Nightingale was the first female DJ on BBC Radio 1, where she started in 1970, ultimately becoming the station’s longest serving DJ. In 2010, Nightingale entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving female radio presenter, a record she still holds. Her last broadcast was in late December 2023.

“Annie was a pioneer, trailblazer and an inspiration to many,” her family’s statement continues. “Her impulse to share that enthusiasm with audiences remained undimmed after six decades of broadcasting on BBC TV and radio globally.”

“Never underestimate the role model she became,” the statement went on. “Breaking down doors by refusing to bow down to sexual prejudice and male fear gave encouragement to generations of young women who, like Annie, only wanted to tell you about an amazing tune they had just heard. Watching Annie do this on television in the 1970s, most famously as a presenter on the BBC music show The Old Grey Whistle Test, or hearing her play the latest breakbeat techno on Radio One is testimony to someone who never stopped believing in the magic of rock n’ roll.”

BBC Radio 1 also reflected on Nightingale’s career and her impact. “Annie was a world class DJ, broadcaster and journalist, and throughout her entire career was a champion of new music and new artists,” Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, said in a statement posted to BBC Radio 1’s Instagram account. “She was the first female DJ on Radio 1 and over her 50 years on the station was a pioneer for women in the industry and in dance music. We have lost a broadcasting legend and, thanks to Annie, things will never be the same.”

Born near London in 1940, Nightingale began her career as a journalist and television presenter, later launching a line of clothing shops. She first came on the BBC Radio 1 airwaves in February 1970.

Nightingale is being widely celebrated, with BBC Radio 1’s other famous Annie, Annie Mac, writing on Instagram, “What a devastating loss. Annie Nightingale was a trailblazer, spirited, adventurous, fearless, hilarious, smart, and so good at her job. This is the woman who changed the face and sound of British TV and Radio broadcasting forever. You can’t underestimate it.”

Radio 1’s Pete Tong also commemorated Nightingale, recalling that “Annie was a pioneer, a trailblazer and a role model, who possessed a relentless passion to discover and champion new & groundbreaking music. During her career Annie championed everything from prog rock and punk to acid house, techno, big beat, breakbeat, dubstep and grime.

“Annie’s always been a massive inspiration for me in the sense that she carved out the path at Radio 1,” Tong continued, “proving you could have a career in radio by just staying in your lane and specializing in championing new and exciting artists. Play what you love. She wrote the book on what music radio could be.”

Molly Sims Recalls Hiding in a Bush to Meet Taylor Swift at ‘Eras Tour’ Film Premiere

Molly Sims is just like any other Swiftie — she’s always going to do whatever it takes to cross paths with Taylor Swift, especially where her daughter is concerned.

In her Friday (Jan. 12) appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show, the 50-year-old model revealed the lengths she and her 8-year-old daughter Scarlett May went to in order to meet the “Anti-Hero” singer at her Eras Tour concert film premiere in October in Los Angeles. “We are Swifties,” Sims tells Hudson.

“I didn’t get to take [my daughter] to the concert last year,” she continued. “Last year, [Swift] opened her movie and they shut down The Grove. I went in a little early, I went into a bush. The police were standing next to it, I had four girls with me. I’m like, ‘Do not freaking move, do not go up to her.’”

Luckily, the covergirl’s sneaky efforts paid off. Swift eventually noticed Sims, Scarlett and her daughter’s friends from the red carpet. “She looks at me, and she’s like, ‘Hey!’ She gave us bracelets,” Sims gushed. “I died. I’m so popular with my daughter right now.”

Sims posted photos and videos from the premiere on Instagram, including one adorable clip of Swift trading friendship bracelets with the girls. “Me and my Swifties ? the single hardest thing I have EVER pulled off ❤️” she captioned the Oct. 15 post.

Later that month, Sims shared that her 11-year-old son Brooks’ Halloween costume was the 12-time Grammy winner — more specifically, Swift in her Kansas City Chiefs merch, as she’s often seen wearing at boyfriend Travis Kelce’s games. She even included a photo of Brooks posing as Swift next to a friend dressed up as the tight end.

“#SUGA (@augustd) of #BTS is the face of #ValentinoNarratives,” read the description of an Instagram post announcing the initiative. “For the campaign, authenticity meets Maison codes, seen on the Brand Ambassador. Discover the story and shop every look, online and in boutiques now.”

In the accompanying clip, Suga takes a seat for a press conference while dressed in black shorts and an oversized white shirt with black accents and dark sunglasses. The scene then cuts to Suga chilling in the back of a car wearing an oversized all-white suit with a white embroidered flower on the lapel cut with more images from the presser and video of him signing autographs while wearing a tan jacket, lime green shirt and a string of pearls. The paparazzi-style visual is soundtracked by an ominous instrumental keyboard track.

In an accompanying post, Suga sits on a director’s chair in a fashion studio while rocking a green jacket and matching shirt, black tie and black “one stud” XL sneaker with black socks; many more images can be found on Insta using the #valentinonarratives hashtag.

Suga became the latest member of the South Korean boy band to begin his mandatory 18-month military service in September 2023 when he shared a touching note with ARMY announcing his enlistment. “I was able to come this far thanks to you. And the time has come. I will faithfully complete my duty and come back,” Suga wrote in a message to fans on Weverse. “Be careful of the chilly autumn weather. Stay healthy and see you all in 2025.”

By the end of 2023, all seven members of the K-pop supergroup had begun military service, a commitment that will keep the “Dynamite” group on pause through next year. Label BIGHIT revealed in October 2022 that the group — Suga, RM, V, Jin, Jung Kook, J-Hope and Jimin — would not be able to perform together until next year because of the mandated military service.

Selena Gomez Says Ariana Grande’s Music Makes Her Feel ‘Empowered’: ‘She Is Incredible’

Selena Gomez can’t get enough Ariana Grande. While serving as a guest DJ on SiriusXM Hits 1 Wednesday (Jan. 10), the Rare Beauty founder gushed about her love for her fellow pop star’s empowering anthems.

“Here’s another song I love, Ariana Grande,” said Gomez on the show, just before queuing up the Wicked star’s 2019 smash “7 Rings.” “I cannot do anything fun without listening to Ariana.”

“I feel so empowered and I think she is incredible, and I just have so much fun,” added the Only Murders in the Building actress. “I’m the girl that’s playing Ariana all the time, and I think people kind of notice that, but I love it! I think she’s amazing.”

Two days after Gomez’s on-air shoutout, Grande released her comeback single “Yes, And?” alongside a choreography-filled music video. The “Calm Down” singer was one of countless fans to show her excitement when the Victorious alum first teased her upcoming seventh album on Instagram in December, officially kicking off her return to music after a yearslong hiatus. (Grande’s last album, Positions, came out in 2020.)

“FINALLY,” Gomez commented in all caps under an Instagram post from Grande of pictures and videos from the studio.

Meanwhile, Gomez is also gearing up to release her next album, which she’s been teasing for more than a year. Like Grande, the Emmy nominee hasn’t dropped an LP since 2020, with Rare debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in January that year.

In September, Gomez released what’s expected to serve as her upcoming album’s lead single, “Single Soon.” The track was produced by the star’s now boyfriend, Benny Blanco, and reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Whenever it arrives, however, Gomez’s next record might be her last. “The older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something [besides music] to just settle on,” she said in a recent interview. “I do feel like I have one more album in me, but I would probably choose acting.”

“I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full-time, but apparently, that hobby turned into something else,” she added at the time.

Phil Bauer Named President of DistroKid as Philip Kaplan Moves to Chairman

Leading indie distributor DistroKid has named COO Phil Bauer as its new president, the company announced Thursday (Jan. 11), where he will lead day to day operations. As part of the new leadership structure, founder and CEO Philip Kaplan is transitioning into the role of chairman moving forward.

Bauer has served as COO of the company since 2018. Kaplan, who founded DistroKid in 2013, built it into a DIY distro platform that now serves more than 2 million artists, with mobile apps, a video distribution platform and an AI-powered mastering tool, called Mixea, unveiled last year.

“I’m honored to become DistroKid’s president and humbled by the trust and confidence Philip is showing in me and our talented team,” Bauer said in a statement regarding his promotion. “Philip changed the game when he launched DistroKid with unlimited uploads in 2013, a model which has now been adopted across the industry to the benefit of artists everywhere. His mentorship over the past five years will absolutely carry forward as DistroKid continues to build high quality tools and services that help artists at any level be prolific.”

“When I first started coding DistroKid 12 years ago, I never imagined the immense scale DistroKid would achieve, and the positive impact it would one day have on the music industry,” Kaplan added in a statement. “I’ve relied on Phil’s insight since we first began working together about five years ago, and he’s been instrumental toward our incredible growth and success. I’m excited for this next era, and to help support Phil and continue contributing toward DistroKid’s innovation, culture and progress.”

DistroKid says it distributes as much as 35%-40% of all new music being released around the world, and has processed more than 45 million songs in its decade-plus history. The company also maintains around 20 free tools for artists of all sizes to utilize in creating, producing and uploading their works.

G Herbo Gets 3 Years Probation In Credit Card Fraud Scheme

BET Awards 2023 - Show

G Herbo faced up to 20 years behind bars for a credit card scheme that involved a boutique puppy business, a Jamaican villa, and other illegally obtained assets. The Chicago rapper pleaded guilty to the charges last summer and received three years of probation related to the matter.

As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, G Herbo, 28, was handed down the three-year probation sentence on Thursday (January 11) after using stolen credit cards to finance a scheme that involved the aforementioned puppy business, private jets, and other items.

U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni ordered the rapper, who was born Herbert Wright III and once rapped under the moniker Lil Herb, to pay restitution totaling $139,968 and hand over assets equally that same amount according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

From the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts website:

“On social media, Mr. Wright boasted an extravagant lifestyle. He gave the impression that his use of private jets, luxury cars and tropical villas were the legitimate fruits of his booming rap career as “G Herbo.” However, his lavish lifestyle was shamelessly built on deceit and fraud using stolen account information that inflicted substantial harm on numerous businesses, leaving a wake of victims burdened with financial losses.” said Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy. “This case should serve as a stark reminder that breaking the law leads to prosecution and accountability, regardless of who you are, how many likes you rack up or how many followers you have.”

As was revealed in 2020, G Herbo was able to obtain stolen credit card information from so-called “dark web” sites. The scheme also involved forged identification cards, licenses, and email accounts as seen in the indictment records.

Justin Timberlake Announces Intimate ‘One Night Only’ Show in Memphis

Justin Timberlake is revving up the pop machine. Just days after wiping his Instagram and getting fans excited about a potential new music era, the singer announced a one-night-only hometown show in Memphis slated for Jan. 19 at the 2,300-capacity Orpheum Theater. “Going home,” Timberlake wrote in an Insta post announcing the gig, which featured a picture of a billboard with the show details.

The next slide featured a pre-teen JT in a throwback video, saying, “this is where I come from… this is the Mississippi River and that is Memphis, Tennessee.” The slideshow also included what looked like an itinerary — with all the other items redacted — that included “travel to Memphis Jan. 19 – Orpheum” on his to-do list.

The final slide was an audio file of a mid-tempo, organ driven song snippet that cuts off just as the singer is about to start his vocals.

Timberlake amped up speculation that he’s about to announce the long-awaited follow-up to his musky 2018 Man of the Woods album on Monday when fans noticed that he’d erased all the posts on his Instagram save for his profile picture, which featured a shot of his eyes looking back through a car’s rearview mirror. At present, the show announcement is the only post on JT’s Insta.

The clean-sweep social strategy that has been employed by a number of fellow pop stars lately in advance of albums or big project announcements — including by Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa — amped up speculation about JT6.

At press time Timberlake had not announced any new music, but back in April 2023 longtime collaborator Timbaland teased that “fun” JT was coming back with a “bob-your-head” album. After some time out of the spotlight, Timberlake reunited with his former *NSYNC bandmates last fall for their first song in more than 20 years, the Trolls Band Together single “Better Place.” Then, in November he popped up on a remix of BTS member Jung Kook’s solo single, “3D.”

Timberlake closed out his busy 2023 with a surprise concert at the Dec. 13 opening of the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas, marking his second performance since his name was in a rash of headlines in the wake of the October release of former girlfriend Britney Spears’ tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me. Timberlake appeared to address Spears before performing “Cry Me a River,” which the “…Baby One More Time” singer said in the book she though JT used as “ammunition” in the 2003 track’s iconic music video. “No disrespect,” Timberlake said to the crowd, before jumping into the song.

“Cry Me a River” — inspired by Timberlake’s breakup with Spears — was released as the second single from JT’s debut solo album, Justified, and the video finds JT breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and features a Britney look-alike portraying his former flame.

Check out Timberlake’s announcement below.

The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller With Improved Battery Life Coming Soon, Report

V2 PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Reportedly Coming Soon

Source: Bernard Smalls / @BeanzGotGamez / V2 PS5 DualSense Controller

The best controller right now, the PS5 DualSense Controller, is getting a significant battery boost, according to numerous reports.

Reportedly, PlayStation will address one of the major complaints about the PS5 DualSense Wireless controller, battery life, with the arrival of an “updated” version of the PS5 accessory.

GamesRadar+ noticed a V2 PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller on Best Buy’s Canadian online shop, and according to the leaks, it will have an astounding 12 hours of battery life, a significant improvement from the maximum 5 hours you get out of the current DualSense model.

Outside of the better battery life, the V2 PS5 DualSense Controller will also feature the same features as the original, like headset jack, built-in microphone, and haptic triggers across its rear and face.

Regarding price, PS5 owners will not have to break the bank for better battery life; the new PS5 DualSense Controller is listed at 90 CAD, about $67, and the current model costs $69.

PlayStation has yet to confirm its existence, but it could be waiting for the rumored February State of Play presentation to make the big announcement.

Sony has also been busy filing interesting patents that could hint at the future of new controllers, like one version featuring a touchscreen instead of a touchpad.

That same controller can also use predictive AI to light up particular buttons as analog sticks and shoulder triggers to provide hints to gamers during gameplay.

It sounds impressive, but also so far away.

We welcome a PS5 DualSense Wireless controller that can get us through gameplay sessions without having to wire up to the console after 5 hours.
