Roc Nation Shoots Down Rumors Of A New Jay-Z Album

HipHopWired Featured Video

Los Angeles Premiere Of Sony Pictures'

Just when we thought Hov was ready to reintroduce himself to the rap game, it seems like chatter about a new Jay-Z album in 2024 was much ado about nothing.

Over the weekend, social media was buzzing with rumors of a new Jay-Z album after video director Hidji took to his IG stories and shared a picture that featured a clapperboard that had the production titled listed as “JAY Z – 2024 ALBUM.” Naturally, everyone assumed that this was happening and Hov would return with some new work in this new year.

Unfortunately, it seems like it’s not meant to be as the official Roc Nation X account refuted the rumors by simply replying, “That’s news to us” to the post circulating on social media.

Well, that was exciting for a few minutes. It’s been six years since Jay-Z dropped his last album, 4:44, and though the project went platinum only a week after its release, Jay hasn’t dropped any new full-length projects since.

In an attempt to make up for his absence from the rap game, Jay did drop a verse the length of an EP on DJ Khaled’s “God Did” but his day-ones want a new album already.

Hopefully, everyone over at Roc Nation is just playing dumb and Jay does indeed have a project on the way in 2024, but it seems like that might be something they’re playing close to the chest for the time being as they’re denying any knowledge of a brand new joint from Hova the Gawd.

What do y’all think? Is Jay-Z dropping a new album this year and keeping it secret? Let us know in the comments section below.

Taylor Swift Parties With Cara Delevingne, Keleigh Sperry, Kylie Kelce & More at Chiefs-Ravens Game

Taylor Swift seemed to have an enchanted time at the AFC Championship game Sunday (Jan. 28), where boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs earned their place at this year’s Super Bowl by triumphing over the Baltimore Ravens.

In a slew of photos shared to Instagram Stories by the pop star’s close friend Keleigh Sperry, Swift parties with a large group of friends and fellow Chiefs fans in her box suite at M&T Bank Stadium in Maryland. In one snap, the “Anti-Hero” singer — wearing a bright red sweater, matching lipstick, black tights and boots — wraps Sperry and Cara Delevingne in a hug next to Kylie Kelce, who is married to Travis’ brother and Eagles center Jason Kelce.

In another picture, Swift models a “KC Conference Champions” cap while once again hugging Sperry, who is married to Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller. The model-actress, who earlier this month attended the Golden Globes as Swift’s date, also shared a behind-the-scenes photo of the pop star grinning and pumping her fist next to Travis’ parents, Ed and Donna Kelce, Jason, and Brittany Mahomes, who is married to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Sperry also shared a picture of just her with Kylie, which she captioned, “My girl.”

Ross Travis, Keleigh Teller, Cara Delevingne and Taylor Swift look on during the first quarter in the AFC Championship Game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs at M&T Bank Stadium on Jan. 28, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Swift and her A-list group of friends have become a mainstay at Chiefs games since the 12-time Grammy winner started dating Travis last year. Fans are hopeful she’ll round out the NFL season by attending the Super Bowl Feb. 11, although she’ll likely be cutting it close to make it to Las Vegas in time; the “Karma” musician is set to perform an Eras Tour show in Tokyo the day before, meaning she’ll have to catch a flight quickly after the concert is over.

The AFC Championship did, however, mark a first in Swift’s game-day appearances. Instead of keeping to her box and the stadium’s private hallways after the game concluded, she joined Travis down on the field to help celebrate Kansas City’s victory, kissing the tight end several times on camera. She also stuck around to watch No. 87 give a speech to Chiefs Kingdom, during which he proclaimed: “You gotta fight for your right to party!”

Watch Ed Sheeran Fall Down, Then Get Up Again Like a Champ

It’s not the fall that hurts, it’s when you hit the ground. That lesson is not lost on Ed Sheeran, who posted a video on Sunday (Jan. 28) of a close-call near-fall he had while making an entrance to the stage during a recent date on his Mathematics world tour.

In the clip, Sheeran is sprinting up to the stage as a crowd shouts his name, only to get his foot caught on the last step, which causes him to pitch forward. With his trusty acoustic guitar in hand, Sheeran briefly crashes to his knees, but almost instantly recovers and hops up to strum his instrument while turning around to the below-stage void behind him with a knowing smile.

“Styled it out,” Sheeran wrote in an Instagram post featuring the video, which ends with the iconic gif of Keanu Reeves giving a rain-soaked thumbs up from 1991’s Point Break. Sheeran’s elegant recovery earned some plaudits from a few famous followers, with Natasha Bedingfield commenting “Quickest getting up ever,” Steve Aoki adding “Yesss!! Nailed it,” Gavin DeGraw giving Ed props by saying, “nobody noticed” and Diplo writing “crushed it.”

Sheeran spent much of 2023 on the road playing stadiums across Australia/New Zealand and North America before picking up the tour’s dates in the Middle East earlier this month with gigs in Bahrain and the UAE. The tour touched down at Kyocera Dome Osaka in Osaka, Japan on Jan. 27 for the first of a two night run at the venue, where it appears the tripping video was shot.

The Mathematics tour is slated to continue into late 2024 with additional shows across Asia and Europe through a Sept. 8 show at the Larnaca Marina in Cypus.

Jack Harlow Scores Career-Best Fourth Week Atop Billboard Hot 100 With ‘Lovin on Me’

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” lands a fourth nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. With the song, which first led in early December, the rapper rewrites his longest reign on the chart, among his three leaders, after “First Class” ruled for three weeks in April-May 2022. He has also reigned with “Industry Baby,” with Lil Nas X, for one week in October 2021.

Plus, singer-songwriter Teddy Swims’ first Hot 100 top 10, “Lose Control,” becomes his first top five hit, jumping from No. 8 to No. 4. It also takes over as the week’s top-selling song.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated Feb. 3, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Jan. 30. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Harlow’s “Lovin on Me,” released on Generation Now/Atlantic Records, drew 74 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 10%) and 27.4 million streams (up 3%) and sold 6,000 downloads (down 11%) in the Jan. 19-25 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The single rebounds from No. 2 for a fifth week atop the Streaming Songs chart; adds a second week at No. 1 on Radio Songs; and dips 2-3 after two frames atop Digital Song Sales. “Lovin on Me” concurrently leads the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same methodology as the Hot 100, for an 11th week each.

The track is currently a standalone single from Harlow, whose most recent album, Jackman., debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 last May, becoming his third top 10 set. (The song’s hook samples singer Delbert “Dale” Greer’s 1995 track “Whatever.”)

Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” rises 3-2 on the Hot 100, following four nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in October, and Tate McRae’s “Greedy” returns to its No. 3 best, from No. 4.

Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” bounds 8-4 on the Hot 100, two weeks after it became his first top 10. It concurrently becomes his first leader on a Billboard songs chart, ascending 3-1 on Digital Song Sales (7,000, up 22%). It also pushes 9-6 on Streaming Songs (18.6 million, up 12%) and 23-18 on Radio Songs (30.7 million), up 12% in each metric.

Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, lifts 6-5 on the Hot 100, after it led for a week upon its debut last September. It tops the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts for a 22nd week each and Hot Country Songs for an 18th frame.

Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” falls to No. 6 on the Hot 100, a week after it soared in as her eighth career leader. In its second week of release, it drew 25.9 million in radio reach (up 5%) and 16.6 million streams (down 39%) and sold 3,000 (down 95%). The lead single from her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, due March 8 (as announced Jan. 17), claims a second week at No. 1 on the multimetric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Doja Cat boasts two songs, back-to-back, in the Hot 100’s top 10, both from her album Scarlet: “Agora Hills” returns to the region at a new No. 7 high, from No. 11, as it wins top Airplay Gainer honors (57.7 million, up 14%), and “Paint the Town Red” backtracks 7-8, after it led for three nonconsecutive weeks beginning in September.

SZA’s “Snooze” holds at No. 9 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2, as it leads the multimetric Hot R&B Songs chart for a 26th week.

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, 21 Savage’s “Redrum” falls from No. 5, where it debuted a week earlier, to No. 10. Parent album American Dream rules the Billboard 200 for a second week.

Lil Nas X Breaks Down the ‘J Christ’ Backlash: ‘It Wasn’t My Chaos Anymore’

It’s been a few weeks since Lil Nas X made headlines for his controversial comeback single “J Christ,” and the singer is ready to talk frankly about the public’s reception of his latest track.

During his appearance on the podcast On Purpose with Jay Shetty, the rapper explained that he felt the messaging of his song was taken out of context. “[‘J Christ’] was this thing that artistically was just supposed to be like, I’m returning … I’m back like Him, you know what I mean?” he said. “It turned into this whole thing where it was me trying to dunk on Christians or something, and that was never what it was. Never.”

Lil Nas agreed with some of the backlash, saying that the anger over a video of him eating communion wafers “looks really bad on paper,” adding that he did properly apologize for releasing that video. “This [was a] thing that I thought was just like a little jokey fun video. I also had to think about how many of my family members are Christian, like my grandmothers and stuff, and like aunties and things like that,” he said. “And I’m like, ‘Wow, do they see this as that too?’ If they do, you know, that’s really messed up. And it makes me sad.”

But the rapper said the he did not apologize for the song or the music video because he stood by his intended messaging. “That message turned around and I didn’t know how to do anything with it. It wasn’t my chaos anymore. It was the world’s and anything anybody said was true because that’s who I am as a person,” he said. “I’m this troll and I want to make these people mad. And so everybody can run with that. And there’s nothing I can do about that. I can say as many things as I want, but knowing my history, they look right, I look wrong.”

The interview comes after Lil Nas X spoke publicly about the release of “J Christ” in a video posted to his Instagram. In the original clip, the rapper explained that those online claiming that he was insulting Christianity with his song were mistaken. “I knew there would be some upset people simply because religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people,” he said. “But I also didn’t mean to mock — this wasn’t a f— you to the Christians. It was literally me saying I’m back like Jesus.”

Elsewhere in his interview on On Purpose, Lil Nas said that he’s now reflecting on what his future releases will look like, where his music will go in the future. “You’ve been so focused and zoned in on what you’re doing, and you push your art out into the world and it’s kind of received negatively by the majority … but then also understanding why, you know, and having to see it through,” he said. “So I guess that’s where I’m at right now and my next move, you know, the things that I’m planning on right now, I feel like somewhere in here that’s gonna be this magical moment that I can’t even take credit for.”

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Inspire United Airlines’ Custom Flight Numbers Ahead of Super Bowl

fans traveling to Las Vegas ahead of Super Bowl 2024 are sure to be flying in “Style.” In celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs advancing to the final round – having defeated the Baltimore Ravens at the AFC Championship game Sunday (Jan. 28) — United Airlines has announced custom flight numbers inspired by tight end Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

In total, the airline unveiled three specialized flights honoring the athlete and his superstar girlfriend, each of which will transport fans from Kansas City International Airport to Las Vegas’ Henry Reid International Airport Feb. 8 and 9 ahead of Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 11). The first trip is simply named “UA 1989” in honor of “the album of the Chiefs’ popular superfan,” according to a press release. (It also happens to be the year both Swift and Kelce were born.)

The second, “UA 2287,” combines Swift’s famous Red single “22” with Kelce’s jersey No. 87. The third, “UA 1587,” features the jersey numbers of both Kelce and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“These special flights will provide direct flights for more than 1,000 Kansas City fans to get to Vegas to cheer on the Chiefs,” United continued in the release. “United is flying its largest Super Bowl schedule ever this year adding more than 40 special flights total, which will help 14,000 more fans across the country get to the big game.”

Swift herself will have to catch a long flight from her Feb. 10 Eras Tour show in Tokyo if she hopes to make it to Sin City in time to watch Kelce play at the Super Bowl — but she does have access to her own selection of private jets. Once in Vegas, the Chiefs will face off against the San Francisco 49ers, who won their own championship game against the Detroit Lions at the NFC finals also on Sunday.

And, worry not, 49ers fans: United also has a couple special flights in store for the Chiefs’ upcoming opponents. Two planes leaving from San Fran ahead of the big game will fly under the identifiers “UA1995” and “UA 1849,” respectively named in honor of the year the Cali team last won the Super Bowl and the year of the state’s famous “Gold Rush” (which is, coincidentally, the title of another Swift song).

Jimi Hendrix Lawsuit Headed To Trial After UK Court Says Bandmates Can Sue Sony Over Royalties

A contentious lawsuit over Jimi Hendrix’s music is going to trial, after a London judge ruled that the heirs of his former bandmates could continue to sue Sony Music over the rights to three classic albums.

The estates of bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell say they own a share of the rights to three albums created by the trio’s Jimi Hendrix Experience, and they’ve been battling in court for more than two years to prove it.

Sony had argued that the case should be dismissed because Redding and Mitchell both signed away their rights in the early 1970s shortly after Hendrix died, but a judge on London’s High Court ruled Monday that the dispute – over “arguably the greatest rock guitarist ever” — must be decided at trial.

“My overall conclusion is that the claims in respect of copyright and performers’ property rights survive and should go to trial,” Justice Michael Green wrote in his ruling, obtained by Billboard. The judge wrote that Redding and Mitchell’s heirs had “a real prospect of succeeding” on their argument that the decades-old releases “do not provide a complete defence” for Sony.

It’s unclear when the trial will take place. A rep for Sony did not immediately return a request for comment on the court’s decision. An attorney for the Hendrix estate, which is not formally a party to the U.K. case, did not immediately return a request for comment.

In a statement to Billboard, Redding and Mitchell’s attorneys said the ruling would mean “we can hopefully obtain some justice for the families” of the two musicians. “No one is denying that Jimi Hendrix was one of, if not, the greatest guitarist of all time. But he didn’t make his recordings alone, and they could not have achieved any success without the contributions of Noel and Mitch.”

Hendrix teamed up with Redding and Mitchell in 1966 to form the Experience, and the trio went on to release a number of now-iconic songs before Hendrix’s death, including “All Along The Watchtower,” which spent nine weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968 and peaked at No. 20.

The current fight kicked off in 2021, when Redding and Mitchell’s heirs sent a letter in the U.K. claiming they own a stake in Hendrix’s music and arguing that they’re owed millions in royalties. Hendrix’s own estate and Sony responded a month later by preemptively suing in New York federal court, aiming to prove they were in sole control of the music. Redding and Mitchell’s heirs then filed their own case against Sony in British court.

The transatlantic dispute centers on agreements that Redding and Mitchell signed in New York in 1973 to resolve litigation after Hendrix died suddenly at the age of 27. In the settlement, the two men agreed not to sue Jimi’s estate and any record companies distributing his music in return for one-time payments — $100,000 paid to Redding and $247,500 to Mitchell.

Sony and the Hendrix estate have argued in court filings that those “broad releases” prohibit Redding and Mitchell’s heirs from making any legal claim to the band’s music. The heirs, on the other hand, say the two men died in poverty and that they’re legally entitled under U.K. law to a cut of the lucrative Hendrix Experience music they helped create.

On Monday, Justice Green did not rule on that core dispute, saying he “cannot decide those contentious issues” about the power of the release agreements signed by Redding and Mitchell. Instead, he ruled simply that there are “sustainable arguments on such issues that will have to be decided at a trial.”

In statement, a rep for the Redding and Mitchell estates said they looked forward to the trial. “Noel and Mitch died in penury despite being two thirds of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and owning the copyright in the recordings jointly with Jimi,” Edward Adams said. “We see our case as carrying a torch for Noel, in particular, who spent over three decades seeking justice.”

The trial will come after years of jockeying over whether the dispute should be heard first in American or British courts. In May, a U.S. federal judge ruled that the English litigation could take precedence, citing the fact that it had kicked off nearly a month earlier than the American case, and that a British appeals court had already ruled that their case could move forward. The U.S. case, filed in Manhattan federal court, is currently paused.

After Years of Beef, Snoop Dogg Now Says This Is Why He Has ‘Nothing But Love and Respect’ For Donald Trump

After bonding on The Apprentice back in 2007, Snoop Dogg and former one-term president Donald Trump have had an up-and-down relationship ever since. The nadir of their unlikely friendship came during the twice-impeached Trump’s term in the White House, during which Snoop released the Trump-bashing single “M.A.C.A. (Make America Crip Again).”

The 2017 song featured the lines, “The president says he wants to make America great again. F–k that s–t, we going to make America Crip again… don’t you look strange having all that power but you won’t make change.”

“M.A.C.A.” was released seven months after Snoop parodied Trump in the video for “Lavender (Nightfall Remix),” which featured a clown version of the former reality star named Ronald Klump. The satire of current events had Clown-in-Chief Klump holding a press conference to announce the deportation of all dogs. In a Billboard interview at the time, Snoop ticked off a long list of problems he had with the real estate mogul who is currently making a third bid for the presidency. “The [Muslim] ban that this motherf–er tried to put up; him winning the presidency; police being able to kill motherf–kers… and get away with it (and) people being in jail for weed for 20, 30 years,” Snoop said at the time of Trump’s divisive actions and statements.

Trump, as is his wont, responded to the diss days later with an insult on his socials, referring to what he deemed the multi-platinum rapper’s “failing career.”

But in a weekend interview with the U.K.’s The Sunday Times (paywalled) it appears that one of Trump’s final acts in office before losing to President Joe Biden in the Nov. 2020 election left a lasting impact on Snoop. “Donald Trump? He ain’t done nothing wrong to me,” Snoop reportedly told the paper. “He has done only great things for me. He pardoned Michael Harris.”

Back in Jan. 2021 — just weeks after a mob of Trump loyalists attacked the U.S. Capitol building in an attempt to stop the certification of Biden’s victory — Snoop thanked Trump for his last-minute grant of clemency to Death Row Records co-founder Michael “Harry-O” Harris amid a flurry of 140 commutations and pardons doled out on one of his last days in office.

“I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump,” Snoop told the Times about his apparent change of heart about the former president who was ordered last week to pay advice columnist E. Jean Carrol $83.3 million in a defamation trial that is one of a handful of cases Trump is facing in New York, Florida, Georgia and Washington that have led to four indictments and 91 felony charges.

Snoop was signed to Death Row at the beginning of his career in 1993 and the rapper acquired the label’s catalog in 2022. Harris served 30 years of a 25-to-life sentence for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder before his sentence was commuted.

After telling Big Boy’s Neighborhood in June 2020 that he planned to vote for the first time because he could not stomach “one more year” of Trump’s chaotic rule, the rapper was more circumspect about where his ballot might go in what is expected to be another showdown between Trump and Biden. “I may have to,” Snoop said about whether he feels pressure to declare for a presidential candidate. “Because there are mixed views on that, so I want to see what the people say.”

Zerb & Sofiya Nzau Star in Dazzling ‘Mwaki’ Video Shot in Kenya’s Hells Gate National Park: Watch

“Mwaki,” the urgent progressive house track from Brazilian producer Zerb and Kenyan singer Sofiya Nzau, has been a dance world sensation since its release last November. The track hit No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart, with more than 100,000 videos created by fans on social media, and is currently at No. 3 on the global Shazam chart.

The track — sung in the tribal Kenyan language of Kikuyu — also gained momentum with recent remixes by Major Lazer and Tiësto, with edits from Franky Wah, Major League DJz, Tyler ICU, and Chris Avantgarde forthcoming. The song’s title translates to “fire.”

“I knew ‘Mwaki’ was special, but I didn’t expect the success and love that the song has had,” Zerb said in a statement. “I’m very happy not only with the result, but also with the opportunity to spread my music to the world.”

Now “Mwaki” is coming to life even more vividly via it’s just-out video, starring Zerb, Nzau and a fleet of Kenyan dancers. Directed by by Mikhail Mehra — who helmed the classic video for Major Lazer’s “Lean On” — the video was made in Kenya’s stunning Hells Gate National Park, where the crew traversed the park’s gorges by rope (and avoided the local hippopotamuses) while filming in the canyons and fields.

“Everybody on the team just making miracles happen,” Mehra said in a statement. “Hopefully, we make Kenya proud, because it was a tremendous experience.”

The clip comes with the announcement that the São Paulo-born producer, who has performed at Lollapalooza and Rock In Rio, has signed with UTA for live representation in all territories excluding Brazil.

The track is out on the indie label TH3RD BRAIN, whose global campaign behind the track successfully broken the song in myriad countries.

“Music doesn’t have borders today. It’s inspiring that an artist in Kenya can upload her vocals to the internet, be found by a Brazilian DJ, and turned into one of the biggest dance records of the year,” TH3RD Brain’s Alec Udell tells Billboard. “As an independent label, our partner network is set up to tell stories like this across the globe. Zerb and his manager Gabriel have been at this game for over ten years so what’s next for them is what’s really exciting to us.”
