‘How Can We Get to the Part of People That Wants to Come Alive?’: Chemical Brothers Want New Album to Make You Feel Something

There were an unlimited number of ways the new Chemical Brothers album might have turned out.

Gathered in the studio, the duo — Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands — presided over a glut of music made during the pandemic. Unsure of what to do with it all, they considered assembling a triple LP, or a quadruple LP, or maybe something more loose and kitchen sink-ish that would highlight the nuances of their creative process.

“I was thinking, ‘Maybe that’ll be cool, to do something really different to how we’ve made our albums before,’” Rowlands tells Billboard over Zoom, “And then in listening to it, it was like, ‘Hm, that’s not so good.’”

So ultimately the pair, friends since their days at the University of Manchester and icons since the release of their groundbreaking 1995 debut Exit Planet Dust — did what they’ve done for the last 30 years and pared it all down to the 11-track collection For That Beautiful Feeling, their 10th studio LP, out Friday (Sept. 8) via Republic Records. With many options for how to Tetris the project together, the guys just let their moods dictate.

“We always want our music to not be a technical exercise, but to reflect how the two of us are feeling,” Simons says. “And I guess, you know, it has been a very strange four years.”

He’s not wrong. Much has gone down on a global scale since the Brothers released their last album, 2019’s No Geography. The world went into lockdown a few weeks after the LP won dance/electronic album of the year at the 2020 Grammys. Amid the pandemic, Rowlands tucked himself away in his Sussex studio and started banging out music, which Simons picked up when it was safe to do so. “It was the longest period we’ve spent apart for a while,” Simons says of that time.

As COVID eventually waned, the war in Ukraine began, living costs spiraled in the U.K. and elsewhere and the climate crisis became increasingly tangible and exponentially scarier. It was, is, a lot of psychic weight for them, and for everyone else. But there were, of course, moments of daily joy. That, altogether, was their mood, and thus that is the album.

For That Beautiful Feeling catapults from ecstasy to dread (“we have no reason to live!” declares track two, “No Reason”), to sadness, to a sort of hectic waking dream state, to hope, to the transcendent title track that closes the LP. In total, the project reflects the anxieties and exhilarations of life on earth in 2023 through the same sort of tightly wound, acid-soaked, elegant, raucous, rock-ish, blissful and often subversive style that’s defined their discography.

This oeuvre contains many moments of grace and soaring beauty (“Swoon,” “The Sunshine Underground,” etc.), and it’s this same spirit of connection, love and hope that ultimately centers and steers the new project. Just listen to Beck assuring “When you feel like nothing really matters/ When you feel alone/ When you feel like all your life is shattered/ And you can’t go home/ I’ll come skipping like a stone” on the momentous “Skipping Like a Stone” and try not to feel at least a little uplifted.

“It can’t but affect what sort of music you want to put out,” Simons says of the global crises in play while the album was made. “But we didn’t necessarily want to dwell in that place. We feel like what we create is perhaps a way of having moments of release and escape. ‘Rousing’ became kind of a touchstone. Obviously there’s reflective music within the album, and there’s kind of quite sad bits, but generally we wanted the tone to be one of, not necessarily celebration, but — how can we get to the the part of people that wants to come alive and wants to not stay in this disenchanted, stagnant place?”

“I mean, but it all starts with the desire of uplifting myself,” adds Rowlands. “That’s also what the title of our album is about… For that moment when you hear something, and it affects you and you just kind of get overwhelmed and overtaken. That moment is always the thing being in the studio or playing live is chasing.”

Anyone who’s seen The Chemical Brothers live knows their efficacy in achieving such a feeling in the live setting, with shows bringing audiences to heavy, cathartic, deliriously joyful and yes, ultimately beautiful places.

For U.S. audiences, though, the opportunity to partake has been fewer and farther between than many of us would prefer, with the Brothers playing only roughly a few U.S. shows over the last several years. This includes a primetime slot at Coachella’s Outdoor Stage this past April, a headlining gig at Portola in San Francisco last fall (“It felt really like a real post-EDM festival,” Rowlands says of the event. “We didn’t naturally feel at home in that EDM world”), along with dates in Santa Barbara, New York, Seattle and the Denver area. While they’re touring heavily in the U.K. this fall, they don’t currently have any U.S. shows on the schedule.

“The costs have gone up so much,” Simons says of touring in the States post-pandemic. “It’s just not really viable at the moment… I’m apologetic to the people who do want to see us that it is increasingly difficult for us to get to America, because we have had the times of our lives playing there.”

While the guys and their team have discussed paring down their show to make touring the U.S. more affordable — “a debate that has raged over Zoom,” says Simons — they don’t necessarily want to risk disappointing people who’ve seen social media clips of their current production, which involves a wall of equipment, a strange and captivating visual show and a pair of giant marching robots.

“[The production] originally came from the fact that we didn’t want to inflict [audiences with] just the two of us awkwardly standing with the synthesizers,” says Simons, “so we wanted a big back job, but it’s just grown and grown, and now we’ve got these 40-foot clowns voicing the words.”

But if U.S. audiences can’t catch the guys live in the near future, access is available through Paused in Cosmic Reflection, a Chemical Brothers biography coming Oct. 26. Written with author and old friend Robin Turner, the book includes interviews with Simons and Rowlands, along with pals including Beck, Wayne Coyne and Noel Gallagher. The book tracks the Brothers since their earliest days, when they carried their own gear to sets and woke up the morning after to finish essays on Chaucer.

“I guess there’s no end date,” Simons says of this retrospective, “but we are nearer to the end of The Chemical Brothers than we are the beginning… It has been good to reflect and remember some history. I guess you’ve got to do it before you start forgetting everything, and I’ve got a really good memory.”

“He remembers, like, every small gig above a barber shop we ever did,” says Rowlands. “Then someone would produce a photograph of it and I’d be like, ‘Oh, gotcha. Maybe we did do that.’ … But one of the things about our band is, we don’t like stopping and reflecting. I always want to move on to the next thing. This book really felt like stopping and reflecting.”

They agree their biggest takeaway from all this contemplation is that, Rowlands says, “Our friendship is at the heart of it. That’s the thing that has enabled us.”

“Without being too trite, there’s a chemistry between us,” adds Simons. “We’ve just grown up together. We know what makes each other tick, what makes each other upset… We like each other, it’s as simple as that.”

In terms of legacy, neither sees an expiration date for what they do. Rowlands, who assures that he’ll always be in the studio making music, is pragmatic: “When no one shows up to your concert or your DJ gig, no one listens to your record, then it’s time.”

Simons says the legacy is simply the body of work they’ve created and continue adding to. Then he thinks about it a bit more and tells me a story about an all-ages gig they recently played in the English countryside.

“After, lots of our friends bought their teenage kids backstage, and they were all wearing Chemical Brothers T-shirts. And then there were little kids, and they had little Chemical Brothers baseball caps.

“Usually,” he continues, “when people come back it’s like ‘Do you want a beer?’ And this time it was like ‘Do you want some chocolate?’ Just seeing 10 or 15 kids who are all children of our friends, and they loved the gig. They lasted till the end. It was cool. That’s the legacy.”

He agrees that it was even, in fact, a beautiful feeling.

Round Hill Shares Spike on Acquisition News — And Hipgnosis Stock Benefits Too

News that Concord plans to buy Round Hill Music Royalty Fund for $1.15 per share sent Round Hill shares soaring 64.4% on Friday (Sept. 8), from $0.6875 to $1.13 per share. They finished the week up 62.6%, leading all music stocks by a wide margin.

The deal, which must be approved by at least 75% of Round Hill’s shareholders at the company’s Oct. 18 general meeting, values the rights in the fund at nearly $469 million. On March 6, an independent valuation from Citron Cooperman put Round Hill’s economic net asset value at $519.6 million, according to the company’s 2022 annual report. That puts Concord’s bid at a 9.7% discount to economic NAV — a vast improvement from the 46% discount the stock had been trading at before the deal was announced.

Round Hill competitor Hipgnosis Songs Fund was also a beneficiary of Concord’s announcement. Shares of Hipgnosis rose 15.7% to 0.923 pounds ($1.15) on Friday, bringing the stock’s one-week gain to 16.8%. Hipgnosis shares have been trading at a steep discount to the company’s net asset value — a measure of the company’s catalog, less liabilities — and hadn’t closed above 0.923 pounds since Sept. 27, 2022. The fact that Concord found a buyer at a price close to its NAV could have signaled to Hipgnosis investors that its shares should be trading closer to its NAV. Some Hipgnosis investors may have also believed that, like the Concord deal, Hipgnosis could also find a suitor that would bid close to the NAV.

Round Hill and Hipgnosis were — by far — the biggest gainers of the week. Overall, the 21-stock Billboard Global Music Index dropped 0.8% to 1,348.41. Year-to-date, the index has gained 15.5%.

No other music stocks had a double-digit gain, and just six others finished the week in positive territory. Twelve stocks lost ground this week and one stock, music streamer Anghami, was unchanged. French music streamer Deezer gained 6.8% and was probably helped by its announcement of a partnership with Universal Music Group to adopt a new system for calculating streaming royalties. Universal Music Group shares improved 3.8% to 23.52 euros ($25.20).

Stocks were down around the world this week. In the United States, the S&P 500 fell 1.3% and the Nasdaq composite dropped 1.9%. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index lost 0.6%. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 was a bright spot with a slight 0.2% gain.

With the help of Round Hill and Hipgnosis, the eight stocks in the record labels and publishing category on the Billboard Global Music Index had an average gain of 10.3%. The other categories saw losses; four live music stocks had a 0.9% average decline, six streaming stocks dropped an average of 3.9% and three radio stocks had a 4.7% average decline.

LiveOne shares fell 10.4% on Friday following the company’s spin-off of its PodcastOne segment on the Nasdaq exchange. That brought its shares’ one-week loss to 21.8%. LiveOne distributed about 19% of PodcastOne shares to LiveOne shareholders of record as of Sept. 5, but the podcast company’s trading debut got off to a rocky start on Friday. Trading under the ticker PODC, shares of PodcastOne owner and operater Courtside Group fell 45.1% to $4.39 from a starting price of $8 per share.

Zach Bryan Rules 8 Songwriter & Producer Charts, Thanks to New Album

Zach Bryan has had a massive week on Billboard’s charts (dated Sept. 9), thanks to the arrival of his new self-titled LP.

Zach Bryan launches atop the Billboard 200, Top Country Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts with 200,000 equivalent album units earned Aug 25-31, according to Luminate.

Concurrently, the collection’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs, Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs – becoming the first track ever to top all those tallies.

All 16 songs from the set storm the Hot 100, and genre-specific charts for country and rock/alternative, helping Bryan hit No. 1 on four songwriter charts and four producer charts.

Here’s a recap of all the songwriter and producer charts on which Bryan is No. 1:

Hot 100 Songwriters (1st week at No. 1)
Hot 100 Producers (1st week at No. 1)
Country Songwriters (39th week at No. 1)
Country Producers (1st week at No. 1)
Rock & Alternative Songwriters (49th week at No. 1)
Rock & Alternative Producers (1st week at No. 1)
Rock Songwriters (49th week at No. 1)
Rock Producers (1st week at No. 1)

Further, here is a recap of Bryan’s entries on the latest Hot 100:

No. 1, “I Remember Everything,” feat. Kacey Musgraves
No. 14, “Hey Driver,” feat. The War and Treaty
No. 17, “Spotless,” feat. The Lumineers
No. 18, “East Side of Sorrow”
No. 20, “Tourniquet”
No. 22, “Overtime”
No. 23, “Summertime’s Close”
No. 24, “Fear and Friday’s”
No. 29, “Ticking”
No. 31, “El Dorado”
No. 37, “Holy Roller,” feat. Sierra Ferrell
No. 38, “Smaller Acts”
No. 39, “Fear and Friday’s (Poem)”
No. 41, “Jake’s Piano – Long Island”
No. 44, “Tradesman”
No. 47, “Oklahoman Son”
No. 76, “Dawns,” feat. Maggie Rogers (holds in place; peaked at No. 42 in February)
No. 88, “Oklahoma Smoke Show” (down from its No. 81 peak)

Bryan is the sole credited producer on all 16 songs on the new album (as well as “Dawns,” not on the set). He’s also the only credited songwriter on 14 songs on the LP (as well as “Oklahoma Smoke Show,” likewise not on the album). The only track above on which he is not billed as a producer is “Oklahoma Smoke Show,” which is credited to Eddie Spears.

Bryan is listed as a co-writer on “I Remember Everything” (with Musgraves), “Spotless” (with The Lumineers’ Wesley Keith Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites) and “Dawns” (with Rogers).

Bryan is just the third person to simultaneously top the Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts this year, after Taylor Swift (among eight total weeks leading the lists together) and Travis Scott.

Billboard launched the Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts, as well as genre-specific rankings for country, rock & alternative, R&B/hip-hop, R&B, rap, Latin, Christian, gospel and dance/electronic, in June 2019, while alternative and hard rock joined in 2020, along with seasonal holiday rankings in 2022. The charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot 100. The genre-based songwriter and producer charts follow the same methodology based on corresponding “Hot”-named genre charts. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

The full Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts and full genre rankings can be found on Billboard.com.

Matt Rife Comedy Special ‘Natural Selection’ Coming to Netflix

Missed out on tickets to Matt Rife‘s ProbleMATTic World Tour? Fans are in luck, as Netflix announced Friday (Sept. 8) that the comedian is getting his own hourlong special on the platform titled Matt Rife: Natural Selection, set to air later this year.

The special will be filmed during the Sept. 22 & 23 stops of his tour at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Natural Selection marks Rife’s first project to be picked up by a streamer and follows previous specials Only Fans and Matthew Steven Rife, both released via his YouTube channel in 2022 and this past April, respectively.

In addition to the announcement, Netflix also celebrated the 27-year-old’s birthday, coming up this Sunday, with a billboard placed outside The Laugh Factory in L.A. Rife posed in front of the billboard for a photo, which Netflix shared to Instagram on Friday.

Speaking with Deadline, Rife hinted at what fans of his comedy can expect from Natural Selection, which Netflix said will see him leaving “no topic untouched — from crystals to social media trolls — and no audience member spared.”

“The first half of it is so silly and ridiculous and fun, and the second half is some stuff I actually got to pour some thought into, which, if you’ve watched either of my previous specials, I kind of like to end the last of it with something people can think about, and put some thought behind, and give some real perspective on something I genuinely am passionate about, as well as making it funny with a fun story,” he told Deadline. “I’d say it’s my most fun hour yet. I think people are really going to like it. There’s something in there for everybody.”

HHW Gaming: Lil Uzi Vert & More Converge On NYC For ‘NBA 2K24’ Launch Party [Photos]

NBA 2K24 is here (our review is in progress), but to celebrate the arrival of the annual basketball video game, 2K put on a massive celebration in New York City.

On Wednesday, September 6, celebs, your favorite Hip-Hop stars, the press, NBA 2K fans, and athletes converged in NYC at the ArtsDistrict Brooklyn to celebrate the launch of NBA 2K24.

Those in attendance could experience several activations, including a barbershop, sneaker cleaning station, Brotherhood Deli with NBPA, Def Jam Freestyle Booth, and gaming stations to NBA 2K24 for a spin.

Among those in attendance include Ronnie 2K, of course, Hip-Hop stars Swae Lee, Fabolous, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Fivio Foreign, Maino, Jadakiss, Jim Jones, and Coi Leray, NBA stars Donovan Mitchell, Cade Cunningham, Tim Hardaway Jr. and, NBA 2K24 cover athlete and NY Liberty all-star guard Sabrina Ionescu and more.

As with all NBA 2K launch parties, there has to be a performance to cap off a great night, and it was pretty fitting to have Lil Uzi Vert hit the stage to perform his mega-hit, “Just Wanna Rock,” to usher in NBA 2K24.

The celebration didn’t stop there. On Thursday, Ronnie 2K, Swae Lee, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Cade Cunningham, and professional tennis superstar Frances Tiafoe hit the streets of Times Square NYC to play the first-ever 2K24 game on the big screen to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

NBA 2K24 is now available on every damn platform you can think of. Keep it locked on Hip-Hop Wired Gaming for our review of the game, and hit the gallery below for more photos from the launch party.

Zach Bryan Mugshot Is the New Spotify ‘Outlaw’ Country Playlist Cover

Not many people can say that they’ve earned a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, a Billboard 200 No. 1 album and a mug shot all in the same week — but most people aren’t Zach Bryan.

The Grammy-nominated country/rock powerhouse was arrested Thursday evening in Oklahoma for obstruction of investigation, according to the Craig County Sheriff’s Office. On Friday (Sept. 8), the cover of Spotify’s “Outlaw” country playlist was changed to Bryan’s brand-new mugshot. While there is still no explanation for the change in playlist artwork, the move is equal parts timely and clever.

Billboard has reached out to Spotify for comment.

“Today, I had an incident with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol,” Bryan wrote in a social media post. “Emotions got the best of me, and I was out of line in the things I said.” The sheriff’s office where Bryan was booked and photographed is in Vinita, Oklahoma —an hour northeast of Tulsa, where he currently lives.

This week has been one of the biggest in Bryan’s professional music career. He earned his first Hot 100 chart-topper, alongside Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves, with “I Remember Everything,” and that song’s parent album, an acclaimed self-titled effort, concurrently debuted atop the Billboard 200, marking his first No. 1 album in the United States. All 16 songs from the album debuted on the Hot 100, and he also earned the largest streaming week for a rock album in history.

Prior to the seismic success of his newest album, Bryan previously reached the Hot 100’s top 10 earlier this year with “Something in the Orange” (No. 10), his Grammy-nominated breakthrough hit that appears on American Heartbreak, his first Billboard 200 top ten album (No. 5).

Desiigner To Plead Guilty To Indecent Exposure Charge After Pleasuring Himself In Front Of Flight Attendants

In April, we reported that Brooklyn rapper, Desiigner checked himself into a mental health facility after exposing himself to a flight attendant on an international flight back to the U.S. from Thailand and Tokyo.

Now, the “Panda” rapper is reportedly set to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of indecent exposure on an aircraft, for which he will serve  2 years probation and 120 hours of community service, as opposed to the 90 days behind bars the charge is punishable by, according to TMZ.

Desiigner, born Sidney Royel Selby III, will also be ordered to pay a $5000 fine and issue a public apology to the flight attendants for his behavior.

For what it’s worth, here’s how Desiigner explained his lude behavior in a statement to TMZ:

“For the past few months, I have not been OK, and I have been struggling to come to terms with what is going on. While overseas for a concert I performed at, I had to be admitted into a hospital, I was not thinking clearly. They gave me meds, and I had to hop on a plane home. I am ashamed of my actions that happened on that plane. I landed back to the States, and am admitting myself in a facility to help me. I will be canceling all of my shows and any obligations until further notice. Mental health is real guys. Please pray for me. If you’re [sic] not feeling like yourself please get help.”

TMZ noted that since the incident, the “Timmy Turner” rapper immediately apologized, and he claimed he has attended 19 court-appointed counseling/therapy sessions. Meanwhile, his attorney asked the court not to impose travel restrictions on Desiigner since he has tour dates planned this year and next year. It’s unclear if a judge is likely to grant that request since it might be considered special treatment not to impose travel restrictions on someone who just pleaded guilty to pleasuring himself publicly during air travel.

Hopefully, DeSiigner is receiving the help he clearly needs and doesn’t create more unsuspecting victims of his indecent public behavior.

Watch ‘Masked Singer’ Duets From Michelle Williams & Rumer Willis, Joey Fatone & Bow Wow Ahead of Season 10 Kick-Off

The Masked Singer is back! Before season 10 officially premieres on Sept. 27, everyone’s favorite mystery singing competition will return with a special kick-off episode at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday night — and Billboard has exclusive previews of two very special duets below.

The first duet combines an eight-time Grammy-nominated boy band alum with the rapper behind the hits “Like You” (with Ciara) and “Let Me Hold You” (with Omarion): *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone and Bow Wow belt their hearts out while covering The Jackson 5’s “ABC,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.

Fatone competed in the first season of The Masked Singer. As Rabbit, he performed songs such as Bell Bev DeVoe’s “Poison” and finished fourth. In 2020, Bow Wow competed on the third season of The Masked Singer as Frog; he finished in third place and delivered memorable covers of Imagine Dragons’ “Whatever It Takes” and Naughty by Nature’s “Hip Hop Hooray.”

As for the other duet, Grammy-winning Destiny’s Child member and chart-topping gospel artist Michelle Williams joins forces with Dancing With the Stars victor Rumer Willis for a rousing rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” which was a top 10 hit for Aretha Franklin on the Hot 100 in 1967. As the two ladies belt and harmonize over the tasteful arrangement, the judges’ panel — which includes Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger — sing along in awe.

Willis finished fifth in the first season of The Masked Singer; the actress competed as the Lion, and her final performance was a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing.” In 2019, Williams competed as Butterfly on season 2 of The Masked Singer. Three years later, she competed as Rockhopper on season 3 of the British version of The Masked Singer. Later that year, she appeared on season 4 of The Masked Singer Australia as Microphone — making her the first celebrity to compete in three versions of the show.

The treats don’t stop there: In addition to the two duets, NBA star Victor Oladipo (Thingamajig on season 2), Barry Zito (The Rhino, season 3) and judge Scherzinger will team up for a trio performance. And The Masked Singer also revealed the special mystery guest who will perform and be unmasked on Sunday’s episode: ANONYMOUSE.
