Here’s Why Lily Allen Apologized to Elton John for Years of ‘Resentment’

Everyone has to put their foot in their mouth sometimes, even notoriously outspoken artists like English singer-songwriter Lily Allen. On Monday (May 6), the “Smile” singer formally apologized to Elton John for her years-long resentment of him — and she also revealed how it all stemmed from a grave misunderstanding on her part.

The newly-minted EGOT winner and Allen have a storied history together, with John having been her manager years ago. “He would call me like once every couple of weeks to check in and say hi and make sure I was okay,” she reminisced on the “Miss Me?” BBC podcast that she co-hosts with Miquita Oliver. “And there was some times in that period where I wasn’t okay.”

Allen was signed to John’s Rocket Music Entertainment Group when she was recording and promoting 2009’s It’s Not Me, It’s You, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, marking her highest-charting LP in the U.S. The two officially parted ways some years later following the release of Sheezus, Allen’s third studio album, in 2014.

“We parted ways, and I wrote this long letter to say how sad I was about the situation and that there was a big Elton-shaped hole in my life,” she said on the podcast. “Over the next few years as my life began to sort of spiral out of control, I held much resentment for the fact that I’d made myself very vulnerable in this letter and told him all about my sobriety, and I was quite cross with him for a few years.”

After Oliver probed for specifics regarding the source of Allen’s animosity toward John, she explained, “When I moved here to America, I was unpacking and I found the letter. I never sent it! Elton, if you’re listening — which you’re probably not — I love you and I no longer harbor that resentment towards you.”

While John has not publicly acknowledged Allen’s admission, the revelation does mark a relatively lighter news cycle for the controversial “5 O’Clock” singer. Earlier this year, Allen criticized the “quite calculated” campaign behind Beyoncé‘s critically lauded Cowboy Carter album, to which “212” rapper Azealia Banks replied, “You’re going to stop right there and sit this one out.”

Both Banks and Allen have been vocal critics of Queen Bey’s country pivot, which hasn’t deterred the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer from topping both the country and Americana/folk charts with her star-studded new album.

Creepy Nuts’ ‘Bling-Bang-Bang-Born’ Returns to No. 1 on Japan Hot 100 as Mrs. GREEN APPLE Rises to No. 2

Creepy Nuts’ “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” returns to No. 1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated May 8, extending its record to 14 weeks atop the tally.

The hip-hop hit dominated the chart for most of this year after it first hit No. 1 on the chart released Jan. 31 and stayed there for 13 straight weeks. The MASHLE Season 2 opener slipped to No. 2 last week (May 1) but returned to score its 14th week atop the list. The track has increased in all metrics of the chart’s methodology except streaming compared to the previous week. Downloads for the long-running hit are up by 117%, radio airplay and video views by 105%, and karaoke by 120%. And it’s far from doing poorly in streaming as well; weekly streams remain almost the same as the week before and the total has surpassed 300 million at the second fastest pace in Japan chart history.

Moving 4-2 this week is Mrs. GREEN APPLE’s “Lilac.” The song gained 130% in downloads, 127% in karaoke, and notably, 425% in radio from the week before, hitting its highest position yet.

Debuting at No. 3 is SixTONES’ 12th single “Neiro.” The theme song for the drama series Omukae Shibuya-kun starring member Taiga Kyomoto launched with 540,564 CDs sold, outselling the group’s previous single “CREAK” (471,285 first-week sales). The track tops sales and comes in at No. 9 for radio and No. 18 for video.

In other chart moves, the theme song of a project by TOBE’s artists, called “Be on Your side,” re-enters the chart at No. 12 after selling 75,157 copies in its first week, and the first single “MORNING SUN” by EXILE B HAPPY — the new EXILE TRIBE music group led by EXILE TETSUYA — bows at No. 15.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, video views and karaoke data.

GloRilla’s ‘Yeah Glo!’ Jumps to No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart

GloRilla’s anthem “Yeah Glo!” wins the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as the single crowns the list dated May 11. It climbs from No. 2 after a 14% surge in plays made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio stations in the April 26 – May 2 tracking week, according to Luminate.

“Yeah Glo!,” promoted by CMG/Interscope Records/ICLG, gives rapper GloRilla, whose real name is Gloria Woods, her third No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. She previously reigned with her first two appearances: “FNF,” with producer Hitkidd, topped the list for one week in August 2022, while “Tomorrow 2,” with Cardi B, ruled for 10 nonconsecutive weeks in December 2022 – February 2023.

The “Yeah Glo!” radio rise parallels the song’s strong streams due to viral buzz on social media. It’s been especially prominent on TikTok, where users have used the song in clips in two common ways. In one version, two people rock side to side – one delivering the hook’s main lyrics, while the other acts as a hype act and lip syncs the “yeah, Glo!” ad-lib between lines. The song has also inspired a dance challenge, which GloRilla herself has noticed and participated in during her latest concerts. One video of the rapper from a stop at Louisiana State University, by user @amyroselin, has drawn 10.6 million views on the platform.

In addition to its Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay triumph, “Yeah Glo!” drives 7-3 on the Rap Airplay chart through a 16% increase in weekly audience. It likewise cracks the top five on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, which ranks songs through combined audience totals from adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations. There, it pushes 6-5 and registers 12.6 million in audience, up 15% from the previous week. On Rhythmic Airplay, “Glo!” grows 22-21 thanks to an 18% boost in plays at the format in the tracking week. Combined, the mounting radio activity thrusts “Glo!” 37-27 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart, where it tallied 17.4 million in total audience, a 16% week-over-week gain.

Swelling radio activity, in turn, helps fuel “Yeah Glo!” on the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, which combines radio airplay results with streaming and sales data for its ranks. It climbs 13-11 on the list thanks to 17.4 million in airplay audience, 12.6 million official U.S. streams (up 7%) and 1,000 in sales (down 5%). The same statistics also spark its 59-38 swing on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

“Yeah Glo!” appears on GloRilla’s Ehhthang Ehhthang EP, released on April 5. The set debuted at No. 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and has remained in the top 10 for its first four weeks, sitting at No. 8 on the current edition.

As Expected TikTok Sues The US Government In Hopes of Blocking Potential Ban

TikTok Slaps US Government With Lawsuit Over Potential Ban

Following President Biden keeping his promise and signing the bill that could ban TikTok in the United States, the social media platform is suing in hopes of keeping that from happening.

Spotted on the AP, TikTok and its China-based parent company ByteDance sued the US Government, challenging the law and calling for the potential banning of the popular video-sharing app and most young adults’ source of “news” if it fails to find a US-approved buyer.

ByteDance has nine months to find a buyer and gets a three-month grace period if it finds a US-approved buyer.

The lawsuit claims the US Government’s law is an attack on free speech that has never been done before and unfairly singles out TikTok.

Per The AP:

In its lawsuit, ByteDance says the new law vaguely paints its ownership of TikTok as a national security threat in order to circumvent the First Amendment, despite no evidence that the company poses a threat. It also says the law is so “obviously unconstitutional” that its sponsors are instead portraying it as a way to regulate TikTok’s ownership.

“For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide,” ByteDance asserts in the lawsuit filed in a Washington appeals court.

President Biden signed the law as part of a larger foreign aid package. This law is the first time the US has imposed a potential ban on a single social media company.

Advocates of free speech argue that the law is similar to the behavior of oppressive regimes like China, which is ironic because the US is trying to keep US citizen’s private data out of the hands of the Chinese government.

More Details From TikTok’s Lawsuit

The lawsuit states that ByteDance has no intention of selling TikTok, which aligns with reports that the company prefers a ban over a sale. However, if it did, ByteDance would need Beijing’s blessing to make that happen.

Another sticking point is TikTok’s algorithm, which has been the “key to the success of TikTok in the United States,” which the Chinese government “made clear” in its lawsuit would be part of any sale.

According to both entities, the new law would force them to shut down in the US by Jan.19 because operating in the US would be technologically and legally impossible.

The lawsuit also claims that a US-only version of TikTok would be technologically impossible because there would be no “operational relationship” between the US TikTok app and the Chinese company.

While we don’t know what TikTok’s fate will be, one thing is for sure: This will be a long, drawn-out situation.

Drake’s OVO Store In London Vandalized Amidst Kendrick Lamar Battle

A day after it was reported that a man was shot outside of Drake’s residence in Toronto, more bad news comes for the embattled King of the North. Word out of London is that Drizzy’s OVO flagship store was vandalized with a specific message for the Canadian crooner.

Just a few days after Kendrick Lamar released his scathing Drake diss/club record, “Not Like Us,” a fan in the UK apparently took the song to heart and decided to spray paint “They not like us” across the front window of Drake’s OVO store, HotNewHipHop reports.

More than just your average diss record, K. Dot’s “Not Like Us” accuses Drake of not only being a sexual predator, but also employing a team of pedophiles who reside in his multimillion dollar mansion in Toronto. To make matters worse for Drake, Kendrick turned the diss record into an actual catchy club cut complete with a bouncy beat and sing-a-long phrase towards the end of the track.

As we stated before, the vandalization of the OVO store comes after a security guard was shot outside of Drake’s mansion early Tuesday morning. Though the security guard is alive, according to NBC News, he remains in serious condition.

Per NBC News:

Officers found the security guard suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Inspector Paul Krawczyk said at a news conference. The guard was standing outside a gate when he was injured.

Police said in a news release they believe he “was shot from a vehicle which then fled the scene.”

He remains in the hospital in serious condition, Krawczyk said.

Krawczyk said authorities do not know how many people were involved or what kind of car they were in, but he noted that the shooting was captured on video.

Yeah, Kendrick Lamar and Drake might have to hold a joint press conference at some point to calm things down if things like this keep happening because things seem to be getting out of hand and quickly. If 50 Cent and The Game were reluctantly able to do so in 2005 when their beef began to violently spill out on the streets, K. Dot and Drake can do so also. Just sayin’.

What do y’all think about the OVO store getting vandalized and one of Drake’s security guards getting shot? Let us know in the comments section below.

Questlove Blasts Kendrick Lamar and Drake Feud While Declaring ‘Hip-Hop Truly Is Dead’

While Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s heavyweight battle has been a spectacle sweeping pop culture for the last few weeks, Questlove isn’t thrilled with the messy feud and its “mudslinging” antics.

The Roots drummer scoffed at Drake and K. Dot’s war in a fiery Instagram post on Tuesday night (May 8) where Quest put fans on blast for their visceral reactions to the haymakers exchanged on the scathing diss tracks.

“Nobody won the war. This wasn’t about skill. This was a wrestling match level mudslinging and takedown by any means necessary — women & children (& actual facts) be damned,” he wrote before declaring hip-hop to be dead. “Same audience wanting blood will soon put up ‘rip’ posts like they weren’t part of the problem. Hip Hop truly is dead.”

Trending on Billboard

Questlove’s post made references to both Drake and Kendrick bringing family and children into the beef in a very personal way to attack one another. K. Dot accused Drizzy of hiding an 11-year-old daughter on “Meet the Grahams,” while the 6 God alleged that Lamar’s manager Dave Free was the father of one of the Compton rapper’s children on “Family Matters.”

“Here We Are Now…Entertain us,” Questlove captioned the post, quoting Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Quest turned off his Instagram comments, but that didn’t stop his hot take from sparking reactions on X as one user reminded Quest that he played the drums for Jay-Z’s Unplugged live album in 2001 that included “Takeover,” Hov’s diss track against Nas. “Wasn’t Questlove the drummer on ‘Unplugged’ live where Hov performed ‘Takeover?’” the user wrote. “A battle where women and children were also mentioned? Shut up, man.”

Including Kendrick’s explosive assist on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” in March, Lamar and Drake exchanged 10 diss tracks in total with the latest installment coming on Sunday (May 5) with the defensive “The Heart Part 6,” where Drake shut down pedophilia allegations repeatedly made by K. Dot.

Snoop Dogg and his liquor brand are the new sponsors of an NCAA college football bowl game, thanks to a groundbreaking deal.

The multi-platinum Hip-Hop legend Snoop Dogg is now putting his stamp on the college football landscape. The Arizona Bowl announced that it has entered into a multiyear sponsorship deal with the rapper and his premium spirits brand with producer Dr. Dre to sponsor the bowl game beginning this year. The game will now be called the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl Presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop, and the landmark deal will be the first time that an NCAA Bowl game will have an alcohol partner. Playfly Premier Partnerships, a division of Playfly Sports, will also be a partner in the deal. The bowl game is played between teams from the Mid-American Conference and the Mountain West Conference each year.

“College football fans are exhausted by the constant talk around NIL, conference realignment, coach movement, transfer portal, and super conferences,” Snoop Dogg said in a video on social media. “So it’s time we get back to the roots of college football, what it was focused on — the colleges, the players, the competition, the community, fan experience and the pageantry. Being a fan, coach, supporter of all levels of the game, I’ve sent many players through my SYFL [Snoop Youth Football League] to colleges and the NFL, so it’s only fitting that I step up and help get this thing right.”

The Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl Presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop will feature Snoop Dogg promoting a new line of Gin & Juice flavors before the game takes place in Tucson, Arizona, on Dec. 28. The days leading up to kickoff will also see special events being held in the city including charity functions and the SNOOPER Bowl, which will see the top youth football teams from Arizona and California compete for the title. It’s a natural move for Snoop, who founded and runs the Snoop Youth Football League, which has seen 40 kids go on to be professionals in the National Football League.

“We’re thrilled about our groundbreaking partnership with Snoop and Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop,” said Kym Adair, Executive Director of the Arizona Bowl in the press release. “This year, the Arizona Bowl is bringing sports, libations, and entertainment into a singular bowl game, and we are changing the definition of what a brand partnership is in the NCAA.”

At the end of last month, sneakerheads went crazy for Travis Scott’s first signature Jordan Brand sneaker, the “Jumpman Jack.” With the success of the silhouette (sold out immediately), Jordan Brand is ready to drop new colorways as heads seem to love what Travis and Jordan done cooked up in the lab.

According to Nice Kicks, a new black and mocha colorway of the “Jumpman Jack” is set to release later this year. Though sneakerheads were really hoping the black, sail and red version would be next, it seems like the mocha’s are next in line to get some play.

Per Nice Kicks:

Living up to its name, the upcoming Jordan Jumpman Jack features a predominantly dark mocha upper in suede with a black mesh base, black leather Swoosh, and a matching black midsole/outsole combination.

The Travis Scott x Jordan Jumpman Jack “Mocha” releases in 2024 for $200 via SNKRS and select retailers.

We lowkey would’ve rather have gotten the black, red and sail colorway. But it is what it is.

Are you going to be copping (or trying to at least) the new “Mocha” colorway of the Travis Scott “Jumpman Jack”? Check out pics of the other colorways, and let us know which one you prefer in the comments section below.
