Dua Lipa On the Inspiration Behind ‘Radical Optimism,’ Favorite Spice Girl & More | Billboard News

Dua Lipa talks about the inspiration behind the interesting cover photo for her upcoming third album ‘Radical Optimism,’ how she wrote her latest single “Training Season,” how the album is so influenced by English bands and artists like Oasis, Portishead and Massive Attack, who her favorite Spice Girl is and more!

Tetris Kelly
‘Radical Optimism’ your third album, how is this new era of Dua Lipa feeling.

Dua Lipa
It feels good I mean it feels for lack of a better word radically optimistic

Tetris Kelly
The date is May 3rd and the project is Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’ and we had the sweetest chat with the pop star about the brand new album, bad dates and oh, and the Spice Girls. The cover is kind of a juxtaposition, right you’re in this calm water, the shark so tell me the inspiration behind the cover art?

Dua Lipa
Throughout the whole record there is this idea of chaos happening around and me trying to push through it in a way that feels authentic and honest. To me this is obviously an overly dramatic way to to explain that but I feel like it says radical optimism to me in the in the clearest sense of being in deep waters

Tetris Kelly
And authentic she’s being, she says “Training Season” is over.

Dua Lipa
In a way I been on a couple of dates, like a string of string of bad dates.

Tetris Kelly
Oh, no.

Dua Lipa
I went into the studio and I was like, right I’m done. You know, like, I don’t want to like be anyone like “Training Season” is over, I’m done training up these boys. And what started off as a joke in the studio ended up being like “Training Season” became like the term that we stuck with.

Kelly Clarkson Slows Down Katy Perry’s ‘Wide Awake’ for Stunning Kellyoke Cover

Hold the caffeine, Kelly Clarkson is wide awake. On the latest episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the three-time Grammy winner shared a breathtaking cover of Katy Perry‘s 2012 smash, “Wide Awake,” stripping it back to feature just piano and vocals.

Taking the Kellyoke stage with her pianist Tuesday (March 19), Clarkson went without her usual full band to let her unreal voice shine even more than usual. The musician also slightly slowed down Perry’s track, which allowed the “Stronger” singer to stretch out certain lines and add her own impressive high notes.

“Falling from cloud nine,” belted Clarkson, dressed in a grey skirt and black, knee-high boots. “Crashing from the high/ I’m letting go tonight.”

Trending on Billboard

Released as the final single from Perry’s Teenage Dream album cycle, “Wide Awake” appeared on the set’s 2012 deluxe reissue, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection. It peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year, remaining on the chart for a total of 26 weeks.

Clarkson has previously covered Perry’s “The One That Got Away” and “Roar” on her Daytime Emmy-winning talk show. Earlier this week, she put her own spin on Maren Morris’ “The Bones.”

The Voice alum’s new performance comes just over a week after she filed a new lawsuit against her ex-husband, music executive Brandon Blackstock, alleging that he and his father’s management firm had been violating state labor rules since the beginning of their relationship. With the suit — which comes just months after she won $2.6 million from him in a previous ruling — Clarkson seeks the return of “any and all commissions, fees, profits, advances, producing fees or other monies” she paid to Blackstock’s father’s company, Starstruck Entertainment, dating back to 2007.

In June, Clarkson released her tenth studio album, Chemistry. The 14-track set, which featured collaborations from Steve Martin and Sheila E., peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

Spotify Says It Paid $1 Million to 1,250 Artists in 2023. Which Artists Might They Be?

Spotify paid out $9 billion in music royalties in 2023, with $4.5 billion going to independent artists. That huge pool of money is divvied up amongst hundreds of thousands of artists — some wealthy enough to live without royalty checks while many others need streaming to help keep their lights on.

The number of artists who made at least $10,000 in royalties from Spotify rose 16% to 66,000, according to the company’s latest Loud & Clear report released Tuesday (Mar. 19). That was twice the growth rate in artists earning at least $10,000 as the 8% uptick seen in 2022 when that number rose to 57,000.

The number of artists who reached other thresholds also increased at a higher clip in 2023 than in 2022. Last year, the number of artists who made $100,000 from Spotify in 2023 rose 15% to 11,600, compared to 10,100 the prior year, when the number was up 6%. And there were 1,250 artists who generated over $1 million from Spotify in 2023, an 18% increase from 1,060 in 2022 when the $1 million club grew by just 2%.

Trending on Billboard

The company’s fourth annual Loud & Clear report provides an update on the company’s goal of allowing 1 million creators the opportunity to make a living from their art, a statement that goes back to CEO Daniel Ek at the company’s 2017 investor day presentation. How much an artist requires to pay the bills will vary by country, but it’s safe to say Spotify isn’t allowing 1 million artists to quit their day jobs and be working musicians.

Nevertheless, the number of artists who made what could be called a substantial amount of royalties on the platform continues to grow. The number of artists who made $10,000 from Spotify (66,000) last year was 2.8 times the 23,400 who reached that level in 2017. Compared to 2017, the number of artists who reached the $100,000 threshold in 2023 (11,600) was 2.7 times higher; and the number of artists who earned $1 million (4,300) last year was also 2.7 times higher. Over that period, Spotify’s annual revenue grew 3.2 times, rising from 4.1 billion euros ($4.6 billion) to 13.2 billion euros ($14.3 billion), according to the company’s financial statements.

By Spotify’s own estimate, the universe of working musicians is much larger than the 66,000 artists who earned $10,000 last year. The company says there are 225,000 emerging or professional recording artists globally. Separately, 235,000 artists have released at least 10 songs in their careers, a group that averages at least 10,000 monthly listeners.

Loud & Clear makes a point of highlighting how independent artists can make a living from streaming royalties. Last year, a quarter of the 66,000 artists in the $10,000 club were self-distributed through do-it-yourself platforms such as DistroKid and TuneCore. Unlike artists signed to record labels, self-distributed artists can pocket the entirety of their streaming royalties minus any distribution fees. Artists signed to labels may make more overall than independent artists, but they earn a fraction of the total receipts and must repay advances and marketing and promotion expenses.

Another Loud & Clear point of emphasis is that streaming is benefitting artists around the world. Indeed, the global nature of streaming platforms means music can easily travel from any corner of the globe to a mature streaming market where a high proportion of paid subscribers provides attractive royalties compared to ad-supported platforms. Of the 66,000 artists who generated at least $10,000 in Spotify royalties in 2023, more than half are from countries where English is not the first language. That’s not surprising given that Spotify is available in 184 countries and territories and has a major presence in large markets — such as India, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and France — with strong local, non-English music scenes.

To get a sense of which artists might be in Spotify’s $1 million club, Billboard examined a list of Luminate’s top 1,000 U.S. artists ranked by audio on-demand streaming. The list includes some young artists who have found success in the streaming era — such as Jelly Roll (No. 66), The Neighbourhood (No. 102) and PinkPantheress (No. 144) — and rely on streaming royalties more than more established artists with greater touring success.

Many of the top streaming artists are older musicians who earn far more from touring than streaming royalties: Fleetwood Mac (No. 54), George Strait (No. 97), AC/DC (No. 110), Elton John (No. 125), P!nk (No. 128), Billy Joel (No. 169), Journey (No. 172), Motley Crue (No. 395) and Garth Brooks (No. 489), among many others.

The top 1,000 list also includes bands that broke up long ago or haven’t released new music in decades: the Beatles (No. 49), Queen (No. 87), Nirvana (No. 112), Creedence Clearwater Revival (No. 134), Led Zeppelin (No. 151), Abba (No. 318), Bee Gees (No. 328), The Smiths (No. 341) and the Grateful Dead (No. 444). Those music royalties are undoubtedly welcomed, but these artists are certainly secure financially without them.

Other top-streaming artists are deceased: Juice WRLD (No. 15), 2Pac (No. 89), Frank Sinatra (No. 109), Elvis Presley (No. 146), Notorious B.I.G. (No. 150), Bob Marley (No. 167), Johnny Cash (No. 245), Dean Martin (No. 336), Prince (No. 362), Jimmy Buffet (No. 425), Tom Petty (No. 428), David Bowie (No. 441) and John Denver (No. 470).

Some artists don’t even pocket their Spotify royalties because they’ve sold their rights to investors. Katy Perry (No. 82) sold her recorded music catalog to Litmus Capital. Kenny Chesney (No. 157) sold a majority stake in his recorded music catalog to Hipgnosis Song Management. Jason Aldean (No. 50) sold a portion of his recorded music catalog to Spirit Music Group. Primary Wave acquired a 50% stake in Whitney Houston’s master recording revenue. The list of contemporary artists who sold their publishing rights is long; the list also includes Future (No. 12), Bruno Mars (No. 57), Imagine Dragons (No. 58) and Metro Boomin (No. 132).

Artists in the $1 million club are outliers, however. Anyone fortunate enough to be earning $1 million a year from Spotify already makes a good living from touring, merchandise, sponsorships and other areas. The point of Loud & Clear is to highlight the financial opportunities Spotify provides to those artists the report calls the “most dependent on streaming as part of their livelihood.” For that middle class of artists, streaming pays much better than it used to. While only a small fraction of 1 million artists can say they make a living from Spotify, the number rises every year.

Dr. Dre Gets Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame With Eminem, Snoop Dogg & 50 Cent By His Side

Dr. Dre is following in the footsteps of rap peers like Ice Cube, 2Pac and Snoop Dogg as the West Coast legend was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dre officially received the 2,775th star during a star-studded presentation on Tuesday afternoon (March 19). Friends and hip-hop associates who have been in Dre’s corner for decades, like Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Eminem, Jimmy Iovine and more, were in attendance.

The production icon took the podium after Iovine and Snoop Dogg showered Dr. Dre with love and appreciation for what he’s given to hip-hop.

“Growing up in Compton, I never imagined that I would one day be represented here among some of my childhood heroes,” he began.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to make a living doing exactly what I love to do. How about that? Isn’t that the dream?” Dre asked the crowd. “Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of finding and nurturing new talent as well as pushing the boundaries in hip-hop both in content and substance.”

Dr. Dre continued: “But I’m most proud of elevating the sound and clarity of how we experience hip-hop. Getting that thing right is one of my greatest achievements. I love that this honor is unique to Los Angeles and brings fans from all over the world to connect with their favorite artists. I’ll be here forever.”

The superproducer broke through as the sonic architect and co-founder of the seminal rap group N.W.A. He released his The Chronic acclaimed debut album in 1992, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Dre left N.W.A. and went to crank out anthems for Death Row Records with fellow rap legends like Snoop, 2Pac and plenty more. With support from Interscope co-founder Jimmy Iovine, Dre launched Aftermath Entertainment in 1996 and is credited with the discovery of Eminem and 50 Cent.

Dr. Dre earned his first No. 1 atop the Billboard Hot 100 with 2Pac’s “California Love” in 1995. Other No. 1 hits on Dre’s decorated résumé include 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” Mary J. Blige’s “Family Affair” and Eminem’s “Crack A Bottle.” As a credited artist, he also reached the Hot 100 apex as part of BLACKstreet’s “No Diggity” in 1996.

Billboard named Dr. Dre as the greatest rap producer of all-time as the 59-year-old topped our list in the No. 1 slot last year.

Travis Kelce Reportedly in Talks to Host ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?’ Reboot

Travis Kelce is a whiz on the field, but soon, he may put his smarts to the test elsewhere. According to a report from Variety, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is in talks to host a Prime Video reboot of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which would this time employ celebrity guests in place of elementary schoolers.

The publication attributes the information to two unnamed sources familiar with the discussions. Those people also apparently noted that there are questions regarding “how much of a commitment Kelce could make to the venture if he continues playing football.”

Trending on Billboard

Billboard has reached out to Kelce’s managers for comment.

Originally hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? first aired on Fox in 2007. Running for a total of four seasons, the game show saw adult contestants competing to answer grade-school-level questions with the help of a group of actual elementary schoolers. In 2019, the series was briefly revived on Nickelodeon with John Cena at the helm.

As mentioned above, Prime Video’s version would reportedly feature celebrities instead of a panel of children, as it did in previous iterations. Whether one of those stars will be Taylor Swift, who has been dating Kelce since last summer, or any of his Chiefs teammates, such as quarterback Patrick Mahomes, remains to be seen.

The revamped show wouldn’t be the football pro’s first time dipping his toes into the world of entertainment. Kelce has starred in a number of commercials in recent years, including for brands such as Pfizer, State Farm and Experian, and he co-hosts a podcast called New Heights with his older brother, retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.

In 2016, Travis starred in the E! reality dating series Catching Kelce, which found a group of 50 women competing against each other for his heart. The Ohio native would later make fun of the show while hosting Saturday Night Live in 2023, quipping, “It was kind of like The Bachelor, except instead of roses I handed out footballs, and instead of watching, people did not.”

He added at the time, “It was a little embarrassing, but I got really good at reality TV.”

PinkPantheress Encourages Her Younger Self to Get Into Music Faster | Billboard’s Women in Music 2024

PinkPantheress says she wishes she would have gotten into music faster when giving advice to her younger self backstage at Billboard’s Women in Music 2024.

PinkPantheress
Some advice that I give to my younger self would be to just dive in head first into music sooner because there’s no need to be shy or to be concerned about what other people think about the craft that you make. Because if you believe it’s going to be successful then it doesn’t matter what people think. It’s just worth going for it, see where it goes. If it goes well, then great. If it doesn’t go well, then at least you tried.

And we’re just proud of each other.”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Breaks Disney+ Record for Most-Streamed Music Film After Just 3 Days

Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour is still breaking records, five months after its initial release. The blockbuster concert film has already become Disney+’s most-streamed music special of all time, breaking the record just three days after premiering on the platform March 14.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the three-hour-plus project was viewed for a collective 16.2 million hours in its opening weekend. It surpasses other music films such as Swift’s Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, Elton John: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, Black Is King: A Film by Beyoncé and The Beatles: Get Back.

The “Anti-Hero” singer’s movie first premiered in theaters in October, upon which it immediately became the highest-grossing concert film in history with more than $92.8 million after just one weekend. In December, Swift made a slightly expanded version available to rent on-demand in celebration of her 34th birthday, including previously scrapped performances of “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live.”

The Disney+ version of the film features its own set of new content, showcasing Swift’s performances of “Cardigan” and surprise songs “Maroon,” “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” “You Are in Love” and “I Can See You” for the first time. Leading up to Eras Tour‘s streaming debut, the pop star unveiled sneak peeks at each new surprise song one day at a time on Good Morning America.

Swift’s acclaimed global trek is still going strong, more than a year after kicking off in Glendale, Ariz. in March 2023. The 14-time Grammy winner is currently taking a two-month break from the road as she gears up to release her new album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, having just wrapped a six-night stint in Singapore. In May, she’ll pick up where she left off with a series of shows in Paris.

“Just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who traveled and put so much effort into being at our shows,” she wrote in a recent Instagram post. “See you in May when we get back to the Eras Tour!! In the meantime I’ve got an album to release…”
