Billboard Explains: NewJeans’ Fast Rise on the Charts

With honorees from the across the globe, the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards are a true international affair. Repping Seoul, South Korea, is NewJeans, a chart-topping K-pop girl group comprised of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein.

Earning this year’s Group of the Year award, NewJeans spent 2023 lighting up the Billboard charts and proving that they were the correct choice for the honor. The quintet debuted back in 2022, and their Jersey club-inflected sound has helped them become one of the hottest new acts across radio and streaming around the world.

In 2023, the group scored five entries on the Billboard Hot 100, led by “Super Shy” at No. 48. Their other entries include “OMG” (No. 74), “ETA” (No. 81), “Ditto” (No. 82) and “Cool With You” (No. 93). Over on the Billboard Global 200, “Super Shy” (No. 2), “Ditto” (No. 8) and “OMG” (No. 10) all reached the top 10. “Super Shy,” one of the group’s biggest singles, also made appearances on Pop Airplay (No. 37), Streaming Songs (No. 32) and Digital Song Sales (No. 45). On World Digital Song Sales, NewJeans boasts six consecutive top five hits.

NewJeans’ success is not limited to the singles chart. In 2023, Get Up — the group’s sophomore EP — debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (chart dated Aug. 5, 2023), edging out the star-studded Barbie soundtrack by just 500 units. Get Up also hit No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Tastemaker Albums and World Albums (10 weeks).

Proving their dominance across both albums and singles, NewJeans’ fast rise up the Billboard charts made them a clear choice for the Group of the Year honor at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

Mr. ChimeTime Says Eminem’s ‘Mom’s Spaghetti’ Is “The Worst”

It’s been years since Eminem got into the restaurant game with his Detroit eatery, Mom’s Spaghetti (lifted from a famous line off his smash hit “Lose Yourself”). If you’re wondering why it never branched out of the 313, well, it’s probably cause it’ll make you spit up a little something, allegedly.

At least that’s been the word on the street as popular online foodie and food vlogger Mr. ChimeTime, born Rashad Mooreman, has just put Em’s restaurant on blast for serving him what he called “the worst” spaghetti he’s ever had in his life. Taking to his channel to review Mom’s Spaghetti posted Saturday (Feb. 17), ChimeTime gave Eminem his flowers for being “iconic” and “one of the best rappers that ever lived” before chowing down on his order of two different types of spaghetti and a spaghetti sandwich.

The results were not glowing in the slightest as Chime went to town on his criticism of the food. “This is by far the worst spaghetti that I have ever had in my entire life of eating spaghetti,” Chime said. Continuing to reign fire and brimstone on the quality of food, Chime went on to say, “When I tasted this, it kinda reminds me of middle school cafeteria meat. But I’ma keep it 100 with you, middle school cafeteria meat is better than this bullsh*t, bruh.”

Aside from the actual taste of the meal, Chime took issue with the manner in which the food was served saying that the container was open and spaghetti spilled out of the box. It definitely didn’t help that the food was “cold as f*ck” and that the sauce itself was “by far the blandest upper-mid sauce that I’ve ever had in any spaghetti.”

Marshall Mathers out here really adding credence to the whole notion that white folk don’t know sh*t about flavor or spices. Just sayin’. Em might have to fire some people or at least just buy cans of Chef Boyardee by the truckload and pass it off as his own or something.

What action this prompts Eminem to take to improve the menu items of his restaurant is anyone’s guess, but one thing is for certain, we have no interest whatsoever in trying any items from Em’s Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant.

That being said, when the hell is Bun B going to open up a Trill Burgers in New York City, b?! We waiting on that, homie!

Tyla’s ‘Water’ Springs to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart

A month after Tyla’s “Water” ran its course at No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, the hit reaches the top of the Adult R&B Airplay list dated Feb. 24. The track, released on FAX Records/Epic Records, jumps 4-1 following a 25% surge in plays that made it the most played song on U.S. monitored adult R&B radio stations in the tracking week of Feb. 9-15, according to Luminate. Thanks to the rapid rise, “Water” also takes the Greatest Gainer award, given weekly to the song with the largest increase in plays.

“Water” gives 22-year-old Tyla her first Adult R&B Airplay No. 1 with her first appearance. The breakthrough single is a crossover smash, having reigned on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for eight non-consecutive weeks beginning in December, and for one week on Rhythmic Airplay the same month. Radio coronations continue a winning stretch for the South African singer, who took home the first-ever Grammy Award for best African music performance – for “Water” – earlier this month.

Trending on Billboard

Elsewhere, “Water” takes its sixth, non-consecutive week at No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks songs by combined audience totals from adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations. The single remains essentially even in audience, compared with last week, but has been blocked from the top slot by a historic title: SZA’s “Snooze” adds an unprecedented 31st week at No. 1 to its dominating run, the longest command song in the chart’s 31-year history.

Cementing that crossover appeal, “Water” heads the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart for a third week and improves 8% in plays in the latest tracking week. It also holds at its No. 8 peak on Pop Airplay for a third consecutive frame, adding 3% more plays in the same period.

With “Water” opening the floodgates, Tyla’s second single has landed on radio rankings. “Truth or Dare” starts at No. 40 on Rhythmic Airplay (up 207% in plays) and at No. 44 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (173,000 in audience, a 185% gain). Both “Water” and “Truth or Dare” will appear on the singer’s self-titled debut album, which arrives March 22.

Normani Announces Debut Album ‘Dopamine’

The wait is (almost) over: Normani announced she’ll be releasing her debut album, Dopamine, this year.

She posted the album artwork on Instagram Wednesday (Feb. 21), which features the black-leather bikini-clad singer riding on top of a black rocket. “cryingg typing this rn. DOPAMINE THE ALBUM,” she captioned the post. The announcement of her long-awaited first full-length project arrives after fans noticed the ex-Fifth Harmony member had cleared her Instagram.

She also reposted a June 30, 2018-dated message from X, in which she wrote, “I have my album title y’all,” and shared the album’s pre-save link wheresthedamnalbum.com.

Normani has yet to reveal Dopamine‘s release date, but according to the rapidly changing date counter on the aforementioned website, it will be released in 2024.

Trending on Billboard

Since embarking on her solo career in 2018, Normani has released only seven singles as a lead artist, with 2019’s “Motivation” and 2022’s “Fair” being the only songs she’s released without another artist on it. She’s had two Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits with the Sam Smith-assisted “Dancing With a Stranger” (No. 7) and the Khalid-assisted “Love Lies” (No. 9). “Motivation” and “Wild Side,” featuring Cardi B, have also charted on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 33 and No. 14, respectively.

Her Dopamine album announcement also arrives six months after signed a new management deal with Brandon Creed and Lydia Asrat through Creed’s Good World Management and Asrat’s Q10. Normani and her former management company, Brandon Silverstein‘s S10 Entertainment, parted ways last May.

Laroi — born Charlton Howard — opens up with an intimate documentary titled Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About A Kid Named Laroi, which will be available on Prime Video on Feb. 29. The “Stay” artist released the first trailer on Wednesday (Feb. 21), giving fans a taste of what’s to come.

Directed by Michael Ratner, the documentary takes viewers on an emotional journey of The Kid Laroi’s dealings with fame amid the massive commercial success of “Stay” leading into his The First Time debut album, which arrived in November.

Trending on Billboard

The two-minute trailer includes a preview of an unreleased song and features contributions from his “Stay” collaborator Justin Bieber.

“The first time I ever actually called him, he was in the shower, and I was like, ‘What’s up, dog? You can call me when you’re done showering!’” the Canadian pop star recalls.

“STAY” spent seven non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, and the diamond-certified anthem won Top Hot 100 Song as well as Top Collaboration honors at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.

Post Malone also sings Laroi’s praises in the clip: “Laroi, he’s so ambitious. I could tell he was gonna be huge.”

In a more serious turn, The Kid Laroi also gets candid about the lessons he learned from his late mentor, Juice WRLD, who passed away from an accidental drug overdose in December 2019.

“[Juice WRLD] taught me a lot about life,” he says. “He had so much life left to live. That just should not be placed on anybody.”

Prime Video is celebrating the doc’s arrival by hosting an interactive screening watch party and live Q&A between fans and The Kid Laroi from his home in Los Angeles on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. PT.

Leo Ieiri & Miliyah Kato Perform Orchestral Renditions of Iconic Hits at Billboard Japan Women in Music Vol. 2 Concert

Singer-songwriters Leo Ieiri and Miliyah Kato graced the stage for a double-headlining show at Tokyo City Hall for Billboard Japan’s Women In Music Vol. 2 concert on Feb. 8. The two J-pop stars collaborated with the Tokyo Philharmonic Billboard Classics Orchestra, led by conductor Yukari Saito, for a one-night-only performance featuring special renditions of familiar hits and uplifting messages with an underlying theme of inspiring and empowering women.

First up was Ieiri, who appeared onstage dressed in an elegant beige top with puffy translucent sleeves and matching pants, following the members of the orchestra at the start of the show. As the 29-year-old singer bowed deeply and greeted the audience, the piano sounded and the concert kicked off with “Zutto, Futari De” (Always, Together). The combination of Ieiri’s clear vocals and the orchestra’s solid performance instantly filled all corners of the venue with a luscious soundscape. The next song, “Kimi Ga Kureta Natsu” (The Summer You Gave Me), also sounded more dramatic than usual thanks to the orchestral arrangement. It was clear from the beginning of the show that everyone in attendance was in for a special evening that they couldn’t miss for a moment.

The singer addressed the crowd in the middle of her set and shared some thoughts on gender, inclusivity, and diversity, noting, “These past few years, I’ve been writing and singing songs while being mindful about how to carve out a path as a woman.” She also mused, “Since we live in times of diversity, I think we should expand our sexuality more.” Also, her remark about how “female empowerment can’t be achieved without cooperation from men, so I think it’s actually a theme for all human beings” left an impression, reminding that while the recent move towards gender equality encourages men and women to live under the same conditions, the important thing to remember is to respect each other’s differences and to help each other.

Trending on Billboard

Ieiri also performed “to U” by Bank Band with Salyu in the second half of the set, launching into the song a cappella and gradually adding minimal sounds of piano and harp in the first half, then building up the second half with a grand string arrangement. Ieiri’s voice and the orchestra’s performance showered the venue with a lush sound, creating an immersive environment that drew the crowd into the world of the song. During “Taiyo No Megami” (Goddess of The Sun), she turned her body left and right as she sang, visually accentuating the fact that she was singing for each and every person in the audience. Ieiri closed her set with the uplifting “Sora To Ao” (Sky And Blue), spinning around during the interlude while the crowd clapped along to the beat, leaving fans feeling euphoric by the end of her hit-filled stage.

After a short break, Miliyah Kato appeared on stage decked in a flowing black tiered tulle dress for the second half of the concert. After opening her set with “Respect Me,” the 35-year-old songstress addressed the crowd, saying, “I’m sure there will be many moments when (the music) will pass through your skin and cells and make your heart tremble. It’ll be an evening where something will reach you through this air. Please enjoy it to the end,” then went on to perform “Goodbye Darling,” “With U,” and other familiar hits in succession. Kato’s sultry vocals and the orchestral performance combined resulted in a more dynamic sound than the original versions of her recordings. Like the singer said, it felt like we were taking in the gorgeous sound through our skin and it was settling deep into the cells of our bodies.

Midway into her set, she opened up about her stance as a woman in the music industry. “I’ve always been very aware that I’ve lived my life as a woman. I love it, I enjoy it, and sometimes I’m sad about it,” she said. “I struggle with it every day, but music is what helps me during those times. Female artists were the reason I started music in the first place.” She then covered Hikaru Utada’s “First Love” as a tribute to one of the female artists who inspired her. She drew in the audience with her majestic performance, singing the longing ballad beautifully with both hands clutching the microphone against the backdrop of an orchestra. Each lyric seemed to linger in the air, showering over the audience in a luxurious blend of voice and sound.

Kato then launched into her iconic hit from 2009, “Aitai” (I Miss You). The evergreen, poignant love song is definitely heartbreaking yet sonically comforting, making you wish it never ends. Kato closed the evening with “JOYRIDE,” a song half in English and half in Japanese that she wrote with her hometown in mind. Kato’s vocals, the orchestra’s performance and the audience clapping along to the elevating single ended the show on a joyous note.

The aim of Billboard Japan’s Women In Music concerts is to play a part in encouraging women’s empowerment, and the Vol. 2 show delivered energy in various forms including the mesmerizing vocals by the two songstresses, the performances by the orchestra, the words spoken by the artists, and the sense of unity in the venue. People in the audience enjoyed the concert in different ways, with some rocking back and forth to the music while others listening intently, and many probably were inspired by what the artists had to say.

The synergetic effect of J-pop and orchestral music was more than expected, and was a good reminder that there are no barriers between musical genres. The people who gathered at the venue that day were probably diverse in terms of gender, age, and the music they like. But the fact that they were united by listening to the same music at the same place on this day will surely be an unforgettable memory for all.

‘Like Billie Eilish in 2019’: How Noah Kahan’s Alt-Folk Success Is Changing 2024 Pop

It’s another good week to be Noah Kahan: on this week’s Hot 100, the alt-folk singer-songwriter’s long-rising breakthrough “Stick Season” becomes his first career top 10 hit, rising to No. 10 in its 20th week on the chart. Kahan’s now-signature hit is the title track of his third studio album, Stick Season — which rebounds to its previous peak of No. 3 on the Billboard 200 this week thanks to a new deluxe edition dubbed Stick Season (Forever), 16 months after the album’s October 2022 release. Meanwhile, Kahan launches two new songs from the deluxe edition, “Forever” and “You’re Gonna Go Far,” onto the Hot 100 at Nos. 28 and 86, respectively.

Kahan’s dual chart triumph is a story of singular success: after grinding out multiple albums and hundreds of tour dates, the Strafford, Vt. native began an ascent towards crossover stardom in earnest last year as Stick Season’s listenership continued to swell. He is now, without a doubt, an A-list artist in popular music – yet the first few weeks of the new year have also suggested that, if 2023 was Kahan’s breakout year, 2024 may be the moment the greater sound of modern pop bends around him.

Trending on Billboard

As “Stick Season” hits the top 10, a slew of folk-adjacent, guitar-led, vaguely rustic sing-alongs have concurrently infiltrated the Hot 100 — from Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” to Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” to Michael Marcagi’s “Scared to Start” to Good Neighbours’ “Home” — making clear that Kahan’s influence is extending beyond his own wins. “This lane is now open,” Kwame Dankwa, program director of WXXX (95.5 FM) in South Burlington, Vt., tells Billboard of the burgeoning folk-pop boom.

A little over a decade ago, folk music experienced a pop revival thanks to what has been summarized as the “stomp clap hey” movement, with bands like Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers and Of Monsters & Men scoring banjo-heavy crossover hits and playing to sprawling festival crowds. While some of Kahan’s tunes modernize the stomp-clap sound, the core tenets of his heart-on-sleeve aesthetic — detailed storytelling, vulnerable vocals, scruffy guitar strums that could lead a song anywhere from folk to rock to country to pop — are being refracted through a variety of different styles and voices.

“There’s a confluence of influences — not just in the folk and singer-songwriter space, but also in indie, alt-country, soul,” says Cecilia Winter, Spotify’s Global Hits editorial lead. That’s why, even though a song like Teddy Swims’ soul-pop waltz “Lose Control” doesn’t resemble Kahan’s sound, the emotional songwriting and unfussy vocal take can be grouped together with “Stick Season” in a playlist or radio block. “We’re definitely seeing a heightened demand for these more raw, less-polished songs,” Winter adds.

Part of the explanation for this shift can be chalked up to timing: the advent of TikTok at the beginning of the decade, along with the global pandemic, produced a new wave of young artists stuck at home and sharing clips of themselves performing stripped-down songs from their bedrooms. Kahan experienced that circumstantial effect on his music firsthand: after his 2019 debut Busyhead failed to earn a sizable audience, the singer-songwriter kept writing throughout the pandemic (and about it, too — see the COVID name-check in the “Stick Season” lyrics) and posting song clips on TikTok. Weeks of teasers for “Dial Drunk” last year, for instance, stoked enough excitement that the song earned Kahan his first Hot 100 debut, and kicked off his crossover bid in earnest.

Also a key factor in the return of folk-pop: a superstar releasing back-to-back projects in that mode. Taylor Swift’s pair of 2020 albums, Folklore and Evermore, not only produced more eye-popping commercial returns and critical acclaim, but undoubtedly influenced a new generation of listeners a decade after folk’s last pop crossover.

“The biggest artist in the world [was] writing very grounded folk music that tells stories,” Kahan told Billboard last month, in reference to Swift’s sonic pivot. “And it allowed a huge new audience to find interest in that and to tap into that world.” The rise of alt-country troubadour Zach Bryan over the past two years was another major precedent for Kahan’s success; another rootsier storyteller whose songs were scooped up by the TikTok set, Bryan has become a stadium headliner, while also championing and collaborating with Kahan.

Perhaps the biggest recent change to this movement is happening at pop radio: while Swift’s Folklore/Evermore offerings and Bryan’s early hits never translated from streaming platforms to the top 40 airwaves, songs like “Stick Season,” “Lose Control” and “Beautiful Things” all reside in the top 25 of the current Pop Airplay chart. Dankwa says that, while WXXX has been keeping “Stick Season” and “Dial Drunk” from Vermont’s hometown hero in heavy rotation, he’s noticed that demand of similar-sounding artists on pop airplay is rising.

“With Noah Kahan’s success, so many [listeners] got their tastebuds wet, and they got hooked,” he notes. “They are saying, ‘We want more of this.’”

Along with factors like TikTok, the pandemic lockdowns and radio adoption, Winter suspects that the success of an artist like Kahan also speaks to a greater cultural push against technological superficiality. That includes combating the use of AI in music, of course, but also practices like image-smoothing via Photoshop and carefully curated social media feeds, in order to be more direct and genuine.

“There’s something distinctly human about folk,” says Winter. “With an ongoing shift towards greater authenticity, I think that shift bleeds into pop music, which is really a sponge for whatever is happening in culture.”

And Kahan — a gifted songwriter whose introspective folk songs contain a pop sensibility, so that his top 40-ready anthems still contain a sense of time and place — has served as the perfect emblem of that place. When Stick Season started taking off in 2023, Kahan had already been playing small and midsize venues around the U.S. for over a half-decade, developing a grassroots following that supported his small-town sing-alongs as pop fans began to take notice of his singles.

“Once an artist gets to a third album, sometimes they start to drift away from where normal people are, but I don’t see that happening with Noah,” says Dankwa. Kahan has naturally been heralded by Vermont and the greater New England area as he plotted arena headlining dates and earned a best new artist Grammy nod, but Dankwa believes Kahan is still “willing to tell everybody’s story. … People in Vermont know and understand him, but you could apply his songs to rural life anywhere in America.”

As a result, new hits that range from Boone’s full-throated folk-rocker “Beautiful People” (which spends a second week in the top 5 of the Hot 100) to Marcagi’s wistful strum-along “Scared to Start” (which debuted at No. 98 on last week’s chart) are further placing Kahan’s fingerprints across the pop charts as Kahan himself collects more hits. Juniper, Spotify’s new flagship folk playlist, has collected over 93,000 likes since launching last October — and Winter hopes that, as the sound’s place in pop music snowballs in 2024, more women and artists of color can gain traction in a space that’s been thus far dominated by white men, citing artists like Kara Jackson and Tiny Habits as just as worthy of mainstream moments.

Regardless of where this new boom leads, however, Winter views Kahan as the de facto leader of this movement, and predicts his influence to continue growing. “Noah reminds me of where Billie Eilish was in 2019,” she notes. “She’d been putting out music for a long time and building this core fan base, and then crossed over into the hit space in such a major way that all of a sudden there were a hundred mini-Billie Eilishes. That’s kind of what is happening with Noah Kahan.”
