Linking up with Cool & Dre for his latest cut “Give & Give,” Conway takes a well-deserved trip to Italy where he cruises through streets of the floating city of Venice before politicking with the locals and spitting his bars much to the delight of everyone around him.

“Red Sky” is from 21 Savage’s new LP American Dream, released via Slaughter Gang/Epic Records. It debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 133,000 equivalent album units, becoming his fourth chart-topping set.

Tommy Newport (real name: Oliver Milmine), born in Manchester, England, and raised in Wichita, Kan., has released two solo studio albums in his career: Just To Be Ironic, in 2018, and Glasshead, in February 2023—both on Real Dirty Boy/Silk Ivory. Outside of 21 Savage, he has collaborated with Jazz Cartier (“Jackpot”) and EARTHGANG (“Stargazer”).

Newport, who released his new single “Secret Place” on Friday (Jan. 18), concurrently debuts at No. 35 on the Emerging Artists chart.

As previously reported, all 14 chart-eligible songs from 21 Savage’s American Dream enter the Hot 100, including two in the top 10: “Redrum,” at No. 5, and “Née-nah,” with Travis Scott and Metro Boomin, at No. 10. The debuts up 21 Savage’s total to 103 career Hot 100-charting hits—he becomes just the 16th artist to amass 100 entries or more over the chart’s 65-year history.

Greater Nashville Music Census On the Way to Help Meet the Needs of Nashville-Area Music Community

As Nashville‘s economy continues to boom, the acceleration brings not only an influx of new businesses to Music City, but also concerns for musicians, as many in greater Nashville’s music community face ongoing struggles with issues including cost of living and housing and issues impacting live music venues across the city.

The Nashville Musicians Union AFM Local 257, the Music Venue Alliance Nashville, Belmont University, the Broadway Entertainment Association and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT) have teamed with the organization Sound Music Cities, which has administered similar surveys in 20+ cities, including Austin, Texas and Chattanooga, Tenn., to launch the Greater Nashville Music Census in 2024.

According to the website for the Greater Nashville Music Census, the initiative aims to “gain a better understanding of the current needs of the Nashville-area music community. The census will capture key information about our Nashville music economy to help the city and community make better informed, data-driven decisions to support our music ecosystem moving forward.”

The census is set to go live in mid-February and will survey the greater Nashville region, which includes the 13 counties in and around Nashville.

Fueling the need for the census are concerns that as Nashville’s economy booms, rising housing expenses are forcing many in Nashville’s music industry further from Nashville.

CFMT vp of communications Kelly Walberg said in a statement, “In recent years, many within our music industry have migrated to surrounding counties where the cost of living may remain more affordable. So we feel it is paramount that we survey the full geographic region to truly understand the current landscape of our Nashville music ecosystem.”

“The economic growth being fueled by our amazing music scene in Nashville is also causing so many within the industry to be left behind,” Belmont University assistant professor, music business and LoveNoise founder Eric Holt said in a statement. “Our hope is to give each and every one of them a voice in this census, and come out of it with a clear path towards what solutions are needed most, and soonest.”

Results of the census are expected to be released to the public as early as summer 2024, and will include three sections: a summary report, data deck and a DEI report.

Apple Music to Pay Higher Royalties for Spatial Audio Tracks

Since unveiling Spatial Audio in June 2021, Apple Music has been pushing labels and artists to rework their music in the immersive format. Now, the platform is offering a financial incentive in the form of increased royalties.

In a letter sent out by Apple Music to its partners on Monday (Jan. 22) and obtained by Billboard, the streamer revealed that beginning with month-end royalty payments in January, music available in Spatial Audio — which is supported by Dolby Atmos — will receive a royalty rate up to 10% higher than content not available in the format.

“Pro-rata shares for Spatial Available plays will be calculated using a factor of 1.1 while Non-Spatial available plays will continue to use a factor of 1,” the letter reads. “This change is not only meant to reward higher quality content, but also to ensure that artists are being compensated for the time and investment they put into mixing in Spatial.”

The letter offers an update on the format’s adoption by artists and users, including a claim that more than 90% of Apple Music listeners have experienced the format and that “plays for music available in Spatial Audio have more than tripled in the last two years.” It additionally states that the number of songs available in the format has increased nearly 5,000% since launch and more than doubled over the last year alone. The company further claims that more than 80% of songs to have charted on the platform’s Global Daily Top 100 in the past year are available in Spatial Audio.

Seemingly to deter bad actors, the letter includes a mention of Apple Music’s “zero-tolerance policy against deceptive or manipulative content,” noting the service has a “quality control process that includes flagging content not delivered in accordance with Apple Music’s Spatial Audio specifications and standards of quality.”

Spatial Audio officially rolled out on June 7, 2021. The format, which provides a surround sound experience in users’ headphones, is offered at no additional cost for Apple Music users, seemingly to speed adoption. As part of this effort, Spatial Audio tracks also enjoy enhanced visibility on the app’s home page, sitting higher than even new music releases. Early adopters of the format included Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, J. Cole and Post Malone.

In a June 2021 interview with Billboard, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vp of internet software and services, conceded that encouraging artists to mix their tracks for Spatial Audio would be a challenge given the time, work and financial investment required.

“This is not a simple ‘take-the-file that you have in stereo, processes through this software application and out comes Dolby Atmos,’” Cue said at the time. “This requires somebody who’s a sound engineer, and the artist to sit back and listen, and really make the right calls and what the right things to do are. It’s a process that takes time, but it’s worth it.”

Cher Mourns ‘Moonstruck’ Director Norman Jewison: ‘My Beautiful Golden Man’

“Farewell  Sweet Prince,” Cher wrote on X (previously known as Twitter) on Monday (Jan. 22). “Thank U For One Of The Greatest, Happiest, Most Fun Experiences Of My Life. Without U, I Would Not Have My Beautiful Golden Man. Norman U Made Moonstruck The GREAT FILM.”

She concluded, “NORMAN JEWISON LIVES ON THROUGH HIS WORK.”

Moonstruck, released in 1987, is based on the John Patrick Shanley play and follows Loretta Castorini (Cher), a widowed Italian-American woman who, through a twist of events, falls in love with her fiancé’s hot-tempered, estranged younger brother, Ronny Cammareri (Cage). The film was nominated for six Oscars, including a nod for Jewison for best director. Moonstruck ultimately ended up winning three Oscars: best screenplay written directly for the screen, best actress (Cher) and best supporting actress (Olympia Dukakis).

A seven-time Oscar nominee himself, Jewison received the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences in 1999. Jewison earned best director and best picture Oscar nominations for Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and Moonstruck; received another nom for In the Heat of the Night (1967), a winner for best picture; and added two others for producing The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966) and A Soldier’s Story (1984).

Kali Uchis’ ‘Orquídeas’ Debuts at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums Chart

It’s said that a pregnancy is a blessing, and that couldn’t be more on point for Kali Uchis, who scores her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart with Orquídeas, as the new album debuts atop the list dated Jan. 27. The set’s roaring start arrives after the Colombian artist announced she was expecting her first child with Don Toliver in the music video for “Tu Corazón Es Mío” on Jan. 11.

“Very grateful to have the opportunity to keep growing every release and very grateful to my community,” Uchis tells Billboard.

Orquídeas, Uchis’ second Spanish-language album, was released Jan. 12 via Geffen/IGA, the first day of the tracking week ending Jan. 18. According to Luminate, the 14-track set starts with 69,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. – her biggest week ever.

Of Orquídeas’ first-week sum, streaming activity delivers 39,000 units, a figure equating to 51 million official on-demand streams of the album’s tracks – her largest streaming week ever for an album. Traditional album sales contribute 31,000 (her largest sales week yet), while the remaining balance stems from a negligible amount of track-equivalent album units. On Top Latin Albums, one unit equals to one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.

With Orquídeas’ No. 1 entrance, Uchis bests her only career and first top 10 entry on Top Latin Albums: Sin Miedo (Del Amoy y Otros Demonios), her first Spanish-language full-lenghth, peaked at No. 3 in March 2021. The set delivered the eight-week champ “Telepatía” on Hot Latin Songs and her highest-ranking entry on the overall Billboard Hot 100 (No. 25 high).

Orquídeas concurrently gifts Uchis her second No. 1 entry on Latin Pop Albums, after Sin Miedo ruled for 11 weeks between March 2021 and July 2022. In total her first all-Spanish album has held in the top 10 for 165 weeks since its debut, encompassing the entire stay on the chart.

Elsewhere, Orquídeas begins at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard 200, Uchis’ best performance there, following Red Moon in Venus (No. 4 high, March 2023), and an equal No. 1 debut on Top Albums Sales and Vinyl Albums. On the latter, it becomes the first Spanish-language album by a woman to debut atop the ranking. Bad Bunny is the only other act to debut at No. 1 with a Spanish-language album.

Orquídeas also spawns 12 debuts on the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs chart including the No. 1 start of “Igual Que Un Ángel,” with Peso Pluma. “I honestly wasn’t expecting that! Uchis adds. “I wrote and recorded the song a while ago and was shocked and excited that Peso wanted to jump on that one in particular because I love encouraging artists to step out of their comfort zone when creating.”

With those new debuts, “Labios Mordidos,” with Karol G, rising from No. 36 to No. 14, and the re-entry of “Muñekita,” with El Alfa and JT, at No. 36, the complete album takes over the chart which blends airplay, streaming data, and digital sales.

About which song Uchis relates with the most, she adds: “I deeply relate to all of them because I write all my own music, but I would say my favorite song is probably “¿Cómo Así?” because I feel it’s the most unique.”

Thanks to the new album and standout cuts, Uchis returns to the Billboard Artist 100 chart at No. 2, surpassing her No. 6 position in March 2023. The list measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay and streaming to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Skillet’s John Cooper Says Demi Lovato’s Pro-Choice Song ‘Encapsulates So Much Evil’

Skillet frontman John Cooper is firing at pro-choice activism — and brought up Demi Lovato in the process.

“Guess who else cheers on baby murder — Americans…Eight hundred thousand babies are aborted a year. I looked it up… it’s over a quarter, over 25 per cent of babies each year are aborted in this country,” the Christian rocker said of abortion to PluggedIn. “It’s absolutely crazy. But all of our celebrities cheer it on…The point is that every day will give you new opportunities to explain to your kids, ‘Okay, you know the celebrities that your friends all really idolise? You’ve gotta understand what they’re actually saying — they’re cheering it on.’”

He then specifically mentioned Lovato’s “Swine,” which was released in 2023, on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. “F— what I think, I don’t know a thing, the government knows my body / No, it’s okay, it’s better this way, I’m only a carbon copy / Even if I’m dying, they’ll still try to stop me,” Lovato belts on the track. For a period of one year, Lovato’s net profits from “Swine” will be donated to the Reproductive Justice Fund at the Demi Lovato Foundation, which will, in turn, be directed to three non-profit organizations: NARAL Pro-Choice America, Plan C and The National Network of Abortion Funds.

“In that one song, she encapsulates so much evil,” Cooper said. “In that song, she supplies us with the best pro-life argument we always give, which is that people are not killing their babies because they can’t afford it.”

He continued, “They’re killing their babies because they want to have sex with ‘whoever I want to, whenever I want to. I don’t wanna use birth control. I should be able to do whatever I want.’ It is pure narcissism, pure evil, and then she’s screaming at all the people who are saying that this is murder.”
