judge wrote. “Likewise, defendants have provided examples of at least three songs pre-dating [‘Grab Em’] which use some variation of the phrase ‘n—–s wild’n.’”

The ruling dismissed a lawsuit filed last year by Denise Jones, a rapper who performs under the name Necey X, against Cardi (Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar), Megan (Megan Pete) and Atlantic Records. Jones, who sued without the aid of a lawyer, claimed that the stars chose to “copy and paste” her lyrics into their songs.

But in Tuesday’s decision, Judge Carter said Jones not only lacked valid copyrights in those lyrics but that Cardi and Megan’s own words were not “substantially similar” to those in “Grab Em” — the key requirement for proving copyright infringement.

“Defendants’ lyric, ‘why you in the club with n—-s wild’n,’ poses a question to the rapper (or to the audience), while plaintiff’s lyric refers to the rapper’s effect on a single individual,” the judge wrote. “Thus, the phrase is used in different ways and has different meanings such that an ordinary listener would not identify defendants’ lyric as being appropriated from plaintiff’s song.”

The lawsuit also included additional claims beyond copyright law, including that Cardi and Megan had stalked and harassed Jones. But Judge Carter quickly dispatched those allegations as well.

“Plaintiff makes generalized allegations about fearing for her safety from alleged stalking and harassment by the ‘cartel’ that she equates to the music industry at large, but plaintiff neither identifies any negligent conduct on the part of defendants or any special duty to avoid causing emotional distress,” the judge wrote.

Jones did not return a request for comment on the ruling Friday.

Released in August 2020 by Cardi with guest vocals by Megan, “WAP” was a smash hit, spending four weeks atop the Hot 100. “Thot Shit,” released a year later by Megan, was partly inspired by the backlash that “WAP” had received from conservative critics; it reached No. 16 on the Hot 100.
