In a video taken from the studio and posted to Instagram, the three-time Grammy winner and Fast & Furious star rapped over a beat while checking several of the claims in Williams’ recent Club Shay Shay interview with football legend Shannon Sharpe, which sparked numerous viral moments.

“Whatever’s heavy on my heart is always on my mind/ Like Snoop’s cannabis shredder I’m always on my grind,” the freestyle kicks off. “They throwing shade ‘cause n—as could never take my shine/ I bring my watch collection on my jet, let me take my time/ Like fine wine I’m aging like Benjamin/ Top five, I’m worth mentioning/ Bring me rappers, I’m lynching ‘em.”

“Never been Illuminati, only Ill-Luda-nati/ And I only left with b—–s when coming from any party/ Now I’m married with kids, the evolution of life/ Never been a clout chaser, never say s–t for likes/ RIP John Singleton, you never have to flex when you earned every one of your Fast and Furious checks/ Afro with the sideburns, yeah that’s my signature/ Addiction’s on the rise, comedians check your temperature.”

Ludacris came up on Club Shay Shay when the host, three-time Super Bowl champion Sharpe, asked if Williams and the rapper were related in the midst of discussing the comedian’s conflicts with other comics in his field.

“So, there was a crossroads where we were both invited to an Illuminati thing, and it had to be one or the other of us and decisions had to be made,” Williams explained. “So it was both of us. We were equal. One of us had to cut off all their hair and couldn’t do the sideburn thing no more, with the points. And the next person they said was going to get $200 million because they were going to pay him $10 million a movie to do 20 movies. And that’s how the conversation happened. One of those persons turned out to be Ludacris, and the other person turned out to be Katt Williams.”

Following Luda’s freestyle, fans praised him for taking time to address the rumors. “Soo that’s what it took to get Luda back on a mic?!” one fan mused, with another fan commenting “And that’s that on that!” with a fire emoji.

One of Hip-Hop’s most hated figures has received an unexpected honor. A statue of 6ix9ine has been created in Cuba.
As reported by HipHopDX, the “GUMMO” performer is now immortalized in the streets of the communist country. This week, a local artist unveiled a bust of the rapper turned federal informant. The art piece captures all of 6ix9ne’s signature features including his rainbow braids, matching teeth, multiple tattoos and his truck jewelry. In one hand, he’s holding stacks of money over his shoulder and a microphone in the other hand. To add further depth to the instillation, the rainbow colors with the number 69 are also painted throughout the back wall.

Genis M. Osoria Vargas, who created the statue, admits in an Instagram post that the “work is misunderstood” but reveals that it was commissioned by an unknown buyer. The piece is located in Pinar del Río, a city west of the nation’s capital. Thus far, the feedback that Vargas has received from locals has been largely positive with some commenting in Spanish “Good job” and “Your work is beautiful.”

In October, the rapper was arrested in the Dominican Republic for allegedly assaulting some producers. He was granted bail and posted it right away. 6ix9ine was ordered to stay away from the victims via a restraining order prior to leaving the country. He explained his side of the story on social media and thanked the people of Dominican Republic for their love and support.

6ix9ine has yet to comment on the statue. You can see footage of it below.

David Soul, ‘Starsky & Hutch’ Star and ‘Don’t Give Up on Us’ Singer Dies at 80

David Soul, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed star of hit 1970s cop series Starsky & Hutch and soft rock balladeer has died at 80. In a statement on Soul’s site, the actor’s wife, Helen Snell, wrote, “David Soul – beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother – died yesterday (4 January) after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend. His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”

The star born David Richard Solbert on Aug. 28, 1943 in Chicago bounced between acting and singing for much of his career following an itinerant childhood in which his family moved from South Dakota to Berlin, where his father, history and political science professor Dr. David Solberg, served as the senior representative for the Lutheran World Federation refugee relief organization in the early 1950s.

According to his official bio, the talented baseball player was offered a pro contract with the Chicago White Sox after graduating from high school, but opted instead to join his family in Mexico after his second year of college, where he befriended a group of radicalized students who gifted him a guitar and taught him their nation’s indigenous songs. Soul later hitchhiked back to the Midwest and auditioned for a gig singing folk songs at the Ten O’Clock Scholar, a Univ. of Minnesota coffee house which had once hosted a young Bob Dylan.

After co-founding the Firehouse Theater in Minneapolis in the 1960s and foreshortening his last name to the more pithy “Soul,” the actor hit upon a gimmick of performing his folk songs while wearing a ski mask and calling himself “The Covered Man.” That bit landed him agency representation from the William Morris Agency, “sight unseen,” and a recurring spot on The Merv Griffin Show, where he performed his masked act; he also signed with MGM Records and released his debut album, The Covered Man.

After his first TV role in the light children’s series Flipper, Soul got a spot on the comedy I Dream of Jeannie and appeared in a 1967 episode of Star Trek, which led to his next gig playing Joshua Bolt on the comedy Western Here Come the Brides from 1968-1970. Soul appeared in a few more small screen gigs before Clint Eastwood cast him as a police officer in the gritty 1973 crime drama — and Dirty Harry sequel — Magnum Force.

That cop turn led to the defining role of Soul’s career as detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson on the police procedural Starsky & Hutch (1975-1979), where he starred alongside Paul Michael Glaser’s David Michael Starsky in the popular series in which the men tore around the fictional city of Bay City, CA in their signature red Ford Gran Torino with a white stripe on the side.

Soul went on to make cameos in a number of other popular 1970s dramas and comedies — Cannon, Gunsmoke, Ironside, Medical Center, The Streets of San Francisco and All in the Family, among many others — while also directing and and producing films and theater productions throughout the 1980s and staring in a number of West End production after moving to London in the 1990s.

He also launched a parallel music career with a series of soft rock hits under his stage name, beginning with his 1976 self-titled debut album, which featured a mix of originals and covers of songs by Leonard Cohen and Dr. Music. His 1976 ballad “Don’t Give Up On Us” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (while also topping the UK charts) and was followed by the 1977 No. 1 UK hit “Silver Lady” (which hit No. 5 on the U.S. charts). Several more albums followed, with diminishing returns, including 1977’s Playing to an Audience of One, 1979’s Band of Friends, 1982’s The Best Days of My Life and his final full-length, 1997’s Leave a Light On.

Sweet Success: A History of Willy Wonka Music on Billboard Charts

Willy Wonka has charted lots of ear candy on Billboard’s surveys.

For over half a century, songs that stemmed from Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have sweetened Billboard surveys, encompassing three hit films, a Broadway musical and more.

The franchise’s latest entry is Wonka, the movie that chronicles the backstory of how the famed chocolatier’s career began. Its companion album debuts at No. 18 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart (dated Jan. 6), with 4,000 equivalent album units, up 29%, Dec. 22-28, according to Luminate.

One of the set’s signature songs, “Pure Imagination,” sung by Wonka’s namesake star Timothée Chalamet, hit No. 27 two weeks earlier on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart.

The film’s soundtrack features new songs performed by Chalamet and fellow cast members, including such cuts central to the movie’s storyline as “A Hatful of Dreams,” ballad “For a Moment,” a duet with co-star Calah Lane, “You’ve Never Had Chocolate Like This,” and “A World of Your Own.” Many were written by Simon Farnaby, Neil Hannon and Wonka director Paul King, while Joby Talbot wrote the film’s original score.

“A World of Your Own,” notably, has been submitted for contention for best original song at the 96th Academy Awards. (Nominations will be announced Jan. 24, with the Oscars to be held March 10.)

Fellow Wonka stars, including Hugh Grant and Keegan-Michael Key, also perform tracks in the film and on its soundtrack.

Wonka, meanwhile, is off to a scrumdiddlyumptious start at the box office, already closing in on reported grosses of $150 million domestically and $250 million internationally since it premiered Dec. 15.

As the new movie adds another chapter of chart (ready, set) action, here’s a look at how Willy Wonka has long been choc-ful of success on Billboard’s charts.

Kelly Clarkson Jokes About Wearing ‘Tight Sh-t’ Amid Weight Loss Journey

Kelly Clarkson is breaking down her weight loss journey piece by piece.

During her Chemistry: An Intimate Evening with Kelly Clarkson Las Vegas residency, the “Breakaway” singer poked fun at her wardrobe evolution amid her recent body transformation. In a Jan. 2 TikTok, an audience member asks Clarkson to take a shot with them, prompting the Grammy winner to explain why that might be a bit difficult.

“Oh, boy. I really can’t bend in these,” Clarkson quipped, stretching over the gap between the stage and the audience to grab a single-shot bottle of what the fan confirmed as vodka in a semi-sheer black curve-hugging jumpsuit. “Dude, this is tight. Like, I lost weight and they’re like, ‘Let’s get you into this tight s–t.’”

Clarkson eventually did take the shot, quoting the iconic “I’m a cool mom” Mean Girls quote once the fan confirmed that the shot was in celebration of their 22nd birthday. After initially saying the alcohol smelt like “electric glue,” Clarkson eventually conceded, “Well, that tastes pretty good!”

The “Since U Been Gone” singer recently opened up about her weight loss journey in a Jan. 3 interview with People. “Walking in the city is quite the workout, and I’m really into infrared saunas right now. I just got a cold plunge because everybody wore me down,” she revealed. “I eat a healthy mix. I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn’t. And 90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”

Next month (Feb. 4), Clarkson is headed to the Grammys with a best pop vocal album nomination for Chemistry — her tenth studio album and ninth Billboard 200 top 10 entry. On the Billboard Hot 100, the powerhouse vocalist has collected 11 top 10 hits, including the chart-toppers “Stronger” (three weeks), “My Life Would Suck Without You” (two weeks) and “A Moment Like This” (two weeks).

Watch Kelly Clarkson joke about her weight loss and take a shot with a fan below.

Executive Turntable: ASM Global Hires SVP of Live Entertainment; DICE Pays Piper McCoy to Handle Communications

Happy New Year! It’s time for another quick spin around the Executive Turntable, Billboard’s comprehensive(ish) compendium of promotions, hirings, exits and firings — and all things in between — across music.

ASM Global welcomed live music veteran and former artist manager Jason Rio as senior vice president of live entertainment and content development. In his new role, Rio will oversee ASM’s plans to grow its position in content generation for its arenas, stadiums, theaters and convention centers. Rio brings years of promoter expertise ranging from his time at Live Nation, where he held senior roles in the major Houston and Chicago markets, to his most recent assignment as vp of music for the Ambassador Theatre Group. In a past work life, Rio spent 20 years managing the likes of The Fray, Liz Phair, Michelle Branch and others. He also worked for Pres. Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012 … Across the pond, Andy O’Sullivan joined the company as CEO of landmark multi-use event space Olympia London. He arrives following an 11-year run as venue director at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I’m incredibly excited to be joining such a transformational project at such a critical time, one that’s taking shape right here in London!” he said.

Wise Music Group hired Betsey Perlmutter as vice president of Schirmer Theatrical, the company’s concert and theatrical production arm. In her new position, Perlmutter will focus on leveraging WMG’s global catalog across symphonic, ballet, concert and theatrical disciplines. She is best known as former producer and artistic planning manager for the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center, where she oversaw the expansion of non-traditional concert programming, spanning musical theater, contemporary opera, chamber music and the launch of The Art of the Score film music series. Prior to the Phil, she held positions at Wave Hill Cultural Center and the New York Public Library. “Betsey’s extensive experience with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center is invaluable to us as we embark on this new stage of international creative rights development,” said Robert Thompson, president.

DICE hired Piper McCoy as vp of communications, overseeing campaigns, executive profiling, thought leadership initiatives and government affairs comms. She previously held the same role at Buzzfeed, and has held key roles at Rush Communications, Roc Nation, New Era Cap and Walmart. “With over 20 years of experience across the media, sports and entertainment industries, Piper has been brought on board to build DICE’s stakeholder and industry engagement, drive growth across Europe and the US, and guide DICE in reshaping the live music industry through impactful strategic storytelling campaigns,” the company said in its announcement.

Board Shorts: The Golden Globe Foundation, formed last year following the award show’s sale to Eldridge Globes, elected its officers and board of directors for the year. Veteran photojournalist Earl Gibson III will serve as board chair, freelance journalist Henry Arnaud as treasurer, and leadership consultant Tom Kittleson as secretary. The foundation’s board also includes Silvia Bizio, Mia Farrell, Jeff Harris, Helen Hoehne, Adam Tanswell, and Meher Tatna.

Sony Music’s AWAL promoted a pair, putting Jacqueline Rossi in charge of the company’s global commercial partnerships team and Dale Connone at the helm of streaming and promotion efforts. Rossi was most recently senior director of global commercial partnerships, while Rossi led initiatives related to digital services. He also helms the independent label service IN2UNE, an AWAL-owned music coalition.

Dale Watson’s annual Ameripolitan Music Awards hired industry mainstay Roger Christian as head of marketing and promotion ahead of its 10th annual show, taking place Feb. 18 at The Moody Theater in Austin. With over 40 years of experience in the bank, Christian has held senior roles at MCA, Sony/CBS, Jem Records Texas and Big State Distributing, among others, and most recently centered his efforts growing his Roger Christian Entertainment Group. “Promoting the Ameripolitan Music Awards is the kind of challenge I love,” Christian said. “I’m so very honored to be working with Dale, Celine and all the incredibly talented artists in Ameripolitan Music.”

Top 25 Billboard Hot Country Songwriters of 2023

Country music had a record-setting year in 2023, thanks to hit songs released by Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Oliver Anthony Music, Zach Bryan, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll and other big artists.

But underpinning every chart-topping, impactful hit were the songwriters and writer-artists who weave together lyric, melody, rhythm and rhyme into a unique composition that pulls at the heartstrings, inspires a rollicking good time and/or lays bare relatable truths. Last year brought history-making success for many songwriters and writer-artists, who further added to their songwriting legacies.

Tracy Chapman became the first Black songwriter to earn the CMA’s song of the year honor, after Combs recorded Chapman’s 1988 smash “Fast Car.” Wallen’s “Last Night,” written by Ashley Gorley, John Byron, Jacob Kasher Hindlin (JKash), and Ryan Vojtesak (a.k.a. Charlie Handsome), spent 25 weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart. Oliver Anthony Music (real name: Chris Lunsford) found unprecedented success when “Rich Men North of Richmond” debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 — with Anthony having previously notched zero entries on any Billboard chart.

Meanwhile, Bryan spent nearly 20 weeks at the pinnacle of the Hot Country Songs chart this year, thanks to his songs “Something in the Orange” and the Kacey Musgraves duet “I Remember Everything.” And thanks to the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in July 2023, Taylor Swift saw several of her re-recorded versions of songs from her 2010 album Speak Now show up on this year’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Here, we look at Billboard‘s 2023 Year-End Hot Country Songwriters Chart, highlighting the songwriters who dominated the Hot Country Songs chart in 2023. (The weekly Hot Country Songs chart lists the week’s most popular current country songs across all genres, ranked by streaming activity data by online music sources tracked by Luminate, radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Mediabase and provided by Luminate and sales data as compiled by Luminate.)

Billie Eilish Dedicates ‘What Was I Made For’ Win at Palm Springs Film Awards to ‘Anyone Who Experiences Hopelessness’

Billie Eilish knows that great art sometimes comes from the darkest places. And on Thursday night (Jan. 4) at the Palm Springs Film Awards, the 22-year-old singer accepted the Chairman’s Award in honor of her Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated Barbie soundtrack hit “What Was I Made For?” with an emotional speech dedicated to anyone struggling with thoughts of despair she knows all too well.

“I would really like to say that this award and any recognition that this song gets, I just want to dedicate to anyone who experiences hopelessness, the feeling of existential dread and feeling like, what’s the point, why am I here and why am I doing this?,” Eilish said while accepting the award alongside her brother/producer, Finneas, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The pair picked up the honor — marking the first time it’s been given to a musician — after a tribute from Barbie director Greta Gerwig. “I think we all feel like that occasionally, but I think if somebody like me, with the amount of privilege that I have and the incredible things that I get to do and be and how I have really not wanted to be here… sorry to be dark, damn, but I’ve spent a lot of time feeling that way,” Eilish continued.

The singer — who has openly and frequently discussed her mental health struggles — also shared a message of hope for others who have felt similar despair. “I just want to say to anyone that feels that way, be patient with yourself and know that it is, I think, worth it all,” Eilish said, adding that “it’s good to be alive now” after not feeling that way for “a very long time.”

Eilish shared that Gerwig approached the siblings about contributing to the hit movie’s soundtrack at a point when the singer was “in a dark episode and things didn’t make sense in life. I just didn’t understand what the point was and why you would keep going. Just questioning everything in the world.”

But after she and Finneas sat in a theater and screened around 35 minutes of footage, Eilish said she was overcome with emotion watching Margot Robbie’s Barbie saying and feeling things “that I really, really, really resonated with and felt so close to. I felt so seen, and I did not expect that.” The result was the hushed, emotional ballad whose spare, thoughtful lyrics plumb existential questions in a most elegant way. “I don’t know how to feel/ But I wanna try/ I don’t know how to feel/ But someday I might/ Someday I might,” she sings on the track.

“I think that this movie is the most incredible, most empowering and beautiful and funny and just unbelievable piece of art in the world, and I’m so, so honored to be a part of it,” Eilish added before turning the mic over to her brother, who used his time to pay tribute to their parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell.

“Our parents were theater people before they were our parents. They met on a flight to Alaska to do regional theater in 1984, and in the ‘90s they got married to each other and decided to start a family,” he said. “They decided that it might be a good idea to move from New York where they were doing plays to Los Angeles to maybe do some things that would make some residual income like film and television. That didn’t work out at all, and I think it underscored as children that it was okay to have dreams that didn’t pan out the way that you thought they might. And it also underscored that the entertainment industry, like all industries, is fairly unfair.”

Despite their struggle, though, Finneas said the siblings were not raised by “bitter people who hadn’t gotten to achieve their dreams. We were raised by people who did nothing but encourage us to believe in ourselves and pursue the dreams and passions that we had. I don’t particularly know how they were able to do both of those things, but they were, and we’d be nothing and nowhere without our parents, and I love them so much.”

“What Was I Made For?” is nominated for best original song at Sunday night’s (Jan. 7) 81st annual Golden Globe Awards, as well as record of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, best song written for visual media and best music video at the upcoming (Feb. 4) Grammy Awards.
