I love you too. Oh my goodness. First of all, my heart hasn’t stopped beating for the past 30 minutes and my earring dropped. And I know, we’re all supposed to give speeches, I actually wrote one but forgot it everything completely.

One thing that is uniquely special to me is that I’m in a room full of amazing women, and I’m standing with a with a continent behind me, I’m standing with the people behind me. And it makes me feel like I’m part of something just being in this room. I want to dedicate this award to my mom, who is the first woman I ever met. And she really inspired me that no matter what you’re going through, that shouldn’t give you a reason not to champion everybody around you and I really want to use this opportunity to say that like to all the women in the room, in the world, that no matter what you’re going through, you should know you’re not alone. So even when you’re sad, even when you’re angry, there’s someone that is angry too. So uplift everybody around you because they need that like you and somebody is there for you. And I think it’s really important that we have each other. I know it’s corny to say, you know, support each other but it’s true. We we don’t have anybody else but ourselves. I mean, it’s the women thats got the women, trust me so thank you so much to my team. Thank you, God. Thank you to my family, my fans. Thank you, to my supporters. Thank you to everybody in this room for just being amazing and all the women that are here and being strong and God bless you all.

Tems Delivers Angelic Performance of ‘Not an Angel’ at Billboard Women in Music 2024

Tems might claim she’s “Not an Angel” in her latest single, but she sure looked like one Wednesday night (March 6) when she performed it at Billboard Women in Music.

The Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer took the stage at YouTube Theater in Inglewood, Calif., cloaked in a white bedazzled hooded dress, the smoke billowing from underneath her acting as a long, flowing train. “Not an Angel” is one of two singles Tems released last year, arriving two months after “Me & U.” In her Women in Music profile, she assured her highly anticipated debut album “is 1,000% coming out this year.”

Following her peformance, Tems accepted the Breakthrough Award from Savannah James, who said that Future‘s Grammy-winning Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems, is her “personal favorite.” Tems said she had prepared a speech for the evening, but “I have forgotten everything completely,” she admitted before one fan screeched, “You’re the best!” and more applause followed. “One thing that’s uniquely special to me is that I’m in a room full of amazing women and I’m standing with a continent behind me, I’m standing with the people behind me, and it makes me feel like I’m part of something just being in this room.”

Tems dedicated her award to “the first woman I ever met,” her mother, who broke with Yoruba tradition by choosing her daughter’s name Témìládè Openiyi — a role typically reserved for the father’s side of the family — because “God told me,” Tems’ mother explained on For Broken Ears’ “Témìládè Interlude.“

Growing up, “everybody just called me Temi. Nobody really called me by my full name. It wasn’t something that was on my mind,” Tems previously told Billboard. “It’s only now, as an adult, that I started realizing that it meant ‘the crown is mine.’ I think that’s really powerful. It feels manifested, based on how my life has gone.“

“I really want to use this opportunity to say to all the women in the room, in the world, that no matter what you’re going through, you should know you’re not alone. So even when you’re sad, even when you’re angry, there’s someone that’s angry, too. So uplift everybody around you because they need that like you and somebody’s there for you,” she concluded her speech. “It’s the women that got the women, trust me.”

This has just been getting up the stairs or for all of us getting through the rain today, that rain soaked entrance. Thanks so much. Oh, hi everyone. I love being in this room. And it’s ridiculous to say, but I have never been in a room like this a pure and vital celebration of women in music, and I’ve been one for 37 years. So, it is especially nice to be here and so wonderful to be in your company. Thank you, Billboard for this incredible honor and recognition.

On the one hand, be still my beating heart, on the one hand, it seems completely surreal. Like is this really happening? How did I get here? And then on the other hand simultaneously, I know the steps it took to get here physically and mentally navigating the highs, the lows, and trying to never lose sight of the in between the terra firma I also know there’s luck, fate, a calling and help. A lot of help from a lot of people over a very long time, in my case. So, thank you to anyone and everyone who has been there for me. My team, many of whom are here tonight. Predominantly women thank you so much. To my fans, wherever you may be, thank you I simply love you. You might go to this possible, I love your thank you.

Closer to home, thank you to my family, and especially my mom who is my icon and my best friend and trust me, you know this night is so inspiring. I will be calling her the second that gets my phone. I know tonight is all about celebrating but I thought on my way here I thought I’m gonna give a shout out to all the times. But we’re not peak moments. There were no fun. But those challenges the lows, the one with this stuff we’ve got to get through sometimes. I wanted to give a big shout out to all the terrible times. Thank you for teaching us that there are horrendous in the moment, but they happen and it’s how we navigate them and what we do with them. So I’m not looking forward to the next one, but it will come so thanks to all the moments that make up this free one. And finally, music I literally am I more and more and more in love with music all the time. So music I love you. And thank you so much. Have a great night everybody.

Hi everyone, how are you feeling? I mean, what a night. It just keeps getting better and better. And it’s gonna get even better because I get to give out an award to an icon.

I grew up listening to her and she’s just one of my I mean, my favorite dance musician. Her name is Kylie Minogue. This extraordinary singer-songwriter, actress, model has been making music for over three decades, okay. She’s had hits on multiple Billboard charts, starting with her very first Hot 100 Top 10 in 1988. Okay, “The Local Motion.” Over the years, she’s charted seven songs on the Hot 100 and 11 albums on the Billboard 200. And it’s no wonder why we can’t get her out of our heads, ladies and gentlemen.

She’s honestly been an extraordinary isn’t extraordinary or extraordinary. It’s extraordinary, right? Whatever. She has been an amazing model for so many of us and she’s encouraging us to do what we love and to keep following our hearts, and she continues to innovate and break boundaries. Most recently actually beating me in this category but first ever Grammy give it out for best dance pop recording for “Padam Padam” and she said that “Padam Padam” is the sound of a heartbeat. And I just want to say one thing okay. Um, being a woman in the music business looking up to her and being in this category right for pop dance. I always feel like in the music business we’re always being judged by numbers, right? Our age, especially, as females our weight, and she beat all of us in a category and she’s 55 and she looks fucking amazing, okay. So I’m telling you right now numbers ages anything it doesn’t define you because she’s fucking winning Grammys and fucking beating all of us out here in dance music, okay?

So it is an honor to present this year’s Billboard Woman in Music Icon to someone who has captured our hearts year after year with her style and spirit and, of course, her sensational sound.

I mean, come on — she is queen. Make some noise for Kylie Minogue.

You got this girl. You got it? I mean, come on. Like are you serious?

What the f–k is happening here, guys? Oh my God. Well, first of all, thank you so much, Demi Lovato, for being with me. I mostly sing in Portuguese, so this is so crazy and I’m, I’m so nervous right now.

OK, I have a thing right here I’m gonna try to read. “Hi guys. OK, this is crazy” — I wrote that. First of all, I want to say thank you to the women who inspired me in my life: my mom, I want to say thank you to my grandma, my manager Fátima and everyone on my team who makes being here possible. Luísa Sonza Performs Fiery Duet With Demi Lovato, Accepts Global Force Award at Billboard Women in Music 2024

On Wednesday night (March 6), Luísa Sonza captivated audiences with a sweet rendition of “Chico,” debuting its English version interlaced with some original Portuguese lyrics. This tender bossa nova was performed for the first time in English at the 2024 Billboard Women In Music Awards, held at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, Calif.

Clad in a chic black vest and matching low-rise slacks — her blond hair stylishly tied back into a ponytail and her lips painted a striking red — the Brazilian music sensation gracefully shifted from her mellifluous tune to a more vibrant performance. Backed by blazing images on screens, the energy in the room surged when Demi Lovato made a surprise appearance, joining Sonza onstage for their “Penhasco2” duet. This collaboration added an unforgettable flair to the evening, creating a mesmerizing moment with the night’s honored Global Force.

Sonza made history as the only Brazilian artist honored at the event.

“What the f— is happening here, guys? Oh my God!” Sonza said as she received her award. “First of all, thank you Demi Lovato for [joining] me. I’m a Brazilian singer, I mostly sing in Portuguese, so this is so crazy, and I’m so nervous right now.”

Then she continued to read her speech: “First of all, I wanna say thank you to the woman who inspired me in my life, my mom. I would have rethought my shoe choice had I known how tall Katy [Perry] was going to be tonight. Thank you, Katy. You exemplify what it means to be a strong woman in music, whether through your singular artistry or your business savvy — your positive influence resonates through so many facets of our business. It’s been such an absolute honor to work with you for more than a decade. I will always be there for you as you have always been there for me.

I’m sure there were more than a few internal discussions at Billboard in light of my recent career change, so I’m all the more appreciative of your courage and presenting me with this award. Thank you, Hannah and everyone at Billboard for this recognition. I’m thrilled to be sharing this night with so many fantastic women, and I want to give a special shout-out to Ice Spice and Young Miko, two artists I am proud to have signed and work closely with and whose futures are limitless. I also want to introduce you to someone very special — she took me to my first concerts, introduced me to the power of music. She taught me to believe in myself and never be intimidated by anyone. She worked seven days a week to raise me alone, to be the person standing before you tonight. She’s the most important woman in my life, my mom.

Every Friday, I go on a long hike with an artist, manager or colleague. Sometimes we discuss business, but most often we talk about life, one human being to another. We agree to be vulnerable. So tonight, I’m going to treat my few minutes up here as I would one of those hikes. No, I’m not going to take off my makeup and change into Hokas or make Katy take off her shoes. Although I’m sure she’d like to, but I’m going to get real.

Women, did these comments sound familiar? “You’re too emotional.” “You don’t have to be so direct when you talk.” We all know that’s code for “Stop a b—h.” “You should smile more.” That’s one of my personal favorites. We’ve all heard these glib phrases and countless others throughout our careers.
