The Taylor Swift Bump: How the NFL Has Benefited From the Megastar’s Romance With Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift‘s relationship with Travis Kelce has been a touchdown for the NFL, which has benefited in multiple ways since the two publicly became an item in the fall.

On Sept. 24, the rumored romance between the pop superstar and Kansas City Chiefs tight end was seemingly confirmed when Swift was seen cheering on Kelce alongside his mother, Donna, during a game at Arrowhead Stadium. This was great timing for the league, which had just kicked off its 2023-24 season earlier that month. Since then, Swift has attended multiple Chiefs games, and the networks haven’t been shy about indulging in cutaways to the singer, who has occasionally been accompanied by famous pals like Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Cara Delevingne and Sophie Turner.

The NFL and its network partners didn’t waste any time capitalizing on the phenomenon. On Sept. 29, just five days after Swift’s first appearance and before the couple confirmed their relationship, NBC Sports aired a promo titled “Taylor Made for Sunday Night” for a game between the Chiefs and the New York Jets, scored to — you guessed it — Swift’s 1989 opener “Welcome to New York.” The NFL has also continued to churn out a slew of Swift-related content on its social media channels.

No less an authority than NFL commissioner Roger Goodell summed it up succinctly when he told CBS Mornings in November, “I think it’s great for the league to have that kind of attention. We welcome it.”

Aside from being a fun diversion for some NFL viewers (and, inevitably, a source of annoyance for others), the Swift-Kelce connection has proven to be lucrative for the NFL, which has benefited from the pairing in several concrete ways. As a globe-dominating superstar whose Eras Tour has only further catapulted her into the stratosphere, Swift is one of the few celebrities with the power to singlehandedly lift the nation’s most successful sports league even higher. The boost has been particularly strong among the female demographic: Though women previously made up roughly 50% of the viewing audience for NFL games, according to the league, they’ve been tuning in at higher levels than ever before.

See below for all the ways Swift has provided a material benefit to the NFL, the Chiefs organization and Kelce himself since the saga began.

Travis Kelce’s Dad Says He Didn’t Recognize Taylor Swift at First

Travis Kelce‘s dad is recently converted Swiftie — to the extent that he actually didn’t recognize Taylor Swift when he first met her.

“When Travis has a lot of friends coming into town to the game, everyone meets at his house, although he’s not there,” Ed Kelce told Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan this week. “Taylor walks in with a security guy, and I look at her, and I say [to my girlfriend], ‘Oh my god, I know this kid, but I don’t know what her name is.’ Jeez, you know, like a real idiot. And [my girlfriend] says, ‘You don’t know her? This is Taylor Swift, you idiot.’”

He continued, “I don’t know if it’s crazy…Yes, he’s dating Taylor. Yeah, there’s eyes on you every place you go. It’s funny because last year, Donna [Kelce] and I – were shown on TV screens, and we had some articles that were done. So, our [names were] out there. We were so popular, the Commissioner offered to let us sit in the box for the Super Bowl… More people recognize us since he started dating Taylor, though – I’ll be [in] the grocery store, somebody will smile and say, ‘Hey!’ Come over and say [hi], and I have no idea who they are. That has certainly picked up and become more frequent by a long shot than the before Taylor days.”

“My grandma died and then I saw a bunch of butterflies, which I think is supposed to mean something,” Orlando said of the butterfly imagery throughout his merch. “I’m trying to put my face and name on things less. I wear artist merch if it’s cool.”

The star, who is gearing up to head out on a European tour this spring, said that he loves the continent because “it’s so different and so cool. I love the road signs. I love the trees, it’s sick. People are great. The concerts are insane, and the crowds are insane.”

He’s also hoping to head back to North America for another tour. “There’s an exceedingly good chance that I’ll be doing shows in North America this year, it just won’t be The Ride tour. A new era.”

White House Slams Elon Musk Sharing Election Misinformation On X

Elon Musk has been accused of spreading misinformation about the 2024 presidential election by the White House, causing concern.

As the 2024 presidential election season is getting into full swing, the White House and the campaign team for President Joe Biden have alleged that Elon Musk is purposely sharing misinformation about the election on X, formerly Twitter, and preventing actual fact-checking. “It is profoundly irresponsible to spread false information and sow distrust about how our elections operate,” said Biden campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, to the New York Times, adding: “It’s even more dangerous coming from the owner of a social media platform. We will continue to call out this recklessness as we carry out President Biden’s commitment to protecting our elections.”

The statement is the first direct accusation by the campaign, and it marks another point of contention between Musk and Biden. Musk has been openly contemptuous of President Biden after his Tesla electric vehicle company was excluded from White House events. Since his acquisition of X, the tech billionaire has implored those following him on the social media platform to vote Republican.

Harmeet K. Dhillon, a lawyer representing former President Donald Trump, said that the moves made X “a much better place for conservatives,” praising Musk. Musk has also dismantled X’s system for flagging fake election content, stating that it amounted to election interference in addition to amplifying false claims of undocumented immigrants voting in American elections.

The defiance by Musk is still present, even as advertisers have registered complaints that allowing such disinformation and content would further harm democracy in the nation. These same charges have been levied against X by the European Union, which filed a report late last year noting how in comparison to other social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, instances of election interference content were high on X.

Linda Yaccarino, the chief executive at X, has been steadily refuting Musk’s claims of removing the integrity team, pointing to the Community Notes feature and saying there will be expansion. Stephen Richer, the Maricopa County, Arizona county recorder, still has his concerns over Musk’s behavior. “Whether it’s President Trump or Mr. Musk talking about this and keeping it very much a top-of-mind issue, that can potentially make our lives more challenging,” he said.

That’s a whole lot of announcements, and there’s new music too. These are the best new dance tracks of the week.

Carlita, “Cash for Love’

Turkish-born producer Carlita had a very big 2023, racking up streams and touring the world playing shows and festivals including Coachella, Glastonbury and Burning Man. (Many of them alongside DJ Tennis, who she plays with as Astra Club.) Now she’s aiming for a similarly massive 2024, with those efforts including “Cash For Love,” a deep house trip of a track built around vocals finely chopped into a hooky melody which altogether demonstrates Carlita’s penchant for lush, hypnotic productions that balance depth, toughness and a cool sort of beauty. The track is out via CircoLoco Records. Astra Club is headlining Space in Miami on Feb. 3, and Carlita will return to Coachella in April.

Purple Disco Machine & ÁSDÍS, “Beat of Your Heart”

German disco maestro Purple Disco Machine does it again with “Beat of Your Heart,” a collab with velvet-voiced Icelandic singer ÁSDIS. Like so much of the producer’s work, the track manages to heavily incorporate pop-forward ’80s synth without veering into pastiche. Recorded in the producer’s Dresden studio, the song comes with a music video situated on both a nightclub dancefloor and within the vital organ referenced in the title. The producer will play Coachella this April and launch a European tour in the fall.

The Temper Trap, “Sweet Disposition” (John Summit & Silver Panda Remix)

Many producers have successfully — often epically, sometimes tearjerkingly — remixed The Temper Trap’s 2008 indie pop classic “Sweet Disposition” (we’re looking at you, Swedish House Mafia). But John Summit and Israeli melodic techno duo Silver Panda prove that there’s still juice to be squeezed here with their own fresh edit. Out on Summit’s Experts Only label, the remix (unsurprisingly) takes the song in a melodic house direction, with the trio in moments paring the production down to only its most essential parts before ramping the whole the back up to a dark, pummeling place that gives the now 16-year-old hit a very current sound of dance music update.

Rinzen feat. Shallou, “Burnin’”

Los Angeles-based producer Rinzen has been releasing meticulously made house and techno with soul for upwards of seven years, in the process having caught the attention of Richie Hawtin, Rüfüs du Sol and deadmau5, all of whom Rinzen has supported during live shows. He’s releasing his debut album, Bend To The Light, on April 5 through Lane 8’s label This Never Happened, with the album’s lead single “Burnin” — a steamy, sleek melodic house collaboration with L.A.-based singer/producer Shallou — setting a high bar for the rest of the project.

Bad Tuner, “24 Hours”

New York City-based producer Bad Tuner makes his debut on Foreign Family Collective / Ninja Tune with “24 Hours.” Evoking the acid-soaked sounds of peak era Chemical Brothers, the song achieves a thrilling, hectic kind of grittiness, but holds a deep message about connectedness. Says the producer: “Social media can create a false sense of connection in the sense that you’re seeing snippets of everyone’s lives from a one-sided lens… Music on the other hand — through public performance, through community, and group listening is a universal language — it is a means to connect and share. It is both the musician and the fans that make a show special, they feed on each other’s energy. In the crowd you dance with a stranger, you look over and see your friends enjoying the song you love, and when there is nothing to say you can just listen!”

HARDY, Kane Brown Hit Country Airplay Top 10, Nate Smith’s ‘Fire’ Rages On

HARDY notches his fourth top 10 as a recording artist on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Truck Bed” revs from No. 12 to No. 9 on the Feb. 3-dated tally. It increased by 2% to 18.9 million in audience during the Jan. 19-25 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song is the sophomore single from HARDY’s The Mockingbird & The Crow, which launched at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart dated Feb. 4, 2023, marking his first leader. It follows “Wait in the Truck” (featuring Lainey Wilson), which hit No. 2 on Country Airplay last April.

Prior to “Wait in the Truck,” HARDY’s “Beers on Me,” with Dierks Bentley and BRELAND, led Country Airplay for one week in April 2022 and “One Beer,” featuring Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson, ruled for one frame in December 2020.

HARDY has co-written 11 Country Airplay No. 1s, including those two chart-toppers; he first reigned as a writer thanks to Morgan Wallen’s “Up Down,” featuring Florida Georgia Line, in June 2018. “Truck Bed” is HARDY’s 14th top 10 as a writer. He co-authored “Truck Bed” with Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson and Hunter Phelps.

Brown’s 12th Top 10
Kane Brown’s “I Can Feel It” enters the Country Airplay top 10 pushing 11-10 (18.9 million, up 2%). He achieves his 12th top 10, with his latest following five consecutive No. 1s, each of which dominated for one week: “Bury Me in Georgia,” which led last September; “Thank God,” with Katelyn Brown, his wife (February 2023); “Like I Love Country Music” (August 2022); “One Mississippi” (March 2022); and “Famous Friends,” with Chris Young (July 2021).

Brown logged his first of 10 Country Airplay No. 1s with “What Ifs,” featuring Lauren Alaina, for two weeks in October 2017. He subsequently led with “Heaven” (two weeks, May 2018); “Lose It” (one week, December 2018); “Good as You” (one, June 2019); and “Homesick” (two, March 2020). He has also hit the top 10 with “Cool Again” (No. 3, September 2020).

Still on ‘Fire’
Nate Smith’s “World on Fire” leads Country Airplay for a seventh total and consecutive week (34.2 million, down 4%). It became his second straight career-opening No. 1, following “Whiskey on You,” which dominated for two weeks last February.

“World on Fire” marks the first title to crown Country Airplay for at least seven frames since Morgan Wallen’s crossover smash “Last Night” reigned for eight beginning last May.

Queer Jams of the Week: New Music From Fletcher, Lil Nas X, Brittany Howard & More

Another week means another set of new tunes from your favorite queer artists. Billboard Pride is proud to present the latest edition of Queer Jams of the Week, our roundup of some of the best new music releases from LGBTQ artists.

From Fletcher’s delicate new pop single to Lil Nas X’s introspective new song, check out just a few of our favorite releases from this week below:

Fletcher, “Lead Me On”

Throughout her short-but-lively career, pop singer-songwriter Fletcher has proven to be particularly adept at creating emotive pop ballads about the messiest parts of love. But with “Lead Me On,” the singer’s latest single off her forthcoming album In Search of the Antidote, Fletcher takes on new meaning. While the thrilling guitar-and-drum-led melody echoes back to songs of Fletcher’s past, the lyrics play double duty — the words let the singer fall down the rabbit hole of a new romantic interest, or they help her follow a path toward becoming a better version of herself. However you interpret the star’s new song, one thing’s for certain: it’s a bonafide banger.

Lil Nas X, “Where Do We Go Now?”

Lil Nas X’s detractors love to claim that his songs lack substance — so the superstar decided to show them exactly what he’s capable of on “Where Do We Go Now?” The emotive soft-rock ballad, which appears in his new documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, sees Lil Nas X searching for meaning in the space he occupies — he’s already become a pop icon at age 24, so what is meant to do next? The song doesn’t provide easy answers to the star’s complex question, but it does show just how versatile Lil Nas X can be as a forward-thinking artist.

Brittany Howard, “Prove It To You”

Brittany Howard wants you to dance — she just also wants you to think while you’re busy tearing up the dancefloor. “Prove It To You,” the latest single off the performer’s forthcoming album, breaks out from Howard’s past discograhpy, embracing pure dance aesthetics to create a deliriously fun sound. As bass bumps and synths flitter in and out of your ears, Howard’s voice reminds you that she’s also a phenomenally good songwriter: “I’ve never been good at saying what I mean/ Every time I try, it comes out incomplete,” she shares in the song’s opening lines. “Believe me, baby/ I will show you how I feel for you right now.”

Jade LeMac, “Narcissistic”

We often get to hear songs of people figuring out their lover is toxic — but Jade LeMac is embracing her own toxicity on the thrilling “Narcissistic.” Throughout the pounding pop track, LeMac paints a picture of an imbalanced relationship where she is more than happy to play the part of the villain. With a set of moody synths permeating every inch of the song, LeMac directs the listener’s attention with a gentle touch and deliciously stern lyrics, perfectly laying out why she’s an artist to keep your eye on.

Cakes Da Killa feat. Stout, “Mind Reader”

Leave it to an artist as multifaceted as Cakes Da Killa to give you a song that revels in its own volatility. “Mind Reader,” Cakes’ new track off his forthcoming album Black Sheep, follows the celebrated MC as he flexes his supernatural flow and reminds his listeners that he’ll “never code switch, I shape-shift, it’s drastic.” Much like his words, the song’s club production never confines itself to one space — moving between four-on-the-floor, house and even jazz as featured guest Stout croons over an ecstatic chorus, “Mind Reader” serves as yet another reminder that Cakes Da Killa is one of the best to ever do it.

Cavetown, “Let Them Know They’re on Your Mind”

DIY artist Cavetown could have easily returned with a gorgeously-written, minimally-produced ballad, and fans would have loved it — instead, the indie star decided to give fans something unexpected. “Let Them Know They’re on Your Mind” is a chaotic little thing; a song that shifts effortlessly between Cavetown’s quieter indie sensibilities, and balls-to-the-wall pop-rock production that makes it a thrilling listen everytime you press play.

Isaac Dunbar, “Apartment A”

There is a unique chaos that comes with attending a crowded house party in New York City — a chaos that Isaac Dunbar brilliantly bottles on “Apartment A.” The pop singer’s latest track basks in its own revelry, inviting the listener in the door for a bacchanalian celebration. Fuzzy production and relentless drums keep the song in a constant state of hyper speed, as Dunbar wails that he’s looking for “love, no ricochet.”

Check out all of our picks on Billboard’s Queer Jams of the Week playlist below:
