Shania Twain Praises Taylor Swift for ‘Working Her Butt Off’: ‘She’s Living an Exhausting Existence’

Taylor Swift will always have Shania Twain in her corner. In a new interview, the “You’re Still the One” singer opened up about passing the countrypop torch to artists like the 14-time Grammy winner, whom Twain commended for “working her butt off.”

“She is living an exhausting existence, but she’s dedicated and committed to herself, to her art, and her work,” the Canadian singer-songwriter said in a Haute Living cover story, published Wednesday (April 17). “It isn’t even about ambition, though I’m sure that most people would call her ambitious.”

“She’s an extremely hard worker, and I’m sure she’s got giant goals,” Twain added. “But it’s not all about ambition: It’s about passion and committing yourself to your passion.”

Trending on Billboard

The “Man!…I Feel Like a Woman!” singer’s comments come in stark contrast to what another music icon recently said about Swift. Courtney Love took shots at the “Anti-Hero” artist while speaking to The Standard earlier this week, calling her “not important” and “not interesting as an artist.”

Twain, however, has long been a friend and fan of Swift’s, and vice versa. The pair performed together at the 2019 American Music Awards, and in a 2021 TikTok, the Eras Tour star commended the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” musician for disproving the notion that “country girls can’t go pop” over the course of her career.

On the subject of paving the way for genre-bending artists such as Swift, Twain said, “it wasn’t like I intended on being a trailblazer or anything.”

“I was just trying to be original, my authentic self, and to do it with conviction,” she continued. “I’m an expressive person, and I put that into my music. I was saying it with attitude and with confidence because I meant it. Yes, I see it as a great compliment when someone calls me a trailblazer, but it’s not like I set out to do so. I was just being myself, and I think that’s served me very well.”

Lil Tay Fires Shots at JoJo Siwa: ‘Madonna From Dollar Tree A– B—-‘

Lil Tay has ignited a feud with JoJo Siwa on X (formerly known as Twitter), in response to an alleged tweet liked by Siwa.

“.@itsjojosiwa You’re a scary ass bitch if you have something too (sic) say about me, say it & this time DON’T delete your comment or unlike shady tweets!” 16-year-old Lil Tay wrote. “Don’t let those paid YouTube views and botted Spotify streams get to your head Madonna from dollar tree a— b—-.”

Tay’s tweet is a reaction to an alleged tweet in Siwa’s “likes” history calling the “Sucker 4 Green” star “pathetic” and a “meme,” adding that the two aren’t comparable. Siwa has yet to respond.

Siwa is fresh off the release of her new single “Karma.” During an interview on SiriusXM’s Hits 1 Miami With Mack & Jen, Siwa clarified the comments she made in a viral video interview with Billboard, saying she simply wants to see more queer art get recognized. “So, here’s the thing — ‘gay pop’ is a thing that people have done, but it is not an official genre of music,” she explained. “It is a style, but it is how there’s rap, there’s rock, there’s R&B, there’s pop — if you look on the iTunes charts … this should be a literal genre of music.”

The 20-year-old originally spoke about the concept of “gay pop” during an interview with Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly about her new song “Karma,” when she claimed that she told her label (Columbia Records) that she “wanted to start a new genre … called ‘gay pop.’” Commenters quickly called out the singer for claiming to have created a “genre” that has existed for years.

In a later interview with TMZ, Siwa clarified that she didn’t intend to say that she “invented” the concept of “gay pop” music. “I am not the inventor of gay pop, for sure not. But I do want to be a piece of making it bigger than it already is,” she said. “I’m not the president [of gay pop], but I might be the CEO, or the CMO. I can be the CMO, the chief marketing officer, and use my marketing tactics whether people like it or not.”

Elsewhere in her interview on SiriusXM, Siwa responded to the ongoing backlash to her comments. “I could say I want world peace, and everyone would be like, ‘How dare you want peace for the world!’” she said. “People ask me all the time, they’re like, ‘Do you feel like you have to be very careful about what you say?’ And I’m like, ‘No, because no matter what I say, it’s going down anyways.’”

5 Taylor Swift Songs I Ranked Too Low Upon Release (Critic’s Take)

After multiple “songs ranked” instant reactions, it’s time to reflect on my biggest regrets, and champion the songs that were stronger than their initial rankings.

A few years ago, the Billboard staff began publishing “songs ranked” album reviews, as a fun way to provide an instant reaction to the week’s big new album releases. These reviews were inherently subjective — no one’s personal ranking of a 13-song album is going to be exactly the same as everyone else’s — and obviously preliminary, with only a few listens granted to projects that often took time to fully reveal their artistry. And of course, no one on the Billboard staff would argue against listeners wanting to experience an album in the order in which the artist intended to hear them, first and foremost. Yet these reviews are snapshots, designed to be based on our experts’ gut feelings about the songs you simply had to hear on a full-length, and destined to be debated endlessly online by fans who were furious about whichever song would be ranked last.

I’ve written extensively about every Taylor Swift album released to date, and began writing “songs ranked” reviews of her albums with Lover in 2019. And since then, I’ve had some rankings I wish I could take back — specifically, tracks that have grown on me considerably and made me go, “How did I place that one so low on my personal list?” Sometimes, those pangs arrive in a few days, and sometimes I get them after a few years. But on the eve of The Tortured Poets Department — and another “songs ranked” review, and later, more regrets over that ranking — I decided to look back at the ones that got away at the time, but have entered my wheelhouse in the time since.

Here are five Taylor Swift songs I ranked too low upon their releases, including her last four studio albums (Lover, 2020’s Folklore and Evermore, and 2022’s Midnights), as well as her “From the Vault” songs.

Justin Timberlake Shares Sneak Peek at Forget Tomorrow Tour Rehearsals: ‘Getting Ready for You’

Justin Timberlake isn’t being selfish with sneak peeks from his upcoming Forget Tomorrow World Tour. As the pop star gears up to hit the road again, he took a moment to share a carousel of photos from his recent rehearsals with followers via Instagram on Wednesday (April 17).

The photos find the “Mirrors” singer standing onstage as his band and crew assemble around him. One snap shows Timberlake looking at a gigantic image of himself blown up on the screen backdropping the stage, while another captures the former boy bander finding his place underneath two conjoining spotlights.

The pics reveal a number of other red-hued, psychedelic visuals Timberlake plans to use during his performances, as well as the working layout of his stage. As of now, it seems as though he’ll sing from a main stage complete with big screens and a bandstand for some parts of his shows, as well as a circular B-stage in the middle of the audience for others.

“Checking in from rehearsals,” he captioned the post. “Getting ready for you. #TFTWTOUR.”

Timberlake’s latest trek will kick off April 29 in Vancouver, after which the star will travel through a number of U.S. cities before heading overseas for a European leg this summer. In October, he’ll return for a second North American run, closing out Dec. 16 in Indianapolis.

The Forget Tomorrow World Tour will support the pop superstar’s latest album Everything I Thought It Was, which dropped March 15 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Led by singles “Selfish” and “Drown,” the 18-track set featured collaborations with Fireboy DML, Tobe Nwigwe and Timberlake’s former *NSYNC bandmates.

Red Lobster possibly going out of business? Say it ain’t so.

Folks on social media are panicking right now because they might have to find another spot to enjoy cheddar bay biscuits and endless crab legs for graduation day, Mother’s Day or after Easter service.

Spotted on TMZ via Bloomberg, iconic seafood restaurant chain Red Lobster is mulling bankruptcy as the company tries to figure out how to restructure its debt and other expenses, including restaurant leases and rising labor costs, as the celebrity gossip site reports.

Some even point to popular promotions like endless shrimp hurting the restaurant and the chain, which is bleeding cash due to the pandemic.

Per TMZ:

There’s also this tidbit that some are resurfacing amid this news — namely, the fact that Red Lobster’s recent endless shrimp reportedly hurt their bottom line quite badly … only for them to pivot to endless lobster after reporting a $12.5 million operating loss in ’23’s 4th quarter.

Even before the $12 mil hit … Red Lobster was bleeding cash, with reports saying they’d suffered a $19 million loss through the first 9 months of ’23… attributed to the pandemic, among other issues. Some minority owners in the biz have also started to jump ship.

For those who know about running a business and financial issues, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy does not mean the end for the restaurant that Beyoncé at once had popping cause she sang, “When he fuck me good, I take his ass to Red Lobster.”

Despite knowing that, the reactions to Red Lobster possibly filing for bankruptcy are flowing like butter you pour on your lobster tails, and they are hilarious.

One user hilariously wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “they still got them unlimited crab legs cause if so I’ll go tomorrow.”

“oh lawd somebody save the biscuits,” another person wrote in response to the news of Red Lobster considering chapter 11 bankruptcy.

“How did we let this happen???? Y’all too bougie for Red Lobstas?!?,” another post on X read.

We don’t think Red Lobster is going anywhere, but we are always here for funny reactions. You can see those in the gallery below.

Donald Lawrence & Co., Twinkie Clark & Yolanda Adams Top Gospel Airplay With ‘In Him There Is No Sorrow’

“In Him There Is No Sorrow” by Donald Lawrence & Co., featuring Twinkie Clark and Yolanda Adams, rises to No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart (dated April 20).

During the April 5-11 tracking week, the single advanced by 16% in plays, according to Luminate.

The song was originally recorded by Clark in 1981. The singer (known off stage as Elbernita Clark) is a member of gospel group The Clark Sisters, comprising siblings Dorinda Clark-Cole, Jacky Clark Chisholm, Karen Clark Sheard and Twinkie Clark. (The act was first a quintet; Denise Clark Bradford left in 1986.)

“In Him There Is No Sorrow” is from the album Donald Lawrence Presents Power: A Tribute to Twinkie Clark, released in September 2023. The set, which contains eight songs, is a reimagined version of Clark’s early 1981 solo album, Ye Shall Receive Power.

Lawrence banks his sixth Gospel Airplay chart-topper and first since “Deliver Me (This Is My Exodus),” with his choir, Tri-City Singers and Le’ Andria Johnson, ruled for five weeks in 2019. His first and longest-leading, No. 1, “The Blessing of Abraham” with the Tri-City Singers, reigned for 18 frames in 2006.

Clark earns her first Gospel Airplay No. 1 as a solo artist. She previously peaked as high as No. 14 in 2005 with “He Lifted Me.” The Clark Sisters have notched three leaders among four top 10s, most recently reigning in May 2021 with “His Love,” featuring Snoop Dogg.

Plus, Adams tops Gospel Airplay for a second time, after “Be Blessed” dominated for three frames starting in August 2005. Her latest No. 1, among six top 10s, marks her first entry since 2015, when she featured on Israel & New Breed’s “How Awesome Is Our God,” which reached No. 6.

Future & Metro Boomin Transform a Historic Theater Into a Hypnotic Club in ‘Drink N Dance’ Video

Future and Metro Boomin enjoy a wild night out in their “Drink N Dance” music video, which dropped on Wednesday (April 17).

Directed by Loris Russier, the video features the dynamic duo taking over the famous Los Angeles Theatre, with its marquee spelling out the song’s title. But there’s a much different show than one would expect playing inside, as the historic building is transformed into a club with girls dancing everywhere, some of whom are posted up on the pole and one of whom is perched on top of Future.

“Drink N Dance” comes from their latest collaborative album We Still Don’t Trust You, which was released on April 12 via Freebandz/Epic Records/Boominati Worldwide/Republic Records and includes features from The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Lil Baby, J. Cole and more.

Cole’s shocking appearance on the album arrived less than a week after he publicly apologized to Kendrick Lamar for dissing him on “7 Minute Drill,” which he removed from streaming services last Friday. (The track still debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, while its aptly titled parent project Might Delete Later debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.) “7 Minute Drill” served as a response to Dot’s diss toward him and Drake on the three-week Hot 100 No. 1 “Like That” from Future and Metro’s We Don’t Trust You, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 following its release on March 22.

Future and Metro will embark on the We Trust You Tour this summer. Tickets are already available for Cash App Card customers starting today, and the general on-sale begins Friday, April 19 on the Live Nation website at 10 a.m. local time.

Tennessee Bill That Would Create a Live Music Fund for Indie Venues Passes State Legislature

A bill to create a new statewide live music fund in Tennessee has passed in the state’s Senate and House. It will now head to the desk of Governor Bill Lee, who is expected to sign it into law.

SB2508/HB2712 — composed of identical companion bills carried by Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson and House Majority Whip Johnny Garrett — was introduced as a collaboration between the Music Venue Alliance Nashville, the National Independent Venue Association and the Broadway Entertainment Association. The bill creates the structure of a live music fund that will one day provide grants to live music and performance venues, promoters and performers.

The legislation also defines elements of the live music industry in code for the first time, marking a fundamental step toward directing future support. The fund is set up to be administered by the Tennessee Entertainment Commission under the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Trending on Billboard

Though the bill does not allocate any government money to the fund during this fiscal year, it does allow it to receive donations and grants from individuals and the private sector. The opportunity for government-appropriated funds remains on the table for future years. Stakeholders will also soon come together to evaluate revenue streams flowing into similar funds in other states and determine if any opportunities exist that might be a good fit for the Tennessee fund.

“We are truly excited by the unanimous and bipartisan support for our independent venues,” said Chris Cobb, board president of the Music Venue Alliance Nashville, in a statement. “It has become increasingly difficult to own, operate, or grow an independent venue in today’s climate, and a fund like this will be a difference maker to ensure that independent venues across Tennessee not only survive, but thrive.”

“The Live Music & Performance Venue Fund creates a massive opportunity for us to protect and preserve Tennessee’s live music industry for years to come,” said Bob Raines, executive director of the Tennessee Entertainment Commission, in a statement. “Independent venues and performers across the great state of Tennessee are the foundation of our complex and vibrant ecosystem and we know their success is directly tied to the vibrancy and growth of our communities across the state.”

While Tennessee is only the second state in the nation to define a live music and performance venue in the state code, similar funds have been created in cities and states across the United States. Texas provided over 650 micro-grants to individual creatives in 2023 through a similar fund and also provided a grant to the historic Austin, Tex., independent venue Hole in the Wall that enabled it to secure a 20-year lease extension.

“We applaud Leader Johnson and Representative Garrett for their leadership, and thank the entire Tennessee General Assembly for their unwavering support of independent venues, promoters, and the entirelive entertainment sector in Tennessee,” Stephen Parker, executive director of the National Independent Venue Association, said in a statement. “Whether investment to bolster the fund comes from the live community, the private sector, or government, we look forward to rallying support and growing this fund in the years ahead to ensure the preservation of Tennessee’s legendary live music economy.”

Burna Boy Lands a Spot on ‘TIME’ 2024 Most Influential People List: ‘He Is History in the Making’

Burna Boy has been named as one of TIME‘s 100 most influential people of 2024, which was announced on Wednesday (April 17).

Fellow Grammy-winning African artist Angélique Kidjo penned the essay highlighting Burna’s outstanding achievements, from becoming the first African artist to sell out a U.S. stadium — when the “Last Last” singer performed at New York City’s Citi Field last July — to becoming the first Afrobeats artist to sing at the Grammys, when he brought Brandy and 21 Savage on stage to perform “Sittin’ on Top of the World” (which was up for best melodic rap performance this year).

“Inspired by the fantastic drums of Nigerian folk music, and studied in the craft of the great African singer-songwriters, he follows in the footsteps of Fela Kuti — the internationally celebrated Afrobeats artist and activist,” Kidjo wrote. “He is history in the making. Now a whole generation of young people from the continent is looking up to him.”

Burna wrote the essay for his “Sittin’ on Top of the World” collaborator 21 Savage, who also made the TIME 100 list. “Like 21, I know what it’s like to rise above challenging beginnings, and it makes his success all that much more remarkable. … His approach to rap is refreshingly genuine; he speaks to us in a relatable way, effortlessly navigating the complexities of the genre,” he reflected in part. “I’m excited to witness the greater evolution of his artistry and the impact he continues to make on the world stage.”

Fellow musical artists Dua Lipa, Fantasia and Kylie Minogue are also on the list.
