Jo-El Sonnier, Grammy-Winning Cajun & Country Singer-Songwriter, Dies at 77

Jo-El Sonnier, the Grammy-winning artist from Louisiana who performed Cajun and country music, has died at age 77.

Sonnier passed away while on tour, Texas country music promoter Tracy Pitcox stated in a post on his Facebook account Sunday (Jan. 14).

He died after suffering cardiac arrest following a show at the Llano Country Opry in Llano, Texas, where he had played for over an hour and received a standing ovation as he ended his performance with his signature “Tear Stained Letter” and an encore of “Jambalaya.” Pitcox says the singer-songwriter “was air flighted to Austin where he was pronounced deceased.”

“It is never easy to lose a legend,” Pitcox said, “but he truly spent his final day doing what he loved — entertaining his fans with his loving wife, Bobbye, by his side.”

Sonnier was born in 1946 to a French-speaking family in Rayne, Louisiana, where he showed an interest in music early on. At the age of three he began to play the accordion, and by age 11 was making his first music recordings. He recorded several singles and albums independently as a teen.

In the 1970s, he signed as a country artist with Mercury Nashville, but made the shift to independent label Rounder Records when he began recording Cajun music.

Sonnier returned to country in the 1980s, signing with RCA. He charted with singles including 1988’s “No More One More Time” and “Tear Stained Letter,” a track originally recorded by Richard Thompson. Actor Judge Reinhold (Beverly Hills Cop, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Santa Clause films) starred in the music video for “Tear Stained Letter.”

Sonnier moved to Capitol Records in the 1990s before making the return to Cajun music at Rounder Records.

Sonnier won a Grammy Award for best regional roots album, for The Legacy, in 2015. It was his first Grammy win, but fifth time being nominated.

In 2017, Sonnier and his sister-in-law Shirley Strange-Allen released a children’s book titled The Little Boy Under the Wagon, based the struggles Sonnier faced growing up autistic in the 1950s in South Louisiana. According to an interview with The Associated Press, he hoped that sharing his story would communicate an important message: “They need to know it’s OK to be different.”

“Once he figured it out and had a diagnosis, he saw ‘This is why the way I thought the way I did. This is why I didn’t fit in. This is why I focused on music 100 percent. This is why I don’t like crowds outside of music,’” said Sonnier’s wife, Bobbye.

“You want to leave something good behind and let somebody embrace that,” Sonnier said to the publication. “When you’re gone, that’s it. One day, we won’t be here. While we are here, let’s try to do the good.”

Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes Are ‘Twinning & Winning’ in New Photos From Chiefs Game

The coats were made by designer Kristin Juszczyk, the wife of San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Swift sported boyfriend Travis Kelce’s jersey number, 87, on hers, while Mahomes’ jacket displayed her husband Patrick’s number, 15.

“Twinning & Winning,” Mahomes captioned an Instagram photo collection from Saturday’s game, which ended in a 26-7 win for the Chiefs.

The Sunday Instagram post mostly consisted of several pictures of Mahomes with Swift, showing off their similar outfits. With a drink in hand, Swift was playful and silly in her poses next to Mahomes.

Juszczyk, who designed the ladies’ Chiefs outerwear, shared her reaction to them wearing her designs on Saturday with a behind-the-scenes video of herself making the coats. “An honor of a lifetime!!!!!” she wrote. “Thank you @taylorswift & @brittanylynne.”

Swift — who sat next to Kelce’s mom, Donna, at the game — wore her ’87’ coat with an all-black ensemble and Louboutin combat boots.

Selena Gomez’s Linda Ronstadt Biopic to Be Directed By David O. Russell

The upcoming Linda Ronstadt biopic has found its director.

Filmmaker David O. Russell has been tapped to direct the upcoming film, which will star Selena Gomez as Ronstadt, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The “Single Soon” singer recently teased the role on social media. On Tuesday (Jan. 9), Gomez shared a photo of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir, Simple Dreams, in her Instagram Stories.

The upcoming film will be produced by James Keach (who also produced the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and the Grammy-winning Ronstadt documentary The Sound of My Voice) along with Boylan, according to the website of Great Eastern Music, a music publisher founded by John Boylan, the “Blue Bayou” singer’s manager. A title for the biopic has not revealed.

It’s not hard to see why Gomez would be a good fit for the role. According to the Only Murders in the Building star herself, she bears a resemblance to the 11-time Grammy winner. “I always used to get told that I look like her,” Gomez previously shared during a 2015 appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest. “And I started listening to her music because of that.”

Russell is a five-time Academy Awards nominee for such films as Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and The Fighter. His latest movie in the theaters was 2022’s Amsterdam, which featured an all-star cast of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington.

Ronstadt, meanwhile, announced her retirement in 2011, citing her Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, but later sharing that she actually has a brain disorder called progressive supranuclear palsy, which resembles Parkinson’s. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 2016. During her decades-long career, she earned 10 top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits, with “You’re No Good” reaching the summit in February 1975.

Fans Choose Ariana Grande’s ‘Yes, And?’ as This Week’s Favorite New Music

Ariana Grande‘s “Yes, And?” has topped this week’s new music poll.

Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (Jan. 12) on Billboard, choosing the pop superstar and actress’ highly anticipated single as their favorite new music release of the past week.

“Yes, And?” brought in 77% of the vote, beating out new music by Jennifer Lopez (“Can’t Get Enough”), Lil Nas X (“J Christ”), Kali Uchis (ORQUÍDEAS), 21 Savage (American Dream), and others.

Grande made her return on Friday with the late-’80s-inspired single “Yes, And?” Dripping with confidence, the upbeat song serves as the lead track for the singer’s anticipated seventh album, which she started teasing online in late December.

The single is built upon the cheeky title, as Grande sings of healing and being done with caring for other people’s projections. “Yes, and?” she asks repeatedly, begging listeners to question why they care so much to comment on her life — and, hopefully, reducing such actions in the future.

The “Yes, And?” music video finds Grande wearing a ballet-inspired outfit and character shoes, completing the look with a hat that pays homage to legends like Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul. The Christian Breslauer-directed clip seems to take inspiration from Abdul’s visual for her own “Cold Hearted,” leaning deeper into the ’80s energy of the song itself.

Grande’s last proper release was 2020’s Positions, which debuted at No . 1 the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set spawned a Billboard Hot 100 chart No. 1 single with its title track.

Her return to music comes after a lengthy break during which she openly chose to focus on her R.E.M. Beauty makeup business and her role in the upcoming live action adaptations of the Broadway musical Wicked, in which she’ll play Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba.

Trailing behind “Yes, And?” on the poll is Lopez’s breezy “Can’t Get Enough,” which brought in 5% of the vote. The summery track was accompanied by a cinematic Dave Meyers-directed wedding-themed video that appears to make winking references to the singer’s love life.

One Thing at a Time continues to have the most weeks at No. 1 among all albums since Adele’s 21 logged 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the tally in 2011-12. One Thing at a Time debuted atop the chart dated March 18, 2023, and spent its first 12 weeks at No. 1 through early June. It then logged another three weeks in a row atop the list in late June and early July, and nabbed its 16th week in charge on the Oct. 14 chart. In the album’s 45 weeks on the list, it has never dipped below No. 6. One Thing at a Time finished 2023 as both the No. 1 year-end Billboard 200 album and Luminate’s year-end top album.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Jan. 20, 2024-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Jan. 17 (a day later than usual due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday in the U.S. on Jan. 15). For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Of One Thing at a Time’s 61,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Jan. 11, SEA units comprise 58,000 (down 3%, equaling 79.81 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 2,000 (down 13%) and TEA units comprise 1,000 (down 25%).

One Thing at a Time’s unit total of 61,000 is the smallest the weekly No. 1 album has seen since the May 7, 2022-dated chart, when Pusha T’s It’s Almost Dry debuted at No. 1 with 55,000 units.

The rest of the new Billboard 200’s top four is comprised of former No. 1s: Drake’s For All the Dogs climbs 3-2 (58,000 equivalent album units; up less than 1%); Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) falls 1-3 (56,000; down 12%); and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 is a non-mover at No. 4 (52,000; down 9%).

Noah Kahan’s Stick Season rises 8-5 – its highest rank since it peaked at No. 3 last June – earning 52,000 equivalent album units (up 7%).

The remainder of the top 10 are all former chart-toppers, with SZA’s SOS ascending 7-6 (just over 43,000 equivalent album units; down 2%); Swift’s Midnights falling 5-7 (43,000; down 6%); Swift’s Lover dipping 6-8 (42,000; down 8%); Zach Bryan’s self-titled album stationary at No. 9 (39,000; down 5%); and Swift’s Folklore steady at No. 10 (34,000; down 5%).

Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. ‘Mean Girls’ Is No. 1 at the the Box Office With $28M Debut

Winter storms and cinema closures in North America didn’t dampen the opening weekend for Mean Girls. The Paramount release, adapted from the Broadway musical and the 2004 Tina Fey movie, earned $28 million in its first three days in theaters according to studio estimates Sunday (Jan. 14). Not accounting for inflation, that’s more than the $24.4 million the first movie made in its opening weekend.

The Mean Girls competition over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend featured several new releases, including the Jason Statham action movie The Beekeeper and the Jay-Z produced biblical satire The Book of Clarence, in addition to a slew of awards contenders capitalizing on buzz from recent nominations and the Golden Globes.

As with Barbie, another enthusiastically pink movie, female audiences made up the vast majority (76%) of opening weekend ticket buyers for Mean Girls. According to exit polls, 70% were between the ages of 18 and 34, which, yes, means that it had appeal for audiences who hadn’t been born when Regina George was first introduced to the world.

“The property is iconic,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution. “Tina Fey is legendary and her contemporary twist has resonated with audiences, particularly the female audience.”

This iteration of Mean Girls stars Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho and Reneé Rap, who played Regina on stage. It was originally planned to go straight to streaming on Paramount+, but the studio pivoted after test scores were positive. Social media played a big part in getting the word out and Mean Girls also inspired groups of friends to go to the movies together. An estimated 40% went with two or more friends.

Fey returned to write and co-star in the new film, which was directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. and cost a reported $36 million to produce. Reviews have been more positive than not, with a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences gave it a B CinemaScore which may not bode especially well for word-of-mouth appeal. Recent musicals like Wonka and The Color Purple scored in the A-range. The studio is optimistic after this weekend though. It also made $6.5 million from 16 international markets.

“It’s no secret that the release calendar is a little light for the first couple months of the year and because of the reception to this film we stand a chance of broadening this audience,” Aronson said. “It really is a crowd-pleaser.”

Amazon and MGM’s The Beekeeper debuted in second place with an estimated $16.8 million from 3,303 theaters. Men made up approximately 62% of ticket buyers and audiences overall gave it a B+ CinemaScore. By the end of the four-day weekend, the studio expects it to have made $19.1 million. Miramax handled the international distribution for The Beekeper, which also grossed $20.4 million from 49 territories.

Third place went to Wonka, which added $8.4 million in its fifth weekend. The Timothée Chalamet-led musical has now made over $178 million domestically and $500 million globally.

“Musicals are on a roll,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. “It seems like a lot of studios run away from putting musical on their films for fear of limiting their audience pool, but I think this is a genre Hollywood should embrace and highlight.”

The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romantic comedy Anyone But You, a Sony release, is turning into a bit of a sleeper success as well, making nearly $7 million in its fourth weekend. By Monday (Jan. 15), its domestic total should be around $56.5 million. Universal and Illumination’s Migration rounded out the top five with $6.2 million in its fourth weekend.

Not everything landed this weekend, though. The Book of Clarence, a faith-based comedy/drama with a starry, ensemble cast including LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard and Teyana Taylor is not off to a promising start. The Legendary Pictures release opened to an estimated $2.6 million from just over 2,000 locations.

Written and directed by the British singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel (stage name The Bullitts), it was self-consciously styled after Golden Age biblical epics like The Ten Commandments. It has also gotten mixed reviews, with 68% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B CinemaScore.

The Walt Disney Co. sent its 2020 Pixar film Soul to movie theaters this weekend as well, where it made $429,000 from 1350 locations in North America. It’s the first of several Pixar movies, including Luca and Turning Red, that Disney is bringing to theaters this winter after all had streaming-only releases on Disney+ during the pandemic.

Hollywood’s awards season is also in full swing, and though many top contenders are already available to watch at home, some are still rolling out in theaters and hoping to capitalize on new nominations and awards shows like last weekend’s Golden Globes. Poor Things, which was a big winner, added $1.8 million from only 580 theaters. All of Us Strangers took in $474,000 from 120 screens. American Fiction expanded nationwide and made $1.9 million from 625 screens. The Zone of Interest, playing on 25 screens, also crossed $1 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

Eminem Asks Rams QB for Favor Ahead of Detroit Lions Playoff Game: ‘You Owe Me’

Eminem, a longtime Detroit Lions fan, has a message for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford: “You owe me.”

In a promo clip on X (formerly Twitter) ahead of the Lions’ playoff game against the Rams on Sunday (Jan. 14), the iconic rapper made a desperate plea to the former Lions QB.

“Stafford, what’d I say? You owe me this favor, bro,” Em said in a video during Saturday’s Chiefs-Dolphins game. “I was there for you when you won it. I was there for you. I was right there. I rapped for you Stafford. Bro, I rapped for you!”

The “Lose Yourself” rapper, who in the clip wears a No. 20 custom Barry Sanders hoodie, is referencing his 2022 Super Bowl halftime show at SoFi Stadium near L.A., where the Rams took home a victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. The memorable performance also featured an all-star hip-hop lineup of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.

Stafford spent 12 years with the Lions before being traded to the Rams in 2021. During that time, the QB lost three playoff games in the first round. Stafford was traded to the Rams for the Lions’ current quarterback Jared Goff.

The Lions — who haven’t won a playoff game since 1992 — will face off agains the Rams at Detroit’s Ford Field on Sunday (Jan. 14). The highly anticipated match-up marks the Lions’ first home playoff game in 30 years and the NFL team’s first-ever at Ford Field.

In a separate clip shared through his Instagram, Eminem also shared his hopes for the coming year. “My New Year’s resolution was for the Lions to win the Super Bowl,” he says. “So, what’s up?”

Actor Jonathan Majors Arrives At Court For Closing Arguments In Domestic Violence Trial

Source: John Nacion / Getty

Jonathan Majors is down bad. The now infamous actor was spotted out and about in a suspect outfit that has drawn the ire of many on social media due to his apparent lack of fashion sense and embrace of the struggle.

The Coretta Scott King advocate was seen rocking a black hoodie, pink and grey joggers, sunglasses, a dad cap and some retro Reebok Pump TZ’s. Every piece mentioned could work by itself, but the way the now former Marvel actor assembled his outfit is what has the place formerly known as Twitter flummoxed.

Perhaps most damning was his decision to tuck the hoodie into his pants. Bruh…

Then, the joggers are rolled up at the bottom, as is one of his hoodie’s sleeves. Mans walking around these streets like this look is appropriate for just about anything but a 90’s throwback party is the nastiest of work.

Who does this? Perhaps this is a signal for help? Or is he just trolling us all?

Regardless, the way Major has been moving even before he was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend is becoming a textbook example of how not to flourish. Most recently, he was interviewed by ABC News (while rocking flared pants) and caught all the slander for calling his girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, his Coretta Scott King. Also, he just got dropped from that Dennis Rodman movie.

But back to the fit, Major is getting absolutely fried for his lack of drip and swag. See for yourself in the gallery.

Taylor Swift, Bundled Up in a Custom ‘87′ Coat, Attends Chiefs-Dolphins Game With Travis Kelce’s Mom

Taylor Swift arrived at Arrowhead Stadium, where temps were in the negatives on Saturday (Jan. 13), to cheer on boyfriend Travis Kelce as the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Miami Dolphins. The singer was bundled up for the bitter, below-zero cold in a winter beanie, black boots and a puffy coat that boasted her support for Kelce’s number, 87.

Swift and Chiefs fans alike immediately took note of her unique ’87’ jacket. The coat was designed by Kristin Juszczyk, wife of San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

Kristin shared the video below via Instagram soon after Swift was photographed wearing it. On her Stories, she commented on Swift rocking her design, writing: “SHE LOOKS AMAZING!!!”

Swift paired the ’87’ coat with an all-black, casual ensemble, topped off with what appeared to be Louboutin combat boots.

While Swift watched the Wild Card playoff game, the camera captured her chatting with Kelce’s mom, Donna. Swift was seen covering her mouth as they talked — perhaps to prevent any gossip among internet detectives, like those who believed they could lip-read Selena Gomez’s whispered conversation with her at last weekend’s Golden Globes.

On Saturday (Jan. 13), the NHL announced that the vibrant new jerseys will be worn by the league’s players during the NHL All-Star Game at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on Feb. 3. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the city of Toronto will host the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend from Feb. 1-3.

The 2024 NHL All-Star jersey collection includes four versions of the jersey (one for each All-Star team) in four colors: blue, red, yellow and white. The NHL shield will feature bubble letters and enlarged dimensions, and the crest is one of the largest to be included on a NHL jersey.

NHL, Adidas and Bieber’s Drew House previously collaborated on a reversible alternate jersey for the Maple Leafs.

“After the tremendous success of our first NHL, Adidas and Drew House collaboration for the Maple Leafs’ Next Gen jerseys, we have looked forward to another opportunity to bring a bold, fashion forward look to NHL jerseys,” Brian Jennings, NHL’s chief brand officer and senior executive VP, said in a statement. “The All-Star Weekend in Toronto is the perfect setting for a fresh perspective on the All-Star jersey. The vibrant colors in this year’s All-Star collection are both youthful and classic and offer the perfect complement to the young NHL talent set to meet in Toronto for this year’s NHL All-Star Weekend.”

Nic Corbett, director of sports marketing and hockey at Adidas, added: “Since our inaugural year of collaboration with the NHL, Adidas has not only elevated but redefined the benchmarks for performance, sustainability, storytelling and design inherent in the iconic NHL All-Star jersey. This season, our partnership with the NHL and Drew House presents a distinctive opportunity to transcend conventional uniform design, seamlessly merging the realms of sport and youth culture. The added layer of enthusiasm stems from the fact that this extraordinary event unfolds in a hockey-obsessed market, amplifying the excitement to unprecedented heights.”
