Dolly Parton Says Her Husband Definitely ‘Got a Kick’ Out of Her Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Outfit

Dolly Parton definitely scored a touchdown when she shocked the crowd at the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day game at AT&T Stadium rocking a classic Cowboys cheerleader outfit. The belly-bearing uniform with the crop top and short shorts covered in rhinestones shined as the country icon performed a quick set that included her beloved songs “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and a cover of Queen’s “We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You.”

“It turned out pretty cool and my husband [Carl Thomas Dean] liked it. He said, ‘Those shorts were a little too short.’ I said, ‘Jealous?’” Parton laughed while recalling the instantly viral moment to People magazine. “And I said, ‘They weren’t as short as the other girls!’ He was just being funny. I think he thought — because everybody’s making a to-do over it — he thought, well, maybe you shouldn’t be showing your butt at that age. But anyway, he got a kick out of it too,” the 78-year-old singer said.

Parton’s manager Danny Nozell told Billboard at the time that the singer didn’t tell anyone about the cheerleader outfit until it was time to hit the stage. “It was completely her idea. She waited until right before she went to stage and came out of the dressing room to show us all. When she came out, myself, the security and my staff fainted,” Nozell said. “I couldn’t tell the difference between Dolly and the cheerleaders. That is the genius of Dolly, and people are still talking about it.”

By now Dean — who has been married to Parton since 1966 — is probably used to his wife revving up crowds, but to him she’s still just Dolly. As proof, Parton revealed to People the sweet gift he got her for her birthday last week. “It was a glass heart of Carl and I when we were younger, and it was carved into the glass inside,” she said. “You put it on a little light or a little podium and then it has a battery, and you can turn it on. We go around and around and around. I think those very personal gifts like that are always so sweet.”

Johnny Marr Rips Donald Trump For Playing Smiths Songs at Rallies

Please, please, please stop. Johnny Marr, the iconic guitarist with British ‘80s indie icons the Smiths, has called out Donald Trump’s campaign for using the band’s “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” during rallies.

Marr and frontman Morrisey co-wrote the melancholy number, which originally appeared as the b-side of the 1984 single “William, It Was Really Nothing,” and was later included in compilations Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs.

The song, however, should never be included in Trump rallies, Marr insists.

“Ahh…right…OK,” he writes on social media, responding to video confirmation captured at a Trump rally last year in South Dakota. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s— shut right down right now.”

Others posters on X (formerly Twitter) claim that the Smiths’ music has been used to warm-up crowds at multiple Trump rallies recently, including at his event in Laconia, New Hampshire on Monday (Jan. 22).

Across his political career, Trump has fallen foul with a growing list of recording artists. The Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, Linkin Park, John Fogerty, Neil Young, R.E.M., Rihanna, Pharrell, Guns N’ Roses, Steven Tyler and the estates of Leonard Cohen and Tom Petty are among the many artists who’ve issued cease and desist letters to Trump and the former president’s team for using their works at rallies and for campaigns without consent.

The Smiths released just four albums from 1984 until their acrimonious split in 1987: The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). Each is considered a classic.

Marr, with his jangly guitar style that influenced a generation of indie artists, has been busy ever since, as bandleader with Johnny Marr and the Healers, working with Neil Finn, the Cribs, Modest Mouse and other creative projects. He belatedly launched his solo career in 2013 with The Messenger, the first of his five successive top 10 appearances on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

The Kid LAROI Sets New Single ‘Heaven’: ‘This One’s Super Personal’

The Kid LAROI’s next release is direct from the heart.

Spreading its wings this Friday (Jan. 26), “Heaven” is a ballad that studies the Kid’s graduation into a man, and some of the painful experiences along the way. “This one’s super personal for a lot of different reasons,” he writes in a social post. “It’s about evolving and leaving the past behind. Changing the way you once thought and perceived the world. Growing up!”

LAROI’s post is accompanied with an image of the youngster, bags packed in an urban winter wonderland.

Aged just 20, the Gadigal-born artist with Kamilaroi roots has had more highs — and lows — than many of us experience in a lifetime.

Raised in inner-city Sydney, now based in Los Angeles, LAROI (real name Charlton Howard) has led the singles and albums charts in the United States and Australia, logged a record-setting stay at the top tier of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Stay,” his collaboration with Justin Bieber, and accumulated a towering collection of awards.

Among them, ARIA Awards, APRA Music Awards, NIMAs, and, in 2022, the singer and rapper landed a brace of Grammy Award nominations, for best new artist and album of the year.

Those painful experience he writes of include the death of his good friend and collaborator Juice WRLD. During his teens, LAROI endured the trauma of watching Juice die after suffering a seizure at Midway Airport in Chicago, a moment the Aussie recounted for Tommy Oliver’s documentary Juice WRLD: Into the Abyss.

“I don’t wanna ramble too much about it,” LAROI continues in his post announcing “Heaven,” because “it’s better if you just listen lmao but I wanna remind you that it’s never too late to be who you want to be and whatever you may be going through or feeling won’t last forever.. trust me!

The new single arrives some two-and-a-half months after the release of The First Time, his debut studio album, which bowed at No. 3 in his homeland, and cracked the top 40 in the U.S. and U.K.

“Heaven” appears on the deluxe release of The First Time, and was first teased almost a year ago. On it, he sings: “‘Cause I was reckless, drinking every night/ And gettin’ high, nothin’ there behind my eyes/ I was numb inside, and I can’t believe that I even stayed alive ’til you walked up in my life.”

The Kid has several records under his belt. As his mixtape F–k Love (Savage) hit No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart in 2021, LAROI made history as the youngest Australian solo artist to rule the national survey — at 17 years, 5 months and 22 days.

More prizes await. When he tours Australia this October in support of The First Time, LAROI will play stadiums, a feat that will see him join the likes of homegrown stars AC/DC, Sia and Rüfüs Du Sol.

David Beckwith, Publicist and Gatekeeper of Graceland, Dies at 67

David Beckwith, the veteran publicist whose crowning achievement was his work representing Elvis Presley’s Graceland museum since it opened more than four decades ago, has died. He was 67.

Beckwith died Friday in Phoenix (Jan. 19) after his hip replacement surgery was followed by sepsis, fellow publicist Lynn Weiss announced.

Beckwith for many years also represented Wolfgang Puck, his annual Governors Ball dinner at the Academy Awards and Spago. With the chef and agent Swifty Lazar, he arranged a fine dinner at Spago for industry heavyweights who were not at the Oscars, complete with a large-screen TV for them to watch the show.

When Presley’s home in Memphis, Tennessee, was first opened to the public in July 1982, Beckwith helped manage the 700-plus members of the media there for the opening news conference with Priscilla Presley. He continued his work with Graceland and Elvis Presley Enterprises until his death.

Born on April 28, 1956, in Albion, Nebraska, Beckwith graduated from the University of Oregon as a journalism major. His began his career in 1979 at Rogers & Cowan and three years later lanched his own business, The Beckwith Co.

In 1979, he arranged a deal for Moet & Chandon to serve as a sponsor and exclusive champagne of the Golden Globes, with magnums placed on all tables and the label prominently visible. It’s still the official champagne of the awards show.

The publicist also represented Freddie Gershon and Music Theater International along with the entertainment attorney’s annual scholarship for teachers with the Kennedy Center and Stephen Sondheim.

Beckwith was a pioneer in the LGBTQ+ community, serving on the local and national boards of the Human Rights Campaign, and was instrumental in creating Los Angeles’ Outfest, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ film festival.

Survivors include Dietrich Nelson, his partner of 42 years and husband of 15 years, and his pets Edie, Arlen, Daisy and Doris.

Donna De Lory & Niki Haris Talk Potential of Madonna Reunion, Why ‘Vogue’ Is Having a Moment & NYC Club Shows

Could a momentous Madonna reunion with two of her former longtime backing singers be in the works? This week, the Queen of Pop plays a trio of shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden for The Celebration Tour (Jan. 22, 23 and 29). And, perhaps not so coincidentally, Donna De Lory and Niki Haris – who were seen in the Madonna documentary Truth or Dare and in the iconic video for “Vogue” – are performing two of their own shows together just up the street from the Garden on Jan. 27-28.

While the ladies have not worked together in years, could there be any plans for Madonna to drop by one of De Lory and Haris’ gigs at The Green Room 42, or for them to appear onstage with Madonna at The Garden?

Well, De Lory and Haris join the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast this week (listen to their chat, below) to discuss that possibility, and more.

“I have no right to give any information that is not completely confirmed as of this moment,” Haris very carefully tells the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast with a laugh. “With that said, we take joy wherever we can find it — if it’s on our stage, at Madison Square Garden, wherever the joy is. In [Madonna’s] living room. … The bottom line is, we’re in town. … We may just go grab a coffee together. Who knows?”

De Lory adds: “No matter what, we’re just gonna have a great time.”

For years, De Lory and Haris were behind Madonna — supporting the superstar on the road, during television performances on the Grammy Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, and singing on many of her albums and singles. The pair joined Madonna on four tours between 1987 and 2001, with De Lory continuing to perform on two more Madonna tours in 2004-06. Their voices can be heard on many Madonna recordings released from 1987-98, including the Like a Prayer, I’m Breathless and Erotica albums, and singles such as “Vogue,” “Cherish,” “Deeper and Deeper” and “Nothing Really Matters.”

So, with so much recording history behind them, would De Lory and Haris be open to recording with Madonna, on record and in the studio for a song, if the opportunity presented itself?

“I feel for myself,” De Lory says, “and I feel for Niki as well, we would love that. We would love that. And I know that the magic that was always there would be there. … It would be sweet if that happened. … We just all have a great blend and great energy, and that will always be there.”

“I’d love to just sit around a room,” Haris says, “have [Madonna] grab her guitar, Donna go to the keyboard, and let’s just do what we love to do. … God, we just like to sing together. I would rather just sing without an agenda. Just sing.”

While De Lory and Haris are best-known for backing Madonna for years, they’ve also had their own solo careers, and also provided backing vocals individually on albums from the likes of Belinda Carlisle, Whitney Houston, Santana and Selena. In 2016, the pair came together to work on their first album, the Two Friends EP, which was released in 2017. Since then they have continued to release stand-alone tracks, and have hopes of releasing further new material, perhaps setting up camp in Nashville to work with a producer/songwriter to collaborate on new music.

During our chat with De Lory and Haris, we also asked the women about why they think “Vogue” has endured through the year, and influenced such artists as Beyoncé (with the “Vogue”-infused Queens Remix of “Break My Soul”) and Ariana Grande (with her house-inspired “Vogue” cousin “Yes, And?”).

De Lory says: “I knew when we went in to do those vocals at that session, it was a fresh sound… the music was so powerful.” Haris says that we’re in a “society that now is celebrating voguing, celebrating being a drag queen, celebrating [drag] houses … you just have a bigger audience that’s being more accepted” and adds that “‘Vogue’ is such an infectious kind of energy… it’s celebratory.”

Also on the new edition of the Pop Shop Podcast, we’ve got chart news on the debut of Grande’s “Yes, And?” atop the Billboard Hot 100, and how 21 Savage and Kali Uchis make splashy debuts on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Plus, we’re discussing news of Billy Joel soon dropping his first pop single in years, a new Justin Timberlake album on the horizon, and the music-related nominees at the 2024 Academy Awards.

Flavor Flav:
I can hold some notes besides the national anthem.

Rania Aniftos:
We were gonna get into that!

Flavor Flav:
Don’t go there! Don’t go there!

Rania Aniftos:
We were gonna get into that!

Flavor Flav:
Don’t go there!

Ay yo, check this out. This is Flavor Flav, and this right here is Billboard News.

Rania Aniftos:
Hey, everybody! It’s Rania Aniftos with Billboard News, and it’s such an exciting day in the studio today because we have the one and only Flavor Flav. Welcome!

Flavor Flav:
In the building!

Rania Aniftos:
In the building! You are fresh off the release of an A.I. song, A.I. generated, A.I. facilitated track, “Every Where Man” featuring your old Public Enemy pal Chuck D. So tell me a bit about how that came together. What was the inspiration behind it?

Flavor Flav:
My partner Chuck D mentioned to me about doing a record called “Every Where Man” because I’m every … Flavor Flav is everywhere, man. You know what I’m saying? So, me and Chuck sat down. Chuck took the pen, put it to the paper. So really, Chuck D wrote this song. He writes it, I recite it like that, you know what I’m saying? So that’s how this record really came to be because Chuck is always ahead of his time, so we got this song now transposed into, like, 30 different languages. This song in Spanish, I was bugging out because I’m like, “Wow, listen to my voice in Spanish. Listen to my voice in …”

Rania Aniftos:
Korean!

Flavor Flav:
Like, Korean. Yeah, you know, and I never, ever thought that I wouldn’t be speaking Korean. You know what I’m saying? But hey, thanks to A.I.! And not only that, but I’m glad that this is happening because A.I. has been misused so much, you know? And there’s a lot of people that’s not using it correctly, so I feel that I’m one of the first ones to show the example of A.I. being used correctly.

It’s been more than two decades since Fabolous introduced himself to the rap game but for the past few weeks the man has been dropping off new work like he’s looking for his first record deal and we’re not mad at him one bit.

Continuing his world tour music videos, Fabolous comes through with a new clip for “You Did Me Wrong Freestyle” in which the Brooklyn rapper takes to the shores of Sydney, Australia where he links up with Trey Songz and hosts a gang of women on a yacht where they pop some bottles and get lit while out on the open water. Fab still got them bars, b.

Wiz Khalifa meanwhile seems to drop off new work every week for the past few years and in his new visuals to “Not A Drill Freestyle” the mixed martial artist chills in the studio where he rolls up a fat blunt and burns it down before turning up on the mic. How the hell did he fit all that weed in that dutch?! Props.

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Rob49 and Lil Wayne, Saweetie, and more.

Lately, the “Stronger” singer has been fusing her love of rock bands — including Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac — with her chic style by sporting not one, but three vintage-inspired band T-shirts from the popular apparel brand Madeworn.

Her most recent episode — which aired Tuesday (Jan. 23) and you can watch on Peacock — saw the “Because of You” singer interviewing Common in a Talking Heads T-shirt paired with some sleek black flared pants. That’s not the only time she opted for the casual top either: She also showed some love for The Rolling Stones in an episode from Monday (Jan. 22) that featured a Rolling Stones band tee paired with a bold rainbow striped pleated skirt from Le Superbe.

If you’re always singing along to “Dreams” or “Landslide,” then the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper has the perfect style to add to your Fleetwood Mac merch collection. In a episode from Jan. 17, Clarkson took to the stage in a Fleetwood Mac band T-shirt that looked as though it was transported straight from the ’70s, which she elevated in a maxi leather skirt and platform heels.
