Sphere Entertainment Pulls Plug on London Venue, Sets Sights on Alternative ‘Forward-Thinking’ Cities

Sphere Entertainment has said it’s committed to working with alternative “forward-thinking cities around the world” after officially withdrawing plans to build a Sphere concert arena in London.

On Monday (Jan. 8), Sphere Entertainment’s sister company, Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSGE), which is owned by tycoon James Dolan, told British officials that it would not be proceeding with its long-standing proposal to build a Sphere venue in the British capital city.

The announcement came less than two months after London Mayor Sadiq Khan blocked plans for the 21,500-capacity, 300-foot-tall spherical building because of the impact he believed it would have on the surrounding area, including high energy use and the “significant light intrusion” it would cause local residents.

In a letter to the planning inspectorate seen by Billboard, Richard Constable, MSGE’s executive vp/global head of government affairs and social impact, told officials that “following careful review, we cannot continue to participate in a process that is merely a political football between rival parties.”

“It is extremely disappointing that Londoners will not benefit from the Sphere’s groundbreaking technology and the thousands of well-paying jobs it would have created,” wrote Constable, confirming that MSGE — acting on behalf of Sphere Entertainment — was officially withdrawing its application from the planning process.

The termination of MSGE’s plans for a London version of its $2 billion Sphere venue in Las Vegas follows years of controversy surrounding the project, which was due to be built on a five-acre plot of land in Stratford, East London (the site has been largely derelict since 2012 when it was used as a temporary coach park during the London Olympics).

A proposal for what was later christened MSG Sphere London was first submitted in 2019, but it immediately received strong opposition from local councillors and campaign groups, as well as AEG, the owner and operator of the 20,000-capacity The O2 arena located less than five miles away.

Despite residents’ concerns, The London Legacy Development Company provisionally greenlit the plans in March 2022 before they were subsequently overturned by Mayor Khan last November.

In a statement, Sphere Entertainment said it had informed Michael Gove — the U.K. secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities, who initiated a review of the mayor’s decision in December — that it would not be moving forward with its plans for London and would not be participating in a review.

“We are committed to continuing to work collaboratively with forward-thinking cities around the world who are serious about bringing this next-generation entertainment experience to their communities,” said a spokesperson for Sphere Entertainment.

Sphere Entertainment Co., formerly Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSGE), was formed in April when MSGE’s traditional live entertainment business, which includes the Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall venues in New York, split off from the Sphere and MSG Networks businesses. Sphere retained a 33% stake in MSGE.

The five-acre site earmarked for the London Sphere, which MSGE bought for around £60 million ($76 million), is now expected to be put up for sale.

Meanwhile, the developer is understood to be in talks with multiple international markets about rolling out the Sphere model in other global cities, following its high-grossing debut in Las Vegas last year with a residency by U2.

In December, the New York Post reported that Dolan was meeting with investors in Abu Dhabi about building a second Sphere in the United Arab Emirates capital. Also last year, several South Korean newspapers reported that the city of Hanam was another potential future location after talks took place between city officials and representatives of MSGE. Sphere Entertainment Co. declined to comment on those reports when contacted by Billboard.

Linking up with Madlib for the Wild for the Wildchild and Q-Tip assisted visuals to “One For Biz,” Talib and company take to a sunny beach resort hotel in Kendwa, Tanzania where they rock the crowd by night before enjoying some waves by day as they ride a boat on the open sea while dropping their bars and stuntin’ in cruise wear. Unfortunately Q-Tip wasn’t able to make the trip.

On the R&B tip, Bas gets all in his feelings and for his Amaarae assisted clip to “Decent,” animation is the name of the game as we’re treated to an animated feature which shows how a couple can feel when going through the motions of a relationship.

Columbia Records Ups Joe Gallo to GM

Columbia Records announced Joe Gallo‘s promotion to GM on Wednesday (Jan. 10). Gallo, who started at the label more than a decade ago, previously held the position of executive vp/head of sales.

“Spending the last ten years in a commercial role allowed me to work with teams across the label and its storied roster,” Gallo said in a statement. “I’m excited for the opportunity to expand upon Columbia’s foundation and be a part of its future.”

In a separate statement, Jen Mallory, the label’s president, added that “Joe’s level of dedication to Columbia’s artists is infectious. He wholeheartedly invests himself in every campaign using his innate intuition and deep knowledge of an evolving global marketplace to deliver the very best for our roster. He’s an innovative strategist, diligent team player, and a diehard music fan.”

In recent years, Gallo has worked on campaigns for Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles, Adele, Beyoncé, Tyler, the Creator and Rosalía, among others.

“Executing successful Hot 100 campaigns requires exceptional music, patience, strategy and confident decision making,” Gallo explained in 2021. “One needs to know the makings of the chart and the opportunity each single has to perform. There are a lot of factors at play — audio and video streaming, track sales and radio audience. Every team at the label plays a role as the collective point total ultimately determines each track’s fate. Timing is a major factor. It is critical to understand the point makeup of any track sitting in there, how it performed to get to its current position and which buttons to push to maximize each track’s potential. You also need to know who you are up against — always pay attention to the competition. Victory loves preparation.”

Gallo will have a chance to oversee another Hot 100 campaign shortly: Earlier this week, Columbia star Lil Nas X announced that he will release a new single on Friday (Jan. 12).

Reneé Rapp Calls Out Jo Koy for ‘Making a Bunch of Jokes About Women’ at the Golden Globes

Jokes at the expense of women are “out” in Renée Rapp’s book.

The Mean Girls superstar joined her co-stars — Angourie Rice, Avantika and Bebe Wood — at Today with Hoda and Jenna on Wednesday (Jan. 10), where the group took part in the TikTok trend of revealing what is “in” and “out” for 2024.

“My outs… First is the man that yelled at me this morning at 8 a.m. and told me to smile. Go to hell,” Rapp said. “And also my out was the man that was making a bunch of jokes about women last night at the Golden Globes.”

Rapp seemed to refer to Golden Globes host Jo Koy‘s opening monologue at the ceremony on Sunday (Jan. 7), where he made several quips towards Taylor Swift and the Barbie film. Koy’s joke about Swift centered around how often the NFL’s cameras cut to reaction shots of the singer when she attends boyfriend Travis Kelce’s games. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” the comic joked as cameras cut to Swift, who reacted with pursed lips before casually sipping from her champagne flute.

Koy also joked that Barbie is “based on a plastic doll with big boobies,” despite the film’s powerful message about self-actualization and the toxicity of the patriarchy.

Olivia Rodrigo Talks ‘Incredible’ Oscar Buzz & Champagne-Filled 21st Birthday Plans

You may not be able to catch her now, but the Oscars just might be able to.

As awards season kicks into high gear, Olivia Rodrigo has her sights set on the Academy Awards. At the Academy’s 14th annual Governors Awards on Tuesday, the Grammy-winner dished on the Oscar chances for her song “Can’t Catch Me Now” from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and her plans for her upcoming 21st birthday.

“It’s so incredible,” Rodrigo gushed to Access Hollywood of her Hunger Games prequel track making the Academy’s shortlist for best original song. “There’s just so many people on that list who I’m inspired by, so many songs that I think are incredible, so it’s an honor.”

Rodrigo, alongside go-to collaborator Dan Nigro, co-wrote and performed “Can’t Catch Me Now” for the box-office-topping Hunger Games prequel starring Rachel Zegler, Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer and Tom Blyth. The haunting Americana-inflected track reached No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100. At the 2023 Hollywood Music in Media Awards, “Can’t Catch Me Now” won best original song in a sci-fi, fantasy or horror film.

In addition to “Can’t Catch Me Now,” other notable songs on the Academy’s shortlist include Billie Eilish‘s “What Was I Made For?” (from Barbie) — which won the equivalent Golden Globe Award on Sunday — Fantasia‘s “Superpower (I)” (from The Color Purple), The Osage Tribe’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (from Killers of the Flower Moon) and Jon Batiste‘s “It Never Went Away” (from American Symphony).

Although she finds herself among stiff competition, Rodrigo didn’t write her Hunger Games track with the intention of entering the Oscar race. “I think that if I was writing a song and thought about how other people were gonna hear it, I just would be so overcome by anxiety that I couldn’t write at all,” she told Access Hollywood. “So I try to kind of block that all out and just write for me.”

Later on the red carpet, the “Traitor” singer spilled her birthday plans to Entertainment Tonight. “It is a big birthday,” she said. “I think I’m gonna have a party with my friends and pop some champagne, you know? It’s the 21st!” The multihyphenate turns 21 next month (Feb. 20), but she says Vegas isn’t quite in her line of sight yet. “I’ll save that. I’ll save that for later,” she said.

Shortly before her birthday, Rodrigo will enjoy the 66th annual Grammy Awards, where she boasts six nominations, including in album of the year (Guts) and record and song of the year (“Vampire”). The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series alum already has three Golden Gramophones to her name; she took home best new artist, best pop vocal album (Sour) and best pop solo performance (“Drivers License”) at the 2022 ceremony.

Pete Davidson Says He Was High on Ketamine at Aretha Franklin’s Funeral

Pete Davidson is reflecting back to some difficult moments in his life.

In his new Netflix comedy special, Pete Davidson: Turbo Fonzarelli, the 30-year-old star recalled being under the influence of ketamine while attending the 2018 memorial service of the legendary Aretha Franklin alongside his then-fiancée Ariana Grande. “It’s embarrassing when you’re not on ketamine anymore, though,” Davidson admitted. “I’m embarrassed. I was out and about like that. That’s not cool, you know?”

“Yeah, I have to live with that,” he continued. “[Aretha] will never know, but still, that’s not the point. You know what I mean?”

Davidson added that while in his intoxicated state of mind, he made a joke to Franklin’s family. “I’m so high, I thought it would be a good idea to go up to her family and go, ‘Hey, I’m just here to pay my R-E-S-P-E-C-Ts,’” he recalled, referencing Franklin’s classic track, “Respect.”

The Saturday Night Live veteran often speaks openly about his mental health struggles and past drug use. He has suffered from PTSD after, at the age of seven, losing his father, firefighter Scott Davidson, in the 9/11 attacks, and as an adult has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

The couple shared their gender reveal with fans on Tuesday after previously revealing on Christmas Day that they’re expecting their third child. The video begins with Brown predicting that they will be having a girl, while Katelyn tells their daughter Kingsley Rose, “We have a surprise. We know if the baby in mommy’s tummy is a boy or girl. Do you want to find out?” She added, “See that cake right there? So it’s either pink or blue in the middle. Do you want to cut into it with us?”

The camera focuses on a bee-themed gender-reveal cake topped with the words “What will baby bee?” With their two daughters, Kingsley Rose and Kodi Jane, the couple digs two glasses into the cake’s white icing, revealing the blue-tinted cake beneath.

Katelyn grows emotional and begins screaming with joy at the notion of welcoming their first son into the family, while Kane’s face lights up with a huge smile as he lifts his arms into the air. The video ends with the words “Baby boy Brown, coming 2024.”

In 2023, Brown celebrated his most recent Country Airplay No. 1 with “Bury Me in Georgia,” and followed it with the current release “I Can Feel It.” Over the holidays, Brown also appeared on CBS’ television special New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash. This spring, Brown will return to the road on his 2024 In the Air Tour, which will feature support from Tyler Hubbard, Jon Pardi, Chris Young, Bailey Zimmerman, Cole Swindell, Parmalee, LOCASH and RaeLynn on various dates.
