‘Top Boy’ Wins Best Drama At 2024 BAFTA TV Awards

HipHopWired Featured Video

Top Boy

Top Boy, the popular British crime drama spanning five seasons [series], concluded in 2023 with plenty of fanfare. At the 2024 BAFTA TV Awards, Top Boy took home the Best Drama Series honors with one of its stars saying they would consider appearing in a spinoff if the creators move ahead.

As seen on Deadline, Top Boy edged out other critical darlings such as Slow Horses from Apple TV+, along with Happy Valley and The Gold, both appearing on the BBC. It was a good night for the crime drama written by Ronan Bennett as Jasmine Jobson won the Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for her role as Jaq Lawrence. Jobson has been nominated three times for the award before her win and the third time was the charm.

Ashley Waters, who stars as Dushane, and Kane Robinson, who played Sully, also shined in the series. Robinson was also nominated for the Leading Actor award. Jobson, who most recently starred in TV1’s Platform 7, told Deadline that she’s interested in reprising her role as Jaq.

“Netflix haven’t come to me. All I will say is: if Netflix are on it, I’m down [for it],” Jobson said. “I was struggling to let go of Jaq, so if they want to bring it back, let’s do it, but it’s out of my hands.”

Bennett said in an earlier interview that some discussions about the spinoff with Netflix occurred but nothing was confirmed regarding a new series.

Tencent Music Quarterly Profits Jump 28% on Growing Subscriber Base

Executives of Tencent Music Entertainment Group said on Monday that higher than expected subscriber growth pushed its first quarter profits up 28% to RMB1.53 billion ($212 million).

Through marketing promotions timed around the Chinese New Year holiday, TME was able to add nearly 7-million-net new subscribers in the quarter—the most it has ever added in a single quarter—helping drive a nearly 40% increase in music subscription revenues of RMB3.62 billion ($501 million).

“Our effective marketing campaigns led to higher-than-expected first-quarter music subscriber growth,” TME chief executive Ross Liang said in a statement. “We are pleased to see a steady user base recovery thanks to our optimized operations efforts.”

Tencent Music had 113.5 million paying subscribers as of March 31 — roughly half the number of subscribers its more global competitor Spotify has. Still total revenues fell 3.4% compared to last year to RMB6.77 billion ($937 million) due to another quarter of declining social entertainment services revenues.

Trending on Billboard

Social Entertainment services has seen declining revenue since TME scrapped a popular livestreaming service amid concerns it could be exploited for gambling. Revenues in the quarter from social entertainment services fell nearly 50% to RMB1.76 billion ($244 million) from RMB3.5 billion in the same period last year. Increased competition has also contributed to a consistent downward trend in monthly active users to its social entertainment products, with 97 million, or 28% fewer monthly active users, in the first quarter this year compared to last year.

The impact of declining social entertainment division revenues was blunted by a 43% increase in online music division revenue, which totaled RMB5.01 billion ($693 million) and was driven by music subscription and advertising services revenues.

Monthly average users to TME’s online music platform ticked down 2.4% to 578 million, but the money TME earns from paying users to its site rose. In the first quarter, TME earned 10.6 RMB ($1.47), up 15.2% from 9.2 RMB ($1.27) in the year-ago quarter, in monthly average revenue for each paying user of its online music service.

NBC announced the news on Monday morning (May 13), revealing that the 52-year-old rapper will be sliding into one of the signature spinning-chairs on the singing competition show alongside fellow newcomer crooner Michael Bublé. The panel for this fall’s season 26 will be rounded out by returning coaches Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani, with the former notching her third consecutive season on the series and No Doubt singer and solo star Stefani adding yet another notch with her eighth go-round.

Bublé isn’t a total stranger to the Voice stage, as the Canadian singer previously appeared as an advisor to Team Blake in season three. Snoop also has Voice bona fides thanks to his gig as as a Mega Mentor in season 20.

Taylor Swift Wears Kansas City Chiefs Colors at Paris Eras Show With Travis Kelce in the Audience

Taylor Swift had the perfect outfit for her final Eras Tour show in Paris, considering who was in the audience. The pop star appeared in Kansas City Chiefs colors for the 1989 set of her performance Sunday (May 12), and tight end Travis Kelce adorably jammed out to his superstar girlfriend’s show from the crowd at La Defense Arena.

The tribute to Chiefs Kingdom came midway through the Eras setlist, with Swift taking the stage in a sparkly gold crop top and red skirt to sing “Style,” “Blank Space” and more hits from her fifth studio album. On her left foot, she wore a yellow bootie, and on the right, an orange bootie.

It’s not the first time the “Anti-Hero” singer has sported the team’s official colors, with Swift wearing a number of red and gold outfits to games at Arrowhead Stadium throughout the 2023-24 season, all the way up to the Super Bowl in February, which saw Kelce and the Chiefs take home their second Lombardi Trophy in a row. This time, it was the New Heights podcaster’s turn to support Swift from the stands at La Defense, where he enjoyed the show alongside Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper and Lenny Kravitz.

Following the 1989 set, Swift performed a series of songs from The Tortured Poets Department for just the fourth time so far. Fan videos captured Kelce smiling and dancing along to “So High School,” which many think the singer wrote about the athlete. During the number, she and her dancers swag surf as part of the choreography, a sweet tribute to Chiefs Kingdom.

Later, Swift sang another Tortured Poets track believed to be about Kelce as a surprise song“The Alchemy” — which she mashed up with Red‘s “Treacherous.” While she strummed on the guitar, the Ohio native swayed and held up a cute hand heart at the 14-time Grammy winner.

Swift will next perform in Stockholm for three nights at Friends Arena starting May 17, after which she’ll spend the summer traveling through Spain, Scotland, Ireland and more cities in Europe before returning to the U.S. in October. In an Instagram post Sunday (May 12), the musician confirmed that she’ll be including the Tortured Poets set in the show throughout the rest of the Eras trek, writing, “I’m SO fired up to play this for every crowd on the tour.”

aespa Flash Fangs, Lift Cars, Show Off Superpowers in Futuristic ‘Supernova’ Video

K-pop girl group aespa prove they are stronger — and fiercer — than the rest in the stunning visual for their “Supernova” single. The first track from the four-woman act’s upcoming debut full-length studio album, Armageddon (due out May 27) is a high-energy bop on which members KARINA, WINTER, GISELLE and NINGNING sing about being “so hot hot hot” while ripping the side mirrors off parked cars, floating in the air, flashing their vampire fangs and lifting up vehicles with one hand.

The dance floor-ready track that fuses hip-hop beats, EDM rhythms and smooth pop vocals seamlessly mashes up English and Korean as the women travel through a series of perilous situations while also busting out some classic choreo on a green screen stage in a black void.

Armageddon is the follow-up to 2023’s Drama – The 4th Mini Album, which debuted at No. 33 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The group was most recently featured on the Rebel Moon – Songs of the Rebellion EP, which also contained original songs by Jessie Reyez, Tainy, Tokischa, TOKiMONSTA, Black Coffee and Kordhell inspired by Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon movie series. aespa will kick off a run of SYNK: Parallel Lines tour dates on June 29-30 with two nights in their native Seoul, South Korea.

The group’s label, SM Entertainment, revealed last month that WINTER, 23, underwent preventive surgery to treat a collapsed lung. In a statement, SM said that the procedure was intended to treat a pneumorthorax, a condition in which air accumulates in the chest, applying pressure on the lungs and possibly leading to collapse. “Winter is recovering from recent pneumothorax surgery. As the disease is prone to recurrence, the decision was made as a preemptive measure based on the opinions of the medical staff after sufficient discussion,” read a statement from the label.

The statement noted that WINTER’s recovery is a priority and that “future schedules will be made with Winter’s recovery status as the top priority.” At press time it was not known how, or if, the surgery will impact WINTER’s ability to join the group on promotional rounds.

This Buzzy, Country-Inspired Los Angeles Venue Is Headed to New York

With Sparkling gold cowboy boots that double as disco balls, a corner dedicated to Dolly Parton and vintage storefront signage that recalls the spirit of Westerns filmed in Pioneertown, Calif., it’s easy to see why someone at the country music-inspired Desert 5 Spot in Los Angeles would want to document all of its intricacies. Yet the owners of the multifaceted entertainment venue would prefer that guests abstain.

When Ten Five Hospitality managing partner Dan Daley and his team opened the rooftop bar in December 2021, they envisioned a location where guests could stay in the moment. “It was this pullback to an era when not everything was viewed through the medium of a screen,” Daley says. “We wanted the exact opposite of that manufactured feeling when you get into another space and feel like, ‘This feels fake because it’s almost too perfect.’ ”

Desert 5 Spot

In June, Desert 5 Spot will open a roughly 200-capacity second location, traveling cross-country to Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood. The venue will bring with it much of its style, such as the hand-selected furniture from antique sales and thrift shops across the West, various forms of its Boho desert-inspired chic and the affably named Dolly’s Corner. Like its predecessor, Desert 5 Spot N.Y. will prioritize the live-music experience with performances from rising artists, DJ sets and an in-house band — though plenty of established country and rock’n’roll talents are bound to show up. (In L.A., Kane Brown, Green Day, Dasha and Noah Cyrus have all performed, while others including Lainey Wilson and John Mayer have swung by the venue.) Plus, it’ll offer an array of weekly programming featuring line dancing and two-stepping classes, tarot card reading, a vintage trading post and more. Daley adds that there will be a regular Sunday-night party exclusive to the Williamsburg location, though keeps specifics under wraps. As for food and drinks: “L.A.-approved tacos,” he says with a grin. “We’re going to sling some of the best tacos in New York.”

Trending on Billboard

The venue’s East Coast debut follows a year in which the top song and album were both country releases (Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” and One Thing at a Time, respectively). The genre’s popularity has sustained in 2024, with pop stars like Beyoncé, Post Malone and Lana Del Rey either releasing blockbuster country projects or teasing forthcoming efforts. Daley expects the venue to embody the aura that has fueled the trend. “The ethos of country music is rawness, it’s authentic; it’s messy, but it’s real emotion,” he says. “I think that’s why the genre is speaking to all different types of people now. It’s part of this cultural reversal in terms of, ‘Let’s get back to real human connection,’ which at the end of the day is what country music is really about.”

Daley reveals the partners are eyeing other markets and considering further expansion, but the focus now is on New York. Still, it hasn’t precluded them from growing in other ways: At the Stagecoach festival in April, Desert 5 Spot hosted a pop-up featuring performances from Shaboozey and Nikki Lane over the weekend and attracting attendees including Leon Bridges, Diplo and Del Rey. But as the brand continues to grow, Daley stresses that its core message to guests remains the same. “Our goal is for you to [leave] our venue and say, ‘That was one of the best times in a really long time.’ ”

Sphere first invested in Holoplot in 2018 when the two companies partnered to develop Sphere Immersive Sound, powered by Holoplot, a loud speaker technology which uses 3D audio-beam forming and wave field synthesis to deliver crystal-clear, individualized sound to every seat in the Sphere when it opened in Las Vegas in September 2023 with U2.

Holoplot will remain based in Berlin and operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sphere Entertainment as it continues to grow its business and serve its customers and clients. The Sphere is currently hosting Dead and Company at its Las Vegas venue.

Gambino then heads across the pond for performances in Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, France, Germany, the U.K. and more.

The Atlanta creator’s Atavista serves as an 11-track updated collection of the unfinished 3.15.20 project he released as the world was gearing up to shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Atavista still boasts collaborations with Ariana Grande (“Time”), 21 Savage (“Psilocybae”), Summer Walker (“Sweet Thang”) and Young Nudy (“Little Foot Big Foot”) — albeit with different song titles. Gambino also released a Hiro Murai-directed black-and-white video for “Little Foot Big Foot” alongside the project, starring an appearance from Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson.

The 40-year-old isn’t done yet for the year either, as he’s preparing to unleash a second album this summer. The album is the accompanying soundtrack to his forthcoming movie, Bando Stone & The New World.

“My fans are great and have been so patient and are starving — this album is for you guys,” he said during a Gilga Radio stream in April.
