Ariana Grande’s ‘Focus’ Music Video Surpasses 1 Billion Views on YouTube

Ariana Grande‘s “Focus” music video has now captured people’s undivided attention more than a billion times.

The 2015 visual has joined YouTube’s billion views club, as confirmed by the platform. It marks her eighth time reaching the milestone, following “Into You,” “No Tears Left to Cry,” “Break Free,” “Side to Side” with Nicki Minaj and more.

In the video, a platinum-haired Grande models several crop top/miniskirt combos, and nails high-energy choreography with a group of backup dancers, at one point pretending to play a silver trumpet. In some scenes, she appears alone in a spinning, circular tube, the lighting showing only the shape of her silhouette.

“Let’s find a light inside our universe now/ Where ain’t nobody keep on holding us down,” she sings on the track. “Just come and get it let them say what they say/ ‘Cause I’m about to put them all away.”

Released in 2015, “Focus” was originally believed to be the lead single off Grande’s third studio album Dangerous Woman, although Republic Records later confirmed it had been cut from the tracklist. It peaked at its debut spot of No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The news comes as Grande’s most recent music video, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” from her new album Eternal Sunshine, rules at the top of YouTube’s U.S. Trending Music Videos chart. The emotional video stars Evan Peters and finds the Grammy winner recreating the premise of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind — also a huge inspiration for the singer’s new LP — getting brain surgery to erase her every memory of a lost love.

NYPD Cops Tase Migrant While He Was Holding His Baby Son

The migrant crisis overtaking the streets of New York (thanks mostly to the Republican governors of Florida and Texas who are bussing their migrants to the Big Apple to make a political point) has a lot of New Yorkers on edge and things are continuing to get more hectic with each passing day.

Weeks after a gang of migrants jumped some police officers in Midtown Manhattan, a cop used a stun gun to subdue a migrant after being called to a migrant shelter in Queens, and the incident was captured on video. According to NYMag, Venezuelan migrant Yanny Cordero was tased and subdued by police this past Friday (March 7) after police were called to the scene in response to an altercation between Cordero and the staff at the migrant shelter.

After police confronted Cordero at the shelter, things escalated and one officer pulled out his stun gun and hit him while he was holding his 1-year-old son.

NYMag reports:

Additional officers intervene and pull him from the elevators, forcing him down on a nearby desk after removing Cordero’s 1-year-old son from his arms. His wife, Andrea Parra, can be heard screaming and attempts several times to put herself between her husband and the officers, only to be pulled away.

Andry Barreto, a Venezuelan migrant who recorded the video, can be heard yelling in Spanish, “This is abuse, brother!” and “Don’t hit him! Don’t hit him!” as officers hold Cordero down and strike him multiple times, after which he tumbles to the ground.

Cordero, who has been staying at the shelter since December, tells the Timesthat the incident began when he returned to the building Friday evening after buying food for his family. He claims employees at the shelter stopped him from taking food up to his room and that, as he struggled to use a translator on his phone, one of the employees suddenly hit him in the face. They later called the authorities.

Both Cordero and his wife were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Their 1-year-old son was taken in by the Administration for Children’s Services but returned to the couple when they were released the following Monday (March 11).

Naturally struggle Mayor Eric “Party Time” Adams defended the officer’s actions saying “This person was under the influence of alcohol, holding a child. Those officers had to get that child from him so that child was not going to be in danger.” Cordero for his part denies being drunk.

Don’t be surprised if more of these kinds of incidents continue to happen because after those migrants beat down those cops in Times Square a few weeks ago, y’all know the NYPD isn’t going to take anything lying down going forward.

“And to thank you for all that you’ve done for me and my family, I present to you, The Boy,” Bun said. “This is our newest resident, please make some noise for Drizzy Drake.”

Drake emerged from the SUV rocking a Bun B Trill album T-shirt and orange jacket to kick off his set, taking fans down memory lane with his So Far Gone “November 18th” throwback ode to Houston while paying homage to the late DJ Screw. “The first time I did this song in Houston, Texas [I] was at Warehouse Live,” Drake recalled.

Marvel Fires ‘X-Men ’97’ Creator Weeks Before The Show Premiere

Disney+’s highly anticipated animated series X-Men ’97 hasn’t even premiered on the streaming network yet, but already there’s been a major shakeup with its production team.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series creator, writer and producer, Beau DeMayo, was unexpectedly fired from the show just weeks before it was set to premiere on Disney+ and left everyone scratching their heads at the sudden move from Marvel. The decision comes just weeks after DeMayo had finished writing the second season of X-Men ’97 and was already pondering ideas for a third season with his writing team.

As of now, Marvel hasn’t given any reason for the sudden firing of DeMayo who’s also written for the live-action series Moon Knight and was also working on Blade, but best believe we’ll be all ears once they do because this really took the comic book world by surprise.

Per The Hollywood Reporter:

It was [sic] surprising turn of events on the eve of the show’s March 20 debut. Splitting with writers is a normal part of business for Marvel or any studio. However, it is unusual for a top creative on a Marvel project to miss a premiere or cancel press plans last minute, even if they’ve been shuffled to the side. Most Marvel premieres feature multiple screenwriters walking the red carpet, some of whom had been rewritten by other writers also walking the carpet.

Marvel announced DeMayo’s hiring in November 2021. The move was met with some level of excitement, as the scribe brought his identity as a gay Black man to the project, and made it a point in talking to the press about how growing up as the adopted son to white parents with a Korean sister in the South made the X-Men characters — and their struggles for acceptance by society — feel personal to him.

His silence on social media has been acute as he was a prolific poster, sharing X-Men tidbits as well as shirtless pictures of himself at the gym. For a time he also ran a non-explicit Only Fans account, all of which inspired the LGBTQ publication Out to declare him “the Sexy, Gay Marvel Writer & Showrunner to Know.”

Neither Marvel nor DeMayo have responded for comments about the firing but in show business it’s only a matter of time before things leak and rumors swirl around such events. We just hope it was creative differences or something along those lines and nothing more displeasing.

Lord knows it wasn’t easy for DeMayo to have taken on the task of reviving the beloved X-Men animated series as he was attacked online by users who accused him of Whitewashing the character of Sunspot by casting Brazilian actor Gui Agustini to voice the character in the series. It’s a damn VoiceOver role, man, but still it led to DeMayo deactivating his Twitter account for his own mental health.

And now this. SMH.

What do y’all think of Beau DeMayo’s departure from Marvel? Let us know in the comments section below.

Spoitfy Launches New Music Video Feature In Beta

Spotify: Music Videos Feature

Spotify is finally getting a feature it should have had: the ability to instantly watch music videos.

Today, Spotify announced that its music video feature is rolling out in “beta” and will feature a “limited catalog” in 11 markets.

As for the supported artists, Spotify users can see videos from Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Aluna, and Asake. Per Techcrunch, the company’s global head of consumer experience, Sten Garmark, says that users can expect Spotify’s entire music video catalog to include “thousands” of songs.

Per Spotify:

“So many times in my own experience and for countless others, music videos play a key role in hooking you: taking you from being a listener to leaning in and becoming a fan,” says Charlie Hellman, Vice President and Head of Music Product at Spotify. “They’re an important part of so many artists’ tool kits, and it’s a natural fit for them to live in the same place that more than half a billion people choose to listen to music.”

Users can access the music videos by hitting the “Switch to Video” icon above the song title for the songs supported by the feature.

When you hit the icon, the track will restart, and the video will appear in the center of the screen. You can flip your Android or iOS device to switch the aspect ratio to full screen.

The feature will also be available on desktop and the Spotify smart TV app, and it is currently live in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya.

Genmark says those markets specifically chosen were “based on a number of criteria, including market size and the availability of local content support.”

How BossMan Dlow Created a Hit Co-Signed By Lil Baby, Ciara, Quavo and Millions of Listeners

Initially, BossMan Dlow didn’t think he crafted a breakout hit in “Get In With Me” — after recording the track last year, he quickly discarded it into his dossier of files and got back to working on his next hopeful street anthem. But he’s happy to be wrong: the song become his debut entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-February and has since reached a No. 49 high in five weeks on the chart. In the March 1-7 tracking week, “Get In With Me” earned 9.6 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate.

The 25-year-old credits the slick rhymes on the trunk-rattling single to the alcohol flowing through him during a November studio session in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “Patrón was talking to me,” he tells Billboard. “That beat came on and I think I had just spent $1250 on some shoes — so that was in my brain, ‘Pair of shoes $1250.’ It just came to me on some drunk s–t to be real.”

Trending on Billboard

Dlow motivates listeners with his work hard, play hard mentality stacking paper and getting fly to floss on the competition. (“You wanna be a boss, you gotta pay the price,” he raps on “Get In With Me.”) And he isn’t apologizing for his making recent waves in the industry, either, breaking through after pounding on rap’s door seeking entry since 2019 (“I’m trying to step on they throat — ya hear me”).

He signed a record deal with Alamo Records last summer, and he’s the latest integral piece to an already-loaded R&B/hip-hop roster that boasts stars Rod Wave and Lil Durk. And with a label team in tow, life is moving faster than ever for the burgeoning Florida native. He’ll look to stay hot with the release of his gritty Mr. Beat the Road mixtape on Friday (March 15). The 17-track project boasts features from Sexyy Red, Rob49 and more.

Below, Dlow tells Billboard about the success of “Get In With Me,” manifesting a Future collab and his entrepreneurial plans outside of music.

Did you know “Get In With Me” was a hit when you first recorded it?

Hell nah. I had just ran through it. I heard the beat and that probably took me 45 minutes to an hour and then I was like, “You know what? F–k it, next song.” Type of s–t. That’s just another song. [I’m] punching in freestyling. I used to write. Now I don’t be having no time like that. I just go in that b—h and speak my mind, which is a little better.

Where were you eating hibachi on the 50th floor?

That’s boss activity. Get you a bad b—h and take her to the 50th floor and order the most expensive s–t you can. You know, just living life. Doing s–t to talk about doing s–t.

When did you know it was a hit outside your fanbase?

When I first did the freestyle, the s–t went up to like 200,000 likes. I ain’t never had that many likes. Then it was people reposting it. Rod Wave, Moneybagg Yo, even Ciara posted it, DaBaby wanted to get on it. He posted it. A lot of reaction from big rappers too so it’s really crazy.

I saw Quavo using your lyrics in an Instagram caption. What do you think about seeing that?

That s–t crazy. From playing these dudes’ [songs] to now they playing my music. I never talked to him, he just did that.

What was your reaction to making the Hot 100?

The s–t just keep getting crazier and crazier. That’s hard as f–k to do, bro. Especially rap music. It’s unbelievable.

Do you ever have the mentality of “I’m trying to make the Hot 100” when making music?

Nah, I was really in the streets. This is new to me. So my manager telling me, “You at No. 52 on Billboard [Hot 100].” Like damn, Billboard?! I don’t really know what it mean but you know that s–t is hard.

What do you think about “Get In With Me” taking off on TikTok and helping promote it?

Yeah, I seen Lil Baby posted it. It’s crazy. I really didn’t know that song was gonna do all that. That’s what I learned. It be the songs you don’t like. That’s just how it goes. I’m not saying like I thought it was trash, I’m saying more I put it to the [side] like this ain’t one of ‘em. This ain’t my main focus.

How’d you link up with the producer Dxntemadeit?

Yeah, I f–k with bro. Bro was in the studio with us and we got a couple beats off him. I f–k with his selection and how he make his beats. We started working and we gonna keep it going. We got us some [more] s–t coming for sure.

How did you end up signing with Alamo last year? The label is loaded with you, Lil Durk and Rod Wave to name a few.

Real street. My music started off in Tallahassee and started swinging its way up north and down south in Florida. Couple rappers were reposting my music from the start, and it ended up having me to keep going. [I signed with Alamo during] Last year around August or September. Yeah, we finna crush. We got no time to play.

What was your childhood like growing up? I know you were a hoops fan.

Yeah, Port Salerno. Small hood running around doing kid s–t. Riding dirt bikes and s–t. Couple of streets to ride on, couple of dirt path roads to ride on. Play a little basketball and it’s really just the streets after that. You’ll catch the streets young where I’m from. It’s all around. You end up doing street s–t and then you end up in trouble and then you end up all in now. Just some small city.

Who were some of your early music inspirations?

My people used to play old-school music. I used to play Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa. That was my s–t.

What did you find so appealing about Future’s music?

He’s been going for a long time and he can drop a hit whenever he wants to. It speaks for itself. I want to be long-lasting like that. He’s probably looking at 20 years right now.

We’re gonna get that Dlow and Future collab?

We definitely gon’ get it.

I read you wanted to change your name from BossMan Dlow. What was it gonna be?

Yeah, in 2019 I was BossMan Dlow and I got locked up and had some s–t to deal with. I didn’t want to get back out and rap with the same name I got locked up in. I was gonna just be Big Za. I had a little music, and I had my listeners knowing me as BossMan Dlow. I didn’t wanna throw them off so I just kept it.

What about “Slide” by H.E.R. helped you get through being locked up?

When I heard it, I just had to go by myself and zone out. I picture me just seat laid back, foreign car, I’m on [Interstate] 95 talking to this b—h and good za. I’m just sliding and handling business. That song put me in that mode for real. I used to play a lot of Roddy Ricch too.

What are some of your 2024 goals? [Is there] Another project on the way?

We’re trying to go on tour, bro. We trying to get this tour right. We trying to get to the arenas and sell out arenas and make better music. We gon’ stay consistent. We gon’ keep it rolling. Another tape and we gon’ have an album this year too.

Bossing up, what other ventures do you have lined up to create avenues for income outside of music?

I want a trucking business. We gon’ rent and sell cars. We gon’ buy property houses. We gon’ build houses. We gon’ own car washes and restaurants. We gonna do it all. I want every store you pass to be Dlow’s establishment. You could come work for Too Slippery Entertainment.

Travis Kelce is becoming quite the global jet-setter thanks to his relationship with Taylor Swift. Most recently, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end flew across the world to be with his superstar girlfriend during her six-night run of Eras Tour shows in Singapore, a trip he opened up about in the latest episode of his New Heights podcast Wednesday (March 13).

“I got to see two amazing shows of the Eras tour,” he told his older brother and co-host Jason Kelce, who recently retired from the Philadelphia Eagles. “The last of the leg that Taylor has until she’s back at it here in a couple of months.”

“But yeah outside of that, I got to get some lovely Singapore food and just catch the views,” he added.

A couple weeks prior, he caught a show in Australia and visited the Sydney Zoo with the 14-time Grammy winner. When asked by Jason on the podcast which city he preferred, Travis replied, “I absolutely love them both.”

Dolly Parton Reveals Beyoncé Recorded ‘Jolene’ Cover, Now Fans Wait To See If It Will Be Included On ‘Act II’

HipHopWired Featured Video

Remember last month, when Beyoncé released a pair country music songs, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages,” and white country music fans across America had a collective Caucasian conniption over it? After she dropped the two songs, people immediately started debating whether or not the Rennasainse singer was really cut from the country cloth, country music stations initially refused to play her new songs, and none of that prevented her from becoming the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Well, one person who has had Bey’s back through all of it is country legend Dolly Parton, and that hasn’t changed now that folks are wondering if Beyoncé will cover Parton’s iconic hit “Jolene” on her upcoming album Act II, which drops on March 29.

In fact, last week, Parton all but confirmed that a Beyoncé cover of her 1973 smash hit does, in fact, exist, although she didn’t reveal whether or not it would appear on the new album.

“Well, I think she has! I think she’s recorded ‘Jolene’ and I think it’s probably gonna be on her country album, which I’m very excited about that,” Parton told the Knoxville News Sentinel.

“I love her!” Parton said of the “Church Girl” artist. “She’s a beautiful girl and a great singer.”

From Knox News:

But Parton said she has always wanted Beyoncé to cover that song, and that the two artists have been in contact over the years. “We’ve kind of sent messages back and forth through the years. And she and her mother were like fans, and I was always touched that they were fans, and I always thought she was great.”

Parton praised Beyoncé when “Texas Hold ‘Em” became a No. 1 country song. “I’m a big fan of Beyoncé and very excited that she’s done a country album,” Parton wrote in a statement on Instagram. “So, congratulations on your Billboard Hot Country number one single.”

Of course, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Parton is excited about the possibility of Beyoncé covering “Jolene” since the 78-year-old also reacted positively when Lil Nas X covered the same song.

It’s just wonderful to see that when haters seem to be the loudest in the room, Parton refuses to let her voice be added to that particular echo chamber, and, instead, she serves as a beacon of support and positivity for those artists.

Anyway, fans are still just going to have to wait and see if Beyoncé’s “Jolene” cover makes it onto her new album. Either way, the Hive is ready. See y’all on March 23.
