K-Pop, SEVENTEEN Dominate IFPI Global Album Award 2023

K-pop reigns over the IFPI’s year-end albums chart, as the genre scoops five of the top 10 spots, led by SEVENTEEN with FML.

Announced today (Feb. 27), FML is the boy band’s first IFPI Global Album Award, tallied by the trade association using worldwide sales across streaming, download and physical music formats during the calendar year 2023.

Released in April 2023, FML was the most pre-ordered LP in K-pop history, landing at No. 1 in South Korea and Japan, and debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Following its hot start in the U.S. (the album also led the World Albums list), SEVENTEEN reentered the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated May 13, 2023) at No. 1 – becoming the seventh K-pop group to rule the ranking.

SEVENTEEN’s followup, the October release SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, finishes at No. 8 on the IFPI Global Album Chart 2023.

Meanwhile, Stray Kids make it a K-pop one-two as 5-STAR appears at No. 2 on the IFPI list, and ROCKSTAR rocks in at No. 9. NCT DREAM land their first appearance in an IFPI Global Charts with ISTJ at No. 6, while, further down the chart, K-pop acts ZEROBASEONE (YOUTH IN THE SHADE at No. 18) and IVE (I’ve IVE at No. 20) make their presences felt.

Also, BTS star Jung Kook earns his first solo appearance on the IFPI Global Album Chart with GOLDEN, appearing at No. 14.

The global appeal of K-pop “continues to extend and S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Migyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon and Dino continue to push the boundaries with their concepts, performances and talent,” comments Lewis Morrison, director of global charts & certifications at IFPI. “FML and SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN were both huge hits across continents and our congratulations go to the group, their team and of course CARATs all over the world.”

The rankings provide an insight into the “dynamic nature” of recorded music today, Morrison continues, “with artists – and their record labels – finding success across genres and geographies, and by leveraging both streaming and physical formats to delight their fans.”

Taylor Swift was crowned last week as IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year, scooping the top honor for a record fourth time. Though she doesn’t own the global albums chart, the U.S. pop superstar does score two of the top 10 best-sellers, with Midnights (No. 4) logging a second consecutive year in the top five and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) appearing at No. 5 following its release in October 2023.

Earlier this week, IFPI separately named Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” as the biggest single of 2023.

The IFPI’s charts capture streaming, downloads and physical formats in every country directly from the participating record labels. That data is then converted using the association’s “unique” methodology to a single, global chart figure.

Tostao Wants to Take Afro Colombian ‘Ritmo Exótico’ Global

When ChocQuibTown –the seminal Colombian trio that fuses hip hop with Colombian rhythms and beats from the Pacific Coast — took a break late in 2022, co-founder Tostao decided to go back to his roots. Literally. The multi-time Latin Grammy winner (real name: Carlos Valencia) went back to his native Chocó, in Colombia’s Pacific Coast, and then to Medellín, where he and a group of producers, writers and artists began to create.

The resulting Exótico Pa’l Mundo (Exotic For the World), released late last year, is an album of “ritmo exótico,” a new genre little known outside Colombia that Tostao describes as “an urban fusion with elements of tropical Colombian music and folklore.”

You might think you’ve heard stuff like this before, but you haven’t. “Ritmo exótico” is vibrant and luscious and immediately danceable, mixing electronic loops with acoustic instruments and irresistible swagger and attitude. It’s underground but it could be mainstream (check out a taste here).

“It’s like you brought together standard Colombian reggaetón with a little bit of Joe Arroyo vibe and on top of that you put in a little bit of Petronio Alvarez, of that Blackness,” says Tostao, referring to the late Afrocolombian composer and singer, for whom Colombia’s biggest festival of Black Pacific music is named.

Like Alvarez, Tostao, who is also Black, has long been committed to celebrating his Afro Colombian culture, and with ChocQuibTown, he – along with ex wife Goyo and Slo — was able to create an international hip-hop sound that incorporated the most local subgenres of Colombia’s Pacific coast. Ritmo Exótico is also anchored in the music of Chocó and the Pacific, but it leans more folk and tropical.

“It’s like reggaetón with a taste of borojó,” laughs Tostao, alluding to a tropical fruit from Chocó.

To get his mix of sounds just right, Tostao moved from Miami to Medellín, which has world-class recording studios, but is also home to a big population of musicians from Chocó, all of them Black. Tostao joined them in a kind of collective that gave way to a first solo album that is anything but solitary.

Exótico Pa’l Mundo features up and coming ritmo exótico acts like Luis Eduardo Acústico, Robbie Vida (who Tostao describes as “the Kanye West of ritmo exótico”), Buay Press and Yilmar Dresan, as well as more established Afro Colombian acts like Mabiland and Los Dioses del Ritmo.

The project started as a songwriting camp with kids from the ritmo exótico movement. Young artists who’d gone viral on TikTok — like Los Dioses del Ritmo with their “Alo Michael (Rico Rico)” single. The idea, says Tostao, was to teach them how he worked in the industry.

“Turns out they were super-talented, super-hard working. So I spoke to my manager [Juan Diego Medina, who also manages Manuel Turizo and Nicky Jam] and I told him: ‘I know it’s not common to write and publish songs with kids no one knows yet. But I want to do this as my solo project.’”

Exótico Pa’l Mundo was released via Medina’s La Industria and distributed via Sony. And although Tostao sees it as a project born from love, he also wants it “to become commercially viable. It’s like we did with CocQuibTown, a black group playing in Bogotá who won a Grammy. If global platforms support a genre like ritmo exótico from Chocó, it has all the elements to go global. It’s not just about love. It’s about having been around the world and seeing the results.”

Tostao also knows this may be slow going — the artists of this scene are mostly unknown outside Colombia, after all — but he feels the change is there, right below the surface.

“This sound feels like a club sound. It feels big,” he says. “And it’s a movement, like a wave. When we had ChocQuibTown we were the only ones because the sound was so special. But when you’re part of a movement, the minute one stands out, others will follow.”

The best way for that to happen, Tostao admits, would be to have a big name like Farruko or Myke Towers jump and bandwagon. Meantime, he’s busy evangelizing for the music and the culture.

Late last year, he launched a projected titled Somos Grandes (We’re Big) together with the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, which connects Afro Latino elements across Latin American countries. One of the chapters is focused on ritmo exótico in Chocó, and will feature six weeks of workshops, panels and production that will wrap up March 21.

“I want to open a door to show people El Chocó,” says Tostao. “My editorial line is the promotion of Afro Colombian music. Wherever I play, I’d like people to say, ‘A guy from El Chocó was here and left us with that Afro Pacific flow.’ I feel many things are happening now with our Afro Colombian culture. There’s far more presence. But I feel the moment, the big moment, hasn’t come yet. We still don’t have our Afro Maluma. But it’s coming.”

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick Bust Out Barnyard Cover of Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’

Kevin Bacon and wife actress Kyra Sedgwick got their boots dirty this week for a barnyard cover of Beyoncé‘s smash country hit “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The couple took to the pen to mingle with their pigs and ponies for one of their beloved cover song videos, in which Bacon — rocking a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, jeans, boots and a red flannel shirt — quick strummed his mandolin as Sedgwick tossed in the occasional “whoo!” and “hey!”

“This ain’t Texas, ain’t no hold ’em/ So lay your cards down, down, down, down/ So park your Lexus and throw your keys up/ Stick around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round/ And I’ll be damned if I can’t slow dance with you,” Bacon sang as the livestock milled around at his feet. “Monday morning serenade,” the couple tagged the post.

Beyoncé made history when “Texas Hold ‘Em” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on Monday (Feb. 26), a week after the singer became the first Black woman, or female known to be biracial, in modern music history to hit the top of Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart, where it is still holding the pole position. The single earned Queen Bey her ninth leader on the Hot 100 and her first since 2022’s “Break My Soul.”

“Texas” and its fellow country-leaning single, “16 Carriages,” are the first taste of Bey’s upcoming eighth solo studio album, Act II, which she announced in a commercial during Super Bowl LVIII earlier this month; the album is the follow-up to Bey’s 2022 Renaissance LP.

Christian Nodal Sets ‘Pa’l Cora’ Tour Dates for Europe

Christian Nodal is taking his mariacheño to Europe.

The Mexican singer-songwriter is set to kick off a eight-date European stint, as part of his Pa’l Cora Tour, that will begin June 28 in Zurich and visit other major cities including London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona and Milan. Nodal’s trek in Europe is a significant moment for regional Mexican music in general, and a nod to the globalization of the genre.

“When we performed our first concert in Madrid last May, at the WiZink Center, more than a goal a European tour was a dream and you, my fans, with that SOLD OUT ended up making it come true,” the 25-year-old artist said in a statement. “Thank you for loving my music as much or more than I do … I love you guys so much, see you soon, I will be visiting you in your city so we can dance, fall in love and also have a shot of Don Julio tequila in the name of heartbreak.”

Nodal’s Pa’l Cora Tour in Europe — a mix of theater, arena and festival shows — will follow his Foraji2 Tour, which he wrapped in December 2023. The 31-date arena run in the United States followed his 22-date 2022 Forajido Tour, which grossed $14.5 million and sold 147,000 tickets across 22 shows, according to Billboard Boxscore. In 2023, he grossed $21.6 million and sold 259,000 tickets.

Most recently, Nodal won his sixth Latin Grammy taking home best ranchero/mariachi album for Forajido EP2. To date, Nodal is the soloist with the most No. 1 songs on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart, with 15 champs since the list launched in 1994.

The Pa’l Cora Tour in Europe is a JG Music production, Nodal’s father’s management, label and promotions company, in partnership with Spanish concert promoter Iglesias Entertainment. See the dates below for Nodal’s Pa’l Cora Tour dates in Europe:

The six-track EP was described in a press release as spanning a “diverse array of sounds and moods that showcase j-hope’s musical prowess and depth.” It also features a number of special guests, including band mate Jung Kook on “i wonder,” as well as Benny Blanco and Chic’s Nile Rodgers on “lock/ unlock,” a dance mix of “what if” with Jinbo the SuperFreak and “NEURON” featuring South Korean hip-hop vet Gaeko of Dynamic Duo and yoonmirae.

“NEURON” references the dance crew J-Hope was part of before his debut in BTS, as well as the word’s literal meaning: generating electricity and delivering information while stimulated. “[The song] is inspired by 2000s old-school hip hop, a genre that made a significant impact on j-hope as an artist… [and it] reflects the album’s theme of exploring j-hope’s artistic roots, ‘street dance,’ and delivers his motivation for life and a new start,” reads a statement about the project that features four new songs, as well as a solo version of “On the Street” (which first came out in 2023 featuring J. Cole) and a dance mix of Hope’s 2022 song “what if.”

The album will be accompanied by a deeper dive into J-Hope’s artistic roots and street dance background in an accompanying six-part docuseries, also named Hope on the Street, which will debut on March 27 at 11 a.m. ET on Prime Video.

The mini-album is the follow-up to Hope’s 2022 solo album, Jack in the Box, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. An expanded HOPE Edition of the album was released in August 2023, featuring the original album tracks, as well as three live recordings from the singer’s history-making performance at Lollapalooza in 2022 in Chicago and two instrumental tracks.

President Biden Tells Seth Meyers That Information on 2024 Taylor Swift Endorsement Is ‘Classified’

Pres. Joe Biden gets it. The commander-in-chief stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers on Monday night (Feb. 26) to help the show’s host celebrate his show’s 10th anniversary, and to keep stoking the fires of right-wingnut conspiracy theories about his alleged devious plot to secure the most important endorsement in this year’s presidential campaign.

“Can you confirm or deny that there is an active conspiracy between you and Miss Swift?,” Meyers asked Biden about the allegations from conservatives that the President is working behind the scenes with Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce to boost his campaign against expected challenger Donald Trump by locking in the power couple’s endorsement.

“Where are you getting this information? It’s classified. That’s classified information,” Biden said with a smile in a rare late night appearance. “But I will tell you, she did endorse me in 2020.”

Trending on Billboard

Meyers was as relentless as a White House pool reporter in his questioning, wondering if the Swift thumbs up might “come around again.” Biden still wouldn’t bite, joking, “I told you it’s classified.”

Before this month’s Super Bowl, conservatives got spun up about a made-up theory that Swift and Kelce had cooked up a plot with the White House to have the pair officially endorse Biden after Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII. The visit by Biden — his first as a sitting president — marked the 10th anniversary of the launch of Late Night. Biden, then Vice President, and the night’s other guest, Amy Poehler, were the inaugural guests on Meyers’ first broadcast on Feb. 24, 2014.

Biden, 81, also had jokes, noting that Trump, 77, is “about as old as I am but he can’t even remember his wife’s name,” in response to a question about concerns related to his age; Biden is the oldest sitting president and would be the oldest president to ever serve if he wins a second term. “It’s about how old your ideas are,” he added about Trump, the twice-indicted, one-term president who is facing 91 felony counts in four different cases as he mounts his third run for the White House. “This about a guy who wants to take us back, he wants to take us back on Roe V. Wade, he wants to take us back on a whole range of issues that for 50-60 years they have been solid American positions.”

The president — who was sporting a flag pin on his lapel featuring the American and Ukrainian flags in the midst of a fight in Congress over further funding for the war in Ukraine — also sat on the couch with Poehler to reminisce about his guest spot on Parks and Recreation. Meyers asked Biden about his seemingly playful adoption of the “Dark Brandon” right-wing meme, to which Biden responded, “no, I resent the hell out of it,” as he slipped on DB’s signature dark aviator shades to wild applause from the studio audience.

Spotify Paid Out a Record $4.5B to Independent Labels & Publishers in 2023

Spotify paid out nearly $4.5 billion to independent rights holders in 2023, or roughly half of the more than $9 billion the streaming service paid to all labels and publishers last year, the company announced Tuesday (Feb. 27).

The $4.5 billion total marks a new record for the indie sector (which includes DIY artists) and a four-times increase in the amount that independents generated on Spotify in 2017, according to the company. Spotify notes that $4.5 billion is bigger than the entire recorded music industry in every country in the world aside from the United States, citing IFPI’s 2023 global music report (based on 2022 figures).

“In 2023, independent music‘s historic achievement, generating nearly $4.5 billion on Spotify, underscores the transformative and democratizing impact of streaming, marking a milestone in the global accessibility and success of independent artists,” said Dr. Richard James Burgess, CEO of A2IM, in a statement.

Trending on Billboard

As Billboard previously estimated, Spotify is likely the biggest source of music revenue globally, accounting for around 20% of label and publishing income worldwide based on a global value of music copyright estimated at more than $45 billion in 2023 (extrapolated from the $41.5 billion total estimated by music economist Will Page for 2022). That would mean Spotify’s payouts to indies alone comprised around 10% of the total value of music copyright worldwide last year.

The figures released by Spotify aren’t surprising when considering that independents’ share of the market has been growing each year. By label ownership, the indie sector made up more than one-third of the overall music business in 2023, according to figures released by Luminate, with a 35.74% share of the market, easily besting Universal Music Group’s 29.35%.

Despite competition from deep-pocketed rivals like Apple Music and Amazon Music, Spotify remains the largest music subscription platform worldwide. MIDiA Research’s Q3 2023 Global Music Subscription Market report released earlier this month put Spotify at a 31.7% share of the total global streaming market with 226 million subscribers worldwide. That puts it far ahead of rivals including Tencent Music Entertainment (102.7 million), Apple Music (89.8 million), Amazon Music (78.9 million) and YouTube Music (69.1 million). For its part, Spotify reported 236 million subscribers in its fourth quarter earnings report on Feb. 6.

Fred Again Creates Ticket Frenzy With Surprise Show at Sydney Opera House

Fred Again has done it again, dropping a surprise performance on Australians and selling it out in next-to-no-time.

The British producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist used the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a prop for a social post Tuesday morning (Feb. 27), which doubled as the big reveal for his pop-up show later that evening at the Sydney Opera House.

The performance at the 2,679-capacity Concert Hall “immediately sold out,” according to Warner Music. Due to “expected high demand,” ticket hunters were placed into a queue to purchase tickets, according to reps from the iconic venue, with over 125,000 people waiting in line following the announcement.

The intimate show is said to be a special, one-off stripped version of his live show, with Fred teasing “no lights, one small screen, me, tony, and maybe the most beautiful venue in the world”.

It’s peak summer in these parts and live music fans are enjoying an embarrassment of riches, with Taylor Swift, Pink, Chemical Brothers, Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls and now Fred Again among the big-ticket international acts currently filling arenas and stadiums across the country.

Fred Again (real name: Fred Gibson) has a special connection with Australian audiences. He made his live debut here in January 2023, performing sets at Laneway Festival, selling-out headline shows, and unleashing surprise DJ pop-ups that reportedly sold-out in under 5 seconds, including a set at Sydney’s 5,500-capacity Hordern Pavilion.

The Brit’s career has taken off like a rocket. Along the ride, Fred became the Brit Awards’ youngest ever producer of the year champ, and scooped two Grammy Awards earlier this month for best dance/electronic album (for Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 23, 2022)) and best dance/electronic recording for his work on “Rumble” with Skrillex and Flowdan.

Starting out as a producer, Fred collaborated with Ed Sheeran and Stormzy, working his magic on U.K. No. 1 single “Take Me Back To London,” and cutting tracks with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Headie One. His talent was rewarded last year when he signed an exclusive, worldwide publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group.

U.S. audiences will get a piece of the action when Fred Again headlines Bonnaroo 2024 this June.

One Direction is gone, split up into five healthy parts. But certainly not forgotten.

The Garcia twins played their part in keeping the flame burning for 1D with a performance Monday night (Feb. 26) as The Voice returned to our screens.

For their blind audition, the teenage lads performed “Story of My Life,” lifted from 1D’s 2013 album Midnight Memories, one of their four No. 1s on the Billboard 200 chart.

There were wet eyes in the room as the 17-year-old brothers sprung the nostalgic number, on pitch, and with a solid hug at the end.

Hailing from Millbrae, CA, the bros, Justin and Jeremy, managed a three-chair turn. Only John Legend kept his back to the boys.

“You’ve got the duo thing down,” remarked coach Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay, stating the obvious. “Man, that was a fantastic performance. From the first time I heard you harmonizing and I found out it was two people, I was like, we’ve got to turn around. That sounds amazing.”

That was the cue for a sales pitch. Brothers, come team up with the “brothers”.

There’s still room for improvement. “When you guys first started, it was super, super tight,” Chance the Rapper noted. “There were some parts where one of you guys got pitchy. And you guys gained control by the end.” He added, “as long as you guys are focused on how you interact with each other, you guys will have great performances and keep having success like this.”

The harmonies “could have been a little tighter,” remarked Legend, explaining his reasons for not turning. But hey, what an experience.

Reba McEntire felt a connection. The country star recounted her youth growing up in a “singing family.” Hearing the twins belt it out, “it takes me back to my childhood. I absolutely love your enthusiasm.” And, as she started her own sales pitch, confessed she was “really moved by it.”

In the end, it boiled down to a decision. The Garcias chose coaches Dan + Shay, who served as mentors in season 20 and made their coaching debut tonight, becoming the first artists to join the country duo’s team.

For the record, 1D was created through the vehicle of another reality TV format, the 2010 season of The X Factor, setting charts and hearts ablaze until 2016, when the group went on indefinite hiatus.

NBC’s The Voice is now in its 25th season.
