Anghami Shares Jump 59% After Saudi Media Company MBC Group Takes 14% Stake

Shares of Abu Dhabi-based music streaming company Anghami soared 59% on Wednesday (March 20) after an SEC filing showed media company MBC Group has taken a 13.7% stake in the company. Saudi Arabia-based MBC Group bills itself as “the largest and leading media company in the Middle East and North Africa.” Founded in London in 1991 as a satellite TV channel, MBC Group’s properties now include 13 free-to-air TV channels, three radio stations and Shahid, a leading Arabic streaming platform. MBC Group also owns MBC Studios, a content production house, and MBC Academy, an educational and training platform.

Trending on Billboard

The two companies already had a marketing partnership that renewed in 2022. The partnership gives Anghami exposure across MBC Group’s programming. MBC Group “create[s] new opportunities for rising music talent,” Fadel Zahreddine, Group Director of Emerging Media at MBC GROUP, said at the time, “and we continue to inspire upcoming musicians by encouraging platforms like Anghami to give them the creative space to publish their premium music content.”

Investors appeared to take MBC Group’s ownership stake as a positive sign that Anghami would have the financial and promotional resources to build a profitable business. Anghami shares have fallen 86% since its Feb. 4, 2022 debut on the Nasdaq. The company was warned by the Nasdaq exchange in Nov. 2023 for trading under the $1 threshold for the previous 30 days. The Nasdaq gives companies 180 days to regain compliance or face delisting from the exchange. Anghami said it would “consider available options to cure the deficiency,” including a reverse share split.

Wednesday’s closing price is well below the valuation of two recent investments in Anghami, however. Anghami received a $5 million strategic investment from SRMG in Aug. 2023 that valued Anghami at $2.50 per share. A Nov. 2023 deal with OSN Group that valued Anghami at $3.65 per share — and caused Anghami’s share price to jump 97% to a 52-week high of $3.11 — will provide Anghami with the OSN+ video streaming platform and result in an investment up to $50 million.

Anghami shares traded as high as $16.80 in April 2022 but have fallen 86% below the $11.00 closing price on its first day of trading on Feb. 4, 2022, after merging with Vistas Media Acquisition Company, a special purpose acquisition company. In the 55 trading days in 2024, Anghami has closed below $1.00 29 times.

In the first nine months of 2023, Anghami had 1.73 million subscribers and adjusted revenue of $30 million, up 8% year over year. The company has not yet announced full-year 2023 results.

Erv Woolsey, Longtime Manager for George Strait, Dies at 80

Artist manager and record promotion executive Eugene Ervine “Erv” Woolsey, 80, died Wednesday (Mar. 20) in Clearwater, Florida, following surgery complications.

Woolsey was best known as the longtime manager for and champion of country music superstar and Country Music Hall of Fame member George Strait, as well as for managing and championing artists including Lee Ann Womack, Dierks Bentley, Clay Walker and Ronnie Milsap.

“My manager for around 45 years and most importantly my friend for even longer, Erv Woolsey, passed away this morning,” Strait said in a statement. “He had complications from a surgery and just couldn’t overcome it. He was a very tough man, and fought hard, but sadly it was just too much. We will miss him so very much and will never forget all the time we had together. Won’t ever be the same without him.”

Trending on Billboard

Woolsey was born on Feb. 15, 1944, in Houston. After graduating from Southwest Texas State University in 1969 with a BBA degree in business, Woolsey began working in Decca Records’ promotion department. He spent time working at several labels before relocating to Nashville in 1973, when he began serving as the head of promotions for ABC Records’ newly-launched country division. There, he helped guide the careers of Johnny Rodriguez, Jimmy Buffett, Billy “Crash” Craddock, Donna Fargo, Freddy Fender and the Amazing Rhythm Aces. Simultaneously, Woolsey and his then-wife Connie owned the San Marcos, Tex., club The Prairie Rose, where Woolsey first saw and became acquainted with Strait. He immediately recognized Strait’s talent and booked him at the venue as a regular performer.

Woolsey followed his success at ABC Records with an unprecedented run at MCA during the 1980s, bringing radio success for artists including Barbara Mandrell, Don Williams, Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker, Conway Twitty and the Oak Ridge Boys, all of whom would become members of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

In 1981, following the success of the John Travolta film Urban Cowboy and on the cusp of a new traditionalist movement, Woolsey convinced MCA Records head Jim Fogelsong to sign Strait to the label, where Strait remains to this day. On MCA, Strait released his debut single, “Unwound,” which had an undercurrent of Texas swing; the song reached No. 6 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart and launched Strait’s juggernaut career. In 1984, Woolsey left MCA and devoted himself to managing Strait’s career full-time.

Since then, Strait has earned entertainer of the year accolades spanning four decades and won a Grammy. Strait and Woolsey broke ground with the 1992 Jerry Weintraub-produced film Pure Country, as well as the stadium-sized George Strait Country Festival Tours, which began in 1995 and featured artists including Alan Jackson, The Chicks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Womack and Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel.

Though Strait has retired from traditional touring, he still plays a handful of stadium dates each year, most recently sharing his stage and audience with Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town.

Along the way, Woolsey also found success as a songwriter, co-writing “In Too Deep” on Strait’s 1985 project Something Special, as well as the Hot Country Songs chart-topper “I Can Still Make Cheyenne,” which earned a BMI Million-Air award for garnering more than 1 million spins on terrestrial radio. Woolsey also developed a series of clubs and bars, including opening Nashville clubs The Trap with business partner Steve Ford and the Music Row-area mainstay Losers, which was designed as a hole-in-the-wall establishment for publishers, producers and songwriters. Losers’ success led to Winners right next door, as well as the Dawg House. Woolsey also served on the Country Music Association’s board of directors as well as the board of directors for the Tennessee Museum of History.

Late into his career, Woolsey continued his passion for developing new talent, signing artists including Ian Munsick, Davisson Brothers Band, Kylie Frey, Triston Marez, Nick Davisson, Zach Neil, Stone Senate and Vince Herman over just the past few years.

A longtime fan and passionate member of the horse racing community, Woolsey is a lifetime member of the Texas Thoroughbred Association and was a regular at Kentucky’s Churchill Downs and Keeneland, including Super Stock’s run in the Kentucky Derby Grade 1 in 2021 and Jordan’s Henny in the Kentucky Oaks Grade 1 in 2017.

Universal Music Group Nashville Chair/CEO Cindy Mabe told Billboard in a statement, “Erv Woolsey was a really special human. God broke the mold with this character who is as much a part of the fabric of country music as George Strait. He was a legendary manager, a promotion man at heart, and an entrepreneur who loved music and built his career and businesses around serving the creative community and enjoying life, a good laugh, horse races, and country music. I am honored to have known this iconic country music hero and benefit from so many of the decisions and deals he brokered on behalf of both MCA Nashville and country music in general. He will be sorely missed.”

“Without the savvy and determination of Erv Woolsey, we may never have heard of George Strait,” said Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in a statement. He added, “When execs urged Strait to change his image and his sound, Erv as his manager backed Strait’s determination to stay true to himself. You know the rest. Strait became a superstar who filled stadiums, and together Strait and Erv helped lead country music back to its traditions. All of us owe Erv Woolsey an enormous debt of gratitude for leading with his convictions and always supporting artists and new talent.”

Woolsey is survived by his son Clint, ex-wife Connie, brother David and sister Beth. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mavis Woolsey, and brother Johnny Woolsey.

Details on funeral arrangements will be shared at a future date.

Judas Priest’s ‘Invincible Shield’ Reigns on Top Hard Rock Albums Chart

Judas Priest lands its third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart, as Invincible Shield starts atop the ranking dated March 23.

Invincible Shield bows with 25,000 equivalent album units earned March 8-14 in the U.S., according to Luminate. Of that sum, 23,000 units are via album sales.

It’s the first new No. 1 on Top Hard Rock Albums in 2024; every week since the Nov. 4, 2023, list, the survey had been ruled by Queen’s Greatest Hits (as part of its 160-week run atop the ranking in all). The last new ruler had been Beartooth’s The Surface, which premiered at No. 1 on the Oct. 28, 2023, chart.

Judas Priest’s previous leaders on Top Hard Rock Albums, which began in 2007, are 2014’s Redeemer of Souls and 2018’s Firepower.

Concurrently, Invincible Shield starts at No. 6 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums and at No. 4 on Top Rock Albums. On the all-format Billboard 200, it begins at No. 18, the 13th top 40 for the veteran rockers; they first reached that area when British Steel peaked at No. 34 in 1980.

The lead single from Invincible Shield is “Crown of Horns,” which jumps 34-28 on Mainstream Rock Airplay. It’s the band’s first airplay appearance since “Lightning Strike” peaked at No. 21 on Mainstream Rock Airplay in 2018.

Its title track, “Invincible Shield,” also premieres on the multi-metric Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, Judas Priest’s first entry (it debuted in 2020), at No. 16. It earned 621,000 official U.S. streams.

In the days since Eternal Sunshine arrived — and subsequently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — Grande has been reposting a number of clips from famous fans enjoying “The Boy Is Mine.” That includes videos from Rodrigo, who danced to the song backstage at her Guts World Tour, and Meg, who jammed out to the track while showing off a cute outfit.

To Xtina, who modeled a sparkly dress and glam makeup in a reel using “The Boy Is Mine,” Grande wrote on Instagram Stories “love you” alongside four teary-eyed emojis.

Described by Grande as a “bad girl anthem,” “The Boy Is Mine” is quickly becoming a favorite among fans on social media. At press time, it ranks No. 3 on Billboard‘s fan-voted poll for best song on Eternal Sunshine (after the Billboard Hot 100-topping “We Can’t Be Friends” and “Supernatural”).

Earlier this month, Hanni and her bandmates — Minji, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein — were crowned group of the year at Billboard’s 2024 Women in Music event. After accepting the award from presenter Lainey Wilson, Hanni told the crowd at YouTube Theater, “To be part of the music industry today is something we don’t take for granted, and it wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of help from people and all the support we received.”

It was officially Dre Day in Hollywood. The iconic superproducer was immortalized with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Spotted on TMZ, Dr. Dre has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week, and the three artists whose careers he was instrumental in shaping—Eminem, 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg—were on hand to celebrate the occasion.

On Tuesday, the producer/rapper/actor’s star was placed in the cement along with other actors and musicians during the ceremony.

Other notable names in attendance were Kurupt, his Beats partner Jimmy Iovine, and legendary radio personality Big Boy.

In a post on Instagram, Dr. Dre thanked his brothers for showing up and showing love, writing in the caption:

“I’d like to thank my brothers and all of Los Angeles for showing me love on March 19th to get my Hollywood Star.”

Dr. Dre Opens Up About His Health Issues

Dre getting his Walk of Fame honor comes after he opened up about his major health scare, revealing he suffered three strokes and a brain aneurysm during a recent interview with James Corden on SirusXM’s The Life of Mine With James Corden.

Per HHW’s previous reporting:

“I got up and I went on about my day, and I thought that I could just lay down and take a nap,” he explained. “My son had a female friend that was there and was like, ‘No, we need to take you to the hospital.’ So they took me to urgent care.”

Dr. Dre went on to detail how he suffered three strokes and nearly lost his life.

“Next thing you know, I’m blacking out. I’m in and out of consciousness, and I ended up in the ICU. I was there for two weeks. I’m hearing the doctors coming in and saying, ‘You don’t know how lucky you are.’”

When asked what caused his dire medical condition he pointed to high blood pressure.

“I had no idea that I had high blood pressure or anything like that because I’m on my health sh*t. I’m lifting weights, I’m running, I’m doing everything I can to keep myself healthy.” He went on to make it clear he has a new perspective on life saying it, “definitely makes you appreciate being alive, that’s for sure.”

Salute to Dr. Dre.

‘Vanderpump Rules’ Star Scheana Shay Hints at Having an Orgy With John Mayer

Scheana Shay is shedding light onto her alleged hookup with John Mayer.

In a new episode of Vanderpump Rules on Tuesday (March 19), the 38-year-old TV personality takes part in a game of Never Have I Ever with her castmates, ultimately revealing that she took part in an orgy. When asked by producers when it happened, Shay said that it was with an “A-list celebrity,” before hinting that it was John Mayer when she referenced his “Your Body Is a Wonderland” hit and added, “Once upon a time, my body was a wonderland. I’ll just say that.”

The star is now married to husband Brock Davies. Billboard has reached out to Mayer’s team, but has not heard back at the time of publication.

This is hardly the first time Shay has revealed her romantic past with the “Love on the Weekend” singer. On Amazon Live in 2023, she revealed she met Mayer in 2008 while waitressing at the famous members-only club, Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills. She claims he asked for her phone number, though he was dating Jennifer Aniston at the time, and she ended up getting fired for her job because of the incident.

She later claimed on the Flashbacks podcast in 2020 that she was in a throuple with Mayer The Hills alum Stacie Adams. “I was living with Stacie at the time. [We hung out] for about six months,” she said. “We would go to his house in Calabasas, or Hidden Hills, whatever it’s called. It just became, you know, kind of the three of us. We had a little throuple going on.”

Shay says she ended up leaving the relationship because of jealousy, as Mayer allegedly liked Adams more.  “I was like, ‘Wait, I brought you into this and now you’re getting more attention than I’m getting.’ And even after he and I stopped talking, they continued talking,” she said.

Ariana Grande Earns Sixth No. 1 on Streaming Songs Chart With ‘We Can’t Be Friends’

Ariana Grande snags the biggest streaming debut of 2024 with “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” which opened at No. 1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart dated March 23.

“We Can’t Be Friends” earned 32.6 million official U.S. streams in its first week (March 8-14), according to Luminate.

It exceeds the 29.2 million streams accumulated by Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss” in its first week (Feb. 10) to become the biggest debut week for a song in 2024. And it’s the biggest bow of any song since three songs from Drake’s 2023 album For All the Dogs started on the Oct. 21, 2023, survey: “First Person Shooter,” featuring J. Cole (42.2 million), “IDGAF,” featuring Yeat (40.8 million) and “Virginia Beach” (34.5 million).

The song also sports the second-biggest week for any non-holiday song this year, second only to “Carnival” by Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign. The Rich the Kid– and Playboi Carti-featuring song racked up 33.7 million streams toward the March 16 list, its fourth week on the tally and third at No. 1.

“We Can’t Be Friends” and “Carnival” are the only non-holiday songs to boast more than 30 million streams in a given week this year.

It’s Grande’s sixth No. 1 on Streaming Songs, a chart that began in 2013. That ties her with Justin Bieber for the third-most rulers in the list’s history; Drake leads all acts with 20 reigns.

Most No. 1s, Streaming Songs
20, Drake
8, Taylor Swift
6, Ariana Grande
6, Justin Bieber
5, Travis Scott
4, Beyonce
4, Cardi B
4, Kanye West
4, Lil Baby
4, Megan Thee Stallion

She first crowned the ranking with “Thank U, Next,” a seven-week leader beginning in November 2018. Prior to “We Can’t Be Friends,” she had last led via “Yes, And?,” for a week this January.

Both “We Can’t Be Friends” and “Yes, And?” are songs from Eternal Sunshine, Grande’s seventh studio album, which concurrently debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 227,000 equivalent album units earned, as previously reported. All 12 chart-eligible songs from the LP appear on Streaming Songs, including four of the top 10; the No. 1 track is followed by “The Boy Is Mine” (No. 7, 17.6 million streams), “Yes, And?” (No. 8, 17.3 million streams) and “Supernatural” (No. 9, 16.4 million streams).

As previously reported, “We Can’t Be Friends” also starts at No. 1 on the multi-metric Billboard Hot 100.

Here’s Why Beyoncé’s Limited Edition ‘Cowboy Carter’ Cover Features the Name ‘Beyincé’

Hold your horses! Beyoncé has just unveiled an exclusive limited edition album cover for her forthcoming Cowboy Carter LP, just one day after debuting the album’s eye-popping standard artwork.

On Wednesday, the 32-time Grammy winner took to her official Instagram page to share the alternate Cowboy Carter artwork — which is exclusively available for purchase through her official online webstore.

For the new cover, Beyoncé strikes a statuesque pose on a small, gray platform as she stands completely nude with nothing but a pageant sash covering her body. Her hair is braided up with red, white, and beige beads, while the completely black background echoes the artwork for the rodeo queen-nodding standard cover and the artwork for 2022’s Renaissance album.

Trending on Billboard

Yesterday (March 19), Queen Bey revealed the standard cover for Cowboy Carter, which features the singer perched backwards on a white horse mid-gallop as she raises a cropped American flag and dons red, white and blue chaps and a pageant sash that reads the album’s title.

The fact that the pageant sash is a recurring motif on both Cowboy Carter album covers was not lost on eagle-eyed fans — especially because of the name printed on the sash for the limited edition cover. Instead of “Cowboy Carter,” that sash reads “Beyincé,” a variant spelling of Tina Knowles‘ maiden name. While some social media commentators were left feeling perplexed at the name, Knowles has spoken at length about the history of her family’s name, most recently during her appearance on Heather Thomson’s In My Heart podcast in 2020.

“A lot of people don’t know that Beyoncé is my last name. It’s my maiden name,” she told Thomson. “My name was Celestine Beyoncé, which at that time was not a cool thing to have that weird name.”

According to Knowles, a businesswoman and fashion designer in her own right, she is one of a handful of people in her family with that spelling of “Beyoncé” due to a clerical error on several of their birth certificates. Her brother and his children, including award-winning songwriter Angie Beyincé, spell their surname with an “I” instead of an “O.”

“I think me and my brother Skip were the only two that had B-E-Y-O-N-C-E,” she continue. “Because we asked my mother when I was grown, I was like, ‘Why is my brother’s name spelled B-E-Y-I-N-C-E? You know, it’s all these different spellings.’ And my mom’s reply to me was, like, ‘That’s what they put on your birth certificate.’” Knowles went on to reflect on asking her mother to demand a correction, but the reality of the times were that “Black people didn’t get birth certificates.”

The new Cowboy Carter album cover brings Beyoncé’s devotion to her family’s legacy — which she sings of in Billboard Hot 100 hit “16 Carriages” (No. 38) — full circle. Now, both her married name (Carter, by way of husband Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter) and her mother’s maiden name are represented in the artwork for her upcoming album.

This isn’t the first time Beyoncé has incorporated her family names in her ventures. In 2006, she and her mother started House of Deréon, a clothing line whose name was derived from her maternal grandmother’s maiden name. Seven years later, she mounted the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour in support of her Billboard 200-topping 4 and self-titled LPs, and in 2016, she launched Ivy Park, an athleisure clothing line whose name is partially inspired by her daughter’s, Blue Ivy Carter.

In addition to sharing the new Cowboy Carter album cover, Beyoncé also shared some snaps from her and Jay-Z’s exclusive annual Gold Party in celebration of the Oscars. Among the photos were a regal shot of her mother, an adorable picture of the “Crazy In Love” power couple snuggling with one and another and several gorgeous flicks showcasing yet another Western-inspired outfit from Queen Bey.

Cowboy Carter —which features “16 Carriages” and the historic Hot Country Songs chart-topper “Texas Hold ‘Em” — hits digital streaming platforms on March 29.
