The agreement comes on the heels of Primera — who started his career alongside his brother in the 90s kids salsa group Salserín — appearing onstage at the Monumental Simón Bolívar de La Rinconada Stadium with Karol G on March 22. The Colombian star brought out the siblings as surprise guests during her stadium show in Caracas, Venezuela where they performed “De Sol a Sol.” Primera is also working on his upcoming new album.

“Writing songs has become one of the most fulfilling things in my life,” Primera said in a statement. “To be able to do it in company of some of the biggest names in salsa music, with some of the greatest to ever do it, is a dream come true. I’m honored to officially become a part of their family.”

Trending on Billboard

After branching out from Salserín, the brothers formed the duo that achieved six entries on Hot Latin Songs, including their No. 1 hit “Una Fan Enamorada” in 1998, part of their debut album Los Primera.

After a successful run in the 90s, the duo had a comeback in 2021 with two streaming concerts that marked their return to music. That year, they also released “Los Cachos” with Guaynaa. Meanwhile, Florentino also has songwriting credits in Marc Anthony’s “El Que Te Amaba,” part of his Grammy-winning album Pa’lla Voy.

“We are thrilled to welcome Florentino to the peermusic family and to represent his works as part of the iconic duo Servando y Florentino including the new music that is to come, as well as a performer on part of the peermusic Neighboring Rights family,” said Julio Bagué, vice president Latin division east coast and Puerto Rico at peermusic. “We are so impressed with his trajectory as both a songwriter and performer, and his commitment to the Latin music genre. Everyone at peermusic is beyond honored that he has chosen us to represent him.”

According to a press release, the deal was negotiated by Matthew Limones, founder of Prediction Enterprises, a rights management and business development firm, and and Nicolas Gonzalez, the company’s chief operations officer.

“This is exactly what I envisioned for a star client of ours. To find a home that we know understands his trajectory and can help guide him into the next chapter of his iconic career,” Limones noted. Gonzalez added, “We are so happy for Florentino and his future success at Peer. We know he will continue to make an impact in the genre with a great team.”

IMPALA Stands With UMG on TikTok ‘Value Gap’ and Flags ‘Unintended Consequences’ With Streaming Changes

Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA) has released a statement detailing its position on TikTok and the proposed changes to the payment models for music streaming, and how this will affect its members. Founded in 2000, the advocacy group has 6000 members, stemming from Europe’s small music businesses.

With regards to TikTok, the organization says it is aligned with Universal Music Group and its decision to let its license with TikTok lapse due to low compensation and AI concerns. “IMPALA supports UMG’s stance on TikTok in relation to valuing music properly,” say the organization’s chair of streaming group and CEO of Everlasting Records and Popstock Distribuciones, Mark Kitcatt. “The independent community has adopted a similar approach at various points over the years with other services, from MTV to Apple to YouTube. We also reject arguments equating the use of music on TikTok to promotion.”

IMPALA’s stance on TikTok’s lack of policing for AI generated content is also similar to what UMG addressed in its letter to artists and writers when it announced its plan to leave the platform. “services need permission for the use of music, including soundalikes and AI adaptations. The new AI framework in Europe also helps set human-centred guide rails in this regard,” says Helen Smith, executive director of IMPALA.

Trending on Billboard

IMPALA also notes that it has concerns with how some streaming services — including Spotify, Deezer and Apple — are changing their payments models to artists and labels. “Adjustments can be made [by Deezer, Spotify and Apple] to avoid harm,” says the organization. IMPALA calls for a better seat at the table for smaller music companies. “Any changes in how revenue is allocated [should] be properly assessed by services in terms of the impact they create over the whole market… We also call on streaming services to consult and discuss this with their independent licensing partners before the decision is made.”

Detractors of Deezer and Spotify’s new royalty payment models say that adding a threshold for a minimum number of streams that an artist has to reach before qualifying for payment is unfair to smaller artists and companies that represent them. Also, streaming companies are considering or are already adding in penalties for music companies that facilitate music involved in streaming manipulation and fraud. For distributors that services a large scale of DIY talent in particular, this could have an outsized impact on their businesses,

To get ahead of these problems, some distributors have joined together to form the Music Fights Fraud coalition, including TuneCore, Distrokid, and CD Baby, to come up with best practices for fighting bad actors that sign up for their platforms and to establish a common database to share information on the fraudsters each service catches. IMPALA says it supports Music Fights Fraud and that addressing maniplation is a “priority” for the organization and its members.

Chair of IMPALA and head of Balkans association RUNDA, Dario Drastata, adds: “IMPALA supports collaborative reform that is sustainable and drives diversity. We seek urgent solutions to address manipulation and revenue dilution. We also need to make sure the proposals are fair to all, and we hope Merlin’s recent agreement with Deezer will contribute to this objective. It’s the only way to create a sustainable ecosystem. We believe for example that there are simple solutions for problems with thresholds that can be plugged in and will continue our constructive discussions with services to explore options. Finding the answers will ensure services are able to further develop opportunities in key markets and genres as well as across multiple languages.”

Helen Smith says, “IMPALA’s work is vital for Europe’s music economy. Independents account for over 80% of the sectors’ new releases and jobs, providing stable and exciting opportunities for artists, fans and music employees across Europe. This was also reconfirmed at IMPALA’s AGM last year, including the elimination of value gaps, and developing the digital market in all territories with great talent, huge audiences and untapped digital potential, such as in Central and Eastern Europe. “

Chayce Beckham on His Chart-Topping ’23’ & How His Story-Expanding New Album Highlights ‘The Things I Love in Country Music’

In 2021, California native Chayce Beckham joined the lineage of artists whose talent captured viewers’ ears and hearts during his winning run on American Idol. But the narrow passageway from talent competition to bonafide star is littered with artists who never successfully made that transition.

Beckham is not among them — thanks to “23,” his newly minted, first Billboard Country AirplayNo. 1 hit, which reached the chart pinnacle this past week (on the chart dated April 6). In the process, he joins an elite class of Idol winners to earn a Country Airplay No. 1, including Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery and Kelly Clarkson. Moreover, “23” was solo-written by Beckham; the song has become only the sixth song crafted a solo writer to hit No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart in the past decade — and in the process, stakes his claim as not only a song interpreter, but an artist intent on telling his story in his own way.

“I’ve been working this song for a long time and it’s had a new life at radio,” he tells Billboard of “23.” “Just watching it open up to a whole new audience over the past year has been special.”

Trending on Billboard

On Friday (April 5), he will build on his success with the release of his debut album, Bad for Me, via 19 Recordings/Wheelhouse Records/BMG.

“Over the last few years, I feel like just kind of put my head down and just kept trucking and put as much hard work into this as I could,” Beckham told Billboard. “I just wanted to create a record that I felt highlighted all the things I love in country music, like fiddles, guitars, mandolins, harmonies and storytelling.”

He co-wrote nine of the album’s 13 songs, with three of those nine compositions being solo writes. Many of the songs on the project, including the title track, as well as “Devil I’ve Been” and “Addicted and Clean” offer unflinching honesty, drawing from his own struggles just weeks prior to his American Idol audition. Those hardships included his grandfather’s death, his girlfriend ending the relationship, and the bustup of a former band during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Beckham coped through heavy alcohol use, which led to a DUI and a near-fatal car accident in 2020.

During his recovery, his mother encouraged him to try out for American Idol. A song on his new album, “Mama,” which he wrote back in 2021 and performed on Idol, is a musical mea culpa and apology that faces his story directly on lines such as “All the pain you’ve felt, I hope you never have to feel it again/ And the night that you picked me up from jail and I swore I’d never do it again.”

“Songs like ‘Mama’ and “Drink You Off My Mind,” those were all written around the same time and come from a personal place,” Beckham said. “Writing is always therapeutic, and when you’re done writing a good song, or one you like, it feels so good to get it off your chest. This album is so special to me because I feel like it has that emotional connection with me, regardless if a song is a hit record or not.”

That Idol audition proved life-changing. Now, Beckham is signed to KP Entertainment, the same management company that guides the career of American Idol judge and country hitmaker Luke Bryan; Beckham, who is repped by UTA for booking, is currently headlining his own slate of shows and will join Luke Bryan’s Mind of a Country Boy Tour this summer.

Beckham, Billboard’s April Rookie of the Month, discusses his new album below, as well as his experiences being a co-writer and the rock band that inspires him.

Several songs on this album, including “Devil I’ve Been” and “Addicted and Clean” touch on trying to move on from past decisions that had poor consequences. Why was it important to include that here?

I had a lot of things I wanted to say, and I think I had a hard time trying to find the words to say that just in conversation, but I was able to communicate a lot of my feelings through these songs and through music. Once my life goes in a different direction — maybe becoming a dad or a husband and stuff like that, I might start singing about that stuff, too. But I think that just right now I’m still very much so in the phase of remembering the last 10 years and writing songs about it.

Throughout the album, you have several writers whose names appear several times, such as Andy Albert, John Pierce and Lindsay Rimes. What was it like finding a group of writers who are helping you tell your stories?

There are people who, whenever I moved to town, really took the time to get to know me and understand the kind of music I wanted to make. We were able to keep coming back into writing rooms and finding successful songs. Those were the guys who wrote most of this record with me, and I couldn’t have done it without them. But also, when I first got to Nashville, I figured I’d just write everything and had never thought of cutting other people’s songs. But once I got involved in the songwriting community, it was something I wanted to support and be part of.

“Waylon in ‘75” is one of only four tracks on the album you didn’t write. What stood out about it?

Yeah, that’s a song that as soon as I heard it, it definitely, it made me turn my head. The first line just pulled me in and the title, before I even heard the song. I got lucky with it and I jumped on that one pretty quick. We went in the studio and tried our best to do our thing on it, and I love the way that that one came out. I think it sets the tone really well.

What are some of your favorite Waylon songs?

“Lonesome, On’ry and Mean” is a good one, but also “Good Hearted Woman” with Willie [Nelson] … I’ve always been hugely inspired by the outlaw scene. And even before that, Johnny Cash, before the Outlaw music, was one of my biggest inspirations. So just paying homage to those guys who really drew me into country music when I was a young kid.

Producer Bart Butler produced nearly every song on the album. What made you want to work with him on this project?

He’s done a lot of stuff that I admire, and I think that was a great starting point — a lot of the Jon Pardi stuff. We were on the same page from the get-go — we knew the direction we were trying to go with the record.

Who are some artists you would you like to collaborate with?

There are so many people that are just killing it. I’ve always wanted to work with Lainey Wilson or Chris Stapleton. I’m also a fan of guys like Zach Top who are coming up right now. I’ve talked with my buddy Elvie Shane about doing something, and Drake Milligan. There are a lot of people going down this really country route who are making great music.

What has it been like performing some of the newer songs with your band and introducing them to your audience?

Our last three, four shows, we’ve been playing a completely new set. We play most of the record, and it’s been cool just seeing the crowd reactions.

What are some of your favorite records that have inspired you?

One of my favorite groups ever is The Doors, and their [1967] self-titled album is phenomenal. When you listen to it, there is a point where you can tell they were in the studio all day trying to make the album and they got to a point where it was like, ‘That’s the best it’s going to get. Let’s move on to the next song.’ Because you can hear there’s a little whiff, there’s a little slip in a guitar solo, or Jim [Morrison], his voice might’ve cracked, or the drums were slightly off or something, but they just left it there.

There was something about those songs that made me fall in love with those records, because it felt human. These incredible musicians that I look up to, even those guys are subject to making mistakes. I feel like that inspired me to make the music I make, music that feels honest and isn’t so picture perfect.

She Diddy Trends After Woman Cosigns Sexual Assault & Homophobia In 2-For-1 Tweet

Great App. Amazed young black man looking at smartphone screen with excitement

If social media has taught us anything in the last decade and more, it’s that there are a lot of creeps and weirdos out here on all sides. A woman on X had to protect her account after essentially cosigning sexual assault and homophobia in a two-for-one tweet, prompting others to call her She Diddy.

She Diddy began trending early Thursday (April 4) morning after X user @themdolll tweeted some thoughts that somehow got connected to some other recent happenings involving Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The tweet, which X user @ScamFisher screengrabbed, reads as follows:

once i reach fa that dic & you move my hand u can get tf on gay ass ngga

X user @FirstName_Alan quoted @themdolll’s tweet, writing in the quotes, “It’s called consent She Diddy” and all hell broke loose from there.

Since that exchange, She Diddy has gone viral, seeing Combs’ nickname repurposed once again in an unfortunate fashion. In recent times, the phrase “No Diddy” has cropped up which seemingly has a homophobic bent although it appears it isn’t dominating the conversations of late.

As it stands, fans and onlookers are more aware than ever of the specter of sexual assault in the wake of Diddy’s recent legal issues. Further, it’s revealed that some people have some zany views about consent, assault, sexuality, and conduct. Adding to this, Diddy has his fair share of defenders along with those who wish to see his downfall in connection to the mounting allegations he faces.

Perhaps not wanting that image on her jacket, @themdolll has since made her X page private so we don’t know if there have been any other statements or responses to her earlier quip.

Check out the reactions under the X trending topic She Diddy below.

Beyoncé Drops ‘Pony Up’ Remix of ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ With New Verse, Breakdown

Beyoncé is rustling up all her cowboys and kindly asking them to hit the dancefloor for a new remix of her Cowboy Carter single “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The track gets a fresh bounce as well as a new verse and breakdown in a “Pony Up” remix of the song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs chart when it dropped in February.

In addition to the new lyrics, the song has some new vocals, cracking drums and new samples, as well as a breakdown in which Bey calls “all my cowboys to the dancefloor,” then making her request more urgent with a call to “Get on the dancefloor!”

The new second verse cranks up the righteous cowboy action with the lines, “Woke up this mornin’, my heart keeps racin’/ Straight to the bottom, we all need salvation (Come take it to the floor now, ooh)/ Need you to in this drought, take me downtown/ Gon leave the truck, whiskey, baby/ Let’s get weekend wasted/ Might as well just throw it all (Woo-woo)/ And pony up, b–ch, don’t hold back on me.”

The song ends with a new outro as well, on which Bey sings, “Pony up and salute your town/ Chasin’ our sins away, way brown/ And I’ll be damned if I cannot dance with you/ Baby, pour that sugar and liquor on me, too/ Furs, spurs, boots.”

In addition to the remix, the singer also launched a mysterious new website this week, beencountry.com, which at press time featured an image of a teen Bey singing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, as well as a childhood pic of the singer, a contemporary shot of her in her full cowboy regalia — including furry chaps — a picture of a banjo and the reminder that “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.” Some Beyhive members noted that posters with the beencountry images have gone up around Los Angeles, speculating that they could be a tease for an as-yet-unannounced Cowboy Carter tour.

The message came with a throwback photo of the trio as young men. The Atlanta trio formed in 2008 has had a rocky few years, beginning in 2022, when Offset appeared to suggest there was conflict in the group on his song “Messy,” releasing a video for the track one day after his cousin, Takeoff, was killed in a shooting at a bowling alley in Houston; the track was credited to the pair’s side project, Unc & Phew, whose only album was Only Built For Infinity Links.

Shortly after, the pair reportedly got into a scuffle backstage at the 65th annual Grammy Awards, which Offset denied in a post. “What tf look like fighting my brother yal n—as is crazy,” Offset tweeted at the time without naming names. At the time, according to TMZ, the Migos bandmates allegedly squared off backstage because Quavo reportedly blocked Offset from performing onstage with him for “Without You,” the former’s tribute song to Takeoff.

Migos’ most recent album was 2021’s Culture and in an Oct. 2023 interview with Hot 97, Offset appeared to confirm that the group had broken up, saying that it was not due to any issues with Quavo, but because of the death of the “glue” that held them together, Takeoff.
