Azealia Banks Calls Doechii The “Ugly Version” of Herself & Labels Her Fans “Wannabes,” The TDE Signee Claps Back

Azealia Banks is not done barking at people. Her latest target, TDE signee Doechii, is the latest subject of Banks’ ire, and she had something to say to Banks.

The “212” rapper had time Doechii, taking to her favorite soapbox, her Instagram Stories, calling Doeichii the “ugly version” of her, and her tirade didn’t end there.

“They find this kind of like ugly version of—well, she’s not even a version,” Banks said. “She’s ugly. And I hate to call a dark skin girl ugly because she just is ugly. She’d be ugly if she were light skin. They find this ugly girl and they try to sic her on Azealia Banks.”

Banks then hopped in Doechii’s comments, writing in a post chiming in on a post where Doechii asked her fans what the name of her fanbase should be.

“Definitely should call them the ‘wannabe’s,” Banks wrote. Doechii had enough of Banks trolling, clapping back, “The first time you came for me, I let it slide outta respect for my elders,” she wrote. “It’s not my fault you sellin bussy soap and I’m sellin platinum records. Leave me alone PLEASE.”

Doechii is referring to her song “What It Is,” which is her first platinum record.

Is Doechii A Wannabe Azealia Banks?

Banks has been on one following the release of Doechii’s latest single, “Alter Ego,” featuring JT. The song features both of the artists performing over a house beat.

Some fans of Banks were quick to compare Doechii to Banks because of the song, but the Harlem rapper was not trying to hear it.

“Doechii, girl, first off, I don’t really think anyone thinks your music is impressive,” Banks said. “So that means you need to go back and you need to discover who you are as an artist.”

In a follow-up post, Banks sings a melody before adding, “I don’t know why everybody associates that sound with me because I don’t have any songs—I don’t have a single song that has that synth on it.”

Azealia Banks Had Time For TDE

Banks even had time for Doechii’s TDE labelmates, calling out Isaiah Rashad for “sucking d*ck” and calling SZA “boring,” adding, “TDE is going out f*cking sad.”

She also accused Doechii of talking with a fake Azealia Banks account.

You got this like Doechii chick, who I have no f*cking clue who she is,” Banks said. “She’s been having this months-long dialogue with some fake Azealia Banks account and I guess thinks that I owe her some sort of collab. Honey, no.”

We won’t hold you, but this Azealia Banks mean-girl act is really tired.

DJ Mister Cee Has Passed Away At 57

WMX Presents: Iconic Records: Life After Death Launch Event

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty

According to multiple sources, DJ Mister Cee, born Calvin LeBrun, has passed away. He was 57.

“We have lost the iconic Mister Cee,” wrote Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg on X, formerly Twitter, confirming his longtime colleague’s untimely death. “I listened to him yesterday and am in complete shock. He was a dear friend to all of us, a wonderful man, and one of the most important and impactful DJs of all time. I love you Cee.”

The loss is a heavy one for Hip-Hop culture. Born in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, in the late 80’s Mister Cee came to fame as Big Daddy Kane’s DJ, who he met while in high school. As part of the Juice Crew, Cee was there on Kane’s seminal debut album Long Live The Kane, featuring on a song called “Mister Cee’s Master Plan” with his expert cutting and scratching throughout the album.

But perhaps even more notable is that Cee is credited with discovering late, great rapper the Notorious B.I.G. Cee was among the first to co-sign the then local rap phenom before appearing in The Source magazine’s Unsigned Hype section.

Later on in his career, Cee would shine on the radio at New York City Hip-Hop station Hot 97, where he was nicknamed The Finisher, and the party scene. Controversy in Mister Cee’s personal life would ensue after multiple arrests for soliciting trans prostitutes. Although he denied being gay, he did admit to an affinity for seeking oral sex from trans women.

There is no cause of death reported at this time.

Rest in power DJ Mister Cee.

This story is developing.

Hikaru Utada’s First Best-Of Album ‘SCIENCE FICTION’ Explained: How the Fluid Artist’s Works Transcend Boundaries

Pop hitmaker Hikaru Utada recently dropped the first best-of collection of their career entitled SCIENCE FICTION. One of Asia’s leading pop superstars since the late 1990s, Utada released a compilation encompassing their vast catalog entitled Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL. 1/VOL. 2 in the past, but this was a collection of singles and not a best-of album.

See latest videos, charts and news

The 41-year-old artist has always been able to grasp the fluid atmosphere existing between themselves and the times, and then deconstruct and reconfigure themselves accordingly. This means that their best-of project isn’t simply a collection of songs from the past, but is a set of works that vividly reflects who they are today. As such, songs that were first released long ago have been remixed and re-recorded, and a brand new song has also been included in the project. The album, mysteriously crowned SCIENCE FICTION, is a fresh and ambitious “new work” typical of the veteran pop artist.

It’s still hard to say that Hikaru Utada’s recent works — with origins in R&B and magically transformed over the years by their absorption of other genres including electronica — have been widely embraced outside of Asia. Fortunately, the “Pink Blood” star’s talents are gradually being discovered in the U.S. BAD MODE, their latest album featuring a meticulously detailed soundscape featuring collaborations with A.G. Cook and Floating Points, was ranked No. 31 on Pitchfork’s list of “The 50 Best Albums of 2022.” Also, “Somewhere Near Marseilles” came in at No. 10 on the online music publication’s “The 100 Best Songs of 2022” list. A new version, dubbed the “Sci-Fi Edit”, of this track is included in Utada’s latest album.

Trending on Billboard

The “First Love” singer-songwriter’s performance on the main stage at Coachella in 2022 probably helped boost their visibility in the American music scene as well. After their first-ever music festival set alongside a variety of 88rising acts, the Asian star’s music is slowly gaining traction in the U.S. market. In fact, among the songs on SCIENCE FICTION, “First Love,” “One Last Kiss,” and “Kimini Muchuu” (crazy about you) all charted on Billboard’s Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. tallies (on the latter, at No. 61, No. 14, and No. 21, respectively), and “Face My Fears,” a collaborative track with Skrillex and Poo Bear, charted on the all-genre Hot 100 list.

All these highlights happened after 2019. Utada’s music and current environment have changed dramatically since their first album First Love became the best-selling album of all time in Japan and rewrote the history of the country’s pop music back in the late ‘90s. Now based in London, the J-pop giant is resonating with various corners of pop and left-field music being produced globally. That’s why this best-of album, SCIENCE FICTION, is the perfect opportunity to encourage further discovery of this illustrious musician’s appeal.

Seeing as this best-of set is so current that it could be considered new, let’s draw a few auxiliary lines to help listeners understand it. The first thing that catches our attention is the title of the album, SCIENCE FICTION. Since this is also the name of Utada’s upcoming concert tour set for later this year, it may be premature to try to unravel the mystery based solely on the contents of the album. But it’s a convincing concept when considering their career up to this point.

After starting out as singer-songwriter whose music leaned toward R&B, the “Automatic” artist has gradually moved further towards electronic music since their third album DEEP RIVER (2002) and has infused their songs with the physicality brought to life through computer music and enhanced by live performances. In BAD MODE, Utada experimented with more electronic sounds in collaboration with A.G. Cook and Floating Points, where the level looping rhythms and the off kilter alien-like sound processing inserted here and there strike a strange balance, although they’re contradictory. Let’s use “universality” and “discomfort” to describe these conflicting elements. When asked in an earlier interview about these two elements present in their works, they replied, “Music is a very physical thing,” and then went on to say:

“(Music) can be waveforms, it can be thought of in terms of frequency, in terms of texture, in terms of volume. I’m the kind of person who wants to achieve a very spherical shape. I think if you’re careful about the distribution of all the elements, you naturally end up with the overall balance you’re aiming for. I think about the predictable and unpredictable areas, like, ‘If it’s there only once in the song, it’ll be like I intended it,’ and consider how often and how much I should blend in that sense of discomfort down to each element. I also think about the relationship between those elements in terms of their distribution.”

Utada’s words indicate that they pursue balance with an extremely objective perspective, and their approach of expanding their sound by introducing a sense of discomfort into something universal can be said to be somewhat science fiction-like. The way the mechanicalness and physicality are precariously assembled under a tense sense of equilibrium, combined with their distinctive musical prosody through bilingual lyrics, prick our emotions every time we listen to their works.

Since revealing the name of their new best-of set, Utada has hinted that their interest in quantum mechanics and simulation hypothesis inspired the title. In “A Flower of No Color,” their latest single and included in the upcoming project, they sing, “According to  renowned scholars / We are just illusions / But today / as always / I’m in love with you,” and, “But / if I can’t believe in myself / I can’t believe in anything / That’s synonymous with not existing / Only the facts that can’t be proven / Are called truths” These lyrics evoke themes such as the anthropic principle and philosophical realism — perhaps the “renowned scholar” is Nick Bostrom?

Another standout example from the album is their new song “Electricity,” released for the first time on this album. This track, with a rippling beat by Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points, again features some innovative prosody with a strange “E-E-E-E–le-e-e-e-ctri-i-city” sound, and Utada goes on to sing, “Fearing the unknown / addicted to conspiracy theories / To all such humanity / I want you to read a letter that Einstein wrote / to his daughter / Love is Light, Love is the quintessence,” referring to the much-discussed topic of fake news. In this age where fragments of meaning are endlessly propagated, the “Find Love” artist tells us that “the story engraved in our components / won’t end even if writing disappears from this planet,” offering a conclusion before disappearing into the distance with the sound of the saxophone.

While skillfully interweaving the dichotomies of pop/alternative, Japanese/English, universality/discomfort, and reality/fiction, Hikaru Utada the artist exists as the result of someone who has slipped through all such oppositions, fluidly moving between themselves and the times. Their presence shimmering just like science fiction, this lambent musician is now moving to the next phase of their career.

The pop superstar took to Instagram on Wednesday (April 10) to share a 10-second teaser clip of the music video to accompany her upcoming track, “Illusion.” In the preview, the 28-year-old singer is seen on what appears to be a naval ship, dancing along with swimmers, posing on surfboards and more.

When it drops, “Illusion” will become the third single the British artist has dropped ahead of her upcoming third studio album Radical Optimism, following “Houdini” and “Training Season.” The former debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the latter entered the chart at No. 27.

“[Releasing the album] feels good. It feels for lack of a better word — radically optimistic,” Lipa previously told Billboard of her upcoming project, before explaining the idea behind the album cover, which features the singer floating in a wide open ocean facing a shark fin. “Throughout the whole record, there’s this idea of chaos happening around and me trying to push through it in a way that feels authentic and honest to me.”

As to how she got the name of the album, Lipa attributed the phrase to a friend “A couple years ago, a friend introduced me to the term ‘radical optimism,’” she said in a statement announcing Radical Optimism back in March. “It’s a concept that resonated with me, and I became more curious as I started to play with it and weave it into my life.”

The 11-track Radical Optimism — Lipa’s first proper LP since 2020’s Future Nostalgia — arrives May 3.

As before, 2024’s fan fest will celebrate Black expression, artistry and culture through various activations featuring a diverse array of star artists, experts and tastemakers.

In a release announcing BETX’s return, BET Media Group president/CEO Scott Mills said, “We are proud to reintroduce BET Experience in the vibrant city of Los Angeles to celebrate the best of Black culture and entertainment. BETX 2024 is set to deliver an unprecedented week of entertainment, engagement, and empowerment all anchored in the brilliance and creativity of Black culture and our community.”

Added Louis Carr, president of media sales for BET Media Group, “BET Experience will be the ultimate destination for premier brands, such as our presenting partner Walmart, to authentically connect with fans and celebrate the richness of Black culture. Historically, BETX has been a core part of our brand success, offering bespoke opportunities for our partners to join our celebration of Black culture and directly engage with consumers and multiple segments of the Black community in meaningful, impactful ways.”

A key highlight of BETX 2024 will be its traditional multi-night concert series. Performances this year, to be announced at a later date, will take place at various L.A. venues including the YouTube Theatre, Miracle Theatre, Crypto.com Arena and the Hollywood Bowl, and then followed by the premiere of the BET Awards 2024 on June 30. Rounding out the activations once more will be comedy shows and immersive villages focused on fashion, health, beauty, sports, food and financial empowerment. Those will be supplemented by a marketplace featuring Black and women-owned businesses and panels on economic mobility in addition to pitch opportunities for entrepreneurs.

“It’s an honor to join forces with BET Experience as this year’s presenting partner, where we can continue to champion the unlimited potential of Black creators and entrepreneurs,” said Allison Rand. She leads brand experiential and talent partnerships at Walmart. “This event is a cultural catalyst, and we’re proud to support BET’s commitment to providing a platform for celebrating Black excellence and showcasing some of the most exceptional talents in the entertainment industry.”

Rihanna Reflects on A$AP Rocky Grabbing Her Butt at VMAs, Offers ‘R9’ Update & More | Billboard News

Rihanna is an open book! The “Lift Me Up” singer talked about her relationship with A$AP Rocky, her thoughts on having more kids, the long-awaited ‘R9’ and more!

Tetris Kelly:
Rihanna unfiltered. She’s talking the moment A$AP rubbed up on her that had everyone talking, if she’s up for more kids and of course, the forever looming R9.

Rihanna has a whopping 14 No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits, so when she speaks, we listen. While sitting down with Interview mag, the infamous moment came up where her man A$AP Rocky grabbed her butt while performing at the 2012 VMAs. “So when he grabbed my a– that night, everybody thought I was about to … my team was worried that I wanted to have his head on the f–king mantle, but I was like, ‘Ah, nah.’ That’s when everybody was like, ‘Oh my god, she likes him.’”

And she’s down for more babies, saying, “I would go for more than two. I would try for my girl. But of course, if it’s another boy, it’s another boy.”

And of course she talked about music, and she’s apparently the opposite of Beyoncé. “My brain is working backward right now. I usually have the music first, and the music leads me into all these visual opportunities. And now I’m having all these visuals.”

Will Benson Boone, Hozier or J. Cole Be Able to Overtake ‘Like That’ on the Hot 100 Next Week?

The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 dated April 20), things get tight at the top for Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar, with lingering threats from Benson Boone and Hozier and a new direct response from J. Cole.

Future, Metro Boomin & Kendrick Lamar, “Like That” (Boominati/Freebandz/Republic/Epic): After spending its first two weeks at No. 1, the excitement has finally started to settle down a bit over Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar’s fiery hip-hop missive. The song is still a top performer, however, remaining in the top two on both Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA chart and the Apple Music real-time listings. And the song saw revived interest over the weekend in the headlines, at least, as rap superstar J. Cole memorably responded to the song’s apparent callout as part of his own Might Delete Later mixtape, before expressing his regrets over doing so during the headlining set at his Dreamville Festival that Sunday.

“Like That” is also starting to be embraced by radio, as the song leaps 34-21 as the Greatest Gainer on this week’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart (up 77% in audience), according to Luminate, and is trending towards a debut on the all-format Radio Songs chart. The big question for “Like That” may be on how it is able to maintain its performance beyond next week, however, as the sequel to its We Don’t Trust You parent set – aptly titled We Still Don’t Trust You – is scheduled to drop this Friday from Future and Metro Boomin, with who knows what kind of additional surprises in store. Will “Like That” remain top of mind for streamers and radio programmers through that release, or will its heat be swiped by an even newer, more exciting single?

Trending on Billboard

Benson Boone, “Beautiful Things” (Night Street/Warner): Will it ever be Benson Boone’s turn at the top? “Beautiful Things” has been hanging around the Hot 100’s top tier for nearly a couple months now but has still yet to get past the runner-up spot – lingering at No. 3 this week behind “Like That” and Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter-revived “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Next week could provide another real chance for the singer-songwriter, though, as “Things” should see a boost from Boone’s full-length debut Fireworks & Rollerblades, which of course features the breakout hit within its 15-song tracklist.

In the meantime, “Beautiful Things” continues to grow at radio, as the song jumps 9-4 on Radio Songs, rising another 15% in all-format airplay audience this week. It’s currently the only song to rank in the top five of Radio Songs, Digital Song Sales and Streaming Songs, so with the expected consumption lift from Fireworks (and the start of his accompanying headlining tour), it may be now or never for Boone’s breakout smash to finally grab the Hot 100’s top spot.

Hozier, “Too Sweet” (Rubyworks/Columbia): Few would’ve gone into 2024 expecting to involve Hozier in any discussions about the top of the Hot 100 – before last year’s comeback, he hadn’t even appeared on the chart since his No. 2-peaking “Take Me to Church” in 2015. But with 2023’s well-received Unreal Unearth and subsequent tour and an ever-growing TikTok presence, the Irish singer-songwriter is once again proving to be a real factor on the chart: He debuted three songs last week from the new Unheard EP, led by the No. 5-entering “Too Sweet.”

“Sweet” climbs one spot to No. 4 this week, even outpacing any of the new debuts from Beyoncé’s blockbuster set Cowboy Carter. And there’s every indication that the song isn’t going to stop there: It’s climbed past “Like That” to the top of the Spotify Daily Top Songs USA chart, while also starting to find its footing on radio, trending towards debuts on the Adult Alternative Airplay, Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay charts. If its trajectory continues, it might not be more than a week or two away from matching Hozier’s previous “Church” peak of No. 2 – if not even one-upping that enduring smash.

J. Cole, “7 Minute Drill” (Interscope/ICLG): While “Like That” has multiple challengers for Hot 100 supremacy next week, only one of them can claim to be a direct answer to it: J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill” was written in response to Kendrick Lamar’s tough-talking verse on the No. 1 hit, with Cole taking aim at Lamar’s catalog spottiness and general lack of recent productivity. It didn’t quite detonate on impact the way “Like That” did, with many pundits taking issue with its more measured, perhaps less-committed tone, but it still shot up to near the top of the DSPs’ daily charts and remained the most-debated song on social media all weekend.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=5KRMLBh3-N4&version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-US&autohide=2&wmode=transparent

Complicating the chances for “7 Minute Drill” to achieve maximum chart impact is Cole himself walking the song back a couple days later, apologizing at his Dreamville headlining set for letting himself be dragged into the muck of the beef and announcing his intention to remove the song from streaming services. As of Wednesday morning (April 10) “Drill” was still available for listening on DSPs, but Cole’s repudiation of a song that many fans were already somewhat conflicted about may have cost it any chance of being a real threat to “Like That” on the chart next week anyway.

Joe Budden Claims Drake & Kendrick Lamar Both Have Diss Tracks Ready: ‘It’s Nuclear’

With J. Cole bowing out, it’s left Kendrick Lamar and Drake in the ring, and the pair of hip-hop titans could be clashing soon. Joe Budden claimed on the Wednesday (April 10) episode of his eponymous podcast that Drizzy and K. Dot emerged from the studio with “nuclear” records that they’re gearing up to fire at one another.

“Whatever little rappy s–t you thought was going on, it’s not that and something’s coming,” he began. “I think that J. Cole knows that from either Drake, Kendrick or both. And it was time to bow out because we are no longer in the first round.”

Trending on Billboard

Budden said that sources relayed to him it’s wartime, with Drake and Lamar allegedly ready to face off.

“I have it on good information that both sides went in the booth and came out. And what I’m hearing about both sides is that it’s nuclear. It’s up, up. I’m hearing this from people that can rap,” he said. “So I wanna come in here and say that speculation time is over. Debate time is over.

“I been saying for a few pods that I’ve seen absolutely nothing from Drake to get me excited enough to think that he will be capable of doing what needs to be done against the likes of a Kendrick Lamar,” he added. “I’m here to say there is no longer any need for me to instigate anything. We’re here and apparently he did it and people heard it. I heard it’s bad.”

Billboard has reached out to Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s reps for comment.

Lamar relit the fuse in March with his scathing response targeting Drake and J. Cole on Metro Boomin and Future’s “Like That,” which is currently spending a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100.

J. Cole had jabbed back at K. Dot’s discography with his “7 Minute Drill,” but apologized and threw up the white flag 48 hours later during his headlining set at Dreamville Fest Sunday (April 7).

Watch Joe Budden talk about the potential upcoming tracks from Drake and Kendrick Lamar below:
