Taylor Swift: Insider Her Record-Breaking Billboard Chart History | Billboard Explains

Will Taylor Swift earn another No. 1 album? In light of her highly anticipated release of ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ this Friday, April 19th, let’s take a look back at Taylor Swift’s many history-making achievements.

This is Billboard Explains: Taylor Swift’s Record-Breaking Chart History.

Narrator:
The day has finally arrived. Taylor Swift’s upcoming studio album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department,’ drops on April 19. And to celebrate, we’re looking back at some of Taylor’s incredible achievements on the Billboard charts. This is Billboard Explains: Taylor Swift’s Record-Breaking Chart History.

Taylor kicked off her charts journey back in July 2006 when her debut single ‘Tim McGraw’ arrived on the country charts. It also made the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 40 the next year. She kicked things into high gear with her sophomore album ‘Fearless,’ which includes hits like “Love Story” — that reached No. 4 on the Hot 100 — and “You Belong With Me,” which went to No. 2 in 2009.

Since then, Taylor has been a Hot 100 force to be reckoned with. She’s racked up 11 No. 1 hits, tying her with Whitney Houston for the fourth most among women in chart history. The superstar has charted 232 songs on the Hot 100, more than any other female artist and only second to Drake overall. Often, Taylor is competing against herself. She’s the only woman to replace herself at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and she’s done it three times. In 2014, “Blank Space” knocked “Shake It Off” from the top spot. And then in 2023, “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version)” took out “Cruel Summer” before the songs switched places the following week.

And we can’t forget the history-making album ‘Midnights.’

Telemundo Unveils New Structure for Entertainment Studios

Telemundo Enterprises announced on Thursday (April 18) a new structure for its entertainment studios to “boost its scripted content,” according to a press released issued by NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language division. The restructure, which will merge the media company’s linear and streaming studios (launched in 2021) into one unit, was unveiled by NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises chairman Luis Fernández.

“At a time when Telemundo is the most-watched network in prime time, we are super-charging our scripted content production under one strong brand: Telemundo Studios,” Fernández said in a statement. “For almost two decades, Telemundo has led in the production of Spanish-language content made by Hispanics for Hispanics. With this streamlined structure, we are doubling down on our commitment to serve the Latino community with the best scripted content across all platforms for years to come.”

The new structure sees Ronald Day elevated to president of entertainment and chief content officer, a role within which he will continue to report directly to Fernández. According to the press release, Day’s new role will “expand his responsibilities beyond the network’s entertainment programming and unscripted content, to include Telemundo Studios.” Previously president of entertainment and content strategy, Day joined Telemundo in 2018 as executive vp of entertainment for Telemundo Networks, leading the development and production of multiple Telemundo reality shows and live specials, including the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

The 20 Greatest Allman Brothers Band Songs: Critic’s Picks

Maybe more than any of their peers, The Allman Brothers Band were a group defined by eras, personalities and tragedies. Between the outfit’s 1969 self-titled debut and their last official studio album, 2003’s Hittin’ the Note, they released 12 studio albums and six officially released live albums, including the career-defining live set At Fillmore East in 1971, and countless bootlegged and band-sanctioned collections of their legendary shows, which even until the end, routinely lasted more than three hours.

But tragedies and personality clashes defined the band’s output over the years, beginning with founding member and lead guitarist Duane Allman’s sudden death in a motorcycle accident in 1971, and the subsequent death of original bassist Berry Oakley in an eerily similar situation a year later. Following Duane’s death, guitarist Dickey Betts took on a larger role in the band’s direction, producing a notable shift away from their bluesier beginnings and towards a more major-keyed, southern rock aesthetic that produced songs like “Ramblin’ Man,” the group’s only top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100, while Warren Haynes’ introduction in the 1980s added another strong songwriter to the mix.

Over the years, Gregg Allman, the gritty, soulful heart of the band that bore his name, remained its principal figure and its most influential songwriter, and with his death in 2017 at the age of 69, the band finally reached the end of its line. But the band’s spirit continued to live on in various forms, with Haynes’ Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks’ Tedeschi Trucks Band and the Allman Betts Band — led by Devon Allman and Duane Betts, son of Gregg and Dickey, respectively — carrying the legacy forward.

Now, with the death of Betts on April 18, 2024, at the age of 80, Billboard looks back at the 20 greatest Allman Brothers songs in roughly chronological order.
