Riches in Niches: As the Music Business Nears Peak Streaming, Where Will Growth Come From Next?

It’s all about the artist, music executives say (and say and say). If you really look at the industry over time, though, it’s really all about the formats — the health of the business may have more to do with how people listen to music than what they actually listen to. For the last decade, that has been on-demand streaming, and the music business has boomed — from total revenue of $6.7 billion in 2014 to $17.1 billion last year, according to the late-March RIAA report. In inflation-adjusted dollars, the industry is worth almost double what it was at the beginning of the streaming boom. Internationally, the story is broadly similar — the business was worth $13 billion in 2014 and $28.6 billion last year, according to IFPI statistics.

In the U.S., at least, growth is slowing — revenue rose from $15.9 billion to $17.1 billion last year, and it hasn’t grown much in the last two years, accounting for inflation. The reason is simple: There are only so many streaming subscriptions to sell, and the U.S. now has a 12-month average of 96.8 million on-demand subscriptions in a country of 127 million households. It’s hard to know when we’ll reach Peak Subscription — 105 million in a year? 110 million in two? — but slower growth in the number of subscribers seems inevitable. This is one reason record companies are cutting back. It’s the end of hypergrowth for creators and rightsholders — at least in some places.

Trending on Billboard

Those places also include most of Europe, where the recorded music business grew 8.9%, according to the IFPI’s 2024 Global Music Report, compared with 7.4% in the U.S. and Canada. In the developing world, where the music business is much smaller, the figures tell a very different story: Asia was up 14.9%, with much of that growth coming from China, which was up 25.9%; Latin America grew for the 14th consecutive year, by 19.4%; and revenue from sub-Saharan Africa rose 24.7%. These increases are taking place in smaller businesses, but they mean that there’s plenty of room for growth — it’s just moving south and east.

We’ve all heard the simple and optimistic version of what comes next: Just wait until everyone in China, India and Brazil subscribes to a streaming service! (I hope they subscribe to Billboard Pro while they’re at it.) But this assumes a world where the global middle class continues to grow, trade and prosperity continue to expand, and developing economies stay relatively stable. Alas, as the small print says, past performance is not indicative of future results. Over the past two years, Russia has gone from a developing market into a geopolitical adversary, and tensions between the U.S. and China are heating up. (Whatever you think of globalization, it will be far worse in reverse.) If the U.S. forces a sale of TikTok, could China retaliate by imposing limits on American music? Could inflation in Latin America hurt consumer purchasing power in a way that stifles a streaming business that still depends more on advertising? Whatever happens is beyond the control of the music business. The potential is incredible — it’s just not reliable.

The truth is that there’s still plenty of opportunity in developed markets, including plenty of room to raise streaming subscription prices, but creators and rightsholders don’t have to just sit around and wait for that. Other opportunities are emerging, and growth could be fueled by licensing music for AI training, as well as for social media, video games, and the next iteration of the technology formerly known as the Metaverse.

Some of the most exciting opportunities might come from a traditional business model: Selling stuff. Yes, I know, it’s all so unbearably dreary compared to the “Free” future we were told to expect. But consider that, adjusted for inflation, the U.S. recorded music market is still only two-thirds the size of its 1999 peak. Back then — how old does that sound? — much of that revenue came from serious fans who bought a couple of albums a month instead of a couple of albums a year, mostly for more than the cost of a monthly streaming subscription today. Such dedication explains the fantastic growth in the vinyl market, which rose from $243.8 million in 2014 to $1.4 billion last year — almost a sixth the size of the music business of a decade ago in 2023 dollars. (I am proud to say that I have done my part.)

Sure, vinyl growth is slowing, too — the format isn’t for everyone and I am running out of shelf space myself, but consumers have demonstrated a willingness to spend more on their favorite artists, which is why music executives are so excited about superfans, which could be the most exciting opportunity available. The last decade of the music business was about making a hundred dollars a year from millions of people. The next 10 years will be about making millions — OK, probably thousands, but you get the idea — from hundreds of people. That won’t be easy, though. The music industry has always been, pardon the pun, a volume business. Making money from superfans requires finding that, figuring out what they want to buy, and marketing that, presumably online, better than live promoters or dedicated startups.

This could also solve one of the biggest problems with the recorded music business: it’s not making stars fast enough, and the new ones it has don’t shine for so many people. But what is a big problem in the hit-driven streaming business doesn’t matter so much when it comes to monetizing superfans — older acts still do big business, and there are riches in niches. From a financial perspective, K-pop is essentially a high-margin merchandise business focused on an audience that’s dedicated but not quite mainstream. And if labels are going to keep growing in the U.S. and Europe, at least some of their business might look a lot like that.

Kenneth Petty Goes Viral Over Updated Sex Offender Registry Photo

Kenneth Petty, Nicki Minaj’s husband, has gone viral after updating his photo on the sex offender registry recently.

The web was buzzing as Kenneth Petty, the husband of rap superstar Nicki Minaj, recently updated his photograph on the state of California’s website of registered sex offenders. The updated photo was a necessity as Petty’s sentence of house arrest ended. The Megan’s Law website operated by the state of California has Petty’s status as an offender as well as personal data including his age and date of birth along with the reason for his previous conviction and aliases. Petty recently served a period of house arrest for threatening Offset.

Petty’s status comes as a result of being found guilty in an attempted first-degree rape of a 16-year-old girl, which occurred in 1995. He was sentenced to four years in jail. He ran afoul of the law in 2019 after moving to California with Nicki Minaj before their marriage. For that offense, he was sentenced to three years of probation and a year of house arrest for failing to notify the state of his status when he arrived, which was discovered after he was pulled over at a traffic stop. He also had to shell out $20,000 in fines.

Nicki Minaj has been on record defending her husband, claiming that he was wrongfully accused and going so far as to say that the alleged victim was willing to walk back her claims. “When the alleged accuser wrote a letter to the judge asking to recant the statements she was told that she would go to jail for 90 days, allegedly, if she recants the statement,” she said on her Queen Radio show hosted by Apple Music.

Petty’s status fueled a scorching set of bars by Megan Thee Stallion in her song “Hiss” earlier this year. “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoes mad at Megan’s Law/ I don’t really know what the problem is, but I guarantee y’all don’t want me to start,” she rapped, initiating a serious beef with Nicki Minaj by referencing the legislation documenting all sex offenders and named after Megan Kanka, who was killed in 1994 by a previous offender. In addition, a former security guard reportedly won a default judgment last month against Petty and Nicki Minaj after accusing them of assaulting him backstage with the couple potentially owing the man $500,000.

The J Balvin x Air Jordan 3 was one of the most hyped releases of 2023 and now the black version of the sneakers and best believe these will not be an easy copp.

According to Sneakernews, the J Balvin x Air Jordan 3 “Rio” is set to release this May 22 and with the sneaker already getting all kinds of hype thanks to DJ Khaled forcing his security to carry him so he wouldn’t dirty his exclusive pair, you can expect to have a hard time coming by a pair for retail. Having made their debut on J Balvin’s feet himself not too long after the first cream colored pair released in September of 2023, sneakerheads were wondering if the black version would ever see the light of day with a general release.

Well, those prayers have been answered and heads will have an opportunity to copp what’s sure to be one of the most hyped drops of 2024.

Per Sneakernews:

Last September, J Balvin released what is undoubtedly his best project with Jordan Brand to date — the Air Jordan 3 inspired by the picturesque sunsets in his hometown of Medellín. As a follow-up to this applause-worthy collaboration, he’s teaming up with the Jumpman for a variation of the design inspired by his unbreakable bond with his son.

In fact, Balvin was so eager to show the public his upcoming release that he was spotted in them in New York City way back in Fall of last year. It wasn’t until an Instagram post from the Colombian superstar weeks later that revealed the true nature of the design; although primarily black in its color, the J Balvin Jordan 3 “Rio” is inspired by the light given to him by his son.

As of now the sneakers are set to drop on May 22nd for a cool $250, but don’t be surprised if Nike pushes that date back as they’re notorious for switching up release dates on hype sneakers.

Check out pics of the J Balvin x Air Jordan 3 “Rio”‘s and let us know if you’ll be trying your luck when these drop next month.

10 First-Timers on Billboard’s Charts This Week: ILLIT, Love Fame Tragedy, Mark Ambor & More

Billboard has more than 200 different weekly charts, encompassing numerous genres and formats.

Here’s a look at 10 artists who appear on surveys for the first time on the April 6, 2024-dated charts.

ILLIT

The South Korean group makes its first showing on Billboard’s charts with its debut four-track EP Super Real Me and single “Magnetic.” The set, released March 25 on BELIFT LAB (a sublabel of HYBE Corporation), debuts at No. 10 on the World Albums chart and No. 15 on Heatseekers Albums with 4,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending March 28, according to Luminate.

The EP’s breakout single “Magnetic” also arrives at No. 33 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and No. 63 on the Billboard Global 200; it drew 21.7 million official streams worldwide. TikTok has been a contributing factor in the song’s growth, as a portion of it has soundtracked over 170,000 clips on the platform, where the group boasts 1.4 million followers. The song is expected to vault further on next week’s, April 13-dated charts.

ILLIT was formed through the Korean JTBC reality show R U Next? and comprises members Iroha, Minju, Moka, Wonhee and Yunah.

Love Fame Tragedy

Love Fame Tragedy nets its first entry on Billboard’s charts, as “Don’t You Want To Sleep With Someone Normal?” debuts at No. 39 on Alternative Airplay (up 24% in plays).

The act is a solo side project of Wombats frontman Matthew Murphy. The band, from Liverpool, has maintained a steady presence on Billboard’s charts since 2008, with five charting songs on Alternative Airplay and two charting albums (of its five total) on the Billboard 200: Glitterbug (No. 91 peak in 2015) and Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life (No. 190, 2018).

“Normal?” is from Love Fame Tragedy’s second album, Life Is a Killer, released March 29 on Bright Antenna Records. The band released its first collection, Wherever I Go, I Want To Leave, in 2020.

Mark Ambor

Mark Ambor is officially a Billboard-charting hitmaker, thanks to his breakthrough viral song “Belong Together.” Released Feb. 16, the song debuts at No. 167 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart with 8.2 million streams earned outside the U.S. The song also starts at No. 88 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.

Before releasing the song, Ambor had been teasing it for weeks on TikTok, where two versions have gone viral. Its original audio has soundtracked over 20,000 clips, while a sped-up mix has been used in over 120,000 videos. Ambor himself boasts nearly a million followers on the platform.

Ambor released his debut seven-track album Hello World in 2022, followed by other songs, including another viral hit, “Good To Be” (118,000 clips on TikTok). Ambor has a run of European tour stops lined up in April.

Yahir Saldivar

The Mexican singer is now a Billboard-charting artist, thanks to his breakthrough viral hit “SC-9.” The song, released Feb. 1 on Cash On Beat/H.D.P., debuted at No. 45 on the March 23-dated Hot Latin Songs chart and holds at its No. 23 high on the latest list with 3.7 million U.S. streams (a 14% gain from the previous week). The song also stands at No. 4 on Latin Digital Song Sales after reaching No. 1 a week earlier, where it became Saldivar’s first career Billboard leader. Plus, Saldivar ranks at No. 38 on the Emerging Artists chart.

The recent gains for “SC-9” can partly be attributed to TikTok, where Saldivar boasts over 500,000 followers. The song has been used in over 50,000 videos on the platform.

Loe Shimmy

The emerging rapper, from Pompano Beach, Fla., reaches Billboard’s charts for the first time thanks to his new album, Zombieland 2. Released March 22 on NETL/Open Shift Records, the set debuts at No. 13 on Heatseekers Albums (which ranks the most popular albums each week by new or developing acts) with 4,000 equivalent album units earned. It features collaborations with fellow Billboard-charting artists Luh Tyler and Veeze, plus rappers BLP Kosher and ffawty.

Loe Shimmy has been releasing music on streaming services since 2020. Since then, he’s dropped two additional full-lengths – Zuper PowerZ in 2021 and Z end in 2022 – along with his EPs Zombie Land and World WAR Z (both in 2020). He has also released songs with Kodak Black, Bossman Dlow and Danny Towers, among others.

Ahadadream & Priya Ragu

Both artists land their first Billboard chart hits, thanks to their new collaboration with Skrillex, “TAKA.” Released March 22 via Major Recordings/FFRR, the track debuts at No. 37 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with 512,000 U.S. streams.

British-Pakistani electronic/house DJ Ahadadream (real name Ahad Elley) has been releasing music for nearly a decade, including four EPs: Movements, Shade, 3:33 and Homecoming. Outside of Skrillex, he has also collaborated with Ellie Goulding, ELIZA, and Tommy Genesis. “TAKA” initially rose to prominence last September, when he previewed the track during his debut Boiler Room set (alongside Skrillex). He has a run of North American and European tour dates lined up through August, including a set at The Do Lab stage at Coachella this month.

Priya Ragu released her debut studio album Santhosam, on Warner Records U.K., following the mixtape damnshestamil in 2021 (also via Warner U.K.) The Tamil-Swiss singer-songwriter, who has also released music with Jungle and Oddisee, has a string of European and Australian tour dates scheduled through May.

As for Skrillex, “Taka” earns the EDM star his 61st entry on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, tying The Chainsmokers for the fourth-most in the chart’s decade-long-plus history, after David Guetta (86), Marshmello (68) and Kygo (63).

Keith Nieto

The Mexican singer-songwriter has already appeared on Billboard’s charts as saxophonist for the group La Maquinaria Norteña, but he earns his first career entry as a soloist with “Contigo Sí.” The song, on Azteca Records/Fonovisa/UMLE, debuts at No. 35 on Regional Mexican Airplay, with a 110% gain in radio audience impressions. The song is on Nieto’s debut solo six-track EP Saxy, released Feb. 28.

La Maquinaria Norteña has charted 32 songs on Regional Mexican Airplay, including 14 top 10s and three No. 1s: “50 y Cincuenta” (in 2022), “Eres Ese Algo” and “Te Quiero Ver” (both 2023). The group has also logged 10 albums on Top Latin Albums, including three No. 1s: El Fenomeno (2014), Ya Dime Adios (2015) and Generacion Maquinaria Est. 2006 (2016). Nieto, who has written and produced many of the band’s hits, is joined in the group by his brothers Tony and Rory Nieto, as well as Iván Gutiérrez and Sergio Soto.

Rosemarie

The R&B singer-songwriter claims her first Billboard chart hit, thanks to her collaboration with Roddy Ricch, “Is it Real?” Released in November on her 12-track project Rock Paper Scissors: Recut (via Bird Vision/Interscope Records), the song opens at No. 39 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with a 4% gain in spins at the format.

Rosemarie released her debut full-length TBD: To Be Determined in 2019 and dropped her nine-track set Sinnergy in 2021. Outside of Roddy Ricch, she has collaborated with Juvenile and Kalan.FrFr.

ÁSDÍS

The Icelandic singer hits Billboard’s charts for the first time thanks to her featured appearance on Seven Lions and Illenium’s “Not Even Love.” Released March 22 on Casablanca/Republic, the track debuts at No. 14 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with 1 million U.S. streams.

ÁSDÍS, based in Berlin, has been releasing music since 2020. She has collaborated with fellow Icelandic singer Daði Freyr on “Feel the Love,” and co-wrote Sophie Simmons’ 2021 release “Love Turns Lonely” (which deadmau5 produced).

Here’s Why Playboi Carti’s Scene in Camila Cabello’s ‘I Luv It’ Music Video Almost Didn’t Happen

Fans are luv-ing Playboi Carti’s gas station scene in collaborator Camila Cabello’s “I Luv It” music video, but it almost didn’t happen.

Cabello sat down for an interview with Power 106 Los Angeles’ Brown Bag Mornings crew, where she revealed that “something happened with [Carti’s] plane,” which nearly caused him to miss the Nicolas Mendez-directed video shoot entirely. “He got there after the music video was actually wrapped, so we had to find a place to film his part of the video and we ended up paying the guy that worked at the gas station to let it stay open for us,” the singer recalled. “He got there and my mom had the video screen and she was low-key directing, and he was like, ‘Your mom has the iPad screen, that’s so hard.’ He was so sweet, my mom was, like, in love with him.”

Prior to its release last month, Cabello had been teasing snippets of “I Luv It,” which samples Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade” and finds her interpolating Rihanna. She also reflected on exploring the rare human connection she has to select individuals, which makes her feel like she’s in “outer space,” while realizing that pace isn’t sustainable and she’ll eventually get burned out. “Certain things in our human realm do make me feel like I’m in outer space, and the very rare few times where I’ve had incredible chemistry with someone is one of them,” she previously said in a statement about the track’s inspiration. “Part of that cocktail is also the emotional drama between you and that person, and the chaos and butterflies and nerves and passion. It’s unsustainable and not peaceful and exhausting, but also, I LUV IT.”

Halsey & Avan Jogia Make Their Red Carpet Debut as a Couple: See Photo

Halsey and Avan Jogia made their red carpet debut Tuesday night, turning heads in matching outfits at the premiere of Dev Patel’s Monkey Man.

The “Closer” singer looked stunning in a creamy champagne-hued cocktail dress, her black hair slicked back and tattoos on display. The Victorious alum sported a button-up that was the same shade as his counterpart’s gown, complemented with a black pin-stripe suit.

The outing comes about seven months after the couple was first spotted together, packing on the PDA at the Cara Hotel in Los Angeles. It was a moment that sent the internet into an immediate tailspin.

In October, Halsey and Jogia made their relationship Instagram official, with the About-Face Beauty founder sharing snaps with the actor showing off their glamorous, leathery looks. Later that month, they celebrated Halloween as a couple, with the singer going as a sea monstress and the Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City star dressing up as a sailor.

Prior to dating Jogia, Halsey split from her estranged husband Alev Aydin — with whom she shares a young son named Ender — in April 2023. Jogia was previously linked to Australian actress Cleopatra Coleman.

“FTCU” debuted at No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December before surging up the chart to reach a peak of No. 15. The Waka Flocka Flame-sampling track is one of two Pink Friday 2 songs still on the Hot 100 where it currently sits at No. 82.

Dua Lipa Announces New Single ‘Illusion’ & Shares Snippet Ahead of ‘Radical Optimism’: Listen

Your eyes are not deceiving you: Dua Lipa really is dropping her next single soon, although it is titled “Illusion.”

The pop star shared the news in a post via X on Thursday (April 4), sharing a photo of the project’s artwork — which features her looking luminous in a white bikini top and shawl — as well as a teaser video. In the clip, she wears the same outfit as she dances along to a snippet of the pulsing, dance-floor-ready track.

“I could do this dance all night,” she sings in the sneak peek. “Ooh, what you doing? Don’t know who you think that you’re confusing.”

“ILLUSION 11TH APRIL ~ YOU READY?,” Dua captioned the post with three water-droplet emojis.

When it drops, “Illusion” will become the third single the British artist has dropped ahead of her upcoming third studio album Radical Optimism, following “Houdini” and “Training Season.” The former debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the latter entered the chart at No. 27.

Dua first announced Radical Optimism in March, simultaneously sharing its cover and tracklist. “Illusion” is the seventh title on the May 3-slated record, in between “French Exit” and “Falling Forever.”

One day prior to her latest news, Dua posted a reel of behind-the-scenes footage from her time working on the album, including bits and pieces of the upcoming music. “It’s the beauty of the chaos and trying to stay calm through it,” she said in a voice-over in the video. “Listening over and over and feeling like, ‘How do I want to tell this story?’”

“I always go for the most upbeat ones to introduce people to the record,” she added. “I can just keep on dancing and keep people dancing. “We’re trying to create a world in a different way, and sonically it was about experimenting. Thematically, it was always about resilience.”

Way-Too-Early Song of the Summer 2024 Contenders: The Front-Runners, Outside Shots & Big Question Marks

The dog days are not that far away, and we already have some summer-song competitors. Here are the singles and artists we think you need to watch.

On this day last year, the 2023 song of the summer had already hit No. 1.

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” which was released in late January 2023 and reached the top of the Hot 100 that March, turned into a juggernaut last summer, spending 16 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 last year and easily capturing the top spot of Billboard’s annual Songs of the Summer chart, which runs each year from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. Sometimes, the Song of the Summer race is an actual race, with multiple songs vying to define the summer season – and other times, we get a “Last Night” year, in which the competition is pretty much wrapped up by the time the Fourth of July fireworks are ringing out.

But however the Song of the Summer race plays out, we’ve seen a consistent theme emerge over the years: the singles that dominate beach season are often released when the weather is frigid. Past Songs of the Summer like Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road” and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” were all released months before the summer actually started – sometimes even before their dominant calendar year. So, even though it’s only early April, it’s worth perusing the current field of summer-song contenders, because the grand champ could very well have already been released.

Presenting our annual way-too-early Song of the Summer breakdown, featuring the current front-runners, the outside shots that could muscle their ways to the top, and the to-be-determined superstar releases right around the corner.
