Cardi B Hypes Upcoming Shakira Collaboration: ‘It Landed in My Lap’

Cardi B has dished out plenty of assists in her decorated career, but her upcoming collaboration holds an extra special meaning to her.

The Bronx native will check another item off her bucket list when she teams up with Shakira for a collab later this month. Cardi detailed how she ended up hopping on a track with the Colombian pop star during a recent interview with Million Dollaz Worth of Game.

“I always wanted to do a record with Shakira and it’s like, wow, it landed on my lap. It really landed on my lap, so I got a record coming out with her next week,” she said. “It’s like, ‘B—h, I’ll do whatever the f–k you want me to do, b—h. I’ll fly to Colombia.’ Like I’ll go over there right now.”

Cardi explained she caught up with Shakira during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year and revealed her sister won a talent show performing one of Shak’s songs when they were growing up. Shortly after, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer’s team reached out.

“I saw her in Paris and I talked to her,” Cardi added. “I don’t like being in b—-s face about it. I’m like, ‘I have to, my sister she did a talent show when she was in first grade and she won doing your song! I just love you so much, like you’re a part of my life.’ And then her team reached out to me. I’m like, ‘Owww, Shakira, Shakira.’ I was gagging.”

The anticipated collaboration remains untitled and based on Cardi’s timeline, should arrive before March expires. The 31-year-old isn’t taking her foot off the gas pedal in 2024 — even though she doesn’t have her driver’s license.

Cardi lit the fuse with her Hot 100 top 40 hit “Like What (Freestyle)” earlier this month and should earn another lofty chart entry with the fiery “Enough (Miami)” next week. And while she hasn’t announced a title or release date for herlong-awaited sophomore album, the rapper has been hinting that it could arrive later this year.

Teddy Swims’ ‘Lose Control’ Hits No. 1 on Adult Pop Airplay Chart

Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” lifts to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart (dated March 23).

The song marks the Atlanta native’s first leader on a Billboard radio ranking. It rose to No. 2 on Adult Alternative Airplay in January and ascends to a new No. 6 best on Pop Airplay.

The single concurrently keeps at its No. 2 high on the Billboard Hot 100. It drew 54.4 million in all-format radio audience, up 9%, March 8-14, according to Luminate, and reaches the top five (6-5) on the Radio Songs chart. It also tallied 23.7 million official streams and sold 12,000 downloads in the U.S. in the tracking week.

Teddy Swims has charted three songs on Adult Pop Airplay, starting with his featured turn on Meghan Trainor’s “Bad for Me,” which hit No. 15 in September 2022. Meanwhile, “The Door” pushes 40-36 in its second week on the survey.

“I’m super grateful that person [broke my heart],” Teddy Swims recently told Billboard of the origin of “Lose Control.” “I think it’s so great to know that that pain is necessary because … pain is paying the bills still. I’m trying to stop putting myself in positions to get hurt, because you’ll always have to do that, but they say the best revenge is success.”

Both “Lose Control” and “The Door” are from Teddy Swims’ debut full-length, I’ve Tried Everything but Therapy (Part I), released on SWIMS Int./Warner Records. The set hit a No. 25 high on the March 16-dated Billboard 200 chart.

Of the LP’s title, he mused that therapy might “change the fabric of my being. It’s just, like, my little tics and my little anxiety that I have, my own ways – which is not a right way to go about it. But … I’m comfortable in my existence.”

Joey Fatone Didn’t Even Tell His Parents About Secret *NSYNC Reunion at Justin Timberlake Show

Fans went wild at Justin Timberlake‘s Los Angeles concert last week when the singer brought out his *NSYNC bandmates for a surprise live reunion, debuting the group’s new song “Paradise” onstage. And in a new interview, Joey Fatone revealed the lengths he went to in order to keep it a secret leading up to the show.

“I didn’t even tell my parents,” the boy bander said on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Tuesday morning (March 19). “My father has a very large mouth. He’s very proud, so he likes to tell people… I didn’t tell my publicist, I didn’t tell nobody. Surprise!”

Trending on Billboard

In addition to “Paradise,” which appears on Timberlake’s new album Everything I Thought It Was, the “Mirrors” singer, Fatone, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass performed their smash ’90s hits “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” at The Wiltern in L.A. The performance came more than 20 years after *NSYNC went on hiatus in 2002, after which they wouldn’t officially reunite until 2023 to collaborate on “Better Place” for Timberlake’s Trolls Band Together animated threequel.

“It was really exciting, it was kind of just fun,” Fatone added of the show. “We have not been around for a long time, obviously… When we came out, it was just like, ‘What?’ Justin asked us to do the show and we were like ‘Yeah, why not.’ People went crazy.”

“When they all walked out … the screams were unbelievable,” chimed in the Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, who joined Fatone on the Hudson Show couch. “They didn’t miss a beat.”

McLean and Fatone kicked off their joint A Legendary Night Tour last week. The two stars have plans to play select dates across the United States through the end of March, with the shows promising live music, comedy and storytelling.

While chatting with J-Hud, the guys also reminisced on the time their respective bands faced off against each other for a charity basketball game in Europe back in the day. To spice things up, Bass had switched over to the Backstreet Boys team, while McLean played alongside the guys of *NSYNC.

“I think we won,” McLean said. “Whoops, sorry guys!”

Bebe Rexha Shares What She Learned From Kylie Minogue’s Grammy Win | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Bebe Rexha offers advice to her younger self, talks about learning from Kylie Minogue’s Grammy win & more backstage at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

Bebe Rexha:
Advice I would give my younger self is to, and I see it a lot of times because I’ve helped a lot of other artists, younger artists that are trying to make their way up. And I noticed that everybody’s always so antsy, you know, everybody feels that their time is running out. And I think that’s something, especially for women that’s something that’s been created in our heads to be like, “Oh, the clock is ticking.” But when it’s for other men and other artists, when they get older, it’s hotter, that they’re sexy and they have gray hair.

But you know I was nominated for Grammy this year and you know who won in that category? Kylie Minogue, who’s 50 and she’s still the queen of dance. So I feel like what I’m learning and what I would tell my younger self is to take a chill pill. It’s gonna all work out. Age has nothing to do with it. It’s all talent.

THE BOYZ
Hello we are THE BOYZ and you are watching Billboard News

Tetris Kelly
Hey, what’s up it’s Tetris with Billboard News and we get to have some fun today I’m hanging out with some fellas from THE BOYZ.

Tetris Kelly
You just dropped a brand new project Phantasy Pt.3 So now that it’s all out, I mean, you guys decided to release it in three parts. But what makes this one different than the first two?

Well, we took the word Phantasy and split it up into three different kind of worlds. And this one is kind of like funeral slash graduation. It’s kind of saying goodbye to the past and welcoming the future. So it’s kind of a emotional but hopeful kind of vibe.

Tetris Kelly
Okay, so can you tell me now what’s part of the funeral? What are some things you guys think you’re saying goodbye to?

Well, in a graduation, you’re essentially saying goodbye to your previous years and letting go of the past. If you’re looking at our music video, we’re actually playing students, we’re actually at a graduation. And so you can feel a lot of the vibes watching the music video.

Sufjan Stevens Musical ‘Illinoise’ Sets Broadway Debut

Sufjan Stevens is bringing the noise to Broadway. The acclaimed singer/songwriter’s new musical, Illinoise, is slated to graduate to the Great White Way after sold-out productions at New York’s Park Avenue Armory and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater when it opens at New York’s St. James Theatre on April 24.

The show is set to the songs from Stevens’ fifth studio LP, 2005’s concept album Illinoise (also known as Sufjan Stevens Invites You to: Come on Feel the Illinoise) which features songs and characters based on the Prairie state as the follow-up to his previous “state” album, 2003’s Michigan.

The show will be directed and choreographed by Tony-winner Justin Peck (Carousel, West Side Story), with an original story by Peck and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibbles Drury (Fairview, Marys Seacole).

Trending on Billboard

The cast of Illinoise includes: Yesenia Ayala (West Side Story film), Kara Chan (Twyla Tharp Dance), Ben Cook (West Side Story film), Gaby Diaz (So You Think You Can Dance? winner, Maestro), Jeanete Delgado (Miami City Ballet), Carlos Falu (West Side Story film), Christine Flores (Dance Heginbotham), Jada German (Twyla Tharp Dance) and Zachary Gonder (Carmen at Lyric Opera), among others. The vocalists and band for the show will be announced soon.

According to an announcement, the show “brings the original story to life, set to the entirety of Stevens’ album with new arrangements by composer, pianist, and frequent Stevens collaborator Timo Andres, ranging in style from DIY folk and indie rock to marching band and ambient electronics, performed live by an 11-member band and three vocalists.”

“We’re absolutely thrilled to bring Illinoise to the St. James Theatre on Broadway. This project has been ruminating in my mind for nearly 20 years, which makes this moment even more sublime,” said Peck in a statement. “The audience response throughout our engagement at Fisher Center at Bard, Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Park Avenue Armory has been extraordinary, and we feel lucky that we get to continue sharing this unique show with future audiences on Broadway.”

Peck described the show as a coming-of-age story that “takes the audience on a journey through the American heartland — from campfire storytelling to the edges of the cosmos — all told in through a unique blend of music, dance, and theater. On behalf of my team, we welcome this rare opportunity with full hearts.”

Playwright Sibblies Drury added, “Supporting the craft of each of the artists involved in making up this show has been a joy and an inspiration. For me, the thing that makes Illinoise so special is how it allows incredible performers to come together with an audience and welcome emotion and connection with open arms. It is rare to have an experience, in a public space, that is moving on an elemental level, so we are all incredibly gratified to bring Illinoise to the St. James on Broadway.”

The musical’s limited engagement will run through August 10, with tickets on sale now here. The show is produced for Broadway by Orin Wolf, John Styles and David Binder in association with Seaview and executive produced by Nate Koch and co-produced by Thomas O. Kriegsmann and the Fisher Center at Bard.

Why Public-Private Partnerships Are Key to Oak View Group’s Global Expansion Plans

The Oak View Group (OVG) will soon enter a key phase of its long-planned pivot to international markets with the opening of Coop Live in Manchester, United Kingdom, next month.

After its record post-pandemic run — which included opening seven arenas in 16 months, including Climate Change Arena in Seattle, UBS Arena in New York and Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, Calif. — the Tim Lewieke-led management and development company will transition from U.K. venue developer to U.K. venue operator in one of Europe’s largest concert and live entertainment economies.

First Manchester, then the world, says Francesca Leiweke-Bodie, OVG’s COO (and Leiweke’s daughter). She explains the United Kingdom will be the launch point for expanding the company’s private-public partnership model, which looks to government groups to aid in land acquisition in exchange for fully private financing and development work. Leiweke-Bodie says the model is key to driving expansion opportunities into Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where huge gaps in the world’s touring infrastructure prevent popular arena and stadium tours from accessing hundreds of millions of fans.

Trending on Billboard

Billboard recently caught up with Leiweke-Bodie to discuss the opening of Coop Live and detail OVG’s near-term expansion plans around the globe.

Why did OVG decide to begin their international expansion efforts with the Manchester project?

London and the U.K. have always been a frontrunner for where we as a company want to plant a flag and show the other countries and municipalities that we’re speaking to about public-private partnerships and prove what is possible when the private sector can step in and invest. That doesn’t happen as much overseas, where the market is really heavily driven by municipal financing. Having this project in the U.K., a $375 million privately funded arena with huge community support and more than $1 million going back to the local business — when other potential partners come to Manchester and see what we are doing, there is no doubt that we’re the real deal and will deliver on our promises.

What’s the biggest challenge OVG faces in its efforts to expand internationally?

I think the hardest thing to come by, whether it’s domestically or internationally, is land. We want to build in the urban core. We want to be where the fans want to be — in the city centers. We can do everything else. We’ll build it. We’ll finance it. We’ll book it. We’ll take the risk. But the partnership that we’re always looking for is the land opportunity. Most of these cities are much older than the United States with dense urban cores that we can’t even fathom. To find four or five acres available to build these types of projects with access to public transit is the crux of what we’re trying to create with these city partnerships. There’s also inbound opportunities from local owners and developers that see an opportunity to take land that they might have identified for retail and say, “Let’s rethink this.”

Once the Manchester facility opened, what’s next for OVG?

Hamilton, Ontario is next. It’s an existing 18,000-seat arena we’ve already started work on, taking the building down to its studs and [which] will reopen in late April. It’s the first project in Toronto that was a public-private partnership and ultimately became a renovation project, but it’s effectively a new arena. In North America, there’s only a few strategic markets left where one could make a really big difference with another arena. But overseas, we have a tremendous amount of opportunity because of the growth internationally of global music, from American country music to Latin.

What other metropolitan characteristics appeal to OVG?

Countries or cities that not only attract from surrounding countries but serve as the point of destination for a much broader area. One example is Sao Paulo in Brazil. From a financial perspective, Sao Paulo is an incredible point of destination for not only Brazil, but for Latin America. That’s why we want to plant our flag there because it doesn’t have an arena. Vienna, Austria is the same thing. You know, it is central to continental Europe. You can get to it from six different countries via car. We have about two dozen cities like that we’ve identified.

How does programming and booking drive the OVG strategy?

That’s such a key element. The first domino that we were really thinking about and analyzing from a construction and design perspective is making sure that the building is both turnkey and equipped with all acoustic treatments and back-of-house amenities to accommodate major tours. We talk to local promoters, and figure out what is coming in the rider and work with our partners at the building to alleviate costs. Arenas have to compete with the stadium shows and we have to make the economics work so we’re really looking at the take-home revenue for an artist to make sure that their touring costs are competitive and can exceed the expectations of fans and market partners.

Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Bailey Zimmerman & More Among First Round of 2024 CMT Music Awards Performers

The fan-voted CMT Music Awards, slated for April 7 at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, are getting even hotter.

Bailey Zimmerman, Jelly Roll, Keith Urban, Lainey Wilson and Sam Hunt are the first round of performers who will join previously announced performer (and CMT Music Awards host) Kelsea Ballerini on the CMT Music Awards stage, in the heart of the live music capital of the world.

Jelly Roll, Ballerini and Wilson are among the evening’s top nominees, alongside Cody Johnson and Megan Moroney, who each have three nominations apiece leading up to the show. The CMT Music Awards will air on CBS and stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

Last year, Jelly Roll dominated the CMT Music Awards, taking home the most trophies that evening, with three career-surging wins. This year, he is again nominated for three accolades, including the coveted video of the year.

Trending on Billboard

Zimmerman, who is currently on a sold-out solo touring run, will offer a first-time performance of his current single, the top 20 Country Airplay hit “Where It Ends.” A three-time Billboard Country Airplay chart-topper, Zimmerman is also looking to earn his first CMT Music Awards win this year, in the male video of the year category.

Urban will make history when he takes the CMT Music Awards stage, for his 20th performance — marking the most in CMT Music Awards history. He’ll offer a rendition of “Straight Line,” the first single from his forthcoming 12th studio project.

Fresh off her inaugural Grammy win earlier this year, singer-songwriter-actress Wilson will perform her new song “Country’s Cool Again,” which is also the namesake for her upcoming headlining tour, launching in Nashville in May.

Hunt, who is currently on his arena-headlining Outskirts Tour, has earned nine CMT Music Awards nominations during his career, and previously won the breakthrough video of the year accolade. His current single “Outskirts” is in the top 20 on the Country Airplay chart, but Hunt will offer new music during his performance, debuting a new song during the CMT Music Awards broadcast.

The CMT Music Awards relocated to Texas last year, moving from its longtime home in Nashville. The awards show, originally known as the Music City News Awards, held its inaugural event in 1967; the awards celebration has been known as the CMT Music Awards since 2005.

Voting is currently open at vote.cmt.com, through April 1, while voting for the video of the year honor, presented by Hilton, will remain active into the show.

Additional performers and presenters for this year’s CMT Music Awards will be revealed at a later date.

Coupled with the previously announced joint venture with Morgan Stanley and $266.5 million asset-backed securitization (ABS) transaction, these financial maneuvers provide Kobalt with over $1 billion in funding for acquisitions and investments.

The RCF “will fuel our growth initiatives and allow us to further fortify our position as an industry trailblazer,” Kobalt CFO Catrin Drabble said in a statement. The RCF was led by Truist and refinances existing Kobalt debt. “Along with the Francisco Partners transaction and Morgan Stanley joint venture, these transactions enable us to continue our investment into the business and our technology with far greater flexibility, simultaneously strengthening the best-in-class service we deliver to our songwriters and partners.”

Trending on Billboard

Kobalt, which boasts a catalog of over 850,000 songs, has had a busy few years reworking its balance sheet. In November 2023, Kobalt received a $700 million investment from Morgan Stanley Tactical Value, a part of the investment bank that puts money into alternative assets such as music. A year earlier, Francisco Partners acquired a majority stake in Kobalt in a deal that also included investments from Dundee Partners and Matt Pincus’ MUSIC.

The company also sold artist development company AWAL to Sony in 2022 for $430 million and sold the Kobalt Music Royalty Fund II to Chord Music Partners, a joint venture of KKR and Dundee Partners, in 2021 for $1.1 billion.

The ABS, which Billboard covered on Feb. 21, comprises over 5,000 musical works from 66 writers spanning more than 50 catalogs. ATLAS SP Partners was the sole structuring agent and joint bookrunner alongside Truist Securities. Investors’ increased interest in music as an asset class led to numerous previous ABS deals, including HarbourView Equity Partners last week and Concord and Chord Music Partners in 2022.
