TOMORROW X TOGETHER Debut ‘Back for More’ Alongside Anitta at 2023 MTV VMAs

When it came time to make their MTV Video Music Awards debut on Tuesday night (Sept. 12), TOMORROW X TOGETHER made sure to deliver the goods.

Taking to the stage late in the program, the K-pop superstars debuted their brand new single “Back for More” with a splash. Appearing onstage, all five members — Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun and HueningKai — appeared in a bejeweled and fringed jackets, belting out the lyrics to their groovy, disco-tinged song while executing suave dance moves to accentuate their on stage swagger. “All I know is, if you walk away/ Tell me something,” Yeonjun and Soobin sang. “Tell me things you can’t replace.”

As they hit their second verse, the boys were joined onstage by Latin superstar Anitta, following her own performance earlier in the evening and a win for best Latin. Dressed in a fringed black bra and panty combo, she joined the group in the staccato choreography and lent her sultry vocal to the energetic track. With a few blasts of pyrotechnics and an army of backup dancers joining them onstage, TXT brought their excellent VMAs debut to a bombastic close.

The performance comes after the band teased their new track with a series of videos posted across their social media on Sept. 5, showing the group and Anitta dancing along to the groovy new single.

The K-pop quintet weren’t just at the VMAs for their performance, though; TXT was up for four nominations at Tuesday’s ceremony. Before the show even started, the group won its very first Moon Person trophy for push performance of the year for its song “Sugar Rush Ride.”

The tribute performance, which was the final act of the 2023 VMAs on Tuesday night (Sept. 12), brought an array of styles and flows to the stage of the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five kicked off the affair with the legendary “The Message,” and a few minutes later, Minaj was owning the stage with “Itty Bitty Piggy,” demonstrating the evolution of the art form within a single performance.

Meanwhile, Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick slung rhymes and unmatched beatboxing, and when Weezy hit the stage, he seemed to shadowbox with the “A Milli” beat, bouncing around the stage and making the Prudential Center finish his “Orville Redenbacher” punchline. LL Cool J, spitting furiously in a sparkly getup, brought the performance back to the old school with “I’m Bad” and “Mama Said Knock You Out,” and he stayed onstage as Darryl McDaniel to run through some Run-DMC classics.

The medley ended with all of the performers onstage, rocking out to “Walk This Way” and embracing as the Newark crowd cheered.

Prior to the 50th anniversary performance, Nicki Minaj hosted the 2023 Video Music Awards, as well as performed her new top 40 hit “Last Time I Saw You” and an unreleased track from her upcoming Pink Friday 2 album. Lil Wayne also kicked off the VMAs with a performance of “Uproar” and “Kat Food.”

Måneskin Brings Blistering ‘Honey (Are U Comin)’ to 2023 MTV VMAs

Italian rockers Måneskin took the Prudential Center stage in New Jersey for Tuesday night’s (Sept. 12) VMAs, performing their recently released rave-up “Honey (Are U Coming?)”

Introduced by Chloe x Halle as “provocative performers and unapologetically themselves” who are “the embodiment of global rock stars,” the band started their performance with lead singer Damiano David walking through the crowd shirtless, while holding a video camera that beamed his perspective on screen. Once on stage, David put down the camera, and the band ripped through a tight performance of the new single, with David huddling with guitarist Thomas Raggi and bassist Victoria de Angelis at center stage for proper rock pose-striking.

Måneskin are two-time nominees at this year’s VMAs, winning best rock for their 2022 single “The Loneliest” and also nominated for best group. It’s their second year in a row both winning and performing at the VMAs, having taken best alternative in 2022 for their “I Wanna Be Your Slave,” and also playing “Supermodel” at that same year’s ceremonies — a performance that infamously included a wardrobe malfunction that required MTV to cut away from much of the performance.

“Honey (Are U Coming?)” debuts at No. 37 on Billboard‘s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart this week (dated Sept. 16) — their seventh career hit on the chart, with their Four Seasons cover “Beggin’” hitting No. 2 on the listing in 2021. The band is about to kick off a world tour in support of their 2023 album Rush!, kicking off Sept. 21 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Taylor Swift Calls Nicki Minaj Her ‘Favorite Sagittarius’ During 2023 MTV VMAs Acceptance Speech

Astrology fans, get your star charts out, because Taylor Swift just read the cosmos and realized that Nicki Minaj is the perfect distillation of her sign at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12).

Joining Minaj on stage after winning her third Moon Person for best direction, Swift immediately hugged Minaj and mouthed “I love you” to her. As she stepped to the microphone, the pop star gestured back to the rapper and told the crowd, “That’s my favorite Sagittarius over there,” much to the Minaj’s delight.

Swift then went on to accept her award for self-directing her “Anti-Hero” music video, by first acknowledging her team of fellow directors on the project; editor Chancler Haynes and her director of photography Rina Yang. “If there is one thing I’ve learned about direction, it’s that it is absolutely a team sport,” she said. “We’ve worked together so many times, and every time it is so much fun.”

The “Cruel Summer” singer also made sure to give a special thank you to Mike Birbiglia, John Early and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who portrayed “my nightmare, horrendous future children” in the song’s iconic funeral scene. “You absolutely played the parts perfectly,” she said.

Swift — who is also a Sagittarius — was nominated for a whopping 11 awards at Tuesday evening’s ceremony, leading all other artists in nominations. Those nods included video, artist and song of the year, the latter of which she won early in the ceremony for “Anti-Hero.” Minaj, meanwhile, served as the evening’s host, while also earning six nominations of her own.

SZA is one of the hottest artists out, musically and physically. So it’s no surprise that Kai Cenat tried to shoot his shot, and unfortunately, it failed epically for him.

Spotted on HipHopDx, popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat decided to shoot his shot at TDE R&B artist SZA with some help from Cardi B’s boo, Offset.

The Migos member was a guest on Cenat’s Twitch stream last week, where he did his best impression of Alex Hitchens by giving Cenat some advice to Cenat to help him spit game to land the big fish, SZA, whom he has a crush on.

Per HipHopDX:

After shaking his head at Kai’s initial idea — which involved messaging SZA: “Hello, how you doing? Dat ass was fat in the last music video” — Offset advised him to slide into SZA’s Instagram DMs in more cool and cryptic fashion.

“That ain’t playa, that ain’t P. You gotta ease your way [in], man,” Set said. “‘I got an idea’… that’s what you say. That’s just to get the little bite. ‘I got an idea’ — it’s simple.”

He cautioned: “But then, see, when you do that, you get the reply? You gotta have an idea.”

Offset’s Advice Backfired For Kai Cenat

In most cases, Offset’s advice might have worked, but it delivered the opposite effect for Cenat. In a follow-up stream, he revealed shooting his shot at the “Good Days” singer didn’t get him her phone number but a lovely block.

“I can’t send any more messages, bro,” he said despondently after spending several moments with his mouth wide open in shock. “On God! I can’t send any more messages, bro!” Centa told his followers.

Cenat held up his phone to his viewers to prove that SZA hit him with a block. The clip went viral online, and someone added Drake’s simp tune, “Marvin’s Room.”

According to the website, Cenat might not be blocked. Instead, he might be the victim of the new Instagram invite feature where he has to be accepted by SZA before he can start conversing with him in the DMs.

So we’re going to keep hope alive for Kai Centat.

Metro Boomin Is ‘Calling’ for a ‘Superhero’ With Guest-Filled Performance at the 2023 MTV VMAs

Metro Boomin took over the Prudential Center at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night (Sept. 12), bringing together a slew of his hip-hop heavyweight friends for a medley of “Superhero” and “Calling.”

While Metro and his turntable levitated over the stage, Future, Swae Lee, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and NAV traded verses down below, surrounded by a foggy laboratory landscape filled with rocks and elevators. The performance was a showcase of today’s biggest hip-hop talent, which is fitting given that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the genre.

“Future is an anomaly,” Metro previously told Billboard of his frequent collaborator. “You don’t get to see too many people of any industry perform and deliver at the rate and level that he does for this amount of time. I met him and started working with him when I was 18 to [my current age of] 29, and he was on before that. It’s a true testament to his grind and his will.”

“Superhero” peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Calling” peaked at No. 41. Over on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs, “Superhero” bowed at No. 2, while “Calling” climbed to No. 13. “Superhero” appears on Metro Boomin’s 2022 album Heroes & Villains, which topped the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart in December.

Metro Boomin was nominated for four awards at this year’s ceremony, including album of the year for Heroes & Villains; best hip-hop for his Future collab “Superhero (Heroes and Villains)”; and best collaboration and best R&B for his The Weeknd, 21 Savage and Diddy team-up “Creepin’ (Remix).”

Peso Pluma Makes His MTV VMAs Debut With ‘Lady Gaga’ Performance

¡Arriba México, Viejo!” Peso Pluma enthusiastically said at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12). Arguably the fastest rising star to hit the American pop mainstream this year, the Guadalajara native made his VMAs debut at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., to perform “Lady Gaga” off his 2023 album Génesis — and Peso Pluma fever was on full display.

Backed by his band — which was made up of of brass players, a tololoche (a sort of stand-up bass), a requinto (12-string guitar) and guitars — attendees gave the performer a warm welcome. With his performance, the Mexican hitmaker — became the first regional Mexican musical act to perform corridos at the annual awards show.

Wearing a huge black puffer jacket and durag, Peso Pluma appeared more like a drill artist than a traditional corridos singer, completing his look with a baggy T-shirt and pants. But that’s the appeal: He resonates with an urbano crowd that leans toward a street-style aesthetic and a bélico lifestyle.

Peso Pluma is nominated for a several VMA awards, including song of the summer for the Mexican reggaetón hit “La Bebe (Remix)” with Yng Lvcas, as well as the best new artist award, which Bronx rapper Ice Spice and North Carolina singer Reneé Rapp are also competing for. Previous winners in that category include Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler, the Creator and Lady Gaga.

“My life has changed a lot,” Peso told Billboard in the July cover issue, recalling that his first shows in Mexico just last year were attended by 500 people. He’s currently in the midst of his first U.S. tour.

Karol G Brings Bichota Season to the 2023 MTV VMAs With ‘Oki Doki’ & ‘Ta OK’

Colombian powerhouse Karol G kicked off Bichota Season at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12) at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., with a sweltering performance of “Oki Doki” from her latest album, Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season).

Wearing a fishnet leotard that showed off her pink bikini top, matching sleeves and hair to boot, Karol brought her signature electrifying smooth reggaetón vibes to the MTV stage. The singer soon transitioned to belt out “Tá OK (Remix),” a collaboration that usually features fellow Colombian artist Maluma, Brazilian sensation DENNIS and MC Kevin o Chris.

Karol G was nominated for four awards, including artist of the year, and best collaboration for “TQG” with Shakira.

Karol G is currently on an international tour with Mañana Será Bonito. With several sold-out stadium concerts and an electric stage presence, the Colombian sensation proved during the VMAs that she is a cultural Latin icon who continues to reshape and elevate the Latin music scene on a global scale.

Her 2023 album, Mañana Será Bonito, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200; follow-up Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season), scored a No. 1 placement on the Top Latin Albums chart.  She also broke the record for most Hot Latin Songs entries among women as the aforementioned album debuted.

Four of the artists featured in this year’s main show hail from Latin America, illustrating the global influence of Latin pop in recent years. Shakira and Karol G hail from Colombia, trilingual force Anitta represents Brazil and Peso Pluma is from Mexico, showcasing the storied tradition of músia mexicana.

Watch Ice Spice School Ben Affleck on Munchkins in New Ad for Her Dunkin’ Drink

Ice Spice knows what’s what! The rising rap star drops some knowledge on Ben Affleck in a Dunkin’ ad promoting her newly announced drink collab in the spot that aired Tuesday (Sept. 12) during the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

The commercial kicks off with the Oscar-winning actor boasting that he’s been promoted to Dunkin’s brand ambassador. (In his Super Bowl 2023 ad for the the coffee and doughnut chain, the star — who is known for his love of Dunkin’ — works the drive-thru window.) He then sits down with the “Munch (Feelin’ U)” rapper, who’s holding a Munchkin doughnut hole in one hand.

“We gotta come up with a drink name, but it’s not easy, right? Nowadays, with social media, the kids — it’s gotta be authentic,” Affleck informs the rapper in a thick Boston accent. “How are people gonna connect you with Dunkin’?”

“Yeah, I’m a Dunkin’ girl!” she shares, which confuses the Air star. The musician then gives him a lesson on who she is and her fandom’s name, telling him, “Ice Spice? My fans are the Munchkins?”

Still confused, Affleck wonders, “Where’re you going with this?”

“Ice … Spice … Munchkins drink?” the rapper spells out slowly for him, a box of Munchkins doughnut holes in front of her.

The director still doesn’t comprehend, and spits out another suggestion — including an attempt to rhyme, which does not impress the actual rapper at the table.

“Collaborating with Dunkin’ and Ben Affleck on this spot was a dream,” the rapper said in a statement. “The drink has a fun twist, a little something in the name for my fans, too. I can’t wait for everyone to try it.”

“Pumpkin spice season has gotten a bit predictable lately, so we sought help from our friends Ben
Affleck and Ice Spice to create a new pumpkin obsession that only Dunkin’ can offer,” said Jill McVicar
Nelson, chief marketing officer at Dunkin’, in a statement about the beverage, which arrives Sept. 13. “The result? The collaboration you never knew you needed: Pumpkin Munchkins and Frozen Dunkin’ Coffee, blended together to create the Ice Spice MUNCHKINS® Drink.”

According to the brand, this is the first time that one of its doughnuts has been combined with its frozen drinks. The Ice Spice Munchkins beverage blends the pumpkin-flavored Munchkin with a frozen coffee, which is then topped with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle to create the fall-themed drink.

Dunkin’ and Ice Spice are doing more than just an ad spot and social media posts to promote their collaboration. On Tuesday, hours ahead of the VMAs, the rapper revealed a lavish diamond necklace that spelled out “munchkins.” The brand confirmed to Billboard that the blinged-out accessory — which was designed by high-end jeweler Eliantte and features more than 80 carats of diamonds and a chain made from 14k white and rose gold — will be worn by the rapper when she attends MTV’s annual awards show, where she’s nominated for best new artist and push performance of the year for “Princess Diana.”

The crowd reaction following the performance was just as breathless, as Stray Kids were met with rapturous applause.

Earlier on Tuesday night, Stray Kids took the VMAs stage when “S-Class” earned the Best K-Pop trophy, winning over visuals from aespa, BLACKPINK, FIFTY FIFTY, SEVENTEEN and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. “We’ve been making our music ever since the start of our career, but to receive this award just really means a lot to us,” Bang Chan said from the stage.
